Champions League Wednesday!
I'm settling in to enjoy this afternoon's Champions League action, with a focus on the Liverpool v. Atalanta match. Of course, today's footie action is colored by the sad news of Diego Maradona's passing. No doubt there will be a fitting tribute to the man before the match this afternoon. In any case, this is a nice relaxing way to ease our way into Thanksgiving. Enjoy me if you've got time this afternoon. Cheers!

Yep, I'm looking forward to this. Liverpool and Leeds are the teams I am most enjoying watching this year.
Good afternoon Bob and Steve. Both these teams are exciting to watch, so it should be a great match.
Afternoon, guys - hope you're doing well today. We're doing a bit of pre-Thanksgiving Day cooking this afternoon in between the matches.
It's important to pay tribute to Maradonna and remember him as he was during the prime of his career, not as he was after retirement
Team news out of Anfield now:
Liverpool: Alisson; N Williams, R Williams, Matip, Tsimikas; Jones, Milner, Wijnaldum; Salah, Origi, Mané
Subs: Adrian, Koumetio, Clarkson, Cain, Kelleher, Robertson, Jota, Minamino, Firmino, Fabinho
Atalanta: Golini; Toloi, Romero, Djimisti; Hateboer, De Roon, Freuler, Pessina, Gosens; Gomez, Ilicic
Subs: Panada, Zapata, Miranchuk, Sportiello, Scalvini, Ruggeri, Rossi, Piccini, Mojica, Lammers, Palomino
Referee: C Del Cerro Grande (Spain)
Citeh one up at Olympiacos in stoppage time . As things stand they have clinched a place in the round of sixteen. Phil Foden with the goal, assisted by Sterling
Monchegladbach up by a barber shop quartet vs Waxtap. Gladbach fourpoins clear, but have not clinched a place in the knoackout stages
Teesiders one up vs the last placed Rams. Teesiders up to seventh place
A lot of these CL groups seem to be going to form. No surprises that Citeh have gone through to the next round. Liverpool will likely join them this afternoon and Bayern as well.
Evil Lions take the lead vs the Reading Railroad. Evil Lions up to ninth place and Reading Railroad, who were top recently now in sixth place
Very few surprises in the group stages. There may be some shockers once he knockout stages begin
The teams are now out on the pitch at Anfield
I suppose the United group is the most surprising with either Leipzig or PSG likely to fall.
How is Salah starting if he has COVID? Did he test negative recently?
That is a surprise . Those two played each other in the semis in August and one of them may parachute to the EL
Nice moment of silence or Diego observed.
They're off from Anfield.
I'm surprised by that, too.
Have you enjoyed your week off?
Long range shot from Ilicic high and wide for Atlanta
I'm not sure I know any of these Atalanta players. As is required of all European sides, there is the requisite Croatian up front, but I can't remember Ilicic from their WC campaign.
I hope Elneny is similarly available for us on Sunday.
That's a key match vs Wolves on Sunday. Hope the Gunners are at full strength for that match
Slow start for Liverpool so far. They're playing several of their squad players in order to rest a few. Yet, somehow Adrian still hasn't got a game tonight. He must really be cheesed off by that.
Real has taken the lead at Inter thanks to a spot kick from Hazard
I'm not enjoying watching Wolves this season, so I'm hoping that you lot can really do them over.
I've yet to see that thing that raised Atalanta's season last year. I think they're success is a Covid phenomenon.
Alison does well to turn around a near post shot from Goosens
Atalanta really threatening Liverpool now. They're knocking on the door.
Since Wolves sold Jota inexplicably, they're not the same.
I think Atalanta finished third in Serie A the last two seasons and that may be as far as they can go
Oh - now Gomez robs Williams and goes just a whisker wide of the mark with his drive. Liverpool living dangerously here.
Gomez wide for Atalanta as Neco Williams was dispossesed for the second time
Now Pool has a free kick
Goalkeeper forced to punch away the free kick , un der pressure from Rhys Williams
Free kick swung in by Milner and the keeper totally took his own man Goosens.
