The Plot Thickens
It's a big, big weekend in the Premiership this weekend, chaps. It all starts early doors at the Stadium of Light tomorrow morning with United's trip to Sunderland. That's followed by a bunch of rubbish matches at 10am. But then we finish up with the relegation battle between Newcastle and, eep, Chelski. Loads at stake. Don't forget to join me for all the LOB banter.

Good morning mate. Fred and I are up , raring to go.
Morning, MUR - welcome!
Cheers mate. I looked at the time of the post. Early to bed and early to rise?
With 13 games of the season to go, time’s running out a little for both of these clubs. Manchester United are 12 points off the title pace set by Leicester City, and six off the Champions League places.
Sunderland’s need is certainly the greater, though. It’s not quite got to desperation levels yet, but they’re four points shy of safety right now, and with a none-too-friendly goal difference either.
Early to bed after a long and tough week, mate. Glad to be able to relax and enjoy some footer today.
Elizabeth and I were out having a few ales as part of an early Valentine's Day celebration. She did get some Black Russian coffee when she was out shopping and I will surely need it since United are playing early doors.
Roon and former United defender, John O'Shea lead the teams out of the tunnel prior to auditioning for " Dad's Army."
The teams coming out at the Stadium of Light now:
Sunderland: Mannone, Yedlin, Kone, O’Shea, Kirchhoff, Van Aanholt, M’Vila, Cattermole, Khazri, Defoe, N’Doye.
Subs: Brown, Rodwell, Borini, Matthews, Pickford, Toivonen, Honeyman.
Manchester United: De Gea, Darmian, Smalling, Blind, Borthwick-Jackson, Carrick, Schneiderlin, Lingard, Mata, Martial, Rooney.
Subs: Depay, Romero, Ander Herrera, Andreas Pereira, Weir, Keane, Love.
Referee: Andre Marriner (West Midlands)
We've booked into one of the nicest restaurants in town, the site of our first date, for a romantic dinner tonight. However, we're not sure about it - it's meant to be 5F tonight. Brrr!
Yikes! You should be here. It's as if Spring back came to our area this week. Warm days with low humidity and cool evenings.
They're off from the SOL
The Black Cats get us going wearing their traditional strip. United in an odd combination of black tops and white shorts.
The strong coffee will come in handy. After all, we're watching United!
Fred is joining us too. I fed him and have petted him, which is nice under the circumstances.
Well, they've been a bit more entertaining recently. Sunderland have also been in better form under Fat Sam in 2016. Six points from eight matches.
Van Arnholt wins a free kick off of Darmian. I thought he ran into him
DAMN > The Black Cats score off the free kick
Sunderland have an early free kick chance.
It's whipped in and - oh dear - evades Twilight and goes in off the post!
0-1!
Well, that's changed the dynamic of this match in a hurry. Now United have to take the match to Sunderland.
It was a miss hit free kick. Dafoe tried toback heel it and completely missed it as it fooled De Gea and went into the back of the net. A great start for Khazri on his debut and a bit fortunate too.
Almost an immediate response from Rooney. His effort was blocked out.
Great block by Van Arnholt from Roon as United attempt to tie it up.
Fred is starting his nap after a lively start to the morning. Hopefully, that is symbolic.
The match-up between Kung Fu Panda and the American Deandre Yedlin should be interesting.
Elizabeth and I decided to celebrate Valentine's last night . I agreed since the match of the weekend is on at the crack of bloody dawn tomorrow and she wants us to go visit the in-laws on Monday. Process of elimination.
Lingard is down, holding his ankle. He was caught by Kierkhoff after making a tackle. he seems to be okay
Oh - Defoe was in there but just didn't have enough room to provide an adequate finish.
PHEW!!!! United are looking like the team that is second from bottom as Darmian is tackled and ping pong action in the United box as Dafoe shoots just wide.
That makes sense. It is an early, early start tomorrow.
Are you aware that Leeds play on Monday? We will be up at the in-laws as part of our three day weekend.
Ah - Darmian had acres of space to find a good cross but hits the first man with his ball in. What a waste!
I saw that - it's during my office hours. I may or may not be able to catch that.
An O'Shea tackle leads to a United corner taken by Blind and headed out by Kiekchoff.
Fat Sam has a problem here, with a player down with a hammy strain. It's Jan Kierkoff. He'll need to come off.
