A Tale of Two Uniteds
It's not every day when our two favorite Uniteds are playing in the 4th Round of the FA Cup back to back, so I am relishing this morning. We start at 9am with a most romantic Cup tie between my beloved Leeds and Sutton United. Their tiny ground will be buzzing for sure. Then we've got United hosting Wigan Athletic at Old Trafford in the late game. Join me for what promises to be a special day of Cup footer.

Interesting atmosphere at Gander Green Lane this afternoon. Our lot have got off the bus and gone straight on to the pitch to get a feel of the artificial turf. According to Leeds legend Danny Mills, who's on commentary duties today, Leeds have been training on the artificial pitch at Thorp Arch all week. Glad to hear that they've been taking the preparations seriously.
Millwall and Watford need to push off, as they're cutting in to the pre-match time here, finishing up their drab outing. The Evil ones are currently 1-0 up over hapless Watford.
I am here boys al clean from a shower
Final whistle goes at the Den and another Prem team goes down... Fox goes to commercial!!!!!!!!!!
The Leeds match has started...idiots!
Bloody hell - Fox is rubbish. They've run the Millwall-Watford match over the allotted time and then have gone off for a commercial break all while we've kicked off at Gander Green Lane. Grrrrr!
FINALLY THEY ARE BACK!
The Rebecca wanna be says they are going straight out to Sutton...no you didn't...you went to commercial
Lots of changes for Leeds...not liking it
We're finally on the match now at a very hazy Gander Green Lane. Here are the starting teams:
Sutton United: Worner, Amankwaah, Collins, Gomis, May, Eastmond, Bailey, Spence, Deacon, Biamou, Downer
Leeds United: Silvestri, Coyle, McKay, Cooper, Denton, Grimes, Phillips, Whitehouse, Dallas, Doukara, Antonsson
Good morning ,lads. This is really odd. It reminds me of one summer when we visited relatives during the days of the old NASL and they went to a commercial break during the match and we missed a goal.
So - Gary Monk has made nine changes for the side that took on Forest in mid-week. Not happy with that at all. I hope to see some of the big boys in the second half.
Watford was the 11th Prem team to fall in the first two rounds..it's going to be 12 in a about 15 minutes. Hull are down 3-1 at Bob and Kate's place
RUDDY NORAH!!!
OH YES... OFFSIDE!!!
Fulham has scored a fourth!!!
Morning, boys - thanks for joining me!
Phew! Sutton have the ball in the net but it's ruled out for offside. An early warning for us not to balls this one up.
GOAL !!!! BLOODY HELL!! SUTTON UNITED TAKE THE LEAD.PHEW!!!! THEY DON'T Leeds were caught out by a long ball and the player blasted past the stranded Sylvester.
Wonder what side did Hull send out?
They beat United on Thursday with not a strong side
They play United on Wednesday
Someone's got clean the camera lens!!
Still only replay . When did that last happen in the Fourth Round?
I wonder if Kate is starting for the Cottagers or if she's being rested.
Here's the Hull side today:
Eldin Jakupovic
Omar Elabdellaoui
Curtis Davies
Tom Huddlestone
Andrew Robertson
Goebel Evandro
David Meyler
Lazar Markovic
Adama Diomande
Sam Clucas
Abel Hernandez
Sutton's record was 14,000 in this round in 1970 when Leeds won 0-6 and Sniffer scored four times.
It's amateur hour for the Fox boys this morning - they're trying to imitate NBC in trivial ways (e.g., fake Rebecca Lowe) but they can't get the basic - a clean lens, getting to the match on time - right.
That's a decent Hull side . Probably only four changes, so no excuses.
Kate's definitely being rested this morning.
Sylvestri superbly tips over a long range effort from Rory Deacon
Oh - Deacon hit a marvelous strike there but Sivestri was able to parry it over the bar. Not liking this.
Bloody hell - we're really under the cosh here!
The corner out for another. The second one is not dealt with by the Leeds defense and is volleyed over in the six yard box.
We haven't got started yet - no rhythm to our play at all. Not happy.
Sutton recorded one of the biggest giant killings ever in 1989 when they defeated Coventry City, then a op flight side 2-1, who had won the Cup two years earlier.
The commentator apologies for the camera - just get the cameraman a bloody cloth to wipe it off!
