England vs. Iceland...really?
I hate to be banging on about this, but I thought that the teams that could go forward in the Nations League have already been settled, and that in our group of 4, only Belgium go forward, and England, Denmark, and Iceland stay home. So why play a dead rubber, in a pandemic is my first question? Today, for instance, will we see the fringe players in the squad as a result of failing to qualify for the finals? What's going on? Maybe we'll know after 2:45pm today. See you then.

Good afternoon, Bob. Thanks for posting the thread. Thanks for getting us started and yes the match from Wembley iS a dead rubber match. Denmark has a chance of qualifying. They will if they win in Belgium ,otherwise, Belgium qualifies along with Spain and France
Spain qualified with a surprising 6-0 thrashing of Germany. Not sure what is going on with the Germans. One wonders if they took the match seriously
Afternoon, David. Steve's the one who set up this thread. I agree entirely with his thinking about this match. Is the NL a meaningful competition? No. Do England have any other business in it? No. Does it make any sense to hold a dead rubber match in the middle of a global pandemic? Not at all. But I'll be watching of course (sigh)...
I am still SHUNNING all of you!
My apologies to Steve. I need to read more carefully. I concur that is an unnecessary match to play during the middle of a pandemic. I guess Ukraine and Switzerland have then right idea as they're not playing their dead rubber match unless it's been cancelled due to COVID
Good afternoon, Dave. LOL!
That's my impression. I don't think the Germans allow a 6-nil thrashing with all their men on the pitch at the end. Only Bob's big Koch, and Tah could be arsed to pick up yellows.
That result was a message, and whether the message was that the German players don't give a toss about a silly made up competition, or if it's a "Yogi-Yogi-Yogi, RAUS, RAUS, RAUS!!!" vote, only time will tell.
The coverage has started on the Plus. Wembley looking great tonight.
Wales play tonight at home against Finland
A draw would be enough to be promoted to League A
They would also guarantee a playoff spot for the WC
Scotland can clinch the same thing with an away match at Israel
A win may not be required providing they match the Czech Rep's result at home to Slovakia
Slovakia or Israel will be relegated
Afternoon, Dave! How are you, mate?
England XI: Pickford, Walker, Dier, Maguire, Trippier, Saka, Rice, Mount, Foden, Grealish, Kane.
I am pleased there is only one sitting middie
I don't like that the line up could be considered
a 3-6-1
Shun
Great updates, Dave. Wales and Iceland will probably need a playoff in order to have any chances of qualifying
I have to pick up Kath during the second half
I could put the match on the phone but I like to listen to 5Live's commentary
That's definitely an attacking lineup. Should be fun to watch
5Live ahead of the computer
Team news out of the capital tonight:
England: Pickford, Trippier, Walker, Maguire, Dier, Saka, Rice, Mount, Grealish, Kane, Foden.
Subs: Keane, Sancho, Mings, Pope, Winks, Chilwell, Maitland-Niles, Calvert-Lewin, Abraham, D Henderson, Bellingham.
Iceland: Kristinsson, Hermannsson, Arnason, Ingason, Skulason, Bjarnason, Palsson, Saevarsson, Gudmundsson, Sigurjonsson, Bodvarsson.
Subs: Halldorsson, Runarsson, Eyjolfsson, Sampsted, Johannesson, Þorsteinsson, Baldursson, Gudjohnsen, Sigurdsson.
Anyone surprised that Spain thrashed Germany 6-0 yesterday
Poland and Holland are on ESPN2
Both are behind the Italians
Let's hope so, David - I'd like to see some goals tonight to liven up the occasion.
Iceland's first appearance at Wembley
A tribute to Ray Clemence and Nobby Stiles
Hopefully, it won't be a memorable appearance for Iceland. They lost to late goal their last two matches
Modern Day football....both teams changing their colors in Poland
White vs Black
Not really surprised to see that Spain 6-0 win over Germany. Part of it is the weird dynamic of the pandemic. And part of it is that the Germans are smart enough to know that the NL is meaningless.
Southgate dissing the NL. Dave will not be pleased
Nice tribute to Ray Clemence now - gone too young.
Pickford laid a Clenence shirt behind the goal....nice touch
Heard a great conversation with him taped in 2014 on TalkSport
Definitely that Spanish win is eye catching. I think it was either 1, a comment by the Germans on the viability of a competition in a pandemic, 2, a protest agains the continuing tenure of Low, or 3, a return of the Malaysian gambling syndicate knobbling the Germans to get a result that they can make big, big, money on.
