Who's Up for the Cup?
Who's up for the Cup, lads? Certainly you can count me in. While the 3rd Round is my absolute favorite weekend of the season, the 4th Round comes close. There are still loads of tasty fixtures at this stage - and this weekend is no different. We start with Liverpool hosting Championship contenders Wolves. Then there are the 10am EST kickoffs including Spurs v. Wycombe. And we end up with the all-Premiership match-up of Soton v. Arsenal. Join me for the Cup action this morning, won't you?
544 Comments:
Poor form from Fox Sports 1, as usual. They appear to be showing a World Cup 2018 magazine show right up until kick-off time at 7:30am EST. So no build up to the match at Anfield. Boo!
The teams coming out of the legendary tunnel at Anfield now:
Liverpool: Karius, Randall, Gomez, Klavan, Moreno, Ejaria, Lucas, Wijnaldum, Firmino, Origi, Woodburn. Subs: Milner, Coutinho, Sturridge, Mignolet, Can, Stewart, Wilson.
Wolverhampton: Burgoyne, Coady, Stearman, Hause, Doherty, Edwards, Evans, Helder Costa, Saville, Weimann, Dicko. Subs: White, Batth, Mason, Lonergan, Bodvarsson, Enobakhare, Ronan.
Referee: Craig Pawson.
And we're away from Anfield...
GOAL! Oh my! Liverpool leaky defense cracks in the opening moments! Stearman nips in and nods home - free header!
Wolves are 0-1 up!~
Wolves are really putting the frighteners on the Pool defense. They've got another free kick now.
Dougherty takes and it's straight into the wall. the ball comes back in and Dicko misses a golden opportunity from about six yards out.
Morning Bob
Missed the goal
I did see their second chance...so many not marked inside the box
Jurgen Klopp will know that he's in a dogfight now.
Morning, UWS - great to have you on board this morning. Suspicion of offside on the goal - I'll be interested to see your opinion on it.
Im loving it... Liverpool struggling
STRUTH... WOLVES ALMOST GET ANOTHER!
Great run
Oh - Costa nearly scored after a wonderful solo run. He stumbled just at the crucial moment. But another big chance!
Just saw the replay... I don't really like the shoulder making you offside..that's level in my book
It makes me feel good that on Sunday there is your United followed by mine
Liverpool's passing is finally starting to click. Origi nearly gets through after a nifty exchange of passes.
That was my feeling, too. I thought Wolves deserved the good fortune because of their positive approach.
I can't wait for tomorrow's matches - should be magic!
What are thoughts about Snodgrass?
Hull really improving under their new manager and they sell their best player?
Shouldn't surviving the drop be more important and valuable than getting 10 mil of the Hammer's cash?
A long spell of Liverpool pressure. They’ve totally dominated possession these last four or five minutes, but are yet to craft a chance.
Snoddy was a key player for the Tigers. I expect them be relegated now. They've indicated no ambition at all by selling him.
Treatment time now for one of the Wolves players.
Hope the guy is okay
Just slipped trying to get a cross over
The surface is not as good as you would expect at Anfield.
More sloppy passing allows Wolves to attack again. They look a potent threat on the break.
Streaming yanks Wijnaldum back and picks up the match's first yellow card.
Did you see Bent's classic OG yesterday?
Classic
Fox seems to be up to their old tricks today. It's clear that the commentators aren't at the match - the commentary seems remote as a consequence.
And the crowd noise volume has definitely been turned down.
No - I've got to check that out. Derby nearly scored a real upset!
Have you seen the Doukara volley from the match against Forest the other day? Right out of the top drawer.
Here the vid from LUFC TV with highly partisan commentary:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UaFnHd23bv0
Liverpool have had 80% of possession so far. And they have done almost precisely naff all with it. I know that you hate that statistic.
Liverpool have had three shots, none on target. Wolves have had four shots, one on target, and their inexperienced 20-year-old goalkeeper is having the time of his life.
