The Season's Curtain Raiser
Twenty-eight days after last season ended, the new season starts today with the CHARITY(will always be for me) Shield. The Champions(sigh) Liverpool take on the FA Cup Winners Arsenal in the annual clash of the big two trophy winners.
The first Charity Shield match was way back in 1908 when the League Champs, Man Utd, took on Southern League champs QPR. The match that we are all used to now only started in 1974 when Liverpool played Leeds in a lovely punch up match between Billy and Kevin!!
I saw a picture somewhere that had Arsenal in red and Liverpool in their new green shirt.....I know it is just for $$$ but the Champions should be the home team!
Join me for the match. Kick off at 11:30 EST

I was thinking back...I don't think that the Charity Shield was televised back in the day.
Did we see it the next day on MotW?
Morning, Dave - thanks for getting us going - great image!
I can't quite believe that a mere seven days after the Champions League Final, we're somehow settling in watch the Community Shield.
Just saw the 76 CS between Pool and Soton....it was Barry Davies....so that was the BBC...but was it live!!
Welcome Bob
Plus' coverage starts at 11
Way hey!!
Coverage starts... in the studio with Craig Burley
Rainy... cold Wembley
ESPN pregame folks aren't allowed in the stadium
And the mic is broken!

I guess the picture I saw was wrong
Liverpool wearing red shorts so I guess they'll be wearing all red
Arsenal have maroon shorts on... is it with Yellow shirts?
Two strong sides named...pleased with that
I think the Arsenal shirts are going to be white
Leeds in the top ten favorites to win the title!!
200-1!!
I am just hoping that Liverpool have a season as champions like Leeds did in 92.... a point from relegation and never won away
Hi again - that's cloud cuckoo land talk to me. Premier League survival is Job #1. Then we can talk about any other goals. Top Ten would be dream land for us.
I know...I think they'll be fine
Liverpool and City are good
Chelsea spend mega bucks already
United have done NOWT
The Shield comes out... looks shiny from the front but all scratched up wood at the back
The Premier League and FA Cup Trophies out as well
At the first few CS matches, the teams carried out their trophies from the tunnel...they should still do that
Teams coming out together in the wide tunnel
COME ON YOU GUNNERS!
I do like them having the trophies out there
GSTQ being sung by some woman on the pitch
Some moistened bint singing the National Anthem now.
Definitely cheering on the Gunners today - hope they can damage Liverpool's confidence ahead of our match with them in two weeks time.
EFL Cup matches going on right now
Just past the 70th minute mark
Blackburn 2 Doncaster 2
Preston 4 Mansfield 0
Stoke 0 Blackpool 0
Stevenage 3 Pompey 3....it was 3-1
Arsenal in their white shirt with spilled paint!
We are off.... come on you gooners!!!!
The Black Lives Matter recognition continues during the week of protests in Wisconsin.
Is your sound keep going out?
Arsenal's last three Wembley opponents
Man City.... win
Chelsea... win
Liverpool....?
How was your first week back at work?
Nope - my sounds just fine.
Phew....almost an go there!
I hope there is no drinks break
It was a really good week. I'm really enjoying the new, more relaxed schedule, which just allows me to focus on my teaching. The teaching is hard, though. I come home from class really exhausted but then I have plenty of time to recover before the next one.
One week down and we've got two COVID cases among the students. They're being quarantined off campus.
Free kick chance for Liverpool.... THREE GUYS OPEN.... ball is in the net... offside!
Liverpool have it in the net but Virgil was flagged offside fairly quickly. Ruled out. But alarm bells will be ringing in the Arsenal backfour.
Sounds good
VVD was in a an offside position when the ball is kicked...KNOW WHERE YOU ARE!
Big transfer moves for Leeds this week - Rodrigo in from Valencia - our biggest ever signing for the club.
And Robin Koch, a German central defender from Freiburg, in to obviously replace Ben White who's gone back to Brighton after his loan spell.
