Sunday in the Premier League
A very good Sunday morning to everyone out there in LOB land. I'm getting to the footer a little later this morning, having made the strategic decision to skip the early offering of Watford v. Stoke. Stoke have just wrapped up a 0-1 away win in that one. We still have two other far more interesting matches on offer. We start with Arsenal v. Bournemouth and finish the day with United v. West Ham. Join me for all the usual LOB banter.
400 Comments:
Good morning, Bob. I woke up around the time you posted the thread. Based on the highlights, we seem like two wise sages.
Next, it's the Gunners vs the Cherries at the EM. Gooner, dad, and Simon must be licking their chops at a victory
Arsenal enter this match in that vaunted Wenger Cup position of fourth but in grave danger of being cut off from the title chasing pack of Chelski, Liverpool and City. They'll need a win today against Eddie Howe's good footballing side, no question.
Morning, MUR - thanks for suggesting the lie in - it was nice to get that in before throwing myself back into the fray again.
They're off from the EM
First sighting of Jack Wilshere, who is on loan with the Cherries and will spend the match in the stands. And we're away.
The team news:
Arsenal: Cech; Debuchy, Mustafi, Koscieny, Montreal; Elneny, Xhaka; Walcott, Özil, Oxlade-Chamberlain; Sanchez. Subs: Gibbs, Gabriel, Ramsey, Giroud, Ospina, Iwobi, Coquelin.
Bournemouth: Federici; A Smith, Francis, S Cook, B Smith; Gosling, Ake, Arter; King, C Wilson, Stanislas. Subs: Pugh, Afobe, Allsop, Fraser, Mings, Mousset, Ibe.
Referee: Mike Jones (Cheshire)
Cheers, mate. I was thinking the same thing.
Oh - Ozil had a golden opportunity to open the scoring there. His side-footed effort was blocked.
Wilshere is ineligible to play because he's on loan from the Gunners
Then that famous economist, Adam Smith, shot just wide at the other end
Stephen Cook's challenge is the first test of Mike Jones' patience. And he's in the book.
That dish was a bit overcooked as Steve Cook is booked for a foul on Alexis.
Nice political science reference, MUR. I suppose that Smith will be looking for supply and demand from his teammates.
You're off on a tear with the puns already, mate. Well in!
I don't mean to gripe, but what exactly was the purpose of that early match or even playing on Sunday.Neither team played in Europe in midweek, neither team is in the Capital One Cup,neither team merits a police enforced match. It should have been played yesterday. Your thoughts?
Cheers, mate. You too. Plenty of demand and very little supply based on the highlights of the early match
Now it's Francis into the book - they're having trouble living with the Ox's pace.
Simon Francis booked for a foul from behind on the speedy Ox inches outside the Cherries box.
Good free kick chance for the Arse.
Played short to El Neny but his shot is blocked by Ake.
Ake does well to block from El Neny from the short free kick as he did earlier from Ozil
Total domination by Arsenal now - playing it about for fun. Reminds me of Leeds' play against Rotherham yesterday.
Aren't these the same two uniforms I saw at the New York Stadium yesterday? Are you and the Gooner playing a prank on Yours Truly?
GOAL! Bournemouth gift Alexis a gilt-edged chance.
1-0!
Cook is having a 'mare and Eddie Howe won't be happy with that soft backpass. Alexis latched on to it and finished easily.
GOAL !!!! CYBER MONDAY COMES A DAY EARLY AS STEVE COOK GIFTS ALEXIS A GOAL AND THE GUNNERS TAKE THE LEAD.
Bournemouth are in danger of being overrun now. The difference is that the blue team is on the ropes and the red team is rampant today.
Nearly a second as Federici failed to punch away , but the Cherry pies got away with it.
Now Alexis goes down - looked soft. Mike Dean not impressed.
Alexis goes down , looking for a penalty , but Mike Jones is having none of it.
Ian is not a master of the puns, so here is my take on the goal:
Cyber Monday has come a day early since that goal was given away so cheaply. What a bargain for the Gunners. He could have used this one. The Thanksgiving leftovers were not tasty because the Cook definitely under cooked that meal.
Debuchy is off injured and rep[laced by Gabriel , but not Peter.
Adam Smith won a free kick that led to two Cherries corners
Stanislaus wins another Cherries corner as the Cherries are starting to settle down
Bournemouth have a penalty - well, I never!!!
Hard to call there. Wilson seemed to go down easily under Nacho's challenge.
The corner skips across the box and then Ozil gifts possession to the Cherries then
PENALTY CHERRIES AS NACHO TRIPS CALLY WILSON IN THE BOX
Callum Wilson to take....
And scores! 1-1!