YES!!!!!!!!!!!!
TWO NIL!!!
RIPPED APART!!
Wolves are 0-2 up! Wow! Weimann straight through the middle and rounding Karius.
GOAL !!!! WOLVES GO TWO UP AT ANFIELD. ANDY WEIMANN WITH THE GOAL.
POSSESSION MEANS NOTHING!!!
BLOODY MODERN DAY FOOTBALL STATS
I think Reading had more possession than United in the last round
United won 4-0
Paul Lambert will be cock-a-hoop as he heads into the dressing room in a few minutes - what a great time to score!
Good morning lads I got a wee bit of extra kip.
Welcome, MUR - you've joined us at a vital time. Hope you're up for the Cup!
Wijnaldum goes down in the box bu the referee is not impressed. Went down too easily there.
Morning MUR... maybe you should go back to bed..I'm loving how this game is going!!
Liverpool are really struggling in 2017
Couldn't beat Plymouth at home
Lost to Swansea at home
Losing 2-0 to Wolves at home
KEEP IT GOING
Will the fans boo at half time
Liver pool were shredded apart as they were playing their predictable, boring , short , passing game. A slip off a short pass, a long Wolves clearance and Costa finds himself going on a break. He found Weimann all along up front, who rounded Karius and easily scored.
Into two minutes of stoppage time.
forgot the losing to Southampton at home as well!!
Wolves fans singing about going to Wemberlee
Thanks lads. I was thinking of staying in bed on a cool, dreary morning, but the second goal was scored after I fed Fred, so you might want me up.
When Wolves get the ball, they go forward with pace..what a novel idea
There are indeed some boos ringing the ground as Liverpool troop off 0-2 down.
Wolves are shockingly two up at the half at Anfield.
Liverpool need a goal, they pass it around in midfield!!
There goes the whistle
LOVELY JUBBLEY
Reading take on Cardiff today...come on CITY
Pool host Chelsea on Tuesday !! Are Liverpool one of the ones to miss out of the top four? Love it for Pool and City to be outside looking in!
Lots of matches the same night as the transfer window closing.
Tomorrow's clash at OT is a clash of two of the last three winners of the Cup!
Wigan 2013
United 2015
Arsenal won in 14 and 15
Kate Abdo seems to be a much needed addition to the FOX crew. She starts with a great pun , stating POOL were rubbish, no sorry I meant sluggish, then Lexi says Costa parted the Red Sea. Decent by FOX for once.
Phillipe Coutinho is coming on for the second as we get set to start again at Anfield.
The second half is underway from Anfield.
Coutinho on for Connor Randall. Liverpool punished for not taking the Cup seriously despite fixture congestion.
Liverpool had 79% possession with no shots on target and a Wolves goal off a Pool possession. It means naught.
Better from Pool as Doogie Hausse is booked for a rugby tackle on Origi then Klaven diverts a header from Coutinho's free kick just wide.
Pool two down at home as they were vs the swans last week. Will they lose this as well?
Wijnaldum fouls the dangerous Costa on a break similar to the one that led to the second goal. He's deservedly booked or should have been
Wijnaldum picks up a yellow for hauling back the danger man Costa.
The fee kick is straight into the wall.
A stat that UWS will love. Pool set to lose three in a row at Anfield, being out scored 6-2 in the process.
A decent Pool break, but a poor pass from Origi was behind Moreno, who was in a great position.
Great stat.... Chelsea to come next
Three things I that annoyed me about Thursday's match
United played like crap
United lost
United wore white!!! United don't do that! They wear red whenever they can...don't just change for change
Wolves erecting a gold and black wall now. Should they be working for Trump?
Pool then host the Gunners. They may be done in by the end of next weekend.
Klopp looks absolutely livid!
Wolves need to keep playing like they did in the first half....why change what is working
BOOM BOOM! Sorry, he has the codes to the nukes, but good one, mate. Charge them a tariff!