Shun....all of you need to turn it off
We are off
They're off from Wembley in this dead rubber match
TURN IT OFF
Shunned
Good afternoon, Steve. Definitely reasons 1 and 2 and possibly number 3 as well
Back in the day, I was always a Clemance for England vote. I had not forgiven Shilton for allowing Lato to mug him and ensure that England didn't qualify for the World Cup. I still haven't, and I believe that had Ray been in goal we'd have qualified, crap weather in Katowice be damned.
Tielemans has given Belgium the lead sv the Danes
Dave's really anxious to see if Iceland get relegated tonight (yawn)
Come on England....get the ball in the box!!!
They are going to pack it in...so get the ball IN
Shun
Tielemans is far too good a player to be playing for Leicester, surely.
As things stand, Beglium will France and Spain in the four team tournament
Foden turns quick but not a good pass
Poland take a fifth minute lead
Foden tries to play one through to Mount and earns a corner from it. Bring up the big boys!
Nice run and shot by the Pole....not Lewan
Grealish does well to squeeze a ball through to Mount who spins but has a shot blocked.
OK, just one last thing. Hating the concept of a meaningless competition in a pandemic is not the same as not supporting England. My personal interest is having Saka available safe and sound on Sunday
Steve, that match was before my time. As someone who started following after that, there was little to choose between the two keepers in the early 80s. I'm glad I didn't have to make that decision. Shilton should have been replaced as England keeper long before 1990.
So many times these days, a ball goes forward to a man who passes right back to where it came from...why not turn and take the space
England almost in... offside by Saka
Oh - Saka got into a great position there but was flagged offside. All England now.
Saka off-side. Get him off the pitch!
That's true, Steve. Supporting a team and a competition are two different things. It will be an interesting match between your team and Bob's
I agree about the pandemic but I don't think the Nations League is meaningless
It is better than meaningless friendlies. As I said, it is the League Cup.... I want to win it
Nail-bitingly so. You read that Mo' Elneny tested positive for the virus that's going through the Egyptian camp?
Rent-A-Grouchy Scot today doesn't like how picky the officiating is today. I agree.
No I didn't know about the Egyptian players . That's horrible news about El Neny. Wonder if the other Egyptians playing in the Prem have tested positive too
The League Cup has a storied history; it's part of English footballing lore. The Nations League has no such standing among football fans. It's much closer to those preseason "Amsterdam Tournament" things. When UEFA inevitably decide to can it in the next few years in favor of some other nonsense, no one will ever remember that it ever existed.
Salah tested positive twice
Saka down. Sub him off!!!
Saka down hurt but I think he is making more of it
Sefarsson booked for nasty foul on Saka . Steve will not be pleased
It is amazing how often English broadcasters hire Scottish color guys. In this case, it's Stevie Nichol on the mic, although the only reason that I recognize his voice is because of his time with the Revvies.
League Cup didn't have a tradition in 1960
I really can't believe how all of you think about this competition
I'm done complaining
All that matters is that I like it
Walker gets his habitual yellow, despite Grouchy-Scot's verdict that is was Harsh.
Steve Agreeing with Steve. I agree too. This ref is blowing for players practically just being on the pitch
This is ESPN from Bristol, Connecticut
That's what I was fearing, Dave. Didn't realize that about Salah
IS that idle gossip from Connecticut?
Bring back the Milk Cup and the Fairs Cup and the Anglo-Italian Cup as long as we're justifying irrelevances.
Shun
I think Bob would add the JPT. It started as the Group Cup in 1983
England were better against Belgium
They have done nothing
I don't care that teams sit back.... put in the danger area more often then!
The one that I would like resurrected is the Home Nations tournament. But only after fans are let in to watch. Those games against the Jocks are favorite memories of mine.
I remember the Milk Cup is what the League Cup was called during my high school years and I think the Fairs Cup is what the UEFA Cup was called.
England need to create more!!!!!!
Iceland break with quite a few men... England don't attack back as soon as the won the ball back
I hope That fans will be allowed by the time England plays Scotland at Wembley this Summer
Yeah - I miss the Home Nations tournament. Those used to be some of the only live matches we'd get.
Free kick.... ONE NIL ENGLAND
Dec Rice opens up his England account
GOAL !!!! DECLAN RICE HEADS IN A FREE KICK FROM PHIL FODEN TO GIVE ENGLAND THE LEAD
Yes! Declan Rice nods home his debut goal in England colors. Johnno will be delighted.
1-0 England!
Useless header really....went off his shoulder!
