Lakenheath Old Boys
We are all former students at Lakenheath High School and other public schools in East Anglia. We were in school in the 70s and 80s and drank deeply from the well of British culture of those decades - the pints, the telly, and of course the footie!

Morning boys
After almost a thousand comments yesterday, we start another day of the Premier League
NBC did a great job yesterday. In fact, last night their
Match of the Day started off with the famous theme and then an introduction by Gary Lineker!
The show was two hours long and started at 11 so that has to be changed but.... well done NBC
I won't be around all day today. I have to bugger off to Cortland again around 10 o'clock
LINE-UPS- Crystal Palace v Tottenham (1330 BST)
Crystal Palace: Speroni, Ward, Gabbidon, Delaney, Moxey, Jedinak, Dikgacoi, Dobbie, Garvan, Wilbraham, Gayle. Subs: Marange, Alexander, Campana, Phillips, O'Keefe, Williams, Chamakh.
Spurs: Lloris, Walker, Dawson, Vertonghen, Rose, Sigurdsson, Paulinho, Dembele, Lennon, Soldado, Chadli. Subs: Kaboul, Capoue, Naughton, Townsend, Defoe, Friedel, Carroll.
Referee: Mark Clattenburg (Tyne & Wear)
Spurs have signed some decent players this summer despite the Bale Saga!
Bale is 'hurt'
Wonder if United could match Real's bid and bring in Gareth to Old Trafford? It would be great to keep him in the lead
What will Rooney do?
He came on set up two goals... but did not celebrate with his teammates. There are pictures of the entire side in a group except Roon. GROW UP
Picture Proof

Morning, UWS - I agree with you about the NBC coverage yesterday, and it's started in fine form this morning. They even have the American voice - Kyle Martino - that I was calling for yesterday on the panel. I'm sorry that I missed "Match of the Day" with Gazza intro. I won't make that mistake again.
Morning BD
I am not sure if it will happen every week but I thought it was great hearing the music and hearing Lineker talking about MotD being a TV staple since it's beginning in 1964
Good morning lads. I watched MOTD with Gary Lineker and thoroughly enjoyed it. Nice to turn on the telly and see Ian Holloway in fine form
Morning MUR
Palace up in the Prem thanks to a goal by Kevin Phillips Bong( Silly Party ) in the playoff Final.
In the tunnel again... luv it
Here we go - teams in the tunnel about to enter Selhurst Park. This coverage is going to spoil us for next summer's World Cup on ESPN.
Julian Speroni, the Palace keeper is the only player remaining from the Palace team when they were last in the Prem in the 2004-2005 season. He was their backup keeper that season to Gabor Kiraly.
Nice one - "Glad All Over" is the Palace anthem. They are loving it!
Agreed Bob. There will be some Darke commentary during the World Cup.
Morning, MUR - glad to have you back for another great day in the Prem.
Sounds like a 60s song . Sounds like something from one of the rock groups of that era.
Ian Who? I've forgotten him and his mop top friend already.
Thanks Bob. Glad to be on board.
We're off
First chance to see the new-look Spurs without Bale but with Paulinho and Soldado. Here we go!
LUFC Academy factor today of +2, with Aaron Lennon and Danny Rose on the pitch for Spurs.
Palace looking as naive and Jittery as I'd expected.
Kevin Phillips Bong on the subs bench as the Eagle had landed .
Agreed Bob, . It is a great atmosphere at Selhurst Park.
Looks like Palace is going to attack on the counter.
Gabor Kiraly was the keeper with those horrible sweat pants.
Saldado heads wide from a Rose of a cross.
Paulinho, Lennon and Walker are slicing through Palace on the left - earning another corner.
In fairness to them, attacking on the break is their best option today. Their season doesn't depend on these matches - they'll have to expect to lose and a draw would be an excellent result for Ian Holloway.
Gooner will not be pleased.
Agreed Bob. Their bread and butter will be the relegation six pointers.
Oh - Dobby the House Elf nearly got round the back of Spurs. Cleared out.
Palace finally attack , but Dobbie lacked the support to get off a decent pass.
I haven't heard from Gooner since yesterday's debacle. Fortunately he and Melanie were climbing Mount Hood rather than suffering through that shambles.
Nice hit by Dembele...just over
Oh - Dembele hits a shot just rising a bit too much. Clipped the bar.
Dembele over with a decent long range effort.
I heard lots of screaming from Oregon. The sightseeing sure is great way to relieve stress. He must have been really upset because he went to lots of different places.
The crowd is roaring whenever Palace get over the half-way line!
Palace won 3-0 the last time these teams met . Spurs sure have come a long way since then
Are you aware of any potential volcanic activity from Oregon?
IMHO this is just the warm-up for the Lukaku goal-fest to come later.
No - I think the lava flow was restricted by a visit to a Japanese Zen Garden. Very peaceful.
