Back Home with the Prem
I enjoyed my time in Austin, but it's a pleasure to be back in my easy chair for a Saturday morning of the good stuff. We start in a few minutes with the early one from St James' Park with Newcastle hosting Man City. That's followed by the usual 3pm GMT kickoffs, including Spurs v. Bournemouth on NBC Sports, Liverpool v. Brighton on the Gold and Leeds v. Boro in my heart. Later on, we've got Soton v. Watford on the box. Join me for all the fun this morning from the vantage point of your favorite easy chair, won't you?

Good Morning, Bob . Here to join you for the Saturday matches.
Morning, chaps! You’d expect the reigning treble champions to swat aside a team for whom mid-table safety is the long and short of it. But you never know in football. Newcastle’s form has been decent enough since being spanked 5-0 at Leicester: wins over Manchester United, West Ham and Bournemouth, plus a close defeat at Chelsea.
Hiya, MUR - great to have you on board. Hope you've had a good Thanksgiving!
The line-ups at kick-off:
Newcastle United: Dubravka, Manquillo, Fernandez, Clark, Dummett, Willems, Almiron, Shelvey, Hayden, Saint-Maximin, Joelinton.
Subs: Schar, Gayle, Krafth, Darlow, Atsu, Sean Longstaff, Matthew Longstaff.
Manchester City: Ederson, Walker, Stones, Fernandinho, Mendy, De Bruyne, Gundogan, Silva, Mahrez, Gabriel Jesus, Sterling.
Subs: Bravo, Jose Angelino, Rodri, Bernardo Silva, Joao Cancelo, Otamendi, Foden.
Referee: Chris Kavanagh (Lancashire).
They're off from SJP. It's the Toon vs Citeh
Great to see both sides in their traditional kits.
Thanks, Bob. Yes it was. How was your and Kate's Thanksgiving?
Agreed 100%.UWS is missing out on a collector's item
Banjo Boy's lads vs Not a Big Club has just kicked off in what is currently a mid table battle.
All Citeh from the off. The only player that seems to be exciting the SJP crowd is St. Maximin.
So what do you make of the two big North London clubs being manager-less?
Correct, Bob. Brucie looks to have a defensive lineup that's designed to keep it tight at the back and frustrate Citeh, hitting them on the break as they have with some victories this season/
We had a marvelous day. My secretary had gifted me with several big bags of venison, as her brothers are hunters. So we dug up an old recipe for Burgundy Venison that was in Kate's family and made that as our main dish. It was delicious.
I was surprised with both decisions. Perhaps a little less surprised with the Gunner's decision. Not sure who they will appoint on a permanent basis. Evil Neil is now available.
I've never had venison , but heard from various people that it's delicious. I heard it tastes like chicken, LOL!
Not sure if you know , but the Cottagers won 1-2 at the Swans yesterday with a double from Mitrovic. He has an incredible 15 Championship goals this season. Now two points behind Leeds. A must win for Leeds today
Morning boys
I am here... none of the games today are barn burners!
Good morning, UWS. Agreed. The main news is the sacking of Emery by the Board.
There is the Euro Draw at Noon today
ESPN 3 is showing it
Some of the groups are almost set! I think Belgium already know two of their three opponents! They seem to have an easy group as well
The top match tomorrow is on Gold. It's Wolves vs the Evil Blades, which is 5th vs 6th, which may change after today's results.
Belgium will be in a group with Denmark and Russia
Morning, UWS! How are you, mate?
What about Leeds v. Boro?
I just checked and the draw is also on the telly on ESPN NEWS
The match on Plus at that time is the Rams vs QPR
Bob's beach buddy is in charge for the Goooners at Carrow Road tomorrow
I've noticed recently that there are certain commentators, and Jim Beglin is one of them, who adopt a sort of tone of inevitability in their voices when it come to Citeh, as if they're going to score from every half chance. It's really irritating.
