Russia 2018 Day 15!.... Part 1
So, we are almost done with the group stages. FIFA have stopped following the alphabet for the last two days. Group F went before Group E and today Group H goes before Group G. This thread is concentrating on Group H. One of the favorites for the group, Poland, have already got their tickets set and are just waiting for the 24 hr point to check in. The rest of the group is wide open. Japan are on top as they take on the soon to be Poles. The second match could be interesting. Both teams can go thru but Senegal have their noses in front. One of the two that come out of the group of course take on England.... Who will England have?

COLOMBIA: Ospina, Arias, Mina, Mojica, Davidson Sanchez, Carlos Sanchez, James, Cuadrado, Uribe, Quintero, Falcao
As for the other match
Japan vs Poland
Japan have made SIX changes to their starting line up!! Why would they do that!!
Kagawa, Shoji, Inui, Haraguchi, Hasebe and Osako all drop to the bench!
In their place comes Makino, Okazaki, Usami, Yamaguchi, Muto and Gotoku Sakai. It's a bizarre move from the manager with Japan requiring a point to advance.
Japan
Kawashima, G Sakai, H Sakai, Yoshida, Makino, Nagatomo, Muto, Yamaguchi, Shibasaki, Usami, Okazaki
Poland
Fabianski,Berexzynki, Glik,Bednarek, Jerdrzejczyk, Krychowiak, Goralski, Goralski, Zielinski, Kurzawa, Lewandowski
They're Coming Home, They're Coming Home, They're Coming
Germany coming Home.
Sorry...had to have a little dig at the Germans
BBC have the early matches today so Martin O'Neil has walked across Red Square from ITV's studio to Fox's
Permutations
Japan need only a draw to advance
Japan can lose and still go thru with a a Senegal win
Senegal and Colombia... winner thru
Senegal need a draw to advance
A draw will be ok for Colombia if Japan lose
A lot of people are scared of England taking on Colombia... should we just have them out then?
BBC about to start their pre-game
Morning, UWS - thanks for getting us going this morning. I'm marooned at work this morning, but wearing the lucky England shirt. I'll be following the Group H matches on the Guardian blog and then whizzing home for lunch at the England match later.
I'm not scared of any of these sides. England at their best should be able to beat any of the four.
The Guardian is reporting that Jamie Vardy will be starting in place of Harry Kane, who will be on the bench. Rational move in my view. Your thoughts?
Morning MUR
I am actually wearing one of my England shirts today because the score doesn't really matter
Good morning, Bob and Dave. Great post. I will be bringing my retro England short on the trip. Too hot to wear it today
Morning, MUR - how are you feeling today?
Felling pretty good. Didn't sleep much, yet feel well rested. How are you?
Morning BD...sure MUR is here soon
I called it... Hiya David
Bloody Freezing here!
Japan vs Poland is from Volgograd and what is probably the main match, Colombia vs Senegal from Samara.
Good morning, Dave. Please send some of that cool air to us. By 8:15 it's too hot to do any outdoor activities
I have the second match on the BBC
This afternoon, I will have the England match on ITV as well as the TV
Flappy starting in goal for Poland today. Their third choice keeper is the lone Tractor Boy at the World Cup
I have the second match on the BBC
This afternoon, I will have the England match on ITV as well as the TV
I have both matches on the telly.
Their off from Volgograd.
We are off at both games
Then from Samara about 45 seconds later even though their local time is an hour ahead of the other match
Early Polish corner,
Lots of moths in Samara.
Only Senegal wearing their change strip?
Poland dominating early vs Japan. Why didn't they play like this the first two matches?
Yesterday was the 8th anniversary of Lampard's non goal against the Germans....payback!!
Definitely so. VAR would have helped in that match
Useless free kick by Senegal
Senegal free kick. Ospina does well to catch the free kick in traffic.
Germany given a taste of their own medicine.Usually win matches late, but lost due to conceding twice in stoppage time
Falcao wins a free kick by being rammed into about 25 yards from goal
Okazaki heads a near post cross wide
Free kick for Colombia..well saved
The free kick from Quintero pushed around the post.
Flappy saved a near post shot
Sibaly fouls Cuadrado, presumably to get treatment for the injured Senegal player
PENALTY SENEGAL . SEEMED AN EASY CALL. MANE TRIPPED BY DAVINSON SANCHEZ
PENALTY!!! Mane is brought down!!
Wish he got a shot off
He got the ball... I think it will be called back!!
No penalty
Not sure what's taking so long . He was definitely tripped. It was obvious
Why didn't he shoot!!!