It is good to see that Iceland vs England is going to be on ABC next weekend!
Blackburn had been losing at home to Doncaster but are now 3-2 up
Arsenal playing around at the back.... stupidity
Milner with a chance... should have scored that
That'll be brilliant. I've got to drive Kate to a medical appointment in the morning, so I may miss out on a bit of the first half.
GOAL! Aubama fires Arsenal into the lead! Pick that one out!
They are STILL playing around at the back!! Why do it when strikers are pushed up!
GOAL!!!!! GREAT GOAL BY Aubam
Great stuff - I hope that Liverpool continue to stumble. Always difficult to defend a title.
Two in the semi
Two in the final
One and counting in the CS
Is Steve watching?
Barca have sacked their own law firm....for advising Messi about leaving as a free agent
Tom just said that quite a few Chelsea players have Covid.... will they be able to start the season
Oh - Eddie nearly adds a second one there. Allison did well to tip around.
More stupid playing at the back..this time by Liverpool
Great break... nice shot a great save
What a shame
Sako was number 77 and now has the best number... 7
Liverpool look really out of sorts - loving it!
I really don't like the modern day tactics talk
Here's a tactic.... hit the big rectangle as many times as you can
You're almost there - the greatest number of all is of course....6.
That tactic works for me. Hope our new boy Rodrigo can do that right from the off.
Of course you are wrong!
After all, I was born on 7/7
EFL
Blackburn beat Donny 3-2
PNE beat Manfield 4-0
other two still going
both all square
Whoever is controlling the fake crowd noise is doing an excellent job. They're able to pipe outraged crowds whenever there is a foul.
Leeds get a mention
Yes, but you were born in 1964.
Pompey going to penalties
Oh - Arsenal opened Liverpool up again and Eddie had a chance but shanked his shot wide.
had a birthday in 77 and 07
Dangerous cross put across the six....no one in red crashing the box
Pompey win 3-1 on pens
SHOOT....why didn't Arsenal shoot at the big rectangle!!!!
Too much messing about at the back.
HATE IT
Bloody Pep
Robertson...couldn't beat the first man with cross
Oh - great block there by newly-shorn Bellerin as Robertson's pass threatened.
another useless cross!
Another short corner.... VVD must be so annoyed!!
What's the point!!
Arsenal still taking their time shooting....deflected for a corner
I would be irritated - we should the big boys even make an effort to trot up the pitch for a corner.
Where is someone at the back post!
Only one guy running into the box!
BLOODY MODERN DAY FOOTBALL
BLOODY PEP
Half time
Good news so far
Half-time - Great half of football, to my mind. If Liverpool play like this in two weeks, we've got a chance.
Gunners once up at the half thanks rio a great finish from Aubama . Great cross field pass from Bakayo Saka for the goal and Sara did well to find Eddie, who forced a great sauce from Allison., Delighted for Steve
Hey David,
Where have you been?
Burley giving Arsenal credit for passing it around at the back because they were lucky enough to get it out of the back
Good afternoon, Dave. Took Sparky for walkies and was too hot to chat. It's been that hot the past few days. Will be around for the second half.,
I liked the goal. I thought it was a great team goal and a great finish.
On the other hand, I watched our Toros in the ir first ever nationally televised game in their history from the Vip parking section on the jumbotron. Our keeper was caught faffing in second half stoppage time down 1-2 to our rivals, San Antonio. Had his pocket picked and we lost 1-3. Her did save a penalty a minute later
Teams coming out for the second half
Keep it up Gunners!
We are off
Second half underway from Wembley
Congratulations on Pompey's win vs Stevenage.
Liverpool to be outdone by both Dahlgren brothers inside a fortnight....I'd love it!
Welcome, David - how's your week been?
I'm just back from a lunch break to see Firmino go just wide. Knock that off!
Useless modern day cross there
Martin Tyler basically pushing for young Rhian Brewster to start for Pool because he scored goals in the Championship while on loan. Don't see him replacing one of the red musketeers . Curling effort just wide by Bobby Chompers
Had a fairly good week, Bob., Thank you for asking. How was your first week of school?