The FA Cup Second Round is this weekend and UWS is probably pleased that Pompey is hosting Altrincham today rather than during their giant killing days of the 70s and 80s.
I know! Who would have thought I'd be hanging out with a future Arsenal manager all those years ago.
Wednesday take the lead on Saturday at the Valley
LOL, UWS. Bob will agree with the haircut if not with the managerial credentials.
Totally agree with you Bob
Good free kick opportunity but Shelvy goes for a low percentage option of striking it near post, as if he's going to beat Ederson from that range. Stupid.
Bob never mentioned anything about yesterday's key result. Must be focused with the task at hand at 10.
GOAL !!!! CITEH TAKE THE LEAD WITH A STERLING EFFORT.
One nil
Sterling gets a lucky bounce to slot it home
Going gaga over them again
GOAL! Sterling fires Citeh into the lead. A bit jammy as it bobbled about a bit in the box before falling conveniently to Raheem.
0-1!
David Silva played a one two then a pass went off a Toon defender, allowing a Sterling first time finish to give Citeh the lead.
Don't recall Dub having to make a save prior to the goal.
Bad boy Gundogan picks up a yellow card for a hack on St. Maximin.
In the Cup. Newport won 0-1 at 8th tier Maldon and Tiptree yesterday, with the goal goal scored in second half stoppage time.
GOAL! Newcastle are back in it!
YES!
1-1!!
Teams need to attack City and not be scared of them!
The game really needed that. Nicely worked through Almiron and Willems fires home from about the same range that Sterling scored a moment ago.
GOAL ! JETHRO BODINE WILLIAMS TIES IT UP FOR THE TOON AND ALMIRON WITH HIS FIRST EVER TOON ASSIST. NICE FINISH
The Toon have their tails up at least temporarily. Corner chance now and the home crowd are loving it.
I think that was the Toon's first shot of any kind
We now have a contest on our hands.
Of course, I'll be watching this lot in a few weeks or so
All square at the Valley
The draw for the Third Round is on Monday at 2 PM EST. I'm mentioning that because I know you two always love to be around for the Third Round draw.
I'm sure you are scouting the opposition, UWS. Any tips for OGS?
They better not play like this on Boxing Day!
That assist from Almiron was his first ever goal involvement for the Toon. The perfect time for that and about bloody time
Agreed, UWS. United better not play like they did in the second half on Thursday.
Newcastle did have one weak effort by the bloke on the left wing...he cut in and fluffed his shot
The Match at the Valley isn't currently significant from a Leeds point of view. The one yesterday was as is the one on Monday
This weekend and next are my last two weekends on LOB until the new year
The weekend after next, I will be in Fort Lauderdale....very close to Prem Fan Fest in Miami
The following weekend, I will have just landed in London
The following weekend, I will be ready to head home on the Sunday
Can't believe it is so close!
There was also the free kick from Shelvey that was curled a little to far wide as is he had the wrong golf putter.
I would have preferred a draw in yesterday's match, of course, but I'm okay with our current position. We just need to keep winning.
WOW ! That is incredible. ! Delighted for you. Know about your plans in Blighty! what will you be doing on the beach in South Florida! Hopefully not coming back looking like lobster!
Just a reminder it's PNE vs the Baggies on Monday with kickoff at 2:45 PM, which will probably be about a half hour after the Third Round draw concludes
St. Maximin wanted to beat the whole Citeh defense but he inevitably took on one man too many.
St. Max broke with max speed and power, but had to get past one too many Citeh players
So when are the Third Round fixtures?
More like getting past max number of players!
It's the weekend of January 4th if I'm not mistaken
That makes sense. It's usually right after New Year's Day.