Why? He was definitely tripped. Dr. Joe said he got the ball first. He sure seemed to miss it
The ref sure must have a some strong coffee this morning
He got the ball
I thought he got the ball
Senegal have a free kick 35 yards from goal. Poland have a corner
I thought he got the ball
another pathetic free kick
Niang straight to Ospina while Kawazaki saves a header, but the Poles were called for a foul
Perhaps he did.. The camera angles have been atrocious this tournament
Just checking in on the matches. Sounds like Colombia got out of jail there. Japan and Senegal still in pole position in this group with 4 points each.
More atrocious crossing by Senegal
Sunitero clipped, but makes a meal of it and the Senegal defender is not impressed. Ref calms him down
Falcao with a free header off target off the free kick from Quintero
Falcao goes close but it was well offside anyway
Lawro is very disappointed in Poland's performance today
Japan wins a corner off of a cross.
Poland have been disappointing the entire tournament. Not any worse today than the first two matches
They're playing with a lack of urgency as if ready to head home. He might be hinting at that
Sub warming up for Colmbia
Mane wins a free kick about 25 yards out
James is coming off!!
James is out. That substantially weakens this Colombia team.
James Rodriguez off injured. Goes down the tunnel and replaced by Luis Muriel
Great save by the Japanese keeper... goal-line technology shows it was half way over
OH! Grosicki of the Tigers , has a header tipped on to the post then it's cleared for a corner. Better from Poland. Long range effort off the corner lands in Row G
Though Colombia has the possession, they are not crating chances. Senegal is not dangerous per se, but they have had their moments.
Flappy held on to a cross that was a tad tricky
Morning, Red Devil - how are things?
Good afternoon, RD. Great to have you on board today
Mane brought down from behind. Should have been a booking
Can Senegal do something with this free kick
No....hopeless
So bad..it looked like it had to be deflected!
Grosicki with a corner headed out then well over by Kurzawa.
Okozaki chests down a pass that is cleared for a corner.
Flappy easily catches the corner.
Japan wins another corner.
Corner easily cleared.
As it stands, Japan and Senegal have identical records AND they drew against each other
Hallmark are investigating
WOW !!! It's 97 in Volgograd. Reached 110 there yesterday. Definitely the hottest temperature of the tournament
I think Hallmark has named Japan group winners. I think heard the announcers stating that. Not sure.
Senegal have been wasteful going forward
A minute of stoppage time from Volgograd
A trio in Samara. Johan Mujica booked for Colombia
It's 0-0 at the half between Japan and Poland
We'd take either in Japan or Senegal, right? Any preferences? I'd say Japan.
Surely James won't be available for the Round of 16 after coming off on a must win match
Me too.. right now... second place even better
Half time
Also 0-0 at the half between Senegal and Poland. The Group yet to be decided.
Game has really flattened out. Colombia is not getting much together. In a game that is this fractured, Senegal would seem to have the better cards.
England would want to avoid Colombia . Japan and Senegal about the same, just different playing styles.
I think Japan's lack of height is a big plus for England to play against.
Senegal does not have much going for it, but neither did Tunisia, so I think they could give England more problems.
In either case, neither should trouble the 3 Lions.
Senegal may be tad tougher for England because they seem a little more dangerous in attack then Japan
Teams coming out of the tunnel at Volgograd. Polish players seem none too interested as if ready to head home.
Rooney joins UNITED
Second half underway from Volgograd.
Then from Samara
Away we go
LOL! Difficult to keep him away from United
None of these three scare me
Japan to make a substitution. Osako on for Okazaki. Was it due to injury?
Okazaki has to be replaced inside 90 seconds of the restart
If Poland score, then both the other two go thru
Watching Colombia requires drinking some coffee to stay awake!
Correct, UWS. I did not think about that. Would the other two play for a 0-0 draw if that happens?
Not sure the Hallmark situation... players on Japan have to worry about stupid yellows!
Niang booked for a high boot on Yerry Mina as they now have an additional card
Japan started with fewer yellows and not even more so.
Poland break. Kawashima rushes out to gather the cross before a shot could be taken,
Just looked up stats from FIFA
Before today
Colombia 2 yellow 1 Red
Senegal 5 yellows
Japan 3 yellows
BTW
Belgium 3 yellows
England 2 yellows
Now Senegal has a player down. Looks like Niang. No it's Ismala. Okay to continue
Again - if I had to work today, I'm glad that I chose this group to miss out on. Sounds as if both matches have been dross.
Colombia and Japan now level on yellows, but Colombia has that one red card. Advantage Japan
Today
Colombia 1 yellow.. 3 yellow 1 red total
Senegal 1 yellow...6 total
Japan no extra...3 total
Glik blocks for a Japan corner.
Still nil nil in both.. could England do the same today
Head tennis off the Japan corner the headed wide from close range.
I'm thinking that could be likely.
GOAL BEDNAREK, OF THE SAINTS VOLLEYS IN A GREAT FREE KICK TO GIVE POLAND THE LEAD.