Not a Big Club takes the lead at Swansea and is now third from bottom, a point Coventry. Swans down to sixth place
The Reading Railroad ties it up at the Evil Den. The Railroaders now in fifth place
Liverpool just starting to get back into this one, but Salah's first touches have been very tentative. Not sure he's 100%.
He may still be feeling the effects of COVID despite testing negative
Great story from Clive Allen there about playing with Diego.
I predict a short day for Salah to ease him into readiness on Saturday. It's in defense that they need someone to return desperately.
Well, I saw a story on 60 Minutes about that very phenomenon the other night. Really scary stuff.
I'd never heard that one before from Clive. I'd tell that one every time I found myself in front of a mic if it were me.
Who have Liverpool got at the weekend?
I missed the part about Clive playing with Diego. When would that have been?
Yeah - and I'd have those boots bronzed and put on a pedestal as well.
Pool is at the AMEX in the early match on Saturday
The vaccine can't be made available soon enough.
He was talking about a testimonial match at Spurs for Ossie Ardiles in 1990.
Agreed that these are scary times and those bronze boots may be worth a Bob or two
Too right, Steve.
That must have been quite an occasion
I second that Steve. Supposedly , my father-in-law would be one of the first in our area to get it and rightly so
Great determination by Pool's young Greek player
In 1986 for Ossie Ardiles's testimonial. The Spud's midfield that day was Hoddle, Waddle, Ossie and Diego. Cor!
No real guile from Liverpool in midfield. They're playing a load of water carriers. They could really use a player like Shaquiri but I don't even see him on the bench.
I'm hoping for non-preferential availability of the vaccine for me by April.
WOW !That's what I call an all star midfield, Steve
Even an understrength Liverpool should be able to handle Brighton. They did really well to brush Leicester aside the other day.
Shaquiri might have slipped that one ring to rule them all on so that he's invisible.
Correct, Bob. For some reason, Klopp hasn't put out a full strength lineup. surely they should be able to do that and handle the Seagulls too.
That sounds about right, Steve. Presumably they'll start with emergency workers straight away in January and it will take a few months to get round to us. But we are in a higher risk category than those younger than we are. April sounds right.
I think we should be able to get a vaccine by April for sure. That day seemed light years away not so long ago
I think the first responders will get the vaccine in late December or early January followed by the elderly with pre existing conditions probably in January. I think April sounds right too.
Teesiders two up vs the Rams
Only one goal in the 3 PM CL matches and that was a spot kick. YIKES!
For some reason this match hasn't been as exciting as expected
That's my thinking, too, David. But I'll be first in line when they tell me it's available for me. I'm holding out hope for a really special summer, including perhaps the chance of seeing both of you gentlemen.
Liverpool still look a little jaded and disjointed, and most of the game is being played in their half. They haven’t had a single shot yet.
A really horrible attempt by Ilicic to win a penalty. Should be booked for that
Oh - that is poor from Ilicic - and outrageous dive. He should have been booked for that.
That would be great . Would love to be part of a reunion this Summer
LOL. A finger is not even to bring someone down. Martin Tyler says a finger is hardly a weapon of mass destruction.
Atalanta defenders nearly threw one away there but Salah wasn't sharp enough onto it.
Even if Salah isn't 100% he's still quite a presence on the pitch. Keeping the Italian's busy back there.
Teesiders three up vs the Rams
Good line from Martin.
I agree with Clive Allen. Klopp is going to rattle a few teacups at the half. He has a great deal of experience with that
Porto goes one up in Marseille. Porto all but through with Citeh to the knockout stages
Lew gives Bayern the lead vs Salzburg, their neighbors to the South. If this result holds then Bayern have won their group
Oh - Salah with a half-chance. Blasted it over with his right peg.
A minute of stoppage time
It's 0-0 at the end of a really dull half of few chances
That's half-time then - not a lot of action so far. In truth, a point will probably do Liverpool in their position, but they really need to push for a goal, as Atalanta look capable of nicking a cheap one.