If only could invent a lip to stop the water going on the camera
I want to complain about Fox as much as the next guy but this is BT Sport or the BBC's fault
IF United win today that will mean that half of the last sixteen will be from the Prem... wonder what it is normally?
First yellow card given to Cooper for a tug back. Silly. That ball was going through to the keeper.
Fair point, UWS. Fair point.
Liam Cooper has been booked and the free kick leads to a Sutton corner.
There were 11 last year along with the soon to be Hull
I was fixing a hot cuppa, so I don't know if Liam Mini Cooper was booked for speeding or failure to yield the right of way
Following the Aussie Open at all?
Turn Back the Clock time... as JHJ would say
Kate just blew the final whistle at the Cottage and told everyone to bugger off
Home side won 4-1
Leeds and Sutton have met once
When and what was the score
It's over at the Cottage as Bob and Kate let the Tigers have it, thrashing them 4-1. You and Kate must have left them feeding on scraps and crumbs.
The Fourth Round 1970. Leeds won 0-6 in front of a record crowd of 14,000.
What about their giant killing vs Coventry?
Yup...Leeds were champions of the land...went on to make the final
Barca were held 1-1 in Seville by Real Betis.
Sutton manager Paul Doswell is a very superstitious man. Apparently his team travelled by coach from the nearby Holiday Inn, all of 90 seconds away. He also demanded his players had the same coach driver that took them to AFC Wimbledon in the last round. Magical.
Lost to Chelsea in a replay in the final at OT. The wining goal came from a long throw that gave Chelsea their first ever FA Cup win.
How I wish I could turn the clock back to those heady days of the 70s. We're making heavy weather of Sutton United today.
Struth... Leeds so lucky to survive that one!!!
I still blame the pitch at Wembley, which had hosted The Horse of the Year Show the week before.
Silvestri is keeping us in this one - another great save!
OH!!! Sylvestri somehow saves from Gomis from close range . He didn't know much about it , then Stuart Dallas with Leeds first shot of the match saved Ross Worner.
Sutton sound like they're trying to emulate the good old days.
I think both teams blamed the pitch in that final, but no excuses for the OT pitch.
First decent move from us wins a corner.
Kalvin Phillips wins a corner off a move by Coyle and Dallas. The corner is headed out for another.
Cooper heads the next corner straight to keeper, Ross Worner.
Watching the video of the last Sutton Leeds match...the next vid on the list... 'Leeds United Destroy Manchester United 1972"
It is 4-1 at half time!!!
Yellow card now for young Tyler Denton who hacked the winger twice there.
Young Denton is booked for tripping Rory Deacon
I'll have to look at those YouTube clips, UWS - thanks for the tip!
I saw both videos on Youtube so I will not ruin the surprise.
Tyler Denton must be from the under 23 side.
Make that 5-1...actually it was 0-0 at half time
Don't bother watching the second one... horrible stuff
LOL! That's the one I'll start with!
RUUDY NORAH !Bob will be hoping that Sutton's keeper gets injured so that the Fatty 45 year old backup can go in goal.
They're good from a Leeds point of view. Correct about all the goals being scored in the second half. We really were destroyed in the second half and Sir Bobby was off the pace.
Stuart Dallas ha s a shot deflected for a corner. Ross Worner and Simon Dowd fail to communicate and the corner sails out of play.
There's also one on youtube where Leeds gave the Saints and even bigger thrashing than United the same season.
That's how it should be!!
10 out of 11 players that played vs Sutton played in the Final
Free kick to Leeds...thought it was a pen
Oh - that was close to a penalty - right on the edge. We need a bit of good fortune here, as we aren't playing well.
Simon Dowd fouls Tyler Denton inches outside the box. Bob must have been wanting a spot kick. Sutton were caught out.
Barry Davies was going gaga during both matches
Phillips straight to Worner off the free kick.
Phillips whipped in the free kick but keeper Worner was behind it well.
I love a bit of Barry Davies high-pitched commentary. He was one of the best!
Leeds have some big uns on the bench?
horrible pass by Leeds... great save again from the Leeds stopper
Bloody hell - Silvestri has to stop a drive from Deacon after Douks coughs up the ball in a dangerous area.
I want changes at half-time - this is not good enough.
