Super Sunday in the Premiership!

Morning, chaps - I'm settling in at the Cottage to watch an intriguing Sunday double-header. It all starts in a  few minutes with Arsenal's trip to Bournemouth. That's followed by the big one for this weekend - United v. Chelski. Join me for the usual LOB Sunday morning banter, won't you?

On paper, Bournemouth v Arsenal perhaps might even be the most tasty weekend fixture of them all. There’ll be football played this afternoon alright – these two will pass, pass, pass and attack with speed, and it’s impossible to see this one not being hugely entertaining. The subplots are many: Arsenal haven’t scored in three, their old boy Benik Afobe has scored in his last three; fail to win here and Arsenal could remain as many as eight points adrift of the leaders, win here and Bournemouth would rise to the relatively giddy heights of 13th.

Good morning, Bob. I'm looking forward to this one too as well as enjoying the pleasure of your company.

Morning, MUR - great to have you on board for this one this morning. Looking forward to seeing your United drop Chelski into even more hot water in the table.

Thanks mate. I wish I could say that they would , but Chelsea is undefeated under Hiddinck and playing some decent stuff. I think a draw is the best I can hope for

8:29 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Did you hear about Fred's new lucky number.

8:29 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

They're off from the vitality Stadium

8:30 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

The Gunner's first ever visit to this stadium. I wonder if the Gooner will note that.

8:31 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Arsenal get us going with their usual gold and blue away kit. Maybe it's just me but, for once, I'm having a difficult time picking out the two teams. Both teams are wearing dark shorts.

8:31 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Adam Smith and I thought he had won a corner off of Kos after a great run down the right.

8:32 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

No - what was Fred's lucky number?

8:33 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

I'm doing okay mate. Think about the mustard, mate. Will the Gunners cut the mustard like the color of their jerseys

8:33 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

It is 77 because his team came from two down after the 77th minute walkout.

8:34 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Steve Cook just about saves the day as a ball from Ozil got threaded through to Sanchez down the middle.

8:35 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

That was quite a shocking turnaround. I have to think that there was a psychological factor in that walkout for the players. Liverpool dropped two important points there. A bit of a shakeup at the bottom as well with Villa and Newcastle winning and Norwich dropping back into the mire.

8:36 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

It was a superb tackle by Cook. Well done and probably not a rare occurance.

8:36 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

I think that all three relegation places may go down to the final day. Even Villa , who have cut their distance from safety in half in a month. The changing of the Garde is having a positive effect.

8:38 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Bournemouth have a set piece chance now.

8:39 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Flamini picks up a requisite booking for a rash challenge on Simon Francis. Cherries players wanted red, but it wasn't as severe as Wanayama's . Flamini's was not as hard and he made an attempt to go for the ball. A red would have been severe

8:40 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

True - I'd say that any of the clubs with fewer than 30 points right now are in trouble. And that, of course, includes Chelski!

8:40 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Unfortunately, nothing came of it. The Gooner may not concur with me.

8:40 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Chelsea are undefeated in nine league matches and are on a great run. I really don't see them going down

8:41 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

A nibble by the Nacho on Afobe o, formerly of the Gooner's Academy.

8:42 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Well - your United are on a real goal-scoring tear right now. I'm hoping that you can put a stop to that run.

8:43 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

A poor free kick from Ritchie was unusally overcooked. He usually puts in a good delivery

8:43 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Unusual by Alexis as he blasts over with just Boruc to beat

8:44 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

That was a good chance for a player of Alexis' quality. In on goal but ballooned the volley over the bar when he should have worked the keeper.

8:44 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

What did the Gooner make of the result at the Etihad? If the Gunners do not win ten it may be a two horse race between the Spuds and the Foxes.

8:45 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Not quite the free-flowing festival we’d hoped for yet. Conditions definitely seem difficult and possession is being ceded liberally at the moment.

Arter is down in need of some treatment. Game finally stopped.

8:47 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Kevin Friend makes an enemy of the locals as Harry Arter has been down for ages, holding his ankle. I think it's pretty clear that he's not faking this one.

8:48 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

This is the first time I've seen the sun in Blighty in ages. I think this has been their wettest winter ever.

8:48 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

I'm sure that he would have preferred a hard fought draw. This has got to be the best chance for Arsenal to win the title in years.

The Ox tries a shot from somewhere in the English Channel. It's of course blocked.

8:49 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

A moment's applause by the locals, but what for???

8:50 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Some odd clapping going on in the Vitality now, as if the fans are marking some kind of moment. Commentators don't mention it.

8:50 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Nice one,mate. Great geography lesson.

