Lakenheath Old Boys

We are all former students at Lakenheath High School and other public schools in East Anglia. We were in school in the 70s and 80s and drank deeply from the well of British culture of those decades - the pints, the telly, and of course the footie!

Belgium vs England -- Same again boys

I'm hoping that the Three Lions are hungry enough today to do over the Belgians again. Join me here.

No longer anonymous or g00ne71, the original gooner71 is back. I figured out that somehow the blog was trying to force me to use my google address instead of my comcast one I signed up for.

I'm sure you're all relieved. Talk to you soon, right here.

C'mon England!!!

Hiya, boys - really looking forward to this one. I have no idea what the stakes are in the convoluted Nations League set-up but a match against Belgium is always going to be a big one.

Come on, you England boys!

Blogger United We Stand said...

I just posted the stakes buddy....stop being a plonker

Winner of the group joins France,(Holland, Poland or Italy) and Germany or Spain in the Final Four

Holders Portugal.... pipped by the World Champs yesterday

Scotland lost today for the first time in 10....they were going for 10 straight games without losses of the first time in 97 years!

They were the better team but lost to Slovakia...they are still favorites to win the group and get promoted

Blogger United We Stand said...

Of course, I am still watching the Masters

I read somewhere this week, UEFA are having discussions about possibly having the whole tournament in the UK next summer

Still have the Masters on my TV and watching ESPN on my computer. I'll change it for kick off

2:41 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

I understand the "stakes" in terms of Nations League but I don't care about the NL - it's a phony baloney tournament invented by UEFA as a money-spinner. I only care about the World Cup and the European Championship. And it's not clear to me how the NL affects either of those apart from perhaps the international ranking of sides. Am I wrong?

2:41 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Hiya David

Are you sure you're allowed to watch this...you're in the Dahlgren corner

It's a pleasure having this broadcast on the telly in English.

2:42 PM

Wouldn't Scotland have qualified for the Euros through the old playoff system regardless of the Nations League?

Blogger United We Stand said...

TURN IT OFF!!

2:42 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Horrible singing by the England boys. Gareth has to get them some coaching.

2:43 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Interesting what you stated about England possibly hosting the Euros. I think it's a last resort. I think the COVID situation won't be this dire by the Summer and that UEFA is being stubborn about the tournament being played in multiple countries

2:43 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Why? I like a good friendly!

2:43 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

The Nations League gives teams a back door to qualifying the Euros or WC

Scotland fans love the NL!

If England hadn't qualified for the Euros, they were have made the playoffs because they won their NL group

It is the LEAGUE CUP for England...I want to win it

2:44 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

LOL. We're banned, Bob?

2:44 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Welcome, David - that's my hope, too. Psychologically I can get through the spring in the same mode if there is the promise of a vaccine at some point and a return to some sort of relative normality come the summer.

2:45 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

BANNED

2:45 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Dier and Walker in the back makes for a shaky Three Lions back three

2:45 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

I could like the Nations League but for the mini-league concept. That part of it is utter, utter bollocks. I'm with you Bob, the European Championships and the World Cup provide plenty of football already.

2:45 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

What is the difference between the old playoff system and the Nations League playoffs other than the branding?

2:45 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

2:47 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Great run from Kane....shanked wide

2:47 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Harry Kane and NOT Abe to give England the lead as he has long range shot go wide off marking by Axel Witsel Rose

2:48 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

The other thing about the Nation's League is how complacently in line the commentators have been, even praising it and claiming widespread public support for it. I've not seen that, at all.

2:48 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

And I'm not sure that the presence of the Scots at a major tournament is a pro for the NL. They're a rubbish side (Liam Cooper excepted, of course).

2:48 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

I really hope this Belgian side..their Golden Generation....go the same way as England's and Portugal's

2:49 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Jason was a Denayer as he fouled Jack Grealish

2:50 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

I always want the home nations to make it

England, Wales and Scotland all in it...NoI lost in their final!

2:50 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

The problem for this Belgian side is that, even though they're a strong unit, they have very little tournament mentality, so they're always likely to lose a match in the latter stages against a bigger side.

2:50 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Kate's not happy to see Jack Grealish in the starting XI tonight - she's not a fan.

