On the Path to Paris!
Morning, chaps! Today begins the second set of fixtures in the qualifying rounds of Euro 2016. Holders Spain take on Slovakia, Sweden meet Russia but all eyes will be on England as they host mighty San Marino at Wemberley this afternoon at 2:45pm EST. I'll be marooned in the office this afternoon but I'll be using my new access to Fox Sports 2Go (courtesy of the Gooner) to avoid the usual dodgy links. Join me for all the action, won't you?
233 Comments:
One of the big talking points today is Wayne Rooney's England scoring record. The newly thatched one is on 41 goals, only three behind Jimmy Greaves on 44. With San Marino up today, Roon must have his eyes set on bagging a few. But he says it's not on his mind. Don't believe it!
The England starting XI:
Hart, Chambers, Cahill, Jagielka, Gibbs, Henderson, Wilshere, Milner, Sterling, Welbeck, Rooney.
Hi Bob
I am home early from school for the match
Lovely jubbly - the Fox Sports 2Go is up and running - thank you Gooner!
England v San Marino (19:45 BST)
It is 132 years since England's biggest international win.
Pablo Picasso had just been born, Charles Darwin was on his last legs and the Gunfight at the O.K. Corral had just happened in Arizona.
Ireland - then the world's fourth international side behind England, Scotland and Wales - were handed a 13-0 hiding on their bow on the big stage in Belfast way back in February 1882.
England also clocked the Irish for a baker's dozen in 1899, though the boys in green managed two of their own that day. Since World War II England have twice reached double figures - but not since hammering the USA in New York City on 27 May 1964.
Welcome, UWS - I'm marooned in the office but Gooner has hooked me up with his Fox Soccer 2Go account. I've got a lovely link up and running.
How did you get Fox2Go
Any predictions on the scoreline tonight? How about Roon - hat-trick on the cards?
Here come the teams!!
Glad to hear about you having an account to use
Yeah - it's a lot crisper than the picture on the dodgy links, I'll tell you that.
San Marino anthem now - didn't know they had one.
How about this for tonight.... just like Russia!
The Russian U19 side who thumped non-league Cheadle Town 22-0 last weekend.
The Russians were 9-0 up at the break against the Cheshire side and despite making wholesale changes, added 13 more in the second half.
Russia U19s scored in the fourth, 13th, 18th, 25th, 30th, 33rd, 38th, 42nd, 44th, 46th, 47th, 50th, 54th, 57th, 62nd, 67th, 68th, 69th, 73rd, 76th, 80th and 83rd minutes.
Same again please
I think Spain is on ESPN
The San Marino side: Simoncini, Palazzi, Vitaoli, Dellmarco, Brolli, Battistini, Hirsch, Tosi, Chiaruzzi, Vitaioli, Selva.
Never even 'eard of 'em!
Crikey!
#s 2 and 3 in the England's group Lithuania and Estonia take each other. Slovenia and Switzerland face off as well
I wish England weren't in all white... they should have blue shorts
Wemberley looking lovely tonight. It's that dirty old man David Pleat on the color commentary tonight, so get ready for some lusty descriptions of Danny Welbeck's thighs.
Do you like UEFA spreading all the matches over four days?
England play on Sunday too?
And we're away!
Come on, England - open up those floodgates early doors!
They play in Estonia at Noon on Sunday
Only game in that group
Roon drifted offside as Henderson played him through.
I'll look forward to that one - a bit more of a test.
Remember when England fell behind one nil in 1993 after 8 seconds
Psycho fluffed a back pass without SM touching the ball until they put in the back of the net
We won 7-1
Adventurous from the San Marino boys - cut that out!
What was called there
Back pass!
I remember that well - it's the only time that they've scored, right?
What is Pleat talking about... Of course Roon was going to shoot
Welbeck has a shot deflected
Oh - Roon slapped the free kick straight at the keeper!
And then Welly's effort is deflected out by Henderson.
They've scored before
Against us?
OVERALL RECORD
P115 W1 D3 L111 GF16 GA465
Against England
P 4 W 0 D 0 L 4 GF1 GA26
You were with me at Wemberlee when England beat Luxembourg 9-0, right?
Yeah - that's what I thought. The one that Psycho coughed up in 93 was the only one they'd scored against us.
Wasted free kick there - come on!
Oh - Sterling is offside but the keeper did really well at his feet!
They think it's Moldova... it is now
They're already losing
Sterling offside... stay on side you numpty AND finish it!!!
Nearly a quarter of an hour gone now and no goals - not happy.
Offside not by Roon even tho the ball went out... CONCENTRATE
Checking out some odds
San Marion has odds of 5 to 1 to get a corner!
Decent pop by Roon there. Keeper doing well so far.
Slovakia take the against SPAIN
Piss poor from England so far!
Attack them with pace and width
A question from Facebook - when was the last time England scored 10 against anyone? Any idea?
I agree with you, mate. At least we're not Spain!
