Lakenheath Old Boys
We are all former students at Lakenheath High School and other public schools in East Anglia. We were in school in the 70s and 80s and drank deeply from the well of British culture of those decades - the pints, the telly, and of course the footie!

Hiya, Steve - thanks for getting us going this afternoon. I feel the same way about these affairs and I'd honestly rather be watching a league match this afternoon.
But it's a home nations classico, so I'll be watching. I should at least be around for the first half until I have to get my head into the game for my class later on. Come on, you England boys!
Good afternoon Bob and Steve and thanks for getting us started, Steve. I agree that this is not the best time to play friendlies , but FIFA is more concerned that the show must go on. I will be watching on TUDN
Team news from Wemberley:
England: Pope, Trippier, Coady, Gomez, Saka, Phillips, Winks, Keane, Grealish, Calvert-Lewin, Ings. Subs: Dean Henderson, Mings, James, Ward-Prowse, Mount, Barnes, Maitland-Niles, Rashford, Alexander-Arnold, Maguire, Rice, Pickford.
Wales: Hennessey, Connor Roberts, Rodon, Ampadu, Ben Davies, Morrell, Mepham, Jonathan Williams, Tyler Roberts, Moore, Matondo. Subs: Ward, Gunter, Neco Williams, Cabango, Levitt, Johnson, Norrington-Davies, Smith, James, Woodburn, Vaulks, Adam Davies.
Referee: Bobby Madden (Scotland).
I addition to the friendlies today there will be the playoff semis for the final four spots in Euro 2021. There are eight semis, two from each league. Those can be seen on ESPN 3
Gareth is wisely having a look at several players tonight, including Nick Pope, Connor Coady, Bakayo Saka, Kal Phillips, Harry Winks, Jack Grealish, Dominic Calvert-Lewin, and Danny Ings.
That makes total sense to me. Why not give Everton's hot shot striker of the moment a chance rather than running, say, Marcus Rashford out once again?
That look to be en experimental lineup and why not? How else can these players show what they can do at this level?
I just want all the Arsenal boys back unscathed and ready to face Citeh away.
Looks like we've lost Tierney to mandatory quarantine because he was exposed. That leaves us Kolasinac to cover. Not good.
Watching on Plus instead . Teams getting ready to come out of the tunnel
Sorry to read that. Always sad to lose a player that way
Me too David. The TUDN coverage is my second choice. English commentary right now.
On paper, England should be massive favorites as Wales has players, playing in the Championship, L1, or not even getting a game at all at club level. Despite that Wales managed to qualify for the Euros
Teams out on the pitch now. It's the most inexperienced side to represent England in 40 years!
England with six players missing. Sterling out injured while Greenwood, Foden , Chilly , Abraham , and one other that slips my mind broke COVID rules
Gareth Bale, Hal Robson-Kanu, and Ramsey out for various reasons
Nice tribute now to all of the fallen England heroes during the COVID period.
Bosnia takes the lead vs Northern Ireland in a playoff semi
They're off from Wembley
Wales get us underway, then.
Sancho the other out for breaking COVID rules
All of the England bad boys who have flouted the COVID restrictions must be feeling like chumps tonight.
In other playoff semis , Hungary takes the lead in Transylvania while Siggy gives Iceland the lead vs Romania
I would hope they would feel like chumps, but not sure if they do
North Macedonia takes the lead vs Kosovo in a playoff semi. Not sure about South Macedonia
Tyler Roberts with a shot deflected for a corner off a nice build up
Tyler Roberts with a nervous early effort there. Slashed at it and it was deflected well wide for a corner.
Poor corner from Jonathan Williams cleared by the first man
Danny Ings wins a corner off a pass from Trippier off a long diagonal
Decent corner over but Michael Keane just couldn't quite get the timing on the header right.
Michael Keane heads on the corner sideways the it's cleared
Ings gives their keeper a wake up call for diddling about with the ball at the back.
Hennessey rusty after not getting playing time with Palace
Not a lot to write home about so far.
Ah - too bad there. Gomez found DCL really well but the Everton striker fell over the ball.
It's going to happen for CL. He's able to get away from his marker at will.
Oh - now DCL rounded the keeper but then was forced wide and couldn't find a colleague with his center.
OH! Nice through ball for Calvert-Lewin. Rounded Hennessey, but the angle was too narrow and he had a pass cleared instead of getting a shot off
Have the Welsh left their own half yet? Giggsy's got them playing some dire stuff.
Well, they did leave their own half but it didn't relieve the tedium of their approach.
Other than the first few minutes the Welsh have been pinned in. I agree that the Welsh tactics have not been easy on the eye
Goals in the playoffs semis. Kosovo tied it up in North Macedonia, but North Macedonia took a 2-1 lead a few minutes after that
Siggy at the double as Iceland goes two up vs Romania in a playoff semi
Oh - big chance for Moore there in the England box. Got the volley completely wrong, fortunately.