I would love that, too. However, I'd take a point in that match ahead of kickoff.
Not one shot on target for Liverpool....great team? I don't think so
FYI
Stoke beat Blackpool 5-4 on pens after a nil niller
David, did you get any of Laura?
No we did not. We were on the dry side of Laura, so it's been like the hottest part of Summer the past few days. I'll take that over the Hurricane though,. Thank you for asking
Was that Pool's first shot on target ? Great block by Martinez from Mane
So dangerous at the back...... STUPID!
Leeds Academy tackle gets Milner in the book
A clash of former Leeds players as Milner fouls Eddie from behind
Agreed. Textbook LUFC tackle,.
Good first week of school - the teaching is tiring because of the new provisions but we're hanging in there.
Minnie minnow and Keita for Neco Williams and Milner.
On this evidence, I can't really see Liverpool mounting a successful defense of their title. They seem completely toothless.
That's what I have read on social media. Glad I'm retired. Sounds rather stressful.
It's hard to predict . Pool not playing a full strength lineup and Citeh's defense has more holes than Swiss cheese. It should be a close title race this year
Have Liverpool done any business during the transfer window? Doesn't seem like it. This is the same team.
It is but the students have been great so far. They make it worth it.
I think they bought a player or two but not big uns
I saw the pay out so far in the summer
Leeds 53 mil
Man U 0
Just to let you all know next Saturday will be interesting for Yours Truly. England on ABC then Texas State vs SMU on ESPN. Melanie and the marching band will be socially distanced behind the end zone in the fans seats. Your thoughts?
That's a thrashing by more than a cricket score. Pool slaughtered us in the market by quite a few Bob
Rangers 2-0 up at Hamilton Academical
Did you see Celtic lost at home in the 2 QR of CL.... and are out
That's great.... there won't be fans... correct?
I did see that and was surprised. I guess they are now in the EL.
I read Mait-Niles was out the door earlier this summer
There will be fans. Allowed up to 25% capacity, which is 7,500 fans. I think it will be less because only season ticket holders are allowed to attend matches this season. Fans will supposedly be social distanced and wearing masks. Not sure how that will be?
We're definitely making a go of staying in the top division - that's for sure.
Martin Tyler said Maitland-Niles is headed to Wolves to replace Matt Doherty, who is headed to spurs. Have you heard anything about that?
I think Saka took too long to make a move
Wins a corner
I expect Leeds to survive, but due to more than your s and Kate's generous hospitality I expect a long season for the Cottagers
As I said, I did hear was leaving. In fact, I thought he left
Stupid foul by Cedric the Entertainer on Minnie Minnow.
Timo Werner scored 4 minutes into his debut today at the Amex in front of 2,500 fans
Brighton tied it up in added time
Did you? Was that before I started chatting today?
GOAL! Mini Me has equalized for Liverpool!
Liverpool scores!
VERY LUCKY ricochet!
Bugger
GOAL !!! MINNIE MINOOW OIPENS HIS ACCOUNT FOR POOL, OFF A ONE TWO WITH SALAH. NOW 1-1
I said it a few minutes before Martin did
Goal is given
Scrappy goal for the Gunners to concede.
I don't want this one to go into extra time.
As things stand this is headed for penalties.. No ET if this is tied at the end of ninety minutes
By the way, my CBS All Access free trial is ending next weekend. I'll be canceling it ahead of time on Friday.
Thanks, David - I'm glad to hear that.
I just checked . I was one bloody minute late with that Maitland-Niles comment. If you are going to nit pick at every little mistake I make, then stop. To quote Steve that goes in the I don't care pile.
Really boring stuff now from the Reds.
Tom set up an account for a week.....I just cancelled it
Great close range block by Martinez from Mane
What?
Several late Gunners changes
Would love to see the Arsenal go on and win this one.