GOAL!!!! CALLY WILSON ALMOST PASSES THE PENALTY INTO THE BACK OF THE NET , SENDING CECH THE WRONG WAY
Ian , the anoraker , said that it''s the first ever goal scored by the Cherries against the Gunners in their history
Kos booked for foul from behind on Harry Arter
Oh - Adam Smith had a great chance to put Bournemouth ahead. This match has turned around in seconds!
OH!!!! That was a costly miss by Adam Smith as he had a free header in the six yard box and headed over after Ake headed on the free kick.
Ian has confirmed that Mustafi talked himself into a booking when the penalty was awarded
Now Ake bundles Alexis over. Nice free kick chance for the Arsenal.
Now Ake concedes a free kick just outside the Gunners box.
A tastier clearance as Cook heads away the free kick from Ozil
Oh - Brad Smith was in on goal but he chose the wrong option going for the near post. Should have squared it.
Talking about economical, Harry Arter was signed for 4,000 Bob from Woking after being rejected by the Hammers Academy
Talking about academy rejects, Brad Smith had a near post effort saved by Cech. The pool reject nearly scored.
Sarcastic cheers as Cally Wilson is flagged offside.
Eddie Howe has done a marvelous job assembling this good footballing side from scraps.
I here cursing in the direction of Alex. AM I imagining that?
MY how he has done a magnificent job!
No - I'm sure that's true.
Ian is lobbying him to replace Arsene at the Gunners. That is a possibility
Bournemouth are undoubtedly playing the better stuff at the moment. They are popping the ball about nicely and Arsenal look stodgy. Howe’s team have had four attempts to Arsenal’s three so far!
I'm sure the amount of action in this match has doubled that of the early match already and we're only a third of the way through.
The Arsenal fans have gotten so used to the idea of Continental flair that I'd be surprised if Eddie got a look in. What about at Old Trafford?
You're a great statto, mate. Well done. This sis a great contest
I caught the tail end of Watford v. Stoke and even the commentators seemed bored.
Eddie Howe plays a continental style, but I would definitely take him at OT. I'm sure Jose will wear out his welcome before Arsene retires.
El Neny shoots high and wide after another poor clearance was under cooked.,
I'm sure they were.I still don't see how that would be a police enforced kickoff. They're not exactly the most famous teams in the Prem.
Ozil and Alexis have a telepathic understanding? I haven't seen that today.
The commentators are debating the merits of playing with Alexis or with Giroud. Why not play them together???
The Emirates is silent and Bournemouth continue to enjoy themselves, even if the past few minutes have passed by without any notable action.
I think Alexis and the Beaker may be tired from their midweek encounter. Giroud has been used as a super sub against tired defenders as will probably be the case today
Josh King is guilty of a really poor pass as the Cherries countered off a Gunners corner.
According to Ian, Cally Wilson was a trainee in the Coventry City Academy, but left football to do some kick boxing before joining the Cherries. Surely, Coventry City must be kicking themselves over that decision. They could surely use his services.
They could indeed - what a fall from grace for the Sky Blues.
I'm ready for the half so I can go to the bog. TI haven't left because I dare not take my eyes off this match
Harry Arter is lucky to escape Mike Dean's wrath.
Three minutes of stoppage time as Harry Arter got away with one there. Surely, the Gooner will curse that decision.
It's actually Mike Jones as the Gooner will be more than willing to remind us. Somehow, I don't think he's on Gooner's Christmas card list
OH!!!! Alexis has a shot cannon off the bar as the Gunners were unlucky not to take the lead.
It's 1-1 at the end of a fantastic first half. A really great contest
The second half is underway from the EM
We're back on at the Emirates for the second half now. Arsenal can ill afford to drop points here.
Nathan Ake fouls Theo
You're absolutely right - it is Mike Jones - my mistake.
The curling free kick from Ozil eludes everyone despite a decent delivery
Josh King wins a corner off of Mustafi
Expect to see Giroud come on for the last half hour if things stay the same.
Now the Gunners counter.
No problem, mate.
Both teams will feature in televised matches next weekend. The Gunners will be at the Olympic Stadium in the late match on Saturday while the Cherries host Pool at 8:30 next Sunday as we're back to a normal schedule next weekend
GOAL! Theo nods Arsenal back into the lead.
GOAL !!!THEO HEADS THE GUNNERS INTO A 2-1 LEAD.
Nice interplay there between Alexis and Ozil and then Nacho chipped up a lovely volleyed cross for Theo to head home. That's Arsenal at their best.
2-1!
Ozil put in a tasty cross that was pinged across the goal by Nacho that Theo headed in at the far post in a possession started with a nice cross field pass by Alexis.
MY Howe the Cherries manager is none too pleased.
