US vs. Panama.... in Vienna.
After yesterday's disappointing England loss to Belgium, there's a chance today that the USA can life our spirits. We held our own against the Welsh recently which would ordinarily make me hopeful but it looks like Coach B might start a lineup and some debutants we've not see before. I hope he gets it right. It's never fun to look second-best to CONCACAF rivals if you can call their team of baseball failures rivals. Let's get this right and beat them. See you on the blog.

Good Afternoon, Steve. Thanks for getting us started. I have the pre match on TUDN
OK, The lineup isn't as worrisome as I read predictions about this morning.
Steffen - Dest, Miazga, Ream(!), Cannon -
Musah, Adams, McKennie - Reyna, Giaocchini, Llanez.
Dest and McKennie are very welcome sights. Brooks is on the bench and I'd have preferred his inclusion instead of Ream who is simply woeful. Adams is coming back from a long-term injury but on his day is very effective moving the ball around and sighting open forwards. I want to see more of Gioacchini, and Llanez, but I'm happy that boy Reyna gets another start. And happy that Lletget who spurned perfectly good opportunities against Wales is sitting today.
Hi David, it's on FS1 in English if you have that channel.
Did you take the Keanoorant quiz?
They're playing in the stadium that hosted Mexico vs South Korea on Saturday
Panama's team is equally young. Gone are some of the guys I would recognize.
I haven't taken the quiz yet. I should if I'm a true United fan
I will change to FS1 . Thanks for the tip.
I'll Ream Tim if he gifts any goals two Van Halen's lads. Unlike Van Halen , he will be singing anything but bass
Thye're off from Austria
Hiya, guys - just checking in at the beginning of the match. I'll be a bit in and out since I'm doing office hours. Hoping for a good win for us over the Canal Dwellers today.
Good afternoon, Bob. How is your Monday? We wish for the same
I'm very interested in the 3 forwards to see if any of them can get on the scoresheet.
Llanez looking troubled by a tackle that didn't seem too bad. It's a knee on knee so it hurts, but he's making a meal of it.
Ulysses Llanez off for treatment after a clash of knees with Armando Copper. Was it really accidental?
OH! Inches wide by Giochinni off a ruin and pass from Reggie Cannon
BUGGER! PNAMAM TAKES THE L;EAD ON THEIR FIRST ATTACK OF THE MATCH BALL PLAYED WIDE LEFT THEN CROSSED IN FOR FAJARDO TO HEAD PANAMA IN TO THE LEAD WITH A FREE HEADER
Doing well, David. Busy day, though - just trying to get it all done before the break next week.
Gio should have done better with the pass from the wing.
Chrissakes, Panama have a headed goal from a cross that neither Miazga or Ream dealt with. That's very worrying again that Ream was in the vicinity of that mistake.
Miazga fouls Fajardo just outside the U.S. box
Free kick from Murillo well over
Exactly, Steve. Coach B needs to take note of our liabilities. Isn't that the purpose of friendlies?
Hang in there, Bob. The end of the week will be here soon around with the end of the international break
I think I'm right in saying that Ream has participated in both of Fulham's recent relegations, and Bolton's as well. But rather than the dustbin of history, Coach Beerholder has made him a cornerstone of his team, captain today.
Bloody Hell. Coach B better Ream his defensive liability.
Not sure if Ream was with the Cottagers in 2013, but did in 2013. I think he was with Bolton in 2011 for their relegation. I'll anorak that
Of course, the big loss for us today is Pulisic's recent injury ruling him out. But to leave Brooks out instead of Ream may prove more costly.
Dest is not getting as forward as he did against the Welsh. He needs to get those balls in that feed our forwards. Ooooh, just like that one he fired in that was a bit too close to their keeper.
McKennie sloloms through a maze of Panamanians before laying off a ball to Musa that provoked Panama into fouling him on the edge of the box. Free kick and it looks like Reyna's lining it up.