Kierckhoff, who has been off to a good start is down, injured and looks to be done for the day. That will be a huge loss for the Black Cats. I think Jack Rodwell is set to replace him.
Sorry about that, mate. Perhaps you can record the match. We will since the in-laws don't get BEIN.
Van Arnholt shoots wide after a long throw from Yeltsin was not properly headed away.
Yeah - I may DVR it but I also might have a lighter afternoon on Monday. I know I have one appointment at 3:30 (aka 'half time') but otherwise shouldn't be bothered.
There are times when Darmian's delivery is that of an incompetent comedian.
It's against the Teesiders, so it will be a challenge.
A west London Derby is BEIN played and team for your house has taken the lead at JFH's lads. Not a nice way to treat a legend from ER,.
The goal was scored by Leeds old boy , Ross , so it's a fair cop.
Big appeals for a penalty but nothing doing from Andre Marriner.
Darmian is definitely having a mare and should be subbed at halftime. The Black Cats want a penalty as Khazri shoots and blocked by Schneiderlin
Ross has done well for the Cottagers.
The replay shows ball to hand. Not a penalty.
The Cottagers go two up at JFH's lads.
Moussa Dembele with the goal , but not the one from SFL.
Well wide by Khazri after Smalling was caught dilly dallying by Dafoe, who played through the debut boy.
Roon wind United's second corner of the match. As earlier, the corner from Blind was headed out by the first man, then a shot from Smalling comes off O'Shea for another.
N'Doye , the Boy, heads out the corner from Blind.
Mata side foots a first time shot straight to Vito off a pass from Roon.
YIKES!!!!! The Cottagers are three up at JFH's lads seconds before the halftime whistle,.
United need a bit more cut and thrust to their attack.
Tom Cairney with the goal as the Cottagers are three up at the half in the battle of the West End Boys.
They need something because they look really toothless.
I don't understand why that isn't obstruction at the very least. You see so few indirect free kicks these days.
Hey Boys,
I am here to watch United stinking it up again!!
When is going to change???
Not sure how much I will be here today. Have a certain Birthday Girl to take care of!
Darmian is down after a collision with Khazri,.
Good morning UWS. Happy Birthday to Kathy. You will probably be better off starting the birthday celebrations than watching United.
That's it for Darmian as he holds his shoulder and is replaced by Scots U-21 international , Love pre Valentine's Day
GOAL!!!
Martial scores!!
ABOUT BLOODY TIME UNITED
YES!!!! UNITED KARATE CHOP THEIR WAY TO AN EQUALIZER. FOR THE FIRST TIME THIS MATCH , UNITED PLAYED SOME DECENT STUFF AS MANAONE SAVED A SHOT FROM MATA THEN KUNG FU PANDA DINKED IN THE REBOUND FROM A NARROW ANGLE.
It came seconds after United's debut boy came on. Got to love it.
Oh dear - it's the Nocito Curse for me today. I thought I could risk a trip to the bog just before half time and I've missed Martial equalizer.
Morning, UWS!
Donald Love, a Scots U-21 internatioanl from Rochdale , sees United playing better stuff as United win another corner,.
United take it short and the cross from Lingard is just too high for Smalling.
Great finish from a tight angle!
I'm staying in this seat
Sorry Bob. Hopefully you will be around to witness some United goals.
I hope so! Fortunately, it was quite a significant finish for me, too, in there. And from a difficult angle.
Four minutes of stoppage to come.
United are still pretty useless going forward!!!
Did you see Will Keane is on the bench for United today
Called back from loan in January
Scored a boatload midweek in a 7-1 win
What the hell has happened to Jack Rodwell's career. At one point, I thought he might make a great playmaker for England. Now he's toiling away in a relegation battling side and could well drop divisions next season. Did his short stint at Citeh ruin him?
I heard about that. I think it was for the reserves vs the Canaries reserves. Not sure what that means.
I think Rodwell has been injury ridden and may not be the same player again
Ht
1-1
Not good enough
It's 1-1 at the half and strange as it may sound, they have stunk , but seem to be in the driver's seat
There are no reserves any more... it is U21s and everyone hates it!
the U21 league is pathetic apparently
What a shame. So what happens to those that can't make the first team squad that are too old for the U 21 League?
The second half is underway.
Second half underway
We're back on at the Stadium of Light. Darmian is off to hospital and Roon has picked up a yellow for a cynical tug back.
O' Shea was booked at the the end of the first half. Now Roon is booked for a foul on Cattermole as both skippers are in the book.