And though before my time, the Anglo-Italian one is notorious because of how seriously dirty the Inter contingent was. And how thin the veneer of sportsmanship of the English players was when it kicked off. Highlights of those are well worth a view.
Grealish does take up space given to him
Swing a miss by Mount... Saka almost scores
Oh - how was that not a second for England?!
OH! Great save by the keeper from Saka off a pass from Grealish
Saka should have buried that one
Rice with the breakthrough. And almost immediately, Saka, who should not still be on the pitch's effort is sharply saved.
Grealish is definitely playing his way into the side with these performances. Although, he really needs to lose the Alice band.
Who was the last Hammer to score for England?
Defoe?
I don't know
100% lose that daft hairband.
Jonas Wind ties it up for the Danes in Belgium . Danes through if they win
Did he sing, "Sing Little Birdie?"
Two nil.... another Londoner scores.... Mount doubles England's lead
2-0 England as Mount taps home after another great move from England!
Cracking finish from Mount! 2-0 England.
It was Matthew Upson against Germany
Before that was Joe Cole
Correct answer, Chairman Mao!
I never mind these matches against inferior opposition. It's always been part of a qualifying campaign. You show up against a minnow and do a professional job. I don't know why people complain about the presence of teams like Iceland.
Finland down to ten men after 12 minutes in a must win in the Principality
West Ham goal scorers for England.... all you have to thing of is the 1996 World Cup Final.....they scored the lot!!!
I think so too. And every few generations, these minnows belch up a decent opposition..., Bulgaria, Romania, the Danes, etc.
This is England last match of 2020(Good Riddance)
They're next matches is in March....3 World Cup qualifiers
The WC draw is on Dec 7
OH, I thought Foden was in for a third.
Wilson gives the Dragons the lead in Cardiff
Speaking of Wales....what about the news coming out of Wrexham!!!
Back from diaper duty . I did see the second England goal and made it back to see Foden nearly make it 3-0
Oh - now Foden is in from a pass by (whoever would have expected it?) Harry Maguire. England are playing a bit like Holland in the 70s now.
Saka dispossessed. Sub him off!!!
Is the World Cup still scheduled for December 2022 in Qatar?
I just read the comments I missed . What happened in Wrexham?
Yes
Now Maguire is a winger!
The WC starts on Nov20th, Elizabeth's and my wedding anniversary . The final is on Dec 18th, the day after my birthday
They have two new owners
Ryan Reynolds and the bloke from It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia
Pledge a lot of money and global support
I'd be surprised if two actors can lift the fortunes of Wrexham. They're rich, but they don't have the wealth to sustain a club into the Prem.
Don't like that at all - I'll miss out on most of it because of the schedule.
Wrexham's first game after announcement....an away win at Hartlepool
Not good by Saka...modern day ball/cross there
I agree with Stevie N
Saka's ball into the area finds no one. Sub him off!!!!!
Italy one up in Bosnia. As things stand they will be in the four tournament regardless of what happens in the match on the Deuce
Oh - Mount should have been able to find Kane there in the middle. Nice try with the corner routine though.
Oh - now Foden produces a nice save out of the keeper. Nearly 3-0.
Christiansen does well to turn around a shot from Foden
I won't....I'm retired!!
I think there time zone is +3 from England
Hope they can improve Wrexham's fortunes. They definitely need to be higher up than the fifth tier of English footie, where they have been since 2008
Oh - another great move as England are rampant. Kane nearly squeezes another in.
France, Belgium, Italy and Spain...not a bad final four
No comment needed....I know what you are going to say
Kane almost in for number three....glad he didn't fall down
They are the third oldest club in the world!!
So eight hours ahead of us? I don't know if that will help or not.
Just wide again.... rack up the goals England
Some of these English chances have to go in. Would it be 6-0 already if most had found the tsrget?
Oh - Kane with a curler that never quite curls enough.
It really should be 6-0 - Iceland are pants.
Saka with a shoulder barge. Send him off!!!!
Dave you are right about Qatar. Bob it will be tough to watch on the weekdays. You will probably need to DVR the matches. That's eight hours ahead of the East Coast
Yeah, this era Iceland is not the WC qualifying version of before.
You are right, it about 11:30 in Qatar
I guess prime time games would be noonish
Early morning matches, afternoon matches
Works for me.... retirement is great
What are you all worried about. First round of Qatar in Fred-town, watch it live, sleep in or catch it up later.
Grealish picks up a free kick now in shooting distance.
Iceland playing as if they players are frozen
Every time I see Trip standing over the ball...I flash back to his free kick in the WC Semi Final!!
I remember Tom, Matt and I going absolutely nuts!!