Ian calls this a helter skelter affair. He's a Charlie Manson fan?
Impudent flick. Who's trying to be fancy, Ian?
Dan Gosling sings his way to a corner off of Peter Gabriel
El Neny heads out the corner and Alexis releases Theo down the right before Federici gathers a cross.
Xakha Khan releases ALexis down the left, but his pass to Ozil was gathered by Federici.
Great block by Cook from the Ox then the Ox ends the move with a foul and a minor tantrum.
Alexis booked for a foul on Harry Arter and deservedly so. Like Scholes, tackling is not his specialty.
Banik Afobe ,a former Gunners trainee , is on for Cally Wilson. This is strength on for speed.
Boom boom, mate - HOWE witty of you. :-)
Afobe on for Cally Wilson now.
Probably no room for Giroud today then.
Nice anoraking on Afobe's background, mate. I had no idea he had an Arsenal association.
Cheers, mate. Glad to help with the puns
Thanks, but Ian beat me to the punch on Afobe. I just him.
It's the normal schedule next weekend. Saturday starts with Citeh vs Chelsea and concludes with a DC Derby as the Hammers host the Gunners. Leeds also host a much improved Villa side in the late match on Saturday.
Uh oh - Jim Beglin is giving you a run for your money with a "Xhaka Can" pun there.
I wonder if that is BEin televised next weekend. I'll be in DC with the Gooner and Dad.
Stanislaus is down with a calf injury and it appears that Jordan Ibe will replace him.
Of course. You will be celebrating Gooner's birthday.I'm guessing he gets dibs on the telly unless you all plan to go to one of DC's many fine pubs.
Simon Francis wins a corner off of the Ox. The corner from Francis is cleared/ and the Guinners counter.
Could easily have been a penalty there for the Cherries. Arter booked for dissent.
That looked a hand ball by Nacho off the pass from Francis . Howe was that not a penalty? Arter booked for protesting.
Then the Gunners get it all wrong on the counter as Alexis puts the Ox through and his touch is horrible with just Federici to beat
Ramsey and Giroud being prepared to come on - I'm surprised.
Hey Boys,
Finally sitting down this morning
Watched the F1 GP, took a walk and did errands
Watched some of the first half of this match
Bournemouth have done well. Could have been in the lead. Their pen was less of a pen than United's non-pen at OT
I guess there will be room for Giroud, but not Desmond.
Miki and Wazza both on the bench
I think they deserved the starting spot!
The Ox and Theo coming off.
Ramsey on for the ox and Giroud for Theo. Kate will be pleased.
Good morning, UWS> I got some extra kip and skipped the first match. I agree with your statements. Both were excellent on Thanksgiving Day
Oh - great save by Cech with his knees.
cech with a point blank saved
Great knee reflex save by Cech from Afobe as Desmond is trying to force his way into the EM
Welcome, UWS - how's your weather today?
I guess Cech would do well on a reflex test at the doctor's office
Nice and toasty warm in NY.Warm and sunny here in Harlingen . Warm enough to wear shorts.
El Neny does not walk like an Egyptian with his latest challenge.
Dreary and coldish
No white stuff though
You?
Naughty by Brad Smith on Ozil and the big Aussie is booked for an agricultural challenge.
Last roll of the dice for Eddie Howe - Mousset on for Brad Smith.
Mousset is on for Brad Smith. A striker of r a left back. Howe obvious is it that the Cherries need a goal ?
Sounds like Lakenheath weather in ENY. Ours is more like the Pirates of the Carribean
We had some Lake Effect stuff last night - but didn't stick. Just hoping that it's clear for my drive on Wed.
Interestingly, Walcott has gone off and has put a giant ice pack on his left shin.
De Gea, Valencia, Rojo, Jones, Darmian, Herrera, Pogba, Mata, Lingard, Rahsford and Ibra
Rooney, Miki and Bastian all on the bench
Carrick wil be missed
Where are you going Wednesday?
I would prefer Miki to Pogba.
He's headed to Alex to celebrate the Gooner's birthday. Wishing you a safe trip and it should be quite a weekend.
I'm off to a conference in DC and then I've got the weekend with the family. Gooner's birthday is Sunday.
Both Dahlgren teams face claret and blue opponents in the late Saturday match, but I'm guessing that Gooner gets dibs on what match is BEIN watched on the telly.
The substitutes combine on a lovely move. Great ball in from Ramsey but Giroud just couldn't direct the volley on goal.
The subs combine as Gordon Ramsey put in a tasty cross , but Giroud's header was wayward
Bournemouth have had 56% of the ball in this second half but they are just not doing enough to threaten Cech here.
Another tasty challenge as a shot from Gordon Ramsey is off of Cook for a Gunners corner
Dan Gosling booked for a challenge that looked more like that of Ryan
The free kick from Ozil is cleared.
