Classic Sunday Footie
It's a really big Sunday in the Prem as it starts with the second place Saints vs third place Citeh and a chance to edge into Chelsea's lead as they were held 0-0 by Fred's Black Cats. This is followed by another imprtant match as the Spuds host the Toffees from SFL. Yes , they are both in mid table positions, but the winner moves up to seventh place , behind the Gunners on goal difference and one point behind the fifth place Hammers. How can you miss the coverage on NBC?
236 Comments:
The teams are out of the tunnel and ready for kickoff. The usual superb coverage by NBC. A Saints win will leave them four points behind Chelsea. A Citeh win or draw leaves Chelsea with a six point lead.
Rangers are one up vs Killie in the Scottish Cup, early doors.
The're off from St. Mary's!
Red Devil's team are two up at St. Pauli at the half.
Nasri wins a Citeh corner as Mike Jones overruled his linesman. The corner from Nasri is headed away
High and wide by Clichy.
Rangers one up vs Killie at the half.
Yaya goes on an accelerating run and is fouled from behind by Wanayama, who is booked.
A training ground routine goes horribly wrong , but Citeh win the ball back.
Two of England's top keepers are in Action. Fraser Forster went 439 minutes without conceding a goal before the howler on Monday
A horrible decision by Mike Jones as he books Aguero for diving . The replay shows that Citeh should have had a penalty as he was tripped by Fonte in the box. A horrible decision.
An obvious trip by Fonte on Aguerro in the box. Citeh were robbed as they should have had a penalty
Citeh have completely dominated so far Zaba wins another corner for Citeh
The corner from Nasri is headed on by Mangala then the Wanayama clears
Yaya curls a long range effort straight to Forster off a really long possession.
St. Pauli pull one back vs Kaiserslautern, but trail 1-2. Red Devil will not be pleased.
The first sustained attack of the match by the Saints and they nearly score. Hart saves a close range volley from Pele then superbly saves the rebound from Davis then Citeh block another effort as the offside flag is raised . Better from Citeh
Tadic curls a free kick thaT IS CAUGHT BY hART UNDER PRESSURE.
Mangala received a requisite booking for conceding that free kick.
Citeh denied a breakaway due to a curious offside decision. Mike Jones stopped play to talk to the linesman. Nobody knows who was offside. Pelligrini is none too pleased and that is unlike him.
Ferandinho fouls Mane about 35 yards from goal. Hart punches the free kick from Tadic then a foul is called.
The next three matches will prove if the Saints are the real deal. The two Mancs at St. Mary's today and a week from tomorrow while they face the Gunners at the EM on Wednesday.
Forster was spared embarrassment as Aguero had a soft shot go through Forster's legs, but it was cleared off the line then out for a corner. The corner was headed on then headed wide by Aguero.
Bertrand wins a corner off of Navas.
Fonte heads wide at the near post off the corner.
Davis has a cross come off of Mangala for a corner.
The corner from Steven Davis is straight to Hart
Alverel clears a pass from Aguero out for a corner. He cl;eared off the line earlier.
The corner from Nasri is cleared
Mangala gets in front of Hart to clear a deflected cross from Bertrand for a corner. Hart punches away the corner and Steven Davis wins another corner.
Hart punches away another corner from Davis.
Morning, MUR - sorry to be tardy for the match. I could have sworn I had set my alarm but I overslept nonetheless. Fortunately, I see that I haven't missed any goals.
Two minutes of stoppage time.
I'm enjoying reading your comments about the match, MUR. Seems a fairly even affair.
Good morning Mate. No goals , but Citeh were robbed. Aguero was booked for diving when Citeh should have had a spot kick.
Ta, mate. Citeh dominated the first fifteen minutes , but it's been even since. They should have had a penalty and had a shot cleared off the line.
It's 0-0 at the half, but Citeh will feel aggrieved as Aguero was booked for diving, but the replay showed that Fonte fouled Aguero in the box. Aguero also had a shot squeeze through Forster's legs, but it was cl;eared off the line.
Red Devil will be pleased that Kaiserslautern have gone 1-=3 up at St. Pauli
Looks like Mike Jones cocked up a penalty call - Aguero was robbed.
Red Devil will be cElebrating as his team have won 1-3 at St. Pauli. I think that moves them up to a playoff spot.
He sure was . Citeh should be leading. Pelligrini was livid.
Rangers are three up vs SPL Killie in the Scottish Cup.
The teams are heading out of the tunnel and Woy is in attendance. He has plenty of players to scout.