That is highly likely. A great chance of that happening.
I wonder if Gooner was chanting " You don't Know what You're Doing." Does he trust in Arsene? Your thoughts?
Another free kick chance for Spurs....
too low for Soldado.
I wonder why Trap hasn't given Owen Garvan a chance.
He wanted Arsene out last season. I've suggested that he be discreetly moved to an upstairs position given his years of service. It will unseemly for him to be sacked. However, here's the problem. They've got two very tricky matches to come starting this week with Fenerbache away, with Fulham away in between, followed by a home match with Spurs on September 4th. Could Arsene survive a Champions League exit and an embarrassing loss to Spurs at home? Don't think so.
Lennon wins a corner off of Moxey. Nice slide rule pass from Kyle Walker.
Aaron gets into brilliant positions but he just doesn't get enough final balls over. He took too many touches.
Dawson straight to Speroni off a Flat corner.
I was surprised that AVB sold Caulker to Swansea - I really rate him.
Sorry fellas... been running around a lot
I am off to shower and shave before my trip
I'll be back
Where's UWS off to?
Very insightful, Bob. The CL matches will be the key because he survived a slow Prem start two years ago, but that was due to some last second signings at the end of the August transfer window. Will he be able to emulate that. He's like my principal in that he likes to hoard money.
Decent header from Wilbraham from the free kick there.
Great free kick by Garvan as Wilbraham headed straight to Lloris.
Have a great trip, UWS.
Does Dean Moxey play with plenty of Moxey?
I anticipate the same kind of desperate last day of the transfer window activity for Arsene that happened in the aftermath of that drubbing at Old Trafford. That brought in Arteta, Mertesacker, and others.
Chadli has a shot come off of Dickagacoi for a corner. The South African heads away the corner from Sigurdsson.
Moxie has had plenty of it so far; Palace defending with gusto.
Screen frozen on Ian Holloway's mug as he yelling out instructions. Not a pretty sight.
I forgot to mention that drubbing at OT. He did survive that, a sign that he is a survivor. I remember that because it was the day after Melanie's Bat Mitzvah and a ridiculously hot day that day even by our standards to the point where I needed a nap.
Lennon again gets to the by-line but again hits Jerinak with the cross.
Is this Clive Allen on the color? Doesn't he hold the record of most number of London clubs played for?
BOOM BOOM, BOB.
Ian Holloway ( Unsensible Party) leaving Kevin Phillips Bong ( Silly Party), on the subs bench
He sure does. well done, Bob. Not sure if he's on the mic. I know it's some Cockney.
Great save from Speroni from Siggy's shot.
Superb tip over by Speroni from Sigurdsson.
Palace were wise to the short corner that was a complete shambles.
No comments on Kevin Phillips Bong? Rather naughty behavior from Bob.
Peter Drury called him "Clive" and said he'd scored a lot of goals for Spurs - I can't think of another.
Sorry, mate - still half asleep.
That's our man. No probs mate. I went to bed as soon as MOTD finished. Still slightly sleepy.
Your impressions of the new MOTD?
Kevin Phillip[s Bong is joining the Labour Party because he loves to strike.
BOOM BOOM!
Oh - Lennon chose the wrong option again - should have cut it back to the penalty spot. Chadli was in space.
I reckon Kevin Phillips Bong is largely redundant at his age.
I really enjoyed it. The intro music took me back to my childhood and it was great to see Gary Lineker hosting the show. Not the same as Jimmy Hill, but he does a good job. I liked the format. My only complaint is that it is on late, especially in the Eastern time zone.
Do you think KPB can contribute for thirty minutes off the bench?
Peter Drury seems to fancy AVB - "svelte and beautifully turned out."
Palace can barely get out of their own half. I don't see the point of Phillips in this match.
Ian Holloway may have managed over 800 professional matches, but hardly any have been in the Prem.
He's good player to bring on late if they need a goal, but not for the full 90. I think that's what Ian Holloway did in the playoffs. He's a natural finisher and why not have him on the bench if you need a late goal? He's probably a leader in the dressing room too.
Three minutes of stoppage time.
Far too casual from Chadli there with the backheel and Palace are away on the break again.
Will you be around for the Monday match or will you be back at work tomorrow?
Wilbraham had a nice turn and Ward did well to lead that break. Palace lack the quality in the final third.
Oh - Lennon finally found a decent ball but Chadli put his header over at the back stick.
Half-time - frustration for Spurs. 0-0.
Chadli heads over a cross from Lennon from close range and that is that as it is 0-0 at the half. Palace are riding their luck.
Hey boys,
I am back for a bit
One thing Match of the Day didn't have was interviews from the coaches. Wonder if that will change on MotD2 that is on tonight
We're back on at Selhurst Park. Gooner will be pleased so far that the new-look Spurs have been reduced to creating pretty patterns in midfield without any real clear-cut chances.