Wolves started the season with Walter Zenga as manager, being replaced by Paul Lambert around Thanksgiving.
The last few minutes have been a shot-blockathon, with Origi, Ejaria and Firmino all having efforts repelled. Burgoyne still hasn’t had a save to make.
Cometh the hour, cometh Pool's first shot on target. A long range effort from Coutinho straight to the keeper.
Liverpool will have to pay a 20% tariff in order to enter the penalty box.
Boom boom!
How can a team at home vs a lower league team get their first shot on goal in the 60th minute... almost a backpass
Bloody modern day football
Burgoyne got away with one as Coutinho put through Moreno, who rounded the young keeper, but overran the ball out of play.
But still no further changes. Surely Sturridge will get a run out.
Pool have been out scored 2-0 at Anfield by lower league opposition in the CUP and have yet to score from open play in the CUP vs lower league opposition.
BOOM BOOM, mate.
I watched the East Midlands Derby yesterday evening along with Desmond . The Foxes were the better team , but have a replay at the KP.
And here comes Sturridge, replacing Roberto FIrmino. Why take a striker off?
Sturridge on for Firmino. The striker has been pathetic the past few matches.
I guess he's resting him for the matches vs Chelsea and the Gunners that are coming up. That could be five consecutive home losses for Pool.
I don't understand modern football managers. You need two goals, at a minimum. Why not have three strikers on?
Costa comes off now and Ronan comes on.
A player from the Wolves Academy as the dangerous Costa gets a standing ovation and is replaced by eighteen year old Connor Ronan, the young Irish player.
Agreed, Bob. Modern footie can be really frustrating.
Really really don't want Liverpool to get a sniff here...Keep em out Wolves
Since United made the EFL Cup Final, the Manc Derby will need to be rescheduled. The Gunners will have that weekend off as well.
Nothing has happened this half. but I bet you there will be lots of added time....because a big un is behind
If Pool ose at home to Chelsea and the Gunners that will be five losses in a row at Anfield. When did that last happen?
Bodvarsson, who was part of the Iceland team in the Euros, is on for Dicko.
I thought more had chosen Liverpool to win the Cup, but it's only Swansong who will lose out with this result, if it holds up.
Ref isn't looking for a chance to get Pool back into it
Never a pen
Woodburn goes down, looking for a penalty. He should have been booked for diving. What are they teaching at the Pool Academy?
A second Wolves substitution, Bodvarsson replacing Dicko. Paul Lambert is bunkering in now.
Costa lived up to his name as he went Coast to Coast on the second goal.
Now Klopp is throwing on defensive middle Emre Can. What's the point of that?
Sturridge tries a pop but Burgoyne is well behind it.
The final roll of the dice from Klopp. Can Pool pull some goals back as Ejaria was jarred by the Wolves defense.
Easy for Burgoyne.
Coutinho high and wide from long range.
The final roll of the dice from Paul Lambert as Joe Mason is on for Andy Weimann.
14 plus... many added to go
COME ON
Doherty tackles Woodburn for a Pool corner.
Connor Roan failed to pick out Saville Row on a Wolves break off a horrible corner from Woodburn.
Cant stand all the squad rotation
Player prefer playing than training!
Wolves blow a 4 on 1 break there!
Down to just a little over ten minutes for Liverpool to get back into this one. They haven't really threatened yet.
Bodvarsson wins a corner off of Joe Gomez ona Wolves break.
ooh, almost three
linesman's flag didn't go up
The corner from Ronan is headed away then Karius is forced to save from close range.
If Liverpool score, they'll score again
Wolves will wobble
Three home defeats in a week...LOVELY JUBBLEY in'it
Origi with a long range effort straight at Burogyne, who has yet to be forced to make a difficult save.,
please read that last post in a cockney accent
I could be five in a fortnight, which would be even better.