Chelski and Funky Joe Mourinho will be the happiest about this scoreline as the teams come back out at 0-0. Neither have made any progress.
A key moment in the match as Yoshida is on for Schneiderlin, who must be injured. Will Citeh take advantage. The second half is underway
So far United are the only top four team not to be involved in a 0-0 match
A long range effort from Alverel is not that far off.
Now Pelle is not far off.
The Saints are quick out of the traps with a couple of long shots at Joe Hart.
Rangers have defeated Killie 3-0 in the Scottish Cup and surely, have shown that they can survive in the SPL.
GOAL! Yaya with a stonking drive that deflects in.
GOAL !!! YAYA SCORES WITH A DEFLECTED EFFORT. FERNANDINHO PLAYED AGUERO DOWN THE LEFT, HE LAID IT OFF FOR YAYA AND HE SCORED WITH A SHOT THAT HAD A COUPLE OF DEFLECTIONS. CITEH TAKE THE LEAD.
Poor defending from the Saints as they chased after the ball and left Yaya unattended at the top of the box.
0-1 Citeh!
Citeh deserve the lead, IMHO, after being denied a stonewall penalty and having a shot cleared off the line. Citeh now in second, six points behind Chelsea.
Did you see my posts on FB about Fred? He had words for Jose .
Navas wins a corner off of Yoshida as Milner is on for Jovetic.
Mangala heads wide off the corner when he should have headed on.
That was only the second goal conceded by the Saints at St. Mary's all season.
Mane has an effort find Row Z.
Citeh leapfrog Southampton into second place now on 27 points, six behind Chelski.
Losing Schneiderlin has really affected Southampton in this second half.
Schneiderlin was substituted due to a thigh strain and Citeh took advantage.
That draw hasn't really hurt Chelsea. Their lead only decreased by a point.
Navas heads out for a Saints corner that is headed away
Mangala heads out for another Saints corner.
The corner from Tadic is headed away as is his return cross.
I'm enjoying all of the players' full Movember looks. I notice that Joe Hart has a toothbrush style mustache, for example.
Zaba called for a foul on Mane,
Tis the last day of Movember.
Decent free kick opportunity now for the Saints.
Awful short routine off the training pitch.
The free kick from Davis is headed away by the first man.
Milner curls an effort over off a pass from Aguero.
Lampard on for Nasri. Gooner will be pleased.
Decent effort from Milner.
Kate was grossed out by his spitting and I told him that he was an LUFC Academy kid. She said that they should have taught him not to spit in public.
You should read what the Gooner posted about my post. He complemented Fred and criticized the NBC crew. A great read.
To be honest, I think Kate will discover that the art of spitting is highly encouraged at the academies.
Shane Long on for Mane as the Saints go with two up front.
Milner wins a corner off of Fonte.
Kompany heads on the corner from Milner then Aguero heads well wide.
Tadic and Mike Jones not seeing eye to eye.
Aguero wins a corner off of Clyne.
Mangala heads on the corner from Milner and the Saints clear straight back to Citeh
Good stuff - but I think it's a bit harsh on Rebecca Lowe, who's quite tasty IMHO.
Navas shoots wide off a poor pass from wanyama.
True, but As the Gooner rightly stated, Fred is the cat's meow and spot on about Jose.
Mnagala sent off for a second yellow as Yaya coughed up the ball and he fouled Long just outside the box. Spot on by Mike Jones.
Mangala shoves over a on-rushing Saints striker and he's off!
Citeh down to ten men!
Di Michelis on for Navas as ten man Citeh aim to sit on their lead.
Into the wall by Tadic.
Can Citeh hold on?
No arguments about that second yellow - he had to go.
Fernandinho gets free in the box but can't angle his shot enough - into the side netting.
Citeh counter and Aguero found Fernandinho , who shoots into the side netting. It was always going to be difficult to score from that angle.
Agreed. Mike Jones has had a good second half. Other than the penalty decision and a baffling offside call, he's been spot on.
Fred and Sparky are napping on different pieces of furniture.
Will this be the match that signifies Southampton falling away.
GOAL! Lamps seals the deal!
GOAL !!! LAMPARD SEALS IT FOR TEN MAN CITEH WITH A TRADEMARK FINISH AS THEY GO TWO UP.
The kind of finish that Lampard has been specializing in all his career - right in the corner. His third in eight matches for Citeh - a terrific strike rate.
If Lamps keeps that up, he'll score loads in the MLS next season.
kOMPANY BOOKED FOR A FOUL ON tADIC AS mAYUKA IS ON FOR sTEVEN dAVIS.