Wales win a free kick on a rare attack. Crossed into the box and goes over everyone , but Kiefer Moore keeps it in play. then he volleys a cross wide
Saka finding it harder at this level than his mate Nketiah.
GOAL! Of course it would be DCL with his first international goal. He's in such hot form!
GOAL !! CALVERT-LEWIN HEADS ENGALND INTO THE LEAD ON HIS INTERNATIONAL DEBUT
Grealish to CL for England's first. Commentator is calling it inevitable. That's right.
That was made by Jack Grealish who's definitely staking a claim to be the England #10 of the future. Beat his man and laid one in on a plate for DCL.
1-0 England!
The debut boys combined nicely. Nice cross from Jack Grealish and Calvert-Lewin headed in from a couple of yards out. First sustained possession from England
Connor Roberts wins a corner off of Jack Grealish. Free header off the corner, but Chris Mepham headed straight to Nic Pope
Jack Grealish sure pulled the strings on Sunday and Liverpool were the puppets on the strings
Oh - Moore was in there but Nick Pope did really well to nick it off his boot.
Nice long ball from Chris Mepham, putting through Kiefer Moore and Nick Pope did well to rush out and save at his feet
Kiefer Moore down off that last challenge with Nick Pope
I didn't see the knock that Pope took there. Brave keeping to save that one from Moore.
Calvert-Lwin not the only Toffee to score today. Siggy with a brace for Iceland vs Romania
I'd like to see England use Saka up the left side more. He's really dangerous going forward for England.
That's better - Saka combines well with Grealish and earns a corner.
Saka wins a corner off a nice one two on the break
Corner from Kal Phillips headed on then Saka passes to Connor Coady, who shoots well over
Looks like that's it for Kiefer Moore , which is a huge blow to Wales, who have little depth in that department
Wales' main danger man Moore is off for an injury. That's a shame for them.
Not sure about that change as Neco Williams, who is normally a right back on for Moore. Wonder who will play up front for Wales
Grealish really looks the part tonight on this stage. I've been resistant to his charms over the years but he's winning me over gradually. He's had a great start to the season.
Moore can't shake that collision with Pope off and now Nico Williams, who might have been unlucky not to start comes on. Moore was easily Wales' danger man.
Have they put Winks' photo on a milk carton yet? I'm starting to worry that he may be lost.
Nasty one there from Connor Roberts on Saka. Yellow; could have been red.
Connor Roberts booked for nasty foul on Saka
Roberts should have seen red for an awful challenge on Saka. Good to see Saka up quickly.
Looks like Tyler Roberts will be the lone striker for Wales unless it's Matondo
On the evidence of tonight's match, I'd say DCL makes the flight next summer (or whenever); Danny Ings watches from his settee.
I can tell you from experience that Tyler Roberts as the lone striker is not a winning strategy.
Nasty by Chris Mepham on Jack Grealish
Now it's Mephan straight through the back of Grealish. They're clearly getting frustrated.
Clash of heads between Calvert-Lewin and Joe Rodon. a Pair of stoppage time minutes
I think that English fair goers will be happy to know that Ings will be at home and manning the darts-throw stall and the tilt-a-whirl for them.
England totally bossing this one as the interval nears.
I wonder if Tyler Roberts is the lone striker left in the Welsh squad. I guess Matondo could partner him, but he's more a middie I believe
Tyler Roberts couldn't make the proper contact off a nice cross as it went off the top of his head and sideways. England one up at the half
Wow. That attempt at a header on goal from Tyler was really inept. Ryan may need to find a better target man in the dressing room.
Hungary two up in Transylvania early in the second half of a playoff semi. Looks like the Magyars and Icemen will be fighting it out for a place in the Euros next month
You may be right David. The only player left on the bench listed as an attacker is James, and he's a hard man to pick out for a cross.
Robson-Kanu is listed out with a wrist injury. They can't whip up a batch of plaster in Wales?
That really was a lovely combination from Grealish to DCL.
Isn't anyone worried that Harry Winks may have been abducted? I can't remember seeing him or hearing his name mentioned once after the BLM/NHS Heroes tribute.
LOL, Steve. He's been mopping up, but there's nothing to clean up. That may explain it. A wink of the eye and that may change
Niall McGinn has tied it up for Northern Ireland in a playoff semi in Bosnia
Bat Boy has given Belgium the lead vs the Ivory Coast early in the second half
Double substitution from Giggsy Ban Cabongo on for Joe Rodon. and United academy player , Dylan Levitt also on for Wales. Levitt on loan to Charlton this season
Morell replaced by Levitt. . Morell can't get a game for Bristol City and was on loan at Abe Lincoln last season
Just a reminder that Connor Coady is the first Wolves player to play for England since Steve Bull in 1989 and Kal Phillips the first Leeds player to play for England since Alan Smith in 2004
Shot from Tyler Roberts trickles harmlessly wide
Cheap shot by Ampadu on Jack Grealish. Should have been a booking, but just a lecture
I agree with you, Steve. The England midfield with the exception of Grealish was fairly quiet in the first half, but Harry Winks was particularly anonymous.