2:51 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Scots have a few decent players. Mini Cooper not the only driving force. Andy Robertson and Kieran Tierney decent players as well.

2:51 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

I am a fan of his but NOT his socks

2:51 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Of course, England wearing black arm bands for Clemence

2:52 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

I agree, Dave - I always pull for the Home Nations in qualifiers. However, if the rationale for NL is to produce more competitive tournaments, the presence of Scotland at the Euros weakens that notion.

2:52 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Ali will be North Macedonia's Leeds presence in their team this Summer. I guess Ali wasn't eligible to represent East, West South, or just plain Macedonia

2:52 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

TURN IT OFF!!

You are stubborn

2:53 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Sad that Nobby Stiles and Ray Clemence passed away within a few weeks of each other

2:53 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

That's true about the Scots. Tierney was dropping it on that Sheffield ruffian's head all match and he couldn't have been more rubbish. That Celtic center forward was equally unprofessional with his finishing. If the Scots don't sharpen up exponentially, it'll just be a participation street party with the Tartan Army again. It's enough to do Roy Keane's head in.

2:54 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Very sad news about Ray. And Des O'Connor. I can't say that I was a particular fan, but he was always a presence on the telly when we were kids, especially during the holidays.

2:55 PM

BUGGER! TIELEMANS GIVES BELGIUM THE LEAD. LONG RANGE SHOT GOES IN OFF THE INSIDE OF THE POST

2:55 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

STRUTH...in off the post!

Could Pickford have done better?

England with a pathetic ball out of the back

I hate that crap

2:55 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Bugger! Belgium go 0-1 through Tielemans!

2:56 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

Bloody Dire of Dier with a crap clearance. Now we're up against it.

2:56 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Not Pickers fault at all

oooh... Grealish should have equalized!

He did well...it was blocked

2:56 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Poor from Pickers out of the back but the deflection was key to taking it out of his range.

2:56 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

oooh....Kane with a header....saved off the line by Lukaku

2:57 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

It sounded like the Belgian tannoy played a blast of Kylie Minogue when they scored. Odd choice.

2:57 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

What a save by Lukaku... same as a goal

2:57 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

I wasn't going to say it, but I thought even with the deflection, Pickers was at fault for not covering that shot.

2:57 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Oh - Kane with a great header there and it's cleared off the line by The Chunk!

2:57 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

OH! Header from Harry Kane and Not Abel to go in off the corner . Headed off the line by the Chunk

2:58 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Good response by England here

Come on....get a goal

Eriksen gives the Danes the lead vs Iceland with a spot kick

2:59 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Training pitch routine for the free kick - nearly came off.

2:59 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

England need to just win this and have the Danes lose to the Belgians. What the Danes do today, doesn't matter

I know....nothing matters

3:00 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

I can imagine that the Belgians are big fans of Eurotrash disco.

3:00 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Back to the goal. Poor clearance from Pickford. Two passes later the Chunk passed to Tielemans, whose shot took a double deflection off of Claret and Sky Blue club men , Rice and Mings and off the inside of the post

3:00 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

OK, so now that the Danes are winning, and England is losing, have we been demoted to playing Gibraltar next?

3:00 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Grealish...shot blocked..looked like a foul there

3:00 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

I don't see why Sterling has an automatic spot

3:01 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Thank you for admitting that, Dave. Now if only Trump would admit that he lost the election, we could all move on with our lives. ;-)

3:01 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

It was a loose pass out of the back from Dier. Pickers was late to get to the deflected shot.

3:01 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

You don't think that he is one of the top English strikers in the country? He's always among the top scorers.

3:01 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Iceland guaranteed to go down

YOu're as bad as the others

I just don't get why all of you don't appreciate this

3:02 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

So bad there by Dier.... useless clearance

3:02 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Cross from KDB missed kicked over for a corner and a really dire clearance

3:02 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Dier is showing once again that he might be a reasonable option as defensive middie but he's a liability in the back four.

3:02 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

I remember pre WC18 everyone wanted him dropped. I don't think he has improved much
Scored goals for City but misses so many chances

3:03 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Agreed about Trump, Bob. Enough is enough

3:04 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

I hate you all

3:04 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

If you're talking about Sterling, he dives a lot too.