That is a great read.
Joe Gomez more like Gomez Addams with that long range effort.
Rangers one up at Motherwell late in the match.
Woodburn wins a corner off of Doherty.
GOAL! Liverpool get one back. It's scrappy from Origi. But it will give them hope that they can dig this one out.
wide man doesn't beat the first man
Corner...bugger.... Liverpool score!! Defender headed out of his keepers hands
Here they come
Four minutes and stoppage time now for Liverpool to usher in Desmond at Anfield.
GOAL !!! ORIGI PULLS ONE BACK FOR POOL WITH A FAR POST VOLLEY AS WOLVES FAILED TO HEAD AWAY THE CORNER , THEN STURRIDGE HEADED ON FOR ORIGI TO HEAD HOME FROM A YARD OUT.
great save!!
Pool could win it!
I HATE IT
Oh - Origi again. Somehow Burgoyne scrambled it away.
Wolves need to break but they are all sitting back
just asking for another goal
Origi nearly scores off another corner that the Wolves defense failed to clear yet again . Burgoyne with his first difficult save of the match
Again, no reason for a lot of added time
Why do teams do this!!
ooh, great job by Wolves....almost a one man goal
Bodvarsson goes on a solo break off a desperate clearance from Joe Mason and Lucas superbly blocks his shot.
4 added minutes
Too much but not too bad
Four minutes of stoppage time./
About what I was expecting.
Dave Edwards with stupid foul on Moreno.
Straight into the wall
Useless
Liverpool have a free kick now. Coutinho over it - into the wall. Trump would be pleased.
90 secs
Coutinho straight into the wall without paying a tariff.
Have you noticed the tendency toward footballers holding up their hands to block what they're saying from the cameras. I think it's really silly. You?
Free kick for Wolves... don't stay down
Ref will add more time
Wolves fans starting to celebrate now.
Well done... won a corner
30 secs
Bodvarsson wins a late Wolves corner.
And that's it! Wolves have won at Anfield - a marvelous day for them!
Wolves set for the Final then? Beaten Wolves in the Cup and they make the final
IT IS OVER!!!
FANTASTIC!!!!!!
Origi fouls Stearman and it's over as Wolves with a famous 1-2 victory at Anfield. WOW!
Of course Fox don't stay for the sounds at the stadium... right back to the studio guys!
Why don't they learn from NBC
I'm off for walkies in falling snowflakes...not a lot but still falling
I'll be back
Back for the West London Derby as Prem leaders, Chelsea, host the visiting Bees.
Here are the line-ups for the Chelski v. Brentford match on FS1:
Chelsea: Begovic, Azpilicueta, Terry, Zouma, Loftus-Cheek, Chalobah, Fabregas, Ake, Pedro, Batshuayi, Willian.
Subs: Ivanovic, Hazard, Moses, Costa, Matic, Eduardo, Kenedy.
Brentford: Bentley, Dean, Egan, Barbet, Colin, McEachran, Yennaris, Woods, Bjelland, Sawyers, Vibe.
Subs: Hogan, Hofmann, Bonham, Kerschbaumer, Clarke, Jota, Field.
Referee: Michael Oliver (Northumberland)
They're off from SB
And we're away at Stamford Bridge.
I am curious to see how Conference leaders, Abe Lincoln, who eliminated the Tractor Boys with a last minute winner in a replay, get on as they host the Seagulls, doing well in the Championship.
Begovic playing his last match for Chelsea? He may join the Cherries.
Killie take a first minute lead vs Ross County
Tony Pulis must be on scouting duty as he's in attendance at SB.
Pulls would be lucky to get any players off Chelski.
Pedro with a long range effort about three fourths of the way back to peter Griffin Park.
Many Premier League and Championship sides are fielding below strength teams in their cup matches. Chelsea make nine changes, as do Spurs. Burnley make eight changes and there are plenty of reserves in the Brighton side facing Lincoln City too. How will they fare? We’ll soon find out.