Big chance.... Willock with a chance....he missed..... what a pillock
Oh - Joe Willock just inches away from sealing the Arsenal win with a great header that just flashes wide.
Joe Willock should have given the Gunners a late head as he headed wide with a close range free header off a great cross from Cedric the Entertiner
Oh - Aubama should have thrown himself at that little chip in. Got caught flat-footed.
Arsenal pressing....modern day cross
Who got MotM?
Aubam at the near post.... never going to score from there!
He was the only one making the run tho
I'd give it to the "Girl with the Biggest Tits!" ;-)
An LOB blogging trio of stoppage time minutes.
LOL, Bob! I think we all would.
modern day subbing....geez
Brewster comes on for Winnie.
Rhian Brewster on for wijnalbum, presumably to add an extra good penalty taker
the lady with the big knockers from ? commerical
Leeds getting mentioned all over the place
Liverpool vs Leeds in the '74 shield went to penalties as will this
That is it
Penalties it is
I liked it when they shared the trophy for 6 months each
Martin Tyler references the Charity Shield match where Bremner and Keegan were sent off. I was there with Steve and my dad. I remember the sending off like it was yesterday.
Well, my reference was to the All England Summarizing Proust sketch from Python.
Wow....I didn't know that Bob!!
WOW, Bob. Quite an experience for you, Steve, and your dad
Two South American keepers in the shoot out. Salah to take the first spot kick
Yeah - one of the best. We were really young. I was ten and had only been a Leeds fan for a couple of years. It was one of those situations where my Dad just piled us in the car. I don't think we had tickets ahead of time. Just paid through the turnstiles.
Salah up first... done nothing all day....up he comes....one nil
1-0 Pool . Slaha sends Martinez the wrong way
New haircut boy Mo Salah scores first. Martinez went the wrong way.
Wow!! Thanks for the invite... who cares that we didn't know each other yet!
Reese Nelson now for the Arsenal. My kind of pen - fired in low to the left.
R-N.....nice pen
Fab...with a fab pen
Fabinho scores easily - Liverpool 2-1 up.
1-1 . Nelson sends allison the wrong way. Well placed pen
2-1 Pool . Fab with an identical penaltuy to Nelson
Matt-Ni up next.....simple pen
Desmond
Maitland-Niles up next...
Cheeky pen to the right. Don't like those. 2-2
Desmond. Allison rooted to the spot a s Maitland-Niles scores a cheeky pen
Brewster, just back from his loan spell, fires off the bar and over.
Here comes the late sub....I hope he misses just for that!
AND HE DOES
Brewster whacks the bar
First touch of the match....serves Klopp right
Cedric up for the Arsenal now....
Easy pen into the right corner. 2-3 Arse.
Cedric...up next...clinical pen
Liverpool must score
they do but still behind
Off the bar from Brewster
3-2 Gunners. Cedric the Entertainer sends allison the wrong way
3-3 Minnie Minnow ties it up
uh oh.... DL up next
Mini Me steps up and rifles it down the middle. Stupid pen but it's in.
3-3
Another great pen
Now Liverpool REALLY MUST score
Sideshow Bob up next....
Nice pen into the corner. I was nervous. 3-4.
4-3 Gunners. Nice pen from Bob, beating his fellow Brazi
Jones for liverpool....not Joey.... must score...he does
Surely it is now Aubamy to win it
4-4.Jones sends Martines the wrong way
Curtis Jones to save the day.
Scuffed it but in. 4-4
Up he comes....hope he knows the Shield doesn't have a base or top so he won't drop it this time
Aubama nets it and Arsenal have their first silverware for the season!
GOAL!!! AUBAMA WINS IT FOR THE GUNNERS 5-4 ON PENS. NICE PEN FROM AUBAMA
Up he comes...Great penalty again!!!
Arsenal win!!
Fantastic!!
All the Gunners' penalties were like German!!
Congrats Steve!!!
Everything going downhill for Liverpool.... long may it continue!!