3:05 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

I think Dier was the one that gifted possession that led to the Belgian goal

3:05 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

England have had chances here

3:05 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

The replays confirm that Pickford should have kept that out, deflection notwithstanding.

3:06 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

I've just looked up Raheem's England stats. He's scored 13 goals in 58 appearances. It's not Kane's record but it's clearly better than other England forwards right now.

3:06 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Shame for Pickers - he's really having a bad time of it these days. Nick Pope must have a chance of taking his spot right now.

3:07 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Pickford "picks" the ball out of the net.

3:07 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Free kick chance for the Belgians....he got all ball... KDB is the one that made the contact!!!

3:08 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Rice fouls KDB just outside the Three Lions box

3:08 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Not just the way the refs call it...it's the way the players play

Two nil

Bloody hell...never a foul

3:09 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Dangerous free kick position now for the Belgians.

3:09 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

And Sterling could really trouble the lead-feet of Aldewierald, Denayer, and Vertongan. Has he contracted the virus? I can't understand his omission from the squad.

3:09 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

England don't deserve to be down two

3:09 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

BUGGER! DRIES MERTENS PUTS BELGIUM TWO UP. HE BENT IT LIKE BECKHAM. GREAT FREE KICK

3:09 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Bugger! Dries Mertens whips in Belgium's second goal.

3:10 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

Bugger, that's two. Very well taken free-kick. Now it's a tough ask for England.

3:10 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

It was NEVER a free kick!!

He kicked the ball away and KDB then kicked him!!

3:10 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Agreed, Dave - England have had the better chances but Belgium have taken both of their chances with precision.

3:10 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Is Sterling injured? Is he being left out for a falling out with Gareth?

3:10 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Are you guys watching on the telly? You guys seem to be behind me

3:11 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Agreed - it's the way that the game is officiated these days.

3:11 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

He has some calf injury
Rash with a shoulder

3:11 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

I'm watching on the telly, yeah.

3:11 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

Now I'm rueing that Kane shanked that first minute shot.

3:12 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

I am watching on the telly too

3:12 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

Telly.

3:12 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Dangerous cross by Kane!

Get on the end of it

I am still pleased with the performance so far

3:13 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Ah - shame that no one was following in there when Chilly dinked it back into the area.

3:13 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Grealish is getting into more dangerous positions than Kane

3:14 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Dries Mertens clears for an England corner

3:14 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

I am, too - England have played well against a strong opponent. Just need to be more clinical in taking their chances.

3:14 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

"more accomplished"
What does that mean!!

3:15 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Jorginho gives Italy the lead vs Poland with a spot kick and now Italy is top of their group, a point ahead of the Dutch

3:16 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

The dour Scot can't come up with the phrase clinical finishing. England have had chances spurned by a lack of clinical finishing. Belgium have clinically finished both of theirs.

3:16 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Agreed. England's performance is pretty good. They need to improve with their finishing

3:17 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

Dier again just passed it to an unmarked Belgian. C'mon Gareth!

3:19 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

There's no need to play Dier at center back. Even if Maguire is dropped, Michael Keane and Tyrone Mings are a better option.

3:20 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

England corner as a mounted shot is blocked off a pass from Grealish

3:20 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Chillwell not well at the moment

3:20 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

Mount could have been better with his half-chance. That close to the goal, you would like the keeper to have to make a save.

3:21 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Ah - Mount was in there but shanked his effort. That's where England have faltered this evening.

3:21 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

I'm surprised Dier still gets a game for England. Surely there are better options than him

3:21 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

Absolutely. Dier is just an embarrassment for English football. He shouldn't be within miles of a place with the 3-Lions.

3:22 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Keep it in your nostrils mate!!!

3:23 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Chillwell is not well and on comes Saka

3:23 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Chilly off injured. Nor sure who replaced him

3:24 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Chilly doesn't seem able to continue, so we'll get another chance to see the Arsenal youngster Bakayo Saka - he's one of my favorite young England players right now.

3:24 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Steve will be happy to see ska on the pitch now

3:25 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

That long ball out to touch from KDB gets a thumbs up from the Jock in the booth. If that had been Chilwell's hoof, Och, the Humanity.

And Chilwell's not going to recover from that injury today. Saka on. Please be gentle you Frite-lovers.