The free kick from Tadic is just too high
Back to the goal. Milner picked Alverel's pocket, ran down the left and found Lampard who shot in the corner from the edge of the box.
Oh - Forster does so well when Aguero streaked through and tried to round him. Well done, Frazier - he saved me another Aguero goal.
Citeh nearly went three up on the counter. Aguero was clean through, but Forster saved at his feet.
I agree with you about Lampard. He can break all sorts of MLS records. Before I forget, congratulations on the Revs making the MLS Final.
Oh - great break by the Saints there but Peller couldn't finish off Long's cross.
End to end stuff as the Saints break and a cross from Long is just inches in front of Pelle. Then Mayuka shoots straight at Hart.
Cheers, mate - I can't say that I watched it. I just can't keep up with the MLS. But I will watch the Final.
Wanayama has a shot deflect harmlessly to Hart
I think they play Seattle or the Galaxy. I'll be cheering for your Revs.
GOAL! Clichy finishes off a great Citeh win.
A poor corner by Tadic is chested down by Lampard. Hew finds Di Michelis on the counter . He finds Aguero and
GOAL !!! CLICHY SCORES WITH A GREAT FINISH AT THE FAR POST OFF HE PASS FROM AGUERO.
Yeah - that one is on later tonight.
Kompany down getting treated as Clichy scored his first Prem goal in five years , which was scored for Arsenal vs Stoke.
Kompany goes off injured and Citeh will play the last few minutes with nine men.
Five minutes of stoppage time.
Impressive by Citeh as they scored twice when down a man. Also , they have scored three out of the four goals that the Saints have conceded at St. Mary's this season.
I wonder if Gooner feels that the Gunners can defeat the Saints on Wednesday.
Long is offside as Hart blocks his close range effort. Citeh could not clear.
It's over and Citeh impressively win 0-3 at St. Mary's
So Citeh put a marker down and tell Southampton what's what. I reckon that the Saints will start their inevitable drop down the table now.
They might . Gooner will be hoping for that on Wednesday as will UWS and Yours Truly a week from tomorrow.
They're off from SFL.
It may not be as big a match as the first one, but the winner is one point out of a European spot ahead of the midweek matches.
I'm just back for kick-off after a refreshing Sunday morning shower.
Celtic are one up at Hearts about a half hour into a Scottish Cup tie.
Welcome back mate. I'm back just in time from taking Sparky for walkies.
Celtic one up at the half.
The team news for this morning:
Spurs: Lloris, Chiriches, Fazio, Vertonghen, Davies; Lennon, Bentaleb, Mason, Eriksen; Kane, Soldado.
Subs: Vorm, Dier, Kaboul, Chadli, Dembele, Lamela, Paulinho.
Everton: Howard, Coleman, Jagielka, Distin, Baines; Barry, Besic; Barkley, Eto’o, Mirallas; Lukaku.
Subs: Robles, Hibbert, McGeady, Atsu, Osman, Pienaar, Garbutt.
A win would put the Toffees in a great position. They host the toothless Tigers on Wednesday and if the Hammers slip up at the Hawthorns the Toffees could find themselves in a European spot.
Bentaleb is back in the starting lineup for the Spuds. That could make a difference.
High and wide by Kevin Mirallis off a pass from Baines. They are dominating possession early doors.
OH!!! A superb run by Barkleyy and his pass broke to the Chunk whose shot lacked the power to trouble Lloris.
Great run from Barkley but The Chunk couldn't profit from it.
Chirices is in for Dier and Ben Davies is in for Danny Rose.
The Spuds have been like Shite at Shite Fart Lane as they already have four home defeats in the league.
Did anyone pick Pochettino to win the sack race? I doubt it.
Spurs on their 10th manager in 11 seasons - the commentators are wondering what that means for Pochettino's job security. Should he have stayed on the South Coast?
I guess if he had it all to do again he might have, but is currently in the running to surprisingly win the sack race.
GOAL! A corker from Mirallas opens the scoring at Shite Fart for the Toffees!
The Toffees have a free kick. Mirallis to take. Actually Baines. it's headed out and
GOAL!!! MIRALLIS SCORES WITH A ROCKET IN THE UPPER 90.
Groans from the crowd as another errant pass goes wild.
The replay showed that when the free kick was headed out that Aaron Lennon did not learn the art of defending at the LUFC Academy as he was turned by Mirallis before scoring with that wonder strike. I just wanted to point out that minor detail.
Fazio clears a pass from Baines for a corner.
Taken short by Baines and the Toffees keep possession. Offside is called.
A poor back pass from Chirices and fortunately , Lloris was out to clear before the Chunk could take advantage.