The second half is underway from Selhurst Park.
Surely MOTD don't want to miss out on the pearls of wisdom from The Special One.
welcome back, UWs. I forgot to mention that. They should have more interviews.,
There are only two matches today, so there should be plenty of interviews, including that of " The Happy One." How about those precious quotes from Sir Ian Holloway?
Penalty to Spurs
I Gooner is awake he will be satisfied.I wonder if he is awake as it is currently 6:30 on threw West coast
Penalty to Spurs! A bit harsh as Lennon drove the ball into Moxie's arm.
Definite hand ball by MOxey off the cross from Lennon. the right call by Clattenburg
New boy Soldado to step up to take it....
Calm as you like into the left corner. Wow!
0-1!
Cool penalty by Soldado... one nil Spurs
GOAL!!!
SOLADAO EASILY GIVES SPURS THE LEAD FROM THE SPOT , PERFECTLY PLACING IT AND SENDING SPERONI THE WRONG WAY
That's a fair point. With all of that traveling yesterday, Gooner and missus may be having a lie-in.
A lesson for Palace about the harsh reality of life in the Prem. If Gooner is awake then he will not be pleased.
I am taking the time zone into account too. This match kicked off at 5:30 AM local time . I could not imagine living on the West Coast, having to be up by 4:30 AM every Saturday and by 5 AM on Sunday mornings in order to watch the Prem matches live.
I've done that a few times during conferences.
I am off for a quick walk
I'll be back to say tata before I leave for C-STATE
SPurs having trouble defending as they are forced to head out a long ball for a corner that leads to another. The next corner is cleared. Garvan took both corners.
Etienne Capoue, a new signing making his debut, is on for Dembele.
Cheers UWS.
Will anyone be around for Spurs vs Toon tomorrow? I think Bob returns to work.
I've got a full day of it tomorrow with the Teaching & Learning Conference that I've organized. Picking up the keynote speaker tonight.
UWS seems to be on permanent chauffeur duty. Methinks that Tom needs a beater.
Have fun, Bob. You will definitely be missed. I go back to work on Tuesday
I second that. The girls have been trained , with a few exceptions.
The people in the Eastern time zone are spoiled, getting to have late lie ins without missing the Prem action. Your thoughts?
First Palace subs coming on...
Maroune Chamakh and Jonathan Williams to come on.
I agree - love it on the East Side.
I see Kevin Phillips Bong getting ready to come off the bench. He's the same age as Giggsy and a natural finisher. He is a natural finisher and surely should be able to last 25 minutes. Also, Jonathan Williams the former Arsenal trainee, warming up.
Dwight Gayle with a direct run and drive over the bar.
Dobbie the House Elf is off for some butterbeer.
Kevin Phillips Bong becomes the third player 40+ to play in an outfield role in the Prem. The others?
Sorry boys... very spotty by me today!
A triple change as Chamakh, Kevin Bong Phillips , and Jonathan Wiulliams are on.Garvan, Diokgacoi, and Wilbraham are off.
I know one was Teddy Sheringham, Norfolk. I need to think about the other.
No probs UWS.Lots of end of summer vacation tasks to complete?
Oh - Siggy should have wrapped it up for Spurs there. Wide of the mark.
NIce run and pass by Soldado and Siggy should have put Spurs two up.
The announcer gave away the answer and how could I forget? The other was Wee Gordon when he was player manager of Coventry City, great escape and all.
Palace aren't used to the pace.
They think they have more time on the ball
Oh - Super Kev was behind the back four but couldn't beat Lloris who stood up tall to him.
What was the question?
What is happening with the SPurs back four.
Will Giggs be the fourth?
Oh - Chadli tries a curler from distance. Ambitious!
Beside Kevin Phillips Bong , who are the two other outfield players aged 40 and over to have appeared in the Prem. the answer is Teddy Sheringham, Norfolk and Wee Gordon.
Sorry boys. I am off
I will be able to listen to the radio hopefully on the road
Talk to you tomorrow... COME ON YOU TOON!!
KPB showed that despite his age he knows how to get in good positions, creating havoc in the Spurs back four. Unusually poor first touch though.
Cheers UWS . See you tomorrow.
Kevin Phillips has not looked off the pace at all, looking fit as a fiddle. Also, I told you so. HEE HEE!
BLOODY HELL!Moxey thinks it's basketball, not footie.
Soldao wins a corner off of Moxey. Nice one two with Lennon.
Nice Palace counter off the corner. Superb long ball from KBP to Gayle, but Rose with world class speed, recovers to stop the counter and win a free kick
The Palace fans are continuing to make noise. Impressive.
Chadli harmlessly wide. Nice run and pass by Soldado yet again.
The answer to your question is that Giggs should be the fourth because he turns 40 in November and surely should still be playing at that time.