Brucie's boys haven't lost yet, have they?
Celtic are up 2-0 in the League Cup Final up North
Mousset heads well wide off a great cross as a visit from Desmond doesn't seem on the cards
3-1 with a tap by Sanchez... Giroud made it
He is good
GOAL !!!! TE MATCH IS SEALED AS STOPPAGE TIME BEGINS . ALEXIS SCORES WITH AN EASY TAP IN TO MAKE IT 3-1.
Five minutes of stoppage time.
That Alexis goal will just about wrap things up. 3-1.
The Cherries were caught chasing an equalizer. A routine slide tackle and the ball made its way to Giroud, who played a one two with Ozil then laid it on a plate for Alexis to score with an easy tap in.
Relief for Gooner , Simon , and dad, who should all celebrate with some cherry pie.
I will take Sparky walkies at the conclusion of this match
A cheer for next weekend... stolen from my time at Carrow Road
Chim chiminey, Chim chiminey. Chim chim charoo
We hate those bastards in claret and blue
That's it as the Gunners defeat the Cherries 3-1. Next, is United vs the Hammers and the Saints vs the Toffees.
The Arse have won 3-1 but Bournemouth were quite impressive
Teams are out on the Old Trafford turf
COME ON MAN U
COME ON MAN U
COME ON MAN U
United need to score early and often
NBC are being like Fox... off for commercials
I'm back for the late one now. Are you lads feeling optimistic?
United attacked the Stretford End in the first half midweek but today it back to normal
Stretford End for the second half
They have the wrong audio for the game!!
It is the SOUTHAMPTON MATCH
Weird - we're hearing about the Southampton goal while there is nothing going on at OT.
GOAL !!!!! A HORRIBLE RETURN TO ST. MARY'S FOR KOEMAN AS CHARLIE AUSTIN GIVES THE SAINTS AN EARLY LEAD.
They had the United match on the there other match!
Now they have fixed the Sotton match but not this one!
AND BOTH GAMES HAVE EARLY GOALS
BLOODY NORAH
Bloody hell - now WH have scored at OT and they're still on the wrong audio!
I thought it was just me.
Finally, they have fixed it!!
Stupid foul that caused the free kick
BUGGER!!! SAKHO SCORES OFF FREE KICK FROM PAYET TO GIVE THE HAMMERS THE LEAD AT OT.
What a start to both matches!
Both games with a goal inside two minutes
Sorry about that, chaps - at least we have the right audio feed now.
Thomas commented that he didn't mind the wrong audio... we knew was was going on with both matches
Definitely a stupid foul by Linmgard on Payet and horrible defending off the free kick from Payet as it was too easy for Sakho to head in the free kick
Agreed with Thomas.
Why do teams have their center forward mark the other team's center forward. They can't defend
Here's hoping West Ham fall apart like they did at WHL
I don't think Herrera and Pogba is a good combination
Ibra offside but his shot was pretty weak
I clocked Charlie Austin's goal at 41 seconds as the Toffees lived up to their name with some defending by their soft center. A deflected cross made it to JWP two yards from goal . His shot was blocked and Charlie Austin scored from two inches out
44 seconds for the Saints goal
90 seconds for the Hammers goal
Second fastest goal conceded at OT in the Prem
Dunno what the fastest was
My question is why are forwards back defending. Just look at Lingard, who conceded that free kick. Surely Jose went over those details prior to kickoff, but was anyone listening?
I don't either. I'm sure there were plenty when SAF was in charge.
The latest in the Scottish LC Final is Celtic three up vs Aberdeen. Much easier than their midweek match vs BArca.
I'm surprised that you two anoraks don't know the answer to that one. Early doors here - plenty of time for United to come back.
Here we go...just passing it around
I understand switching the point of attack but United switch it and switch it back
We play the Hammers again on Wednesday in the EFL Cup then away to the Toffees in the late match Sun day. Both are trailing , so something will have to give on Sunday
Is it Jose's fault that two games out of three a goal conceded so early
Pass to Rash from Pogpants was atrocious
Weak effort on goal by Mata
Agreed, UWS. That was the point of firing LVG. Bob mentioned Eddie Howe as potential next United manager. Howe United desperately need something different
United fans not having a good day out. Cheer up, lads. You'll have a nice pie and Bovril at half time.
And in the other one, so late. We don't start well nor end well. Not so great ion between either.
I agree - United have a tradition of having British managers. I could easily see Eddie Howe replacing Jose.
The Hammers wanted a penalty for hand ball on Valencia . That was as weak as United's performance so far
Too hot for Barf frill. Probably a sandwich and a cool drink of water when the match ends.