There will be at least one non league team in the Third Round Since Kingstonian of the Isthmian premier League host National League side, AFC Fylde
Well, we take off at 11 pm on Friday Dec 20th and arrive at 10:55 on Saturday
Family will pick the five of us(Me, Tom, Matt and Wyatt and Paul). We will drop the boys off at their Air B&B next to Waterloo Station and then drive home to Suffolk
I think the plan is that I will drive to London and pick them up on Christmas morning. Spend the day with the family and get up early in Boxing Day and I will be driving Lisa's car to Manchester. We will be leaving early and hopefully get to Old Trafford by Noon. We will walk around and be in dreamland! We can enter the stadium 3 hours before the match and stay an hour after. The kick off is at 5:30
I think we will drive back to Suffolk and I will take the boys back to London on the 27th. They are going to the West Ham Leicester match on the 28th
We fly home on the 29th
Walker had a pop from distance but it is blocked out. The problem for Newcastle right now is that the robot-like Citeh midfield is picking up every second ball.
Sounds like a great plan, mate - I hope you love every minute of it!
The televised match at 10 will be the Spuds vs the Cherries with late one being the battle of the bottom two as the Saints host the Hornets. The winner will be in the drop zone , but close to safety.
I second that.It will be a tiring , but exciting week.
I agree with UWS, the televised matches today aren't that inspiring. Kate and I might forgo the late one and do some Christmas shopping up in Buffalo.
I definitely don't want City to win the title for a third time on the trot. if they do, they could go on to win four.... no one has ever done that!
Only Arsenal (20s), Huddersfield(20s), Liverpool(80s) and United(99, 00, 01 AND 07, 08, 09)have done that!
I don't want Liverpool either
LET'S GO LEICESTER!!
Thinking the same Bob about today's fair
Who do you think will be the next Arsenal manager?
Almiron...will he ever score!
Agreed, Bob. You might want to stick around for the Euro draw at noon prior to the Christmas shopping
I'm not sure, UWS. Other than Mo Po, who wouldn't go for obvious reasons I can't think of a qualified manager that's currently available. Perhaps someone from the continent
HT at SJP
It's 1-1 at the half.
Here are the latest odds from PADDYPOWER
Massimiliano Allegri 11/10.
Nuno Espirito Santo 4/1.
Freddie Ljungberg 6/1.
Mikel Arteta 6/1.
Mauricio Pochettino 10/1.
Rafa Benitez 12/1.
Carlo Ancelotti 14/1.
Patrick Vieira 16/1.
Brendan Rodgers 16/1
Eddie Howe 20/1.
The second half is underway from an unusually sunny SJP.
Allegri looks a possibility if he's willing to learn or does speak English. Not sure is Nuno the Saint wants to leave Wolves, but Bob's beach buddy and Raffa look like possibilities.
I'm sorry....just too much passing by City! Pep has ruined the sport in my book
Talking about managers, the Foxes host the Toffees tomorrow. Could that be Marco Silva's last match in charge of the Toffees? The Gunners would be foolish to hire him
Hopefully this is just a fad and not the wave of the future for footie.
Nice tackle by Fernadez for a Citeh corner
Back for the second half with the official brekkies of the LOB. The longer Citeh are frustrated here, the happier I am.
Are any of the Toon fans giving Brucie and credit at all
They have a much better record than under Rafa
I'd love to see Eddie Howe get a chance at a bigger club.
Just realized that I will be seeing Bruce on BD
Nice solo run, by central defender , Fernandez and his pass to Joe Linton leads to a Toon free kick
Shelvy seems to want to hit every free kick no matter the range. What a numpty.
I think Eddie Howe is content staying at Dean's Court and is not necessarily pushing for a big job .
More than a good haircut is needed to be a great Premier League player or manager
Wonder if UWS will b seeking an autograph from the United legend.
Don't know why he'd mention Foden...Pep says he's best he's ever coached BUT NEVER plays him
Talking about Almiron. I realize he hasn't scored, but he did get his first assist, which for all intents and purposes is just as good as goal. Especially, today
That is bizarre from Pep even though he's supposed to be the heir apparent for David. Silva that is.
I expect that Almiron will come good eventually. Not sure about Joelinton, though.
OH! Nice run down the left by David Silva and Dub misjudged the cross and it was headed wide by Jesus at the far post.