We're away again in the second half at Anfield. Liverpool will be looking for quite a bit better, although Klopp hasn't gone to his bench yet.
Back for the second half which is hopefully more entertaining
Jota appears to be warming up now - he'd be an excellent change, although Klopp probably wanted to save him.
Coventry takes the lead vs Cardiff while the Swans tie it up vs Not a Big Club. Swans up to fourth while Not a Big Club is second from bottom. Coventry now three points clear of the drop zone
Two finals in the Championship. The Teesiders thrash the rock bottom Rams 3-0 and it finishes 1-1 between the Evil Lions and the Reading Railroad.
Teesdiers now in seventh place with the Reading Railroad in sixth
Kingsley Coman puts Bayern two up vs Salzburg
Ajax scores twice in two minutes to go to up vs Midjtylland. As things stand the best the Danish side can do is miraculously qualify for and EL spot. If Pool win then they are through to the Round of Sixteen
Bobby Chompers being readied as well.
Tsimikas booked for a rash tackle for Pool
GOAL !!! ILICIC GIVES ATLANTA THE LEAD OFF A NICE CROSS FROM GOMEZ
Liverpool is punished for not taking control of this match. 1-0 Atalanta.
GOAL! And that's what Liverpool would have been worried about. Atalanta have nicked one through the pesky Ilicic.
0-1!
Pool two points clear of both Ajax and Atalanta while Midjytlland eliminated from Europe unless things change
It's all change for Klopp at the hour mark - Firmino, Jota, Fabinho and Robertson.
Salah, Origi, Tsimikas and Winnie all off.
Real two up at ten man Inter.,, who had Vidal sent off for a second booking in the first half. Not exactly a shocker
Romero clears a cross from Robertson ffor a Pool corner
Better than half an hour left. If L'pool wake up, they're still in this one.
I think those are good changes from Klopp. He should have one change left
GOAL GOOSENS PUTS ATALANTA TWO UP
Wow. Defensive breakdown and now Liverpool do have a problem.
Bloody hell - it's a second for the Italian side through Gosens. That one was even better!
Cross from Gomez headed ac ross by Hatebor and Goosens scored easily at the far post
Nice solo run by Milner. I thought he was tripped in the D
Then Pool wins a corner
Freuler fouls Jota just outside the Atalanta box after a poor clearance off the Pool corner
Bayern down to ten men but that doesn't stop them goin g three up vs Salzburg. Sane with the goal
Ajax three up vs Midjtylland
Zapata comes on for the goalscorer Ilicic.
Porto two up at Marseille
Will Graham Potter be taking notes on this match for Saturday?
Another Colombian import Mojica comes on for the other goalscorer Gosens.
Did you see that Timo Werner miss from yesterday's match? Of course, I had to pick him for Golden Boot. I also picked Alvaro Morata a couple of years ago. I never learn my lesson.
LOL, Bob. No I didn't see that match. I will need to check that out
Still time for Liverpool to mount a comeback but they haven't really got going.
The Seagulls lack the quality of Atalanta and will probably face a full strength side. Hard to see them getting anything from the match
Morata is having a feast at the moment. Too late for you, but still pretty impressive.
Some more finals in the Championship
Bristol City 0 Hornets 0. That's not idle gossip
Coventry 1 Cardiff 0
Swans 1 Not a Big Club 1
The Roon booked for a foul on Jota
A pair of stoppage time minutes
It's over and Atalanta have surprisingly won 0-2
Now they're showing Bayern vs Salzburg. Bayern leads 3-1
That was a pretty dull match. Liverpool lose. They weren't ever in it. The handbrake is an overused description but dead on for that dreck.
That's it - a really limp performance from the champions that will really inspire some of their rivals. Klopp certainly has a lot to ponder now.
Nice chatting with you guys today. Enjoy the rest of your Wednesday and have a terrific Thanksgiving!
Cheers, Bob. Enjoy your Thanksgiving too. Great chatting and look forward to chatting with you this weekend