Cattermole has a shot deflect off of Dafoe and straight to De Gea.
Defoe is not only a ball hog; he's also a bit of a goal hanger.
How about doppleganger?
Borthy is called for a foul on N'Doye.
Could be an evil twin, I suppose.
Useless start for United
The free kick from Khazri is headed out by Roon for a corner. The corner from Khazri is headed out and after some ping pong action off his return cross, United now are on the attack.
Fred is in deep sleep on the couch , signifying that he is not any more impressed than UWS.
Oh - Rooney turns it round for a corner. That came off his hand, which was above his head, though the close proximity of the players to each other presumably informed the decision to let that one go. If the referee didn’t, it was a penalty and a second yellow for Rooney! But that would have been super harsh; he was right on O’Shea’s back.
Next up it's the Baggies vs the Toffees on NBCSN and the Canaries vs the Hammers on Born in the USA.
Correct. United got away with one there .
Yedlin did well to stand that ball up but no one attacked it.
And now Cattermole finds a pass but Blind blocks it out. United under the cosh.
OH!!!! A timely goal line block by Blind from Dafoe keeps it tied as young Love was caught out of position. I didn't love it.
United fans won't be happy to see a relegation battler putting their side to the test today.
Kone called for a foul on Mata,
Agreed. We should expect better from United.
Now Mata is booked. He lost the ball then tripped his opponent.
What the hell was that from Mata? Completely mishit the pass and then picked up a yellow for a rash tackle back.
Now Carrick into the book for a late one.
Now Carrick is booked as Andre Marriner hands out his cards the day before Valentines .
United STINK
United saved by De Gea again
Oh - N'Doye was in on goal there but Twilight did so well to keep him out.
PHEW!!!! Great kick save from De Gea off of N'Doye as he was played through by Cattermole on a great break.A nice corner from Khazri was whipped in as a shot went sideways and then a bicycle kick from Kone was over.
Memphis on for Lingard on his birthday.
3.15 to come on now.
I didn't love that foul on Khazri about 25 yards from the United goal.
Sunderland have a chance now.
BOOM BOOM!!!! Better than 3.16
De Gea comfortably saves the free kick from Khazri.
The Black Cats lost home win vs United was nineteen years ago. United won the title and the Black Cats were relegated.
Memphis not off to a good start vs Yeltsin.
The way he has been he should be D1.14
I've missed a lot of this second half.. have United had any chances?
Mata has a shot blocked off a run and pass from 3.14 metres away
Mata has a shot blocked
D1.14 beats a man but took an age to get it over
Nice one, UWS. There should be a negative sign in front of that
Other than that blocked effort, no United chances of notes. The Black Cats have had a few chances.
Borini is on for Dafoe.
De Gea does well to turn over a curling effort from N'Doye
Carrick heads out the corner from Khazri
Nice solo run from Yeltsin after Roon conceded possession , but it ended with a nice tackle from B_J
I have never been so ho-hum with a Untied side
They don't deserve anything
A long range effort from Mata is tamely to Vito.
A good thing that I drank some really strong Coffee earlier. Elizabeth brought me some Black Russian flavored coffee.
How can LVG last till the end of the season let alone another one after that!!!!
They are struggling against EVERY team
PATHETIC
Borthy has a cross come off of Van Arnholt for a United corner.
Why not bring on Keane.. he's scores goals
So does Wilson...oh.. he's at Brighton... idiots
United win another corner.
No one attacks the ball in the six yard box
WHERE IS EVERYONE?
The corner eludes everyone and is out.
JFH's lads score a consolation goal vs the team from Bob's house.
In years passed, United have 13 minutes to get the winner
NOW, 13 minutes to hold on to a lucky draw
I agree with you, mate. Enough is enough. You'll be lucky to get into the Europa League on this form.
Wilson wasn't scoring when playing for United. It's this horrible defensive system.
I also can't see Sunderland surviving the drop. My pick is Norwich, Sunderland and Villa.
Lucky thirteen not lucky?
It's starting to look that way, Bob unless the great escape is on for one of them
I think you're right about the bottom three
I still think WBA may be in trouble. I think I picked them too
The team from Bob's house win 1-3 at JFH's place thanks to those first half goals.
Useless effort from D1.14
Oh - that was the tamest shot I've ever seen from 3.15.
Talking about the EL, United are in action in Denmark on Thursday against the team that eliminated a Saints reserve team in August. The first half is when I have lunch and the second half is during my conference period.