I think I mentioned that earlier
May 1964 beating the US
Why even give him a chance to go down Welbeck
Sorry, mate - I didn't catch it.
Finally
Jags with the header... not exactly the same finish as he scored in front of the Kop
Bloody hell - an irritating colleague came by and interrupted me when the goal went in. At least we've got one.
What a plonker he is
Indeed.
Nice lay off by Welly... Hendo's shot blocked
Oh - Welly teed up Henderson but his effort was blocked by a blue wall.
Should have slotted that home!!
No more goals in our group
No more goals in our group
That's the third goal for Jags in an England shirt.
Bit of time wasting now from the SM wanker.
Oh dear - the Wave has broken out at Wemblerley. Should be banned!
Palazzi upends Sterling and England will have another chance to whip a free kick in.
It's LUFC Academy over this one.
Oh - decent ball in but no one got on the end of it.
Come on, Roon!!!!
Why can't England score a cricket score... it is only 1-0 with only 10 to go ini half
Nice stuff from Welly but Jack couldn't get it out from under his feet.
I agree - I'm really disappointed.
Oh dear - LUFC Academy picks up a yellow for a bad foul.
Sterling tries to find Welly in the box - the ball wasn't quite right.
Why isn't Rooney in the box???
Valiant defending by the SM backline.
Bloody useless by Chambers.
GET IT OVER CHAMB
Oh - great save by the keeper - but the contact from Welly wasn't quite right.
Penalty to England!!!!
England look clueless
Nice save off a Welbeck shot
Pen to England
High kick on Roon
It was a boot in the face by Selva on Roon that brought that one on.
Roon will take for his 42nd....
Roon.... scores
2 nil but still not good enough!
Slots home nicely - only two behind Greavsie now.
England full flow now with Chambers overlapping and winning a corner.
Rubbish corner from Milner and then he's lost offside when the ball goes back to him.
And that's half time then. 2-0. Not good enough, really.
HT
Not really good enough
Jinx
Spain are still losing at half!
Two changes for England - Adam Lallana has come on for Raheem Sterling and The Ox has come on.
I'm surprised that Woy has taken Sterling off - he seemed more effective than Wilshere.
Fox goes right back for the kick off
ENgland make changes
Only allowed three
The Ox and Llanna on
PLAY WITH PACE!!!
Good afternoon lads. I am joining you for the second half.
The Ox and Lallana in for Sterling and Hendo
Afternoon MUR
#3
Welbeck with another England goal
Three goals in just one and half qualifiers
GOAL! An immediate result of those changes then. The Ox charges down a clearance and feeds Welly to score the third.
3-0!
You're a good luck charm, MUR - welcome!
Lallana has a cross headed out for a corner as England are three up
Roon heads straight to the keeper off the corner.
Ta, Bob. I hope England can score half a dozen or so in the second half.
wellie wins a corner after the first attempted cross was blocked. A pathetic corner from Milner.,
Get it over Welly.
You Wally
I agree with UWS. There is no reason why England shouldn't be able to play with pace against the equivalent of a pub side. They should be ashamed of themselves for not walloping these minnows.
Hello UWS. Bob is looking down on us in the PPP standings.
Not quite sure why the SM defender is holding his face there. Lalana didn't come close to his face.
Useless by Milner. He's better than that
As long as Chelski continue to dominate, there is always a chance that the Shield will be returning to The Cottage.
Is he holding his face because he's embarrassed?
He should be - that was a shocker!
Useless pass by Welly.
A bunch of short passes then just wide by the Ox.
Training pitch stuff from England before The Ox tries one. Wide of the mark.
Pleats points out the Southampton connection on this England team, with The Chambers, The Ox and Lallana all on the pitch and Clyne and Lambert on the bench. If Theo were fit, he'd be another.
Oh - The Ox with a header on goal, turned around by the keeper.
Milner has a shot blocked off a short corner . Another corner is won . The keeper saved a miss-hit header from Ox. Lallana headed wide from the next corner.
Still the same score in Slovakia on ESPN
For once, Pleat made a good point. The Saints Academy is really awesome. A model for other teams to follow.
Roon wins a corner.Taken short aND mILNER HAS A SHOT BLOCKED.
Gibbs does well to back track and stop a rare San Minnow attack.
BLOODY HELL ROON! LEARN TO CHIP . THAT SHOULD HAVE BEEN FOUR.
Bloody hell Roon... shoot!!!
England score anyway
Lalanna
Oh - Roon misses two chances in a minute.
GOAL! The Ox (or maybe Lallana) with the fourth.
Nope... offside
No - it's ruled offside. Still 3-0. Roon is a plonker.
COME ON ROON. THE KEEPER SAVES AT HIS FEET THEN
GOAL!!!! THE BALL BREAKS TO OX AND COMES OFF LALLANA.
BUGGER!!! IT'S DISALLOWED FOR OFFSIDE.
It wasn't offside
Should have been allowed on the replay. Shame.