3:25 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

No, not happy. I want him 100% to face Leeds in a week. For proper competition, not this lark.

3:26 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Agreed, Steve . We don't want Saka being waffled

3:27 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

The Big Match on Sunday.... The DAHLGREN BROTHER BATTLE is actually on NBCSN and NOT the Cock!

3:27 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

I'd have Dier as a squad player option at defensive middie but behind several others (e.g., Hendo, Kal Phillips).

3:27 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

TURN IT OFF

3:28 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Not sure if Bob will concur about Saka's playing status. Won't want top see him facing Leeds next weekend

3:28 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Lovely - I'm looking forward to it. Of course, according to my patented survival rubric, we don't need anything out of the match, so I'm just going to relax and enjoy it.

3:28 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

Good-God, KDB sauntered from the half-way line to Lukaku's pass without a single English player near him. HOW DOES THAT HAPPEN????

3:29 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Will United actually WIN a HOME game.... vs West Barcode Albion.... doubt it.... we will be too slow and won't break them down

3:29 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Kane with a chance... saved

3:29 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Axel Witsel Rose booked for a heavy metal challenge on Jack Grealish

3:30 PM

A pair of satoppage time minutes

3:31 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

only two minutes... GET IT FORWARD!!

3:31 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Just loses the ball...grrr

3:32 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

I don't think Gareth likes Grealish
I think he will take him off

I don't think he has been bad and I think he should stay on

3:32 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Ref doesn't call that foul on the edge of the box

3:32 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

STAY ON SIDE!!

Half time

3:33 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Kane dropping very deep to get the ball now - always a bad sign.

3:33 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Belgium is two up at the half , but in reality it's been a fairly even half. Belgium have been more clinical in front of goal

3:33 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Half-time: England have played reasonably well and have had more chances but Belgium have taken their chances more clinically. 2-0 Belgium.

3:34 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

Yeah, I hate it when Kane drops into the midfield.

Graelish hasn't been at his best, but he deserves another 25 minutes at least. It's not like Gareth has anyone in the squad he's named today that would be better. I'd like to see Sancho on for Mount. What I'd really like to have seen is someone to partner Kane. Why doesn't Southgate have that player in the squad?

3:38 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

All to do in the second half.

3:40 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Lukaku has done nothing....except save a goal off the line

We are off

3:49 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

I could see Belgian dropping the tempo in the second half, thinking that the job is done and allowing England back into it.

3:49 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

Winks for Hendo. Bold managing.

3:49 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Winks on for Hendo in the second half.

3:50 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

I'd like to see Foden and Sancho on at some point in the second half.

3:51 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Back for the second half. Not pleased with that change. That won't help England score

3:51 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

three of five subs allowed?

I hate Pep and Klopp complaining about the 5 subs...it is an unfair advantage for the bigger teams...they have two full line ups of superstars.....the other teams....don't have a full side

3:51 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Those two players would be a greater help

3:51 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

U.S. vs Panama on tomorrow at 3 on TUDN. Will anyone be around for that?

3:52 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Agreed. Not happy that they allow five subs in the NL. It's six if the match goes to ET

3:53 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Yeah - I should be around for some of it, David. If you post the thread, I should be able to chime in during my office hours.

3:54 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Nice move from Kane..... such a shame he wasn't in the box!

3:54 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

Exactly. Someone said earlier that he doesn't think Southgate likes Grealish. Doesn't trust Graelish is probably closer to the mark. But Southgate must be braver and trust that a mercurial talent like Graelish will come good more often than not. I may have not always thought that, but in the absence of more dangerous strikers and attacking players, he's got to be brave,

3:54 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

That was a foul by Grealish...England have sneakily moved the ball further back

3:55 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

A spursy clash as Toby booked for fouling Harry Kane just outside the box

Get the hook for Mount. That was an opportunity and it was spurned awfully. Sancho ASAP.

Mason Mount over this one. And there you see the gulf in talent between England and Belgium. Mertens executed his perfectly while Mount hoofed it high, wide and 'orrible.

Agreed - he should have been yanked immediately after that dreadful free kick and given a clip round the ear by Gareth.

Another free for a foul on Jack. Mason, guard for a Belgian break and give someone else a go.