The Toffees looking for their first win at SFL in six years.
GOAL! The ever reliable Ericksson chips home the equalizer.
Where would Spurs be without the directness of Harry Kane and the guile of Ericksson.
GOAL !!! 1-1 AS THE SPUDS SCORE AGAINST THE RUN OF PLAY. HARRY KANE RECEIVED A PASS , TURNED DISTIN. TIMMY FAILED TO PUSH HIS SHOT AWAY AND ERIKSEN PUT AWAY THE REBOUND.
They would probably be fighting a relegation battle.
So everyone's back where they started this morning - Everton in 9th and Spurs in 10th.
Someone will not be pleased.
Both teams are three points outside a European place. A draw doesn't really help either team.
Celtic are now three up at Hearts in the Scottish Cup.
Nice idea from Kane to chip Timmy but the execution wasn't quite right. I do like this kid.
A decent lob by Harry Kane is not too far over after a cross by Ryan Mason was headed out by Distin.
I like Mason too. They should keep him in the starting lineup too.
Oh - Kane was a bit too direct and greedy there. Should have probably dished off to a teammate.
A superb solo run by Michael , but unfortunately it was a tame effort straight to Timmy.
I agree - there are a few sparks for Spurs, but overall they're a team of overpaid prima donnas.
Another question is why do the Spuds have four right backs. That is definitely a surplus when there are holes in other positions.
Eriksen tries one and it's deflected - could have gone anywhere!
Eriksen has a shot deflected just wide for a corner.
Celtic now four up Hearts . Someone will be pleased about that.
Clive Allen mentions a lull in the match. Are the teams feeling the effect of their EL matches on Turkey Day?
Lloris saves easily from Coleman, who lacked some mustard on that shot.
Besic got away with a poor back header as it just eluded Soldado and barely made it back to Timmy.
Coleman prefers a Dijon, apparently.
BOOM BOOM! Especially if he farts shite !
Three goals in 29 games for Soldado - not nearly good enough.
Soldao cost a=eight and two thirds million quid a goal. A real steal. definitely a bargain!
Barry booked for a pull back.
Mirallas picks up a yellow card despite the loud protests from Roberto Martinez.
A minute of stoppage time.
Bloody hell - Soldado has scored!!!
Spurs 2-1 up!
GOAL !!!! A COLLECTOR'S ITEM AS SOLDADAO PUTS THE SPUDS 2-1 UP ON THE STROKE OF HALFTIME. kANE PICKED bAINES'S POCKET , FOUND LENNON, WHO WENT ON A SPEEDY RUN AND HE PLAYED THROUGH SOLDADO , WHO BEAT TIMMY WITH A SURPRISINGLY GOOD FINISH.
The Spuds are 2-1 up at the half.
Will miracles cease to exist?
Great time to score as well, as Spurs now go in 2-1 up and the Shite Fart faithful can sing the Spaniard's praises. Wow!
I followed your lead and am back from a much needed refreshing shower. I feel much better
Mixed feelings for Someone as Celtic won 0-4 at Hearts in the Scottish Cup as his beloved Toffees are behind due to a rare Soldado goal and a rare mistake by Baines.
Four minutes into the second half and Someone is already texting Desmond.
Spurs sitting back at the beginning of the second half, much to the consternation of the home support.
Soldado heads wide off a deflected cross from Ben Davies.
Timmy does well to hold an effort from Harry Kane.
Ciraces is booked for holding back Mirallis on the break
Nice to have you back squeaky clean for the second half, mate.
Ryan Mason has a miss hit cross come off of Distin for a corner.
Cheers mate. I feel much better as I didn't sleep well last night. Great to have you back too.
Gareth Barry fouls Kane just outside the box after great persistence when he appeared to lose the ball to Distin and Baines.
Into the wall by Eriksen, but the Spuds keep possession.
Just over by Mason off pass by Eriksen
Leon Osman is on for Ero'o and Aidem McGeady is on for Mirallis. Lamella on for Lennon.
Chiraces is off and the Spuds have plenty of right backs as he is replaced by fellow right back, Eric Dier.
Oh - Coleman had a chance to usher in Reverend Tutu.
Nice through ball from Ross Barkley and Coleman shoots wide with just Lloris to beat.
Trivia man Aiden McGeady seems to be making a difference for Everton.
It turned out to be a corner cleared by Eriksen for another. The next corner from McGeady is cleared by Soldado. as the Rev. Tutu is put on hold, to the dismay of Someone.
McGeady falls into the category of a super sub for both club and country.
