A full explanation of the Euro 2020 play offs
Twenty teams have qualified for Euro 2020. The four remaining spots will come from the playoffs. Nations League results have been used to determine which teams are in the playoffs. If you look at my diagram, Iceland was the only League A team not to automatically qualify for the Euros. That leaves three vacancies in League A. Since there were only four League B teams that failed to qualify for the Euros we go to Path C. If you look at the four circled teams , one will play Scotland at Hampden Park. The other three will go to Path A with the lowest seeded team playing away to Iceland and the higher seeded of the remaining two hosting the other. The draw for that will take place tomorrow at 6 AM EAST. Here are the playoffs we already know :
Path B : Bosnia vs Northern Ireland
Slovakia vs Republic of Ireland
Path C : Norway vs Serbia
Path D : Georgia vs Belarus
North Macedonia vs Kosovo
Any questions ?

Thanks, MUR! I really appreciate your taking the time to try to explain this complicated mess to all of us. Your diagram is especially helpful but I'm sure I'll have questions to come.
You're welcome , Bob. Glad to hep and hope I did.
The draw for the playoffs, or rather , remaining playoff matches was made earlier this morning. Keep in mind that the higher seeded team is the host team in the semis. A draw was made to determine the host team in the final for each path.In each path the semis and the final or each one off matches,
Path A: Iceland vs Romania
Bulgaria vs Hungary
The winner of Bulgaria vs Hungary will host the final
Path B: Bosnia vs Northern Ireland
Slovakia vs Republic of Ireland
The winner of Bosnia vs Northern Ireland will host the final
Path C : Scotland vs Israel
Norway vs Serbia
The winner of Norway vs Serbia will host the final
Path D: Georgia vs Belarus
Kosovo vs North Macedonia
The winner of Georgia vs Belarus will host the final
When the draw is made for the Euros on November 30th there will be four pots. The winner of each path is part of part four. The winner of Path C will go into Group D with England since Scotland is one of the venues for the Euros. The winner of Path B goes into Group E with Spain since Ireland is one of the venues for the Euros.
Path A has Hungary and Romania as venues for this Summer's Euros. If Hungary wins path A then they go into Group F with Germany with the Path D winner in Group C with Holland and Ukraine. If Romania wins Path A then they go into Group C with Holland and Ukraine with the Path D winner in Group F with Germany. If Iceland or Bulgaria win Path A then then they go into Group F with Germany with the winner of Path D into Group C with Holland and Ukraine.
Any questions?
Now for this Summer's Euros:
Host Nations:
Group A : Italy
Group B : Russia and Denmark. A draw will be made November 30th to see who will be playing all three matches at home since both were among the 20 qualifiers
Group C :Holland and possibly Romania
Group D : England and possibly the Auld Enemy
Group E: Spain and possibly Republic of Ireland
Group F: Germany and possibly Hungary
Teams have already been put into pots one, two, three ,and four for the draw on November 30th Groups B and C are the only groups with a host Nation that's not a Number One seed. The only remaining Number One seeds are Belgium and Ukraine. The Ukraine cannot go into group since Ukraine vs Russia is a prohibited fixture( even I know the reason for that). Therefore Ukraine goes into Group C with Holland and Belgium goes into Group B with Russia and Denmark. All the number one seeds are in a group before the draw has been made.
Last and possibly least are the fourth seeds. This area the four path winners, Wales, and Finland. The Path winners will be in Groups, C,D,E,and F. Wales will either be in Group A with Italy, playing matches in Rome and Baku or Group B with Russia, Denmark, and Belgium with matches in Copenhagen and St. Pete. Finland will be in the other group. Looks a tough ask for the Welsh and Finns.
Any questions?
An alternative , but equivalent explanation. The spots have been decided in each group for this Summer's upcoming Euros:
Group A: Italy with Wales or Finland
Group B: Belgium, Russia, Denmark, and Wales or Finland
Group C: Holland and Path A or Path D winner
Group D: England and Path C winner
Group E :Spain and Path B winner
Group F: Germany and Path A or Path D winner
The remaining spots in each group will be determined by a draw on November 30th, based on seeding.
Great stuff, mate. I'm very hopeful about England's chances.