Decent effort from Chadli merely inches over.
That's the problem Spurs are going to have going forward. They've got two wide men from the LUFC Academy who can run for days but cannot deliver a decent ball in to save their lives.
Well wide by KPB . You give him one chance and it could be 1-1. That's why he's on the pitch.
Goalscorer Soldado is off after a satisfying opening outing. Ballhog Defoe on for him.
Dafoe on for Soldado. I agree with your statement, Bob.
Phillips has already had several chances that he hasn't taken. He's past it.
Chamakh wins a corner off of Rose.
LLoris misses the corner , but saves from Delaney and SPurs cleare
Dafoe on the break and tackled by the corner flag. Bob and Gooner will have enjoyed that sight.
Danny Rose off and Younis Kabboul on again.
Kaboul on for Rose.
Kevin Phillips Bong the only one of the 40 + outfield players not to have played for Man United. That would make him the first in Prem history. What sayeth Bob?
Dafoe drags a shot well wide. How is that any different from Phillips?
Phillips offside.
A lot of us will pick up points for Palace in the bottom three.
Ian not happy with the officiating. That is a real shocker!
It's not - Defoe is old news
Oh - Digacoi produces a great save out of Lloris!
Great double save by Llorois from Dikgacoi. Superb lay off from Phillips, who shows his natural ability
Jedinak has talked himself into the book as there are three minutes of stoppage time
AND you want Dafoe on the plane to Brazil? Rather silly.
Palace have given it a right go today, as they will throughout the season. It just won't be quite enough IMHO.
some clarification please. Your comments about Lennon and Rose imply that you stated that the fine art of crossing is not taught at the LUFC Academy.
No, no, no. I was just listing the options for Woy;
My strikers are Roon, Welly, Sturridge, and the Ox with Theo as the wide man. Defoe can watch on his telly.
I agree with your assessment of Palace.
This is a trickier win for Spurs than they might have considered at first.
it's over and Spurs escape from Selhurst Park with a 1-0 win.
Full-time: Well, it was harder work than Spurs might have expected but they've got their opening win.
Off for a shower before the late one.
IA m off to take Sparky for a short walkies before the next match. See you in a tick.
Off to SB and the return of the Happy One instead of The Happy one. High expectations for Chelsea this season.
Teams in the tunnel now:
Chelsea: Cech; Ivanovic, Cahill, Terry, Cole; Ramires, Lampard; Oscar, Hazard, De Bruyne; Torres. Subs: Schwarzer, Essien, Van Ginkel, Schurrle, Mata, Ba, Lukaku.
Hull City (no, we won't be calling them that): McGregor; Elmohamady, Davies, Chester, Figueroa; Brady, Koren, Meyler; Aluko, Graham, Sagbo. Subs: Harper, Rosenior, Bruce, Huddlestone, Livermore, McShane, Boyd.
Referee: Jon Moss.
Bugger! Jose has indicated his choices this afternoon with the rubbish Fernando Torres starting and my GBB Romulu Lukaku on the bench!
Sorry Bob. Perhaps he will do an OGS in the second half.
The match is underway at SB as it's the first match in the return of the Happy One.
Down to biz then - the second Jose era begins at SB.
Hull City drew 0-0 at SB, a result that lead to Big Phil being sacked. They had a narrow one goal loss the following season. Will it be easier for Chelsea this time?
De Bruyne launches one from distance. Always rising. Good pressure from the Blues early doors, though.
de Bruyne blasts well over off a pass from Oscar Not the grouch
I'm just astonished by how many chances Fernando Torres has had at this point at both Liverpool and now Chelsea. The guy hasn't had a decent season in years now.
Same old Torres. Useless pass ends a good possession.
I second that, but I think he's a favorite of Roman as he gifts the Tigers yet again.
Relentless pressure by Chelsea leads to a chance for Hazard. Too close to the keeper - blocked out.
Penalty to Chelski!
McGregor pushed over Torres from the long ball over the top. Terrible decision!
penalty AND ALLAN MCGREGOR WITH A STUPID FOUL ON TORRES WHO WAS HEADING NOWHERE
Lamps has a chance to get his account going this season...
And saved!
Dramatic stuff at the Bridge!
Can I just say that Lukaku would have scored that?
WOW! MCGREGOR REDEEMS HIMSLEF AS HE SAVES A PENALTY FROM LAMPS. HAZARD BLASTS WELL OVER. RELIEF FORT HE SCOTTISH INTERNATIONAL KEEPER.
WOW! MCGREGOR REDEEMS HIMSLEF AS HE SAVES A PENALTY FROM LAMPS. HAZARD BLASTS WELL OVER. RELIEF FORT HE SCOTTISH INTERNATIONAL KEEPER.
Lukaku roaring like a Tiger on the bench?
It's all hands to the pump from the off here for Hull City.