I wonder if they're one of his future opponents.
Zouma heads out for a Bees corner.
Harley Dean heads well wide off the corner from Josh McEachran, the former Chelsea Academy player, who will be keen to show the Blues what they shipped off.
willian goes on a solo run and has a pass cleared for a corner. Fab takes it short to Willian and Chelsea win a free kick. Pedro was fouled just outside the box.
Chelski have a free kick chance here with Willian over it.
GOAL! Sumptuous delivery straight into the back of the net!
GOAL !!! WILLIAN BENDS IN THE FREE KICK AS CHELSEA HAVE AN EARLY LEAD.BENTLEY SAW THE FREE KICK DRIVEN IN LIKE A LUXURY CAR.
Bentley made the wrong decision. Given the angle, I would have cheated to the left, as that was always the more likely side for Willian to stick it in. He left himself with far too much to do.
Seven goals for Willian already and he hasn't really been a regular in the side. Cor!
Blackburn take the lead vs Blackpool in the black derby.
A great return for so little playing time . The stuff champions are made of.
Forest Green take the lead at Barrow as they aim to decrease Abe Lincoln's lead at the top as the leaders are hosting the Seagulls in the Cup today
Championship news of interest to Bob:
The Canaries take the lead vs the Brummies
The Tractor Boys take the lead at Ridsdale's house
Richard Burton move out of the drop zone , taking the lead at Loftus Road. Wigan , United's opponents tomorrow, replace them
Gareth Southgate on duty as well, I guess scouting Bees players,
JT with a rare long range effort that goes well wide off a short corner.
GOAL !!! PEDRO PUTS CHELSEA TWO UP.
Chelski go two-nil up and this one is just about over. Conte risked with nine changes and it's paying off. They are rampant.
I'm back as Chelsea double their lead
My SS link is on bloody horse racing but my radio app with Talksport is going around the grounds. BBC is blacked out
Pedro showed that he's more than a luxury player as he drove that sot past Bentley. After some back and forth off the Bees goal Kick , Willian found a loose ball in midfield and passed to Batshuyai, played a through ball that Loftus-Cheek let run to Pedro, who scored.
What doesn't help is that there are Prem matches just days after the Cup matches.
Welcome back, UWS. I hope you are nice and warm at your house.
The Black derby is being played in front of a very sparse Ewood Park with both sides' supporters protesting their owners.
Play had to be stopped for a bit because the fans outside the stadium threw tennis balls on to the field
Burn beating Pool 2-0
Wycombe take the lead at WHL!!!
Gola at Sincel Bank
Lincoln 0 Brighton 1
Wycombe Wanderers take a shock lead at SFL on the match being shown on FS Plus.
I think Fox have chosen the wrong match again!
This was always going to be a home banker... I know Bradford won here two years ago but...
Blackburn are 2-0 up over Blackpool in the battle of the Blacks. We're scheduled to play Blackburn next after our Cup exploit tomorrow.
BUGGER!!!! Claude Puel says he will play the youngsters for the Saints vs the Gunners
Agreed, UWS. I would have chosen Spurs v. Wycombe. This one is a training exercise for the Blues.
Oh - nearly a third!
OH!!! Bentley just kept out a shot from Batshuyai off a corner that nearly crossed the line.
I HATE IT!!!
Why don't teams want to win the Cup!!!
Drives me crazy
Is in the foreign managers that have changed the mindset? English managers do it too but because it is the thing to do!
No goal-line technology in the FA Cup yet. But that was the right decision. Didn't cross the line.
The match from SFL is being shown on FS Plus, but I would have rather watched that.
I really thought Southampton had a chance today after already making a Cup Final
There isn't goal line technology? They said there was in the League Cup
It was used with that Forster save at Anfield
Good news for Abe Lincoln as second placed Trannie trail at home to the Daggers