The goal should have been allowed. A horrible decision from the lineman as the players in an offside position were "inactive."
Jack tries to weave into the box but it's a great tackle that stops him. The SM lads have fought valiantly to keep the score down.
Bloody Andros Townsend coming on now.
Andros Townsend on for Wellie. A SPud for a Gunner.
WHy is Townsend on.... why's he in the squad... does he play for Spurs
Bloody hell, Roon!
England are so blah
He doesn't - they've got loads better players.
Agreed - they're really boring me.
Stop the stupid chips over the top!!!
WOW! Slovakia still one up vs Spain
Roon heads well over off the corner.
WOY talking to the fourth official, presumably about the disallowed goal.
Chambers passes to Roon, whose near post effort is pushed away for a corner. Roon has a shot blocked off the corner.
A quick turn and shot by Roon... about time something was done fast
Young Jack has a header easily saved off a cross from Townsend.
It's Desmond in Macendonia against Luxembourg
Spain STILL losing
GET THE BALL OUT WIDE AND CROSS THE BALL!!!!
The only thing Roon does fast is to start fights.
GOAL !!! TOWNSEND PUTS ENGLAND FOUR UP. A POWERFUL EFFORT.
Goal
Townsend scores a decent... still not good enough
GOAL! Townsend proves a point with a belter!
4-0!
A nice run and pass by the Ox and Townsend beat the keeper, who had been playing well, at the near post.
Chambers concedes a bad free kick. I don't know what people see in this kid. I've seen him exposed on a number of occasions, like there.
Chambers commits a foul just outside the England box. Palazzi replaced by Buscarini. One sub left for the minnows.
Shot on goal... still no corner for that 5 to 1 bet!
Fortunately the free kick went straight to Hart. At least it kept him alert.
Selva lobs one into Joe Hart's hands and England are away again.
The keeper fumbled a shot from Lallana.
LOL! Spain still losing to Slovakia.
The match in Slovakia is almost exactly the same as this score and still one nil the hosts against Spain on the Deuce
More training pitch stuff but Roon fluffs the chance once again.
Nice one touch passes by England , but Roon fluffs his lines yet again.
GOAL! Roon finally comes good!
5-0!
GOAL !!! ABOUT BLOODY TIME AS ROOM MAKES IT 5-0. DECENT CHIP
Roon with a chip... Pleat thinks it an OG but it is now 5
Definitely OG
IT WAS A DEFLECTION AND PERHAPS WILL BE CREDITED AS AN OG TO THE BEARDED ONE.
Nice turn and chip but it wasn't going in until the defender deflected it. It was a cross rather than shot - won't be credited to him.
And now he slices one off into touch.
Lithuania one up at home to Estonia
Slovenia and Switzerland still scoreless
Given the easy nature of this group, Roon will have plenty of opportunities to break Bobby Charlton's record but will any England fan really view him in that same light?
a POOR PASS IS deflected for a corner taken short. Townsend crosses and Roon heads straight to the keeper.
He's not fit to wipe Sir Bobby's bum.
LUFC wins another corner. Let's another one, lads!
Another corner. Milner takes and Roon heads straight to the keeper.
Roon meets the cross there but the keeper did well again. Pleat fancies a date with him.
Is Roon there to provide catching practice for the San Minnow keeper?
San Marino is an exotic location . Pleat would have a lovely time there.
A shocker as Slovenia take the lead vs the Swiss. England is in a really pathetic group.
A useless pass that Pleat calls a clever ball. That must be his dirty mind at work.
Bugger... Spain have tied it up
Still time for another couple - come on!
Useless cross from Ox to the keeper as he received a pass from Lallana. The Saints Academy at work again.
Gibbs has a shot blocked.
Lallana wins another corner with a nice take down.
Short corner played to Gibbs - blocked out.
Roon shoots well over.
What on earth was that from Roon!
Ukraine take the lead in Belarus.
Roon tries the volley that they thought he'd score against Everton.... they thought he score
Rinaldi on for Selva. The last San Minnow substitution./
A rare goal kick for Hart amidst sarcastic cheers,
STRUTH... SPAIN ARE LOSING AGAIN!!
Townsend with a shot cleared off the line.
Oh - cleared off the line from Milner!
Shoot it Milner
LOL! I hate the Spanish.
If Slovenia defeat the Swiss then England have all but qualified for Euro 2016.
That would be a huge upset if Slovakia hold on.
Joe Hart gets applause for a rare touch of the ball.
Tried to turn it over to Spain match but the link is down
60th consecutive defeat for SM.
England will finish the night with two wins in the group, six points and a +7 GD. Not bad but it should be better.
Slovenia have take the lead over England's 'main' rivals Switzerland
Rinaldi, the recent sub, booked for a foul on Young Jack.
Two minutes of stoppage time.
ESPN have it back
Wonder if they missed the goal
4 added minutes
Should England fans start booking their tickets for France ?