Sylvestri superbly saves another long range effort from Deacon after Douks gifted possession.
What was David Coleman's signature call?
Gomis was offside from a through ball. A minute of stoppage time.
It's 0-0 at the end of a first half that Leeds somehow survived.
Half tme
Shadow is at me for a walk
I may have to miss some of the second half
Steve Morison, who scored for the Evil Lions is a former LUFC player. Is that correct?
The second half is underway from London SW.
MOT!
We're back on at Gander Green Lane - Sutton get us underway. No changes as of yet. Grrr!
Cheers, mate - we need your mojo.
why does the pitch look so strange. is it plastic?
Sutton United defeated Coventry in the Third Round in 1989. What was the result in their Fourth Round match that year
I am off for walkies but I have Talksport commentary
They just announced the United side
9 changes but still a good side
Romero
Fellaini, Shweinny in midfield
Miki, Roon and Martial on in the side
I am off
Billy Whitehouse has a shot deflected for a corner and Doukarra is called for a push off the corner from Dallas.
It is Steve
Again, what was David Coleman's signature call
I am really off for walkies for real
Good morning Gooner. Yes, it is a plastic pitch unlike the last meeting between these teams in 1970.
BUGGGGERRRRR!
Sutton have a penalty!
Struth, as I am going out the door... Penalty for Sutton!!
BLOODY HELL!!! PENALTY SUTTON. FIRST HORRIBLE KEEPING FROM SYLVESTRUI THEN A MISTIMED TACKLE.
Bugger...sorry mate
I am really leaving now
Collins scores and we're 1-0 behind. Grrrr!
GOAL !!! JAMIE COLLINS SCORES WITH A WELL PLACED PENALTY, SENDING SYLVESTRI THE WRONG WAY
Sorry, Bob. Leeds will need to roll up their sleeves to get back into this one.
Time for changes, Gary. Pull your finger out!
I don't know if you'r e thinking of this one but I always liked the one about if the ball had gone in, it would have been a goal. RIP David Coleman. I can't separate him from those Wednesday night evening European matches when he had to shout over those German air-horns.
Sacko on for Dallas now - not exactly the change that I was hoping for. But - come on, you Whites!
The goal came out of nothing. Bailey tackled Doukarra, then his long clearance lead to a collission between Sylvestri and Lewie Coyle, who was called for a trip in the box off the loose ball and a penalty was awarded.
Morning, Gooner! Glad to have you around for this one.
Sacko on for Dallas.
More than half an hour to play - plenty of time to turn this one around.
Howdy boys.
Hopeless.
I remember David Coleman, but not as well as John Motson, Barry Davies, Brian Moore , and Gerry Harrison.
Sutton United is the lowest ranked team left in the competition. No pressure. Just saying.
Bailey high and wide with a long range effort.
Coleman had the European cup matches in the 70's on Wednesday nights. What was the quote you were thinking about?
Sutton have never made it to the Fifth Round. Lost 0-6 to Leeds in 1970, Defeated Coventry in the Third Round in 1989 then lost 8-0 at CR in the Fourth Round. Will they make it to the Fifth Round for the first time or will Leeds comeback?
I agree - we've only had one chance all match. Shocking.
I always listened to those on the radio.I think that may have been a different announcer.
Wilks, another academy player, on for Doukarra. Bob will not be pleased.
Now it's Doukara off and Alex Wilkes, another Academy prospect on. So Gary has taken off the only two regular starters and put reserves on instead. Does he even care about this?
Yeah, post Heysel the ban on English clubs meant less tv coverage
For some reason Alan Pardew is in the ground today.
These are weird changes, indicative of a coach that smells promotion and would be shot of this competition less it distract. Uh-oh. Pardew.
Alan Pardew, looking bored. He was in the Final last year. Now on gardening leave
A loose backpass nearly lets May in there - Silvestri has to clear. (sigh)....
Sylvestri had to rush out and clear to prevent Sutton going two up.
Apparently Wilkes' brother was shot dead in Leeds three days ago. So that's excellent preparation for this match, eh?
Agreed. Sounds like Monk isn't taking this seriously, but losing to a non league team is really embarrassing.
Agreed, Gooner - Monk clearly doesn't want these matches cluttering up the league schedule. Poor show from him.