What was that shot!!
A shot of an empty stadium from behind the goal
Way too far wide for Almiron's first goal. Well out of Toon in the key of L.
Approaching the hour mark. I expect some changes from Pep.
Talking about empty stadiums . On Thursday when Wolves played away to Braga it looked the majority of fans were Wolves fans. The home section was three fourths empty
Well, this stadium isn't empty!
It was a shot taken before the game!
Will Emery see the Citeh Board replace Pep with Arteta at the hour mark?
I see. I would have been surprised if it was. It rarely is, especially hen a team like Citeh is in Toon.
I hope all the City players get hurt and board allow Arteta to leave which pisses Pep off and he buggers off
oh....United go to the Etihad next week!
Thanks for the reminder. I forgot about that Manc Derby.
What kind of cross was that from Mendy?
There will be Prem matches on Tuesday and Wednesday. The first midweek Prem matches of the season?
Mendy too busy on his Twitter account, forgetting that his priority is football.
More passing around the back!
In terms of the PPP, weekend at Bernie's was suspended for am inappropriate tweet. The first off field suspension of the season?
Jose back to Old Trafford!
I winder if the game is just "passing" Pep by.
Correct. That may be the key midweek match. I hope he gets a hostile reception, but then he enjoys that.
Oh - great double save by Dubravka from Jesus and then KDB.
Commentator having kittens as City go close to scoring
Why don't we have David Coleman's ONE NIL
OH!! Superb reflex block by Dub from Jesus then a close range effort from DB blocked for a Citeh corner
Bsilva and Foden on for Dsilva and Mahrez
Pep with a double change. Weekend at Bernie's on for Mahrez during the weekend and David Silva replaced by his understudy, Phil Foden
Bernie Sanders on for another campaign stop.
Bernie back after his suspension for the first off field incident of the season. Did anyone in the PPP pick him?
way hey.... my match gets a mention!!
Oh - big miss by Bernie there. Pep not pleased.
Well wide by Bernie after the ball broke to him off ping pong action in the Toon box.
UWS will be busy during the match at OT. He will be playing his favorite game: Name That Toon !
Manquillo tackle Sterling for Citeh corner in a battle of former Pool players
I suspect that Big Brucie might be happy with a point here; Pep - not so much.
Front post corner... such a waste!
It is really dangerous when it comes off....ONE OUT OF A HUNDRED TIMES
That sounds like an accurate description, Bob. A nice recovery by the Toon after a disappointing performance at Villa Park on Monday
St. Max went for a long ball there and seemed to be bundled off the ball in the box. Referee not interested. Nor is VAR.
Long range effort from KDB dragged wide, but it must have taken a nick as a corner was given
It was a nice long ball from Shelvey, but didn't see any wrong doing from Kyle wlaker or his Citeh teammates
I don't know what the commentators are talking about. Walker didn't play the ball there. Just shoved St. Max aside. Obstruction at the very least but referees never give indirect free kicks in the box.
Christian Atsu on for St. Max.
GOAL !!!KDB GIVES CITEH A 1-2 LEAD
GOAL! One from the top drawer by KDB to win it here.
1-2!
Nice finish by KDB off the bar after a cross from Mendy was headed out after a pass from Phil Foden. Toon wanted a foul call on the tussle prior to the ball breaking to Foden
Rodri to come for Jesus to bolt the door now.
Final roll of the dice from Pep as Rodri is on for Jesus. Seems like Pep is looking to hold on to the lead by Keeping possession.
That shot from KDB was really in Toon, but to the Toon of the notes we wanted to hear. Sound about right?
Did UWS miss a goal while in the bog?
It appears that way.
Mendy wins a Citeh corner off of Manquillo
Fernandinho volleys high and wide off a corner that was headed away
Now Newcastle have a decent free kick chance. Let's hope that Shelvy doesn't try to hit this one at goal.
Cynical trip by Fernadinho on Manquillo just outside the Citeh box. Why wasn't he booked?