8:51 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Will you be up for the early kickoff next Sunday. A noon kickoff between the Gunners and Foxes. That's bloody early for Yours Truly and during a three day weekend.

8:52 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

GOAL !!!! OZIL GIVES THE GUNNERS THE LEAD.

8:52 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

GOAL! Ozil the provider opens the scoring for the Gunners.

8:53 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Simple stuff from the Arsenal. Ramsey chipped it into the area, Giroud knocked it down and Ozil somehow was able to stay over the volley.

0-1!

8:53 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Arsenal are 0-2 up and running away with this one! The Ox with a sharp shot back across Boruc and in off the post.

8:54 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

GOAL !!! TWO IN A MINUTE AS THE OX PUTS THE GUNNERS TWO UP

8:54 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Ramsey with assist again as Nacho played a ball for Alexis that was cut out and made it , who played in the Ox and his shot went in off the post.

8:57 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Cech superbly tips over a shot from Harry Arter.

8:57 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

The Gunners should hold on , which would put Citeh in fourth. COR!

8:58 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

A pass from Harry Arter was just too strong for Marc Pugh and easily gathered by Cech.

8:59 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Yeah - this result would put Arsenal in third.

Oh - Nacho went down in the box there. DIdn't really see it.

8:59 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

oH!!!! MArc Pugh was clean through ,but took just too long to shoot and was easily tackled.

9:01 AM

Are you ready for a really early kickoff next Sunday involving the Gunners?

9:03 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Sure thing. What is it - 7am EST/6am CST?

9:05 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Bournemouth have had their chances. Unless they can muster something in the next 10 minutes you wonder whether Bournemouth might be tempted to change things at half-time. Grabban would be a logical introduction to partner Afobe and add a bit of movement in threatening areas.

9:06 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Hey boys,
I am going to be a missing link today
I'll be around for this match but have to go walkies at some point. Then, our old neighbors won tickets and invited us to go to the Harlem Globetrotters... we don't really want to go but we couldn't say no. I have to leaver around half time!
Sigh... of course, United will probably be stinking it up and I'll be pleased to leave!

Again, LVG says they are playing 'Sparkling' football
Agains Derby and Stoke.. how are Stoke doing at the moment?

9:07 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Correct mate. That dreaded time as far as I'm concerned. I agree with your assessment too.

9:15 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

We'll be around for the 50th

Tom is a BIG Broncos fan so we are in the Orange corner tonight... even though they have chosen to wear white. The even # SB have the AFC being the home team and get to wear their home jerseys BUT the Broncos are 0-4 in SB wearing orange so they chose white. The year they did win as a home team their shirts were blue!

We have a soft spot for the Panthers too because of our friends in Charlotte.

9:16 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Cech did well to block from Adam SMith off a nice long diagonal from Andrew Surman. The corner was cleared

9:17 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

I'm going for the Panthers because I despise Peyton.

9:17 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Arsenal go in 0-2 and in control of this match. Yes - Bournemouth have had their chances but Wenger will be happy so far.

9:17 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

The Gunners are two up at the half thanks to two goals in the space of about a minute and a half.

9:18 AM

9:20 AM

9:32 AM

Back on at the Vitality. Not sure what The Cherries can do about this deficit.

9:33 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Naughty by Ramsey on Afobe.

9:33 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Curses - I'll have to watch old 60 Minutes episodes on my DVR.

9:33 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Not much, but the Cherries actually put in a decent performance in the first half. The score does not actually reflect how the first half went.

9:34 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Kate's favorite player was using some unsavory language directed at Kevin Friend. I guess he's fluent in English or at least the profane words.

9:36 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

A decent effort from Matt Ritchie that is just over from just outside the D

9:37 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Great skill by Adam Smith as he juggled then volleyed into the side netting

9:38 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Oh - into the side netting from the famous 18th century economic Adam Smith.

9:38 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

BOOM BOOM!!! If the Cherries come from Behind then Charlie Daniels will be singing with some Jack Daniels.

9:41 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Arsenal are definitely taking the foot off the gas - a risky proposition.

9:41 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Oh - good save by Boruc from Sanchez. Arsenal are always capable on the break.

9:41 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Boruc pushes around a shot from Alexis

9:41 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Giroud heads straight to Boruc off the corner.,

9:42 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Giroud with a nasty foul on Adam Smith and booked for that. Definitely uneconomical.

9:43 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

9:46 AM

9:49 AM

9:51 AM

Well wide by Matt Ritchie , looking more like Lionel after thatr great run

9:52 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

A&M is a pretty competitive school to get into, though, right?

Must be UT people having a laugh.

9:53 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Josh King on for Surman on for Matt Ritchie as that adds one to the MUFC Academy factor and the same to the Hammers Academy factor.