What will LVG say about this?
We played well
We had possession
We were unlucky
The players aren't attacking like tell them to
I'm a genius
GOAL
DAMN !!!! KONE HEADS IN A CORNER FROM KHAZRI WITH A FREE HEADER.
WHY KEEP HIM HERE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Sorry, lads. Poor marking from Smalling and a free header. Twilight can't keep it out.
2-1.
This is deserved by Sunderland
The Black Cats lead 2-1 with a goal from a corner taken by someone that LVG should have signed.
You don't have to apologize
They are getting what they deserve
Being dominated by a bottom two club
Agreed, UWS. Now the Black Cats are points from safety, pending the result in the late match.
Exactly, UWS . I agree 100% except that they are now third from bottom.
A win and United would have gained points on at least TWO of the teams in front of them... now 5 points behind and one more game played
West Ham win at Carrow Road and United will drop below the Hammers
I don't want Sunderland to get the points
Toivonen is on for Cattermole. Will Keane is on for Scheniderlin . His only other United appearance was the home defeat vs Blackburn on SAF's 70th birthday
I don't want Bournemouth to get in trouble
United fell behind... have the showed ANY urgency at all
Have they changed anything?
If the Saints win at the Swans then they may be only a point behind United
Great save by Vito from Memphis
The start of your winter break, UWS?
This is sad. Van Gaal has to go after this one. This one virtually rules you out of the top four.
Next up Shrewsbury... Im not confident! I won't be able to see it. I have to stay late at school on Mondays
Arsenal next in the league... certain loss at home there
A draw wouldn't even be a good score here
Memphius has a close range effort deflected for a corner after a pass from Roon was not cleared
A big appeal for a penalty waved away by Marriner. That would have been harsh on O'Shea who was hit on the elbow. Ball to hand.
Useless corner from Blind
What a pathetic corner
Goes into the six yard box....100 feet in the air!!
Straight out for a throw in
The dubious goals panel would be checking the last goal for the dubious defending.
Four minutes of stoppage time.
4 added minutes
United won't create anything in that time... let alone scoring one...or two
Stupid foul by Smalling
WHY FOUL???
It will be the first loss for United at the SOL in 19 years, which they lost by this scoreline.
Another stupid United foul.
Ricky Lee Everett: No way LVG stays now after losing to this miserable Sunderland side.
Kunal Gupta: Alarm bells. Issue is, they've been ringing since Christmas. For the sake of every United fan, someone please take action on LVG.
SADLY... I don't think anything will happen
Will LVG get into another confrontation with a reporter , who asks a valid question. Why not expend that energy during the match instead of press conferences?
NO URGENCY AT ALL
Who's threatening.... Sunderland of course
I agree with Gupta. Unfortuantely , what Evrettt is proposing , probably won't happen till the end of the season
Into the side netting by Van Arnholt
United just passing around midfield
Fails to get it into the box
It's over
BLOODY PATHETIC
It's over and the Black Cats deservedly win 2-1 . They are now juts a point from safety as United look set to continue to move down the table.
I'm off for walkies in the frozen tundra!
-40 windchill today!
Sorry, lads. That was horrible. I suppose you could say that one of those penalty claims could have been given, but they didn't really deserve better than a 2-2 draw. It's a huge win for Sunderland but a sad collapse for United. Hoping that will usher LVG out of OT.
Take care, mate - it is freezing out there. I've got dig out the driveway, shortly.
United are SIX points behind CIteh
Keep warm, UWS. I would discuss the delightful weather here , but neither of you would probably be interested,
Both televised matches feature teams that had midweek marathon cup replays and both are on the road. The Hammers , who scored a list minute ET winner vs Pool, are at the Canaries while the Baggies who won a penalty shoot at Posh despite being out played , are at the Toffees , who have benched Timmy.
They're off from Goodison and CR
Russell Martin with an effort over from just outside the Hammers box
I'm back for kick off
The wind was even too much for Shadow!
Ive turned it over to Carrow Road instead of Goodison
Great block by Olsson from Coleman after a pass from Lennon wAS NOT CLEARED.
Lennon has a pass cleared by Yacoub for a corner
welcome back, UWS. Glad you are back in the warm house.
Newport County defeated Carlisle United 1-0 in an early kickoff.
Brady fouls Payet . A chance for the Hammers
The free kick is headed out and the Hammers keep possession