Poor effort from Saka. Fill in the blank.
Well, my fear is that the group stage will be while the semester is still going on and then the latter stages will conflict with holiday celebrations. It's a terrible time for a tournament.
That's right Dave. Retirement really working well
Oh right. I block that out because it's so annoying.
December in WNY....yikes!
You will be able to watch matches during the Thanks giving break which is the first week of the group matches
Well, at least being snowed in as an excuse from work is plausible.
If Wrexham is the worlds third oldest club then Notts County number two? They like Wrexham need to be doing better than the fifth tier of English footie
Poland one up at the half vs the Dutch. Italy look like joining France and Spain
Oh - Kane was nearly in there for the header but he's penalized for a shove.
Half-time - England well on top here and playing well. 2-0 - should be 6-0.
England two up vs Iceland at the half. It would have been more but for poor finishing
Don't come back today Saka.

Scotland behind in Israel
They will be overtake by the Czechs
Did you see the tree they brought into the Rockefeller Center?
Very sparse looking!!!
Pretty much fits 2020
Right, chaps - I'm heading home. I'll see you on the other side.
No changes for England!
Iceland changes their keeper
Thanks for posting the schedule , Dave. I'll be missing the early match for sure during the group stages. I won't be up at 4 AM. I will need to DVR that
The second half is underway from Poland
Wales score an early second half goal... A great goal by Daniel James....remember him.
We are off for the second half under the Arch
I will be heading out in about ten minutes
Lino's corset needs tightening.
As well as being underway from Wembley
Cheers, Bob. Look forward to chatting soon
Promotion and a playoff if needed for Wales as they are playing against the ten men Finns
Serbia four up vs Russia as the Russians would have finished top of their group with a win
D 3.14 wins a Dutch free kick just outside the Poland box
Free kick headed on by two Poles then just wide for the Dutch at the far post
Iceland are down to ten men
my video is very jumpy all of a sudden
Czechs two up vs Slovaks. Now the Scots need a comeback more than ever
That was nothing. Saka went down very easily. Get him off.
Saeversson sent off for a second booking. It seemed harsh, but this ref has been very picky
Dier....straight into the wall
Belgium retake the lead... Lukaku
Czech Rep 2 up....meaning the Scots need to win...still one down
Of course, CR in England and Scotland's group
The Chunk gives Belgium A 2-1lead vs Denmark and it appears that Belgium and Italy will join Spain and France
N o I take the lead but they are relegated anyway because of points awarded by UEFA for a cancelled Covid match
Sod Kane. Give Saka a break and sub him.
That's it for me
Off to pick up the missus
Talk to you guys at the weekend
Northern Ireland takes the lead vs Austria
Cheerio Dave.
Cheers Dave. Great chatting. Look forward to chatting with you this weekend
Hungary takes the lead vs Turkey as the Magyars are on route to winning their group
Just wide from the Icelander. Almost a goal. Pick it up England.
Norway takes the lead in Austria. Norway needs another goal to win the group over Austria on head to head meetings
Harry Kane and NOT Abel to score as a close range shot is blocked
Flappy turns a round a shot from 3.14
Pukki scores for the ten men Finns as they now trail the Welsh 2-1
Italy go two up in Bosnia and are are all but through to the four team tournament
Dave is lucky he didn't see those subs. Not very attacking against 10 men. Disappointing from Southgate.
The Chunk scores his second goal of the match as Belgium now leads the Danes 3-1. Belgium all but through to the four team tournament
Stevie Nicholl is losing his mind with Southgate's caution.
Serbia five up vs Russia
Wijnaldum wide open from two yards out as his header hits the post. The offside flag was raised, but he should have still scored
Agreed, Steve. It's a dead rubber match, sop why not make attacking changes instead of defensive changes. Dave would be none too pleased for sure
Looks like Bellingham and Abraham stripping off for action.
Another Dutch change and a shot from 3.14 is deflected into the side netting for a corner
Grealish fouled just outside the Iceland box
Not Bellingham. Looks like Sancho.
Bringing those two on is more like it
Like for like as Sancho is on for Grealish and another like for like as Tammy Abraham on for Harry Kane
The Dutch have won a penalty. D 3.14 to take. He score with a rocket of a penalty in the upper 90 and it's 1-1 in Poland
GOAL !!! PHIL FODENSCORES HIS FIRST ENGLAND GOAL GOES THREE UP. NICE ONE TWO BETWEEN SANCHO AND SAKA THEN SANCHO PASSED TO FODEN FOR A WELL PLACED FINISH