GOAL! Shelvy with a rocket to level it!
YESSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!! DESMOND AT SJP. NICE LONG RANGE FINISH BY SHELVEY OFF A SHORT FREE KICK
Not quite sure why no one was picking Shelvy up. He's hit every ball within fifty yards today.
Just back from the loo
MISSED TWO!
What a time for Shelvey to score his first Toon goal at SJP
It was 1-1 before you left and 1-1 i terms of missed goals. Welcome back.
Nocito Curse in full effect this morning.
A Barber Shop Quartet of stoppage time minutes not in Toon to what the home fans wanted.
Teams level when he left and level when he came back.
Oh - Sterling was in there at the back post and KDB found him beautifully. Good grab by Dubravka.
OH!!! Dub does well to save a volley from Sterling off a cross from KDB. Thankfully it lacked power.
My buddy texted me saying the commentator went overboard about KDB's goal
"One of 5 people on earth could score like that"
CRAP
Mendy with a tragic slip there. How does he get in this side?
Again.... is Bruce going to get any credit?
Are the fans finally going to give him credit?
Desmond needs to go to the bog, but is holding on till the final whistle blows.
Yeah - Beglin was going gaga about it. It was, in all fairness, quite a nice volley.
Under a minute to go
Will City win it
Perhaps Brucie's missus will give him some credit tonight?
Terrible clearance there
United survive
Oh dear...another sub
That's it - Citeh have dropped two more points. They've no chance to retain the title now.
It's over and finishes Desmond at SJP. A superb result for Brucie's side.
THAT'S IT
Well done Toon!
Get that out of your system for Boxing Day!
I am off for walkies...Shad is at me
Citeh up to second , but will probably move back to fourth after the Foxes and Chelsea play.
Citeh are now in second temporarily and some eight points behind Liverpool, with Leicester and Pool still to play this weekend.
I'm getting psyched up now for the Leeds v. Boro match. No telly coverage once again but it's still the one I'll be following. We're on a four match winning streak. Let's have another one.
The starting line-up for the Leeds boys:
Kiko, Ayling, White, Cooper, Stu Dallas, Kal, Klich, Pablo, Harrison, Helder, Patrick.
Subs: Miazek, Douglas, Alioski, Berardi, Stevens, Clarke, Nketiah
I am back as they get going at Spurs
Got my Soccer Saturday going!
Lovely Jubbley
Goal Rush hasn't started
Back for the 10 AM matches. Watching Jose's first prem match in charge at SFL II. He looks fit and trim
Another loss for Banjo as Not a Big Club won 1-3 at the Valley. Their big Kosovar striker scored the third goal. Bob's two least favorite Scots combined for their first goal
Rooney not allowed to play until January but is in the dug out today at home to QPR
Maybe I'll get some more money back from NBC with Goal Rush still not working!
We're away in the 10 o'clockers. Come on, you Leeds!
I believe the match at OT will be Jose's first in charge of the Spuds outside the capital. Is that correct?
Wonder if Bob will be giving Woodie a cheer on his return to ER
LEEDS TAKE THE LEAD!!!
Wonder if Roon will become the manager instead of the coach. Phillipe Cocu must be on thin ice
Bamford with the goal
3rd minute goal....score more and often
WAY HAY! BAMFORD GIVES LEEDS THE LEAD AGAINST HIS FORMER CLUB. Congrats, Bob.
Leeds top, pending the Monday nighter
Leeds would five clear in for the promotion spots
YESSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!
We're barely started and former Boro boy Patrick Bamford has scored against his old employers.
1-0 Whites!
Leeds top as well, pending the Monday nighter
That's Patrick's seventh of the season.
Jeff with a great pun. O'Ware sent off for Partick Thistle. Their fans always say beware of O'Ware
The Bees take the lead vs Luton. Pontus credited with the assist as an innocuous long ball was misjudged.,
Aberdeen on top vs St. Helen Mirren. Bob wants a visual.