Agreed. Why include him in the squad and considering Monk is supposedly a detailed man. So much for that.
Alright - that's a bit better. Kemar Roofe would've been my first change. He's getting stripped off now.
Kemar Roofe getting ready for action. Bob will like that
Roofe scored twice for Oxford against Garry Monk's Swans in the Third Round last year. Interesting!
Twenty minutes to go - Whitehouse departs and Roofe comes on.
Roofe is on for Whitehouse, who had a quiet debut.
That change should have been made ten minutes ago.
Sutton win a corner off a long clearance.
Leeds eventually clear the corner.
Bailey booked for a poor foul on Roofe.
Sloppy foul by Sutton there gives us a chance to swing one in now.
Spence fouls Lewie Coyle,
What a waste!
A poor free kick straight into the wall.
How is Matty Grimes still on the pitch?!
A long range effort from Grimes is easily gathered by Ross Worner.
I think Leeds have made all their changes or is there one remaining?
Peter Lorimer will not be impressed by this performance.
No - we've made all of our changes now.
Rory Deacon straight to Sylvestri
MOT!!! COME ON YOU WHITES!
I am back... as Leeds go down to ten men!!!!
It's gone from bad to worse - Liam Cooper has got himself sent off, silly boy. We're down to ten men.
BLOODY HELL!!!! It goes from bad to worse as Liam Cooper is off for a second yellow. Needless foul on Eastman.
Now a goal down and a man down.
Bugger! Your captain just dismissed. And he goes without giving the 4th official a shove. Low energy.
Offside raised as Eastman volleyed and Sylvestri punched away under his bar.
Leeds have been hopeless... Lincoln were 72 places behind Brighton. Sutton are 80+ places behind
Biggest shock of the weekend?
It's been that type of performance today
BTW, David Coleman used to say the score when the ball went in the night
ONE NIL
TWO ONE!
Welcome back, UWS> Agreed. Sutton is the lowest ranked team left in the competition. Really embarrassing.
just remember that Leeds scored late on at the Abbey Stadium
He sure cut the mustard. Had lots of muster!
I sure hope so. Not much time remaining.
Is the bloke that got sent off a regular starter?
Poor foul by Lewie Coyle.
Yes. Liam Mini Cooper does start some matches.
Coyle could have been the second dismissal there.
The 4,000 or so away supporters deserve better. Gary should apologize after the match, regardless of the result.
He drove into a cul de sac and totaled his vehicle.
Agreed, Bob. Absolutely.
Leeds refuse to go forward!
Monk has muffed his lines today
There is no reason to put out so many changes
Have a spine that has been playing well
STUPID!!
Liam Cooper used to be a regular last season and skippered the side on occasion. This year it's been Jansson and Bartley as the regular center back pairing. Cooper hasn't featured.
We don't even look like we're trying to score - no pressure at all.
Bob, is the guy sent off a regular?
Antonsson with a really wasteful effort.
Four minutes of stoppage time to come now.
such a pathetic effort there
As Gerry Harrison would say... high, wide and horrible
Hopeless long range effort. Lee Mason signals four minutes of stoppage time.
4 added minutes
No - just answered that question, UWS.
The only regulars in the starting side today were Doukara and Dallas. And they were the first two pulled off. Gary doesn't care about this one.
This commentator sound like Tony Gubba... it's not him because Gubba died a few years ago
cheers
C'mon, Lee Mason the 4th official. Give him a push. He deserves it.
No urgency at all!!!!
Will our United win... our 8 home games against Wigan.. United have won all 8 and outscored Athletic 28-1
Such a STUPID foul!!!!!!
Late yellow for Sacko who has done nought.
sorry mate.. this must be very annoying for you
I am pissed and I am not a Leeds fan
Nice one, Gooner - I would.
Efan deserves a shove as well.
Not a happy chappy, mate. Thanks.
I hope that form carries on today for Man Yoo.
Right there... typical modern day footballer...just kicks the ball out for a throw in.... YOU NEED A GOAL!!
stil phaffing about with it
One last chance!
STILL NO URGENCY!!!!!
that's it... so sorry Bob... here's to the PREMIER LEAGUE!!!
It's over and Sutton upset Leeds 1-0 . Sorry Bob.