WAY HAY! GIO REYNA TIES IT UP FOR THE U.S. HIS FIRST GOAL FOR THE USMNT. TOOK IT FROM THE D KEPT IT LOW BUT CURLED IT AND FOOLED THE KEEPR
Fabulous to see Gio on the scoresheet - he's definitely one for the future.
Oh, that's special from Gio Reyna. He just belts the ball low around their wall and into the corner. Great goal, welcome equalizer. 1-1. It's back on.
The history on Ream:
Was signed the January transfer window of the season Bolton were relegated. HArd top blame him entirely for that relegation. Then played three seasons for them in the Championship, followed by three seasons in the Championship with the Cottagers, followed by promotion then relegation then promotion and now this season possible relegation
WAY HAY ! THE U.S TAKES a 2-1 LEAD
gIOACHINNI SCORED ON THE REBOUND OFF A SHOT fumbled by the keeper. Thanks keep. More of the same please
2-1! Reyna's shot is spilled to Gioacchini who has the easiest of tasks and puts the ball in. Right place at the right time. I like it.
OH! Nearly a spectacular goal by Gio Reyna Chipped the clueless keeper and it lands on top of the net off a pass from DFest off the U.S. high press. Actually tipped over., accidentally.
Thanks David, I want to be fair with Ream, but I am very unimpressed.
Gio with another shot that nearly catches their keeper out.
WAY HAY! 3-1 U.S. GIOACHINNI WITH HIS SECOND GOAL OFF THE SHORT CORNER
We've turned it around, I see - wahay!
Great hustle from McKennie who is able to rescue the ball on the byeline. Miazga heads it across goal for a goalpoacher's delight and Gioacchini's second. Fabulous.
The corner eluded everyone, but Dest passed to Tyler Adams , who played a slide rule pass to McKennie , whose cross was headed across the goal by Miazga and headed n from a yard out by Giachinni
If you look at the clubs our players play for and their players it's a surprise we're not winning by more
It's really obvious Miazga showing why he didn't make it with Chelsea despite sill being on their books
Panama making the U.S. look like Bayern We're really out classing them
Gio Reyna tackled for a corner on a U.S. counter
Tim Ream is not my first choice to be putting in crosses although that one nearly came off
I'm very excited that the Panamanian's chief tactics in the past, their track stars on the wings, and a tricky-footed guy in the middle who can sell a free and then take a pretty decent free, is not part of this new generation's repetoire. I don't know if this is a genuine turnover of players, or if they just didn't bring the guys we've seen before. I hope the former because even Coach Beerholder's MLS based squads can handle this.
Panama doesn't have anyone playing for Juve, Barca , Valencia, Leipizg, or Anderlecht.
Nice run by Mussa , but the pass was to close to the keeper, who dove to gather
I know that their manager , Thomas Christiansen has plenty of experience coaching in Europe, so he may be changing the style of play
Giochinni fouled just outside the box. More clumsy than malicious
Miazga reached further than his talent could take him with his decision to play for Chelsea. He's been loaned out nearly the whole time and I don't think even Fwank can see a place for him there. He's at Anderlecht and good luck to him.
This time the free kick from Gio Reyna is well over
Argyle one up vs Pompey. Dave will not be pleased
Dest has a shot blocked into the side netting for a corner off a pass from Gio Reyna off a run and pass from Mussa
We look dangerous every time they lose possession in our half. Our breaks are devastating without much of a final touch. But I love watching us stream forward.
Murillo booked for a foul from behind on Mussa on the counter
Agreed, Steve. It's been great to watch
It think Tim ream has had more difficult matches in the Championship than tonight
A minute of stoppage time
Panama's fouling in desperation and frustration. The ref needs to keep his yellow handy right now and snuff that out.
The U.S. has come from behind to lead 3-1 at the half
3-1 at the half. I couldn't be happier. More of that please.
Really happy to see that we're putting the hammer down against the Panamanians.
Coach B will probably want to bring on some subs, but I wouldn't change a thing. Maybe, just maybe, bring on Konrad for Gioacchini after a while to boost Konrad's confidence after he missed that sitter against the Welsh.