9:53 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

It's a state school , so similar to UF and compatible to UT. Melanie can get in, but they don't offer her major. UT does , but Elizabeth doesn't want her going there because it's too much of a party school.

9:54 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Wenger is throwing Coq au Vin on to keep things together. Conservative move on his part.

9:54 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Good trivia question - the four managers in English footie history who have managed clubs in more than 1,000 matches. Wenger and Fergie are obvious.

9:56 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

The right thing for Arsene to do, two up with just over twenty minutes to play. They need to get three points out of this and can ill afford to throw away a lead.

9:57 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

The others are Sir Matt and a bloke who managed Villa for about 35 years from the late 1800s to the late 20s. I don;t know his name.

9:58 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Sorry about the result at ER.

10:00 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Yeah - not a good one. But we're reasonably safe.

10:00 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Good block by Kos from the drive by Stanislaus.

10:01 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

A pass from Charlie Daniels intended for Josh King was just too long then Junior Stanilaus had a shot deflect off of Kos and straight to Cech

10:02 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

I will take a draw at SB, given Chelsea's recent form.

10:02 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Lewis Grabban, who is starting his second spell with the Cherries, is on for another striker, was also signed in the January transfer window, which is Afobe.

10:04 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

The fizz has really gone out of this match. It's as if both teams are ready for the final whistle.

10:05 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Yeah - The Cherries have thrown in the towel. They'll have more important matches to come.

10:07 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Gibbs is on for Alexis. Might as well, two goals up with just under ten minutes remaining

10:08 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Not surprisingly, Wenger isn't risking any more of Alexis' services. Gibbs on for him.

10:08 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Both goals were scored in the space of ninety seconds. Less time then we spend in the bog.

10:09 AM

A great cross from Stanislaus was cut out as Josh King was about to connect in the six yard box

10:13 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

A shot from Harry Arter lands in Row Q.

10:14 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Boruc prevents more damage as Ramsey streaks through on goal. Arsenal could have used a few more goals today to close the GD gap with the Spuds.

10:17 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Great double save by Cech there to keep the clean sheet. He's saved them several points this season.

10:18 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Great double save from Cech

10:19 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Theo on for Giroud to waste time.

10:20 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

It's over as the Gunners win 0-2 thanks to goals in the space of 90 seconds. A professional, but not spectacular performance.

10:21 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

So that's another away win for the Gunners. They're level with Spurs but worse off on GD and so third.

10:22 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Now - for the biggie. United v. Chelski. I'll be back for that one in a tick.

10:22 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Both teams are unchanged for the match at the Bridge:

Chelsea (4-2-3-1) Courtois; Ivanovic, Zouma, Terry, Azpilicueta; Mikel, Matic; Willian, Fabregas, Oscar; Costa.
Subs: Begovic, Baba Rahman, Cahill, Loftus-Cheek, Pedro, Traore, Hazard.

Manchester United (4-2-3-1) De Gea; Darmian, Smalling, Blind, Borthwick-Jackson; Fellaini, Carrick; Lingard, Mata, Martial; Rooney.

11:02 AM

Bit of chatter on the Guardian blog about the practice of "hipster numbering" of player's shirts. I do miss the old days when you could immediately tell the player's role from his number.

Here's a question for you - if Brucey was "#4" and Pallister was "#6," who was #5 in that side?

I always thought that you missed out on Martin O'Neill by hanging on to Ferg for so long.

Courtois does well to push around a curling effort from the Martial Arts School

Oh - great stuff from Courtois there - out for yet another corner.

Gooner is pointing out that this is yet another match that NBC Sports has allowed the partisan ex-Chelski man Graeme LeSaux to commentate on.

Chelsea break off a United corner, but United recover.

Not sure who wore #5. Sounds like an Abbot and Costello skit, but point taken even though I would prefer three.

It could be a long afternoon of the soul for Ivanovic against Martial, who looks the most dangerous player on the pitch.

I can't remember, either. Sharpe was #7.

Boris Becker is in attendance. Is he a Chelsea fan?

I think Sharpe was gone by then. He was a promising young player who didn't pan out and was gone before too long. i think Keano may have been #5.

United have got to take advantage of these set pieces. #8.

Good point about Martin O'Neill , but there was no way to know that. Now it's too late for Martin, who probably is not interested in that job any longer.

We benefited from that - Sharpe had a great career at Elland Road, including winning a title with us in 1991.

Now number nine. None of the first eight have been productive. Chelsea have scrambled it clear.

He did? I thought he was with us early in the Premier League era and wasn't Leeds's title in 1992?