Romani a pull it back to 2-1 in Iceland with a spot kick
Agreed, Bob. Didn't even notice him for a wink and that's precious little
Another naughty challenge by Ampadu on Jack Grealish. When will he get booked?
Coady! 2-0. He'll never score an easier one. He strolled to meet that one.
Yes! England increase their lead through Connor Coady! Poor stuff from Henessey who should have claimed but allowed Coady to waltz through and stab home.
Another debut scorer tonight. 2-0!
GOAL !!! FIRST ENGLAND GOAL FOR CONNOR COADY. NICE FREE KICK FROM TRIPPIER AS HENNESSEY HESITATED AND COADY EASILY VOLLEYED IN AT THE FAR POST
Ryan Giggs seemed rightly arsed off with his side. I'm assuming that he won't be unleashing the hairy chest.
Phew - Motombo hits the post but is ruled offside anyway.
Matondo offside off a nice pass from Ampadu . hit the post just after the whistle blew
This one seems in the bag now, so I'm going to jump off the link and concentrate on my class coming up. It's quantitative research design in educational research tonight. Anyone fancy a Zoom? ;-)
He might show the hairy chest as a punishment. It's tough for a side primarily lower division players to compete with the likes of England
Have a great class and great chatting with you. I'll zoom off that one as I'm retired
Triple change from Gareth Southgate. Mings for Gomez Addams, Reece James for Kieran Trippier, and Calvert- Lewin mounted off after scoring on his international debut
Cheerio Bob.
Dylan Levitt booked for a foul from behind off a solo run by Harry Winks
Another change by Giggsy as Will Vaulks on for Ampadu
Saka wins an England corner
OGAL !! ENGLAND GOES THREE UP AS DANNY INGS SCORES A BICYCLE KICK OFF A CORNER THAT WAS HEADED ON BY TYRONE MINGS
Ings! Rides on the tilt-a-whirl are free tonight!
First ever England goal for Danny Ings. Southgate will be pleased that all three England goals scored by players opening their international scoring account
Youngest England starting lineup since 1976 during the days of Don Revie's tenure in charge
I'd get Ings off now. He pops up with goals because he's in form. We may need him against the Belgians.
Cross /shot from Jack Grealish tipped around by Hennessey for a corner
Magyars three up in Bulgaria in a playoff semi and good riddance
Serbia takes the lead in Norway in a playoff semi
Agreed, Steve. Might as well as this one is done and dusted
OH! Nice save by Hennessey off a deflected shot from Saka after a nice pass was mounted to him
Buggerrrrrr. Hennessy bats away Saka's drive. Could have been 4.
Long range shot from Will Vaulks high and wide off a run and pass from Matondo
Norway ties it up late vs Serbia in a playoff semi
Matt Smith for Johnny Williams and Chris Gunter on for Connor Roberts. Gunter doesn't even have a club if that's an example between the quality of these two sides
Ivory Coast ties it up in Belgium
Bulgaria scores a consolation vs the Magyars , but trails 1-3 in stoppage time as they will be eliminated from the playoffs
The Where's Harry contest is over. Winks departs.
Triple change for Southgate.Harvey Barnes for Grealish. Maitland-Niles for Gunners teammate, who had a successful debut, and JWP winked on to the pitch
Chris Mepham fouls Harvey Barnes about 30 yards from goal
I League A the playoff semis finished :
Bulgaria 1 Hungary 3
Iceland 2 Romania 1
Iceland and Hungary will play off for a place for the Euros next month
OH!!! Hennesssey does well to turn around a shot from Danny Ings headed from the upper 90. Nice one touch passing
In League D it finished :
Georgia 1 Belarus 0
North Macedonia 2 Kosovo 1
Georgia and North Macedonia will fight it out next month to be a makeweight at the Euros next summer
Both semis in League B and both semis in League C are in extra time
The injury prone Chris Mepham down for Wales as the Cherries defender is trying to come back after being out a while
Chris Gunter clears for a corner off England one touch passing. A pair of stoppage time minutes
Hennessey does well to save a long range shot from JWP and it's over as England run out comfortable 3-0 winners
There will be tougher opposition soon, and many of these English players won't be on the plane. But they soundly beat the Welsh that were in front of them today. That's something to savor. Cheers David.
Cheers Steve. Great chatting. Enjoy the rest of the day