POLAND HAVE SCORED!!
The Colombian fans go nuts
Forget the Hallamrk cards. As things stand , Senegal through as winners and Colombia as runners up.
Colombia and Senegal to "help" each other?
If Poland score another... I bet both teams in the other match will just cancel each other out
Niang fouled by Carlos Sanchez. Both teams seem to e going for it
Shame - I would have preferred Japan. I'll take Colombia, too. They're pants.
Atrocious free kick by Mane
Horrible free kick from Mane . He should do better
Carlos Sanchez, the first player sent off this tournament, is a former Villa player
Inui on for osame.
Colombia would bring lots of fans which would be a negative
Colombian chance... blocked
Colmbia wins a corner after two shots were blocked off a free kick
Japan get card... up to 4
Falcao heads well over from the corner
Cards not a factor as Japan needs goals.
Too much faking from the Colmbians
Great tackle by the Senegal keeper. Muriel needs to be stronger.
Japan needs a goal or one from Senegal.
Atrocious cross from Inui
Going into the last game in the groups
A. Top two were already there but switched positions
B. Top two were tied and both went thru
C. Both teams ended the same as they started
D. Top won, Argentina moved from bottom to second
E. Top two stayed as is
F. Top went to second, third won the group
G Top two in
H Top don't qualify?
Or two goals for Japan.
20 minutes to go
Japan only needs one
Japan wins a corner.
Can Japan score late like South Korea?
Yoshida trying to emulate his Saints teammate by scoring off a set piece, but heads well wide from the corner.
Cuadrado has a pass blocked for a corner off a pass from Flacao.
Japan need a goal and they go close-ish from a corner but Lawro points out that they need a goal and only had five in the box for a corner
GOAL !!! COLOMBIA SCORES FROM THE CORNER
GOAL
COLOMBIA TAKE THE LEAD AND ARE ON TOP!!
The man on the post was just leaning on it
15 minutes to go!
Now Japan are back in!!
Colombia in first place, but why is Japan ahead of Senegal?
Senegal with a decent save
Looked like Yerry Mina, the new Barca signing, headed in the corner from Arias . The keeper got a hand to it , but could only push it to the roof of the net,.
Senegal comes to life.
Japan ahead of Senegal on Fair Play
BBC guys are getting it wrong.. they keep saying Japan need a goal... they don't.. they will be ahead of Senegal
Another chance for Senegal saved
Nice save by Ospina from Mane.
BBC guys on the mic still haven't corrected themselves
They even questioned a Japanese guy's phone
Another chance at the back post... missed
Double substiution by Adam Nawalka. Kurzawa off and replaced by Pzeckop
BBC guys... get your fingers out!!
They still think Japan are out.. the studio need to get word to them
Konate on for Balde. No bald power for Senegal today.
ooh almost an OG by Japan.... if they concede again...they are out
Poland nearly score from a corner . Out for another
Japan actually have a better goal difference now
BBC finally figure it out
This group still wide open . Some late drama?
What else could they use beside yellows?
I guess it promotes clean play
Goals in both games again.. still that lone nil niller
as it stand.... England win the group v Japan
Second... Colombia
I think Japan and Senegal ties on goal difference and goals scored. Both losing 1-0
Japan look like the aren't bothered trying to score.. very dangerous if Senegal score
Shame that Japan aren't on top. But England can manage Colombia, particularly without James.
It is on yellows
Japan trying to play clean. Fair play to them for that
What else can they use?
Goals in qualifying?
Shots on target
NOT POSSESSION
Austria v West Germany of 82 happening with Poland and Japan
Japan wise for being patient and not wanting to make too may trips to the Hallmark Store. Patience is a virtue.
Get off the field Old Trafford reject...he can put the arm band on himself
Falcao off and red card player formerly of Villa , now the captain. Replaced by Miguel Borja
4 added minutes for Senegal
Austria and Germany guilty for 80 minutes. Japan and Poland just the last few. That will change if Senegal scores.
3 for Japan
A trio of stoppage time minutes from Samara. A quartet from Volgograd
I guess they knew the rule going in... but strange tiebreaker
Lawro thinks this is embarrassing for FIFA
Japan should want to go out and win the group
It's over in Samara as Poland defeat Japan 1-0. Senegal needs a goal.
Ends 1-0 to Poland
Players all standing around before the final whistle
I guess they didn't want to risk conceding that second goal and being eliminated
That's it!!
Colombia win the group
Japan come second.... on yellows
Over in Volgograd as Colombia defeat Senegal 1-0. The Coffee Makers win the group and Japan through on Fair Play.
Great chatting. Will be back for the England match
Neither team scares me at all
I'll be back for the BIG ONE
TTFN
See you chaps then!