I love this three man midfield of Musa, Adams, and McKennie against this opponent. They've been excellent, and given Gio Reyna, and Gioacchini the platform to express themselves. Dest and Cannon have been great too.
In the second half, I'd like to see Llanez score. It was his shot that Gioacchini finished off for his first. But he needs to show me that against this level opposition, he can put it into the net.
Agreed with your assessment , Steve. That's exactly how I saw it and what I would do if I were Coach B.
The second half is underway
More thuggish play from Panama . They need more than just a lecture
Here we go with the start of the second half. Don't let up boys. This could be epic history against a team we'll face again. It would be good to have them thinking about this for years.
Zak Steffen has been getting plenty of catching practice from the Panama crosses
Murillo with a cross deflected on to the top of the net for a Panama corner
Gio Reyna on a solo run on they break off a panama corner, but the final pass was off
Weston McKennie booked for a two footed challenge. Lucky not to be sent off for that
Agreed. It will take a stronger refereeing performance to keep them from from dishing out a bit of aggro.
Another thrilling break and Gio's cross is scrambled away.
Panama offside off their free kick
Now Gioachinni booked for a forearm. That looked the right call
Now Gio Reyna concedes a free kick
Yeah, McKennie might have lost his temper with what the Panamanians have dished out. And now Gioacchini caught a guy for a yellow. We need to stay calm. This one is already won. We don't need to get in a scuffle with these guys.
Free kick easily cleared
Agreed. The sooner this one is over the better. Also some subs should be made soon
Long range shot from Gabby Torres high and wide.
Two more changes for Panama
I don't want to see Llanez give away the ball cheaply when we're streaming forward.
Maybe he's the one to sacrifice so that Konrad or Soto can get a chance to get going against poor opposition.
Another goal would settle some Panamanian hash. They're better organized this half but they're still pretty poor footballers.
It might be time to sub McKennie off. He's getting the treatment now and may lash out. Otasowie would be a good sub for him.
Looks like Tim Weah came on for the injured Llanez
WAY! HAY! PENALTY TO THE U.S. DEFINITE HAND BALL
GIOACHINNI UP IN AN TTEMPT TO COMPLETE HIS HAT-TRICK. A REALLY POOR PENALTY IS EASILY SAVED
That penalty looked like ones I took back in the day
Gioacchini to take. Oh that was horrible. Straight down the middle. No technique.
Gabby Torres with a shot that nearly clears the stadium from six yards out
Rich Ledezma , of PSV , on for Gio Reyna
Mussa down from a challenge off the field
I'm really disappointed. If that had gone in it might have killed the fight in these guys. Their fouling will continue.
Then Reggie Cannon concedes a free kick
About bloody time. Panama player booked a cheap shot on Gioachinni
Our forwards need to pull their fingers out and score. With Reyna off the pitch now, it will be important for the backs to get forward and provide openings.
We also need to stop cheaply conceding possession
Johnny not having as successful a time as Adams in bottling up the middle for us.
Gabby Torres booked for a nasty foul on McKinnie
Another deserved yellow for Panama. I'd forgotten how dirty these also rans were.
Reggie Cannon tackled for a corner off a long ball from Tim Ream
Close range shot from McKinnie blocked then a U.S. foul called
Agreed, Steve. They're really dirty
Bugger. That was a perfect delivery of a corner that we just couldn't scramble into the net when it hit the floor.
I think Panama's changes are merely to have players on the field who haven't been booked yet
Lleget on for Mussa and Soto for Gioachinni.
Soto plays in the Dutch Erstedivisie on loan from the Canaries
It's hard not to give the MOM to Gioacchini, but my MOM is McKennie. He's been everywhere and magnificent.
OH! Nice pass from Seb Soto, but a shame that Tim Weah's final touch let him down o else it would have been 4-1
BUGGER! THEN FAJARDO GETS HIS SECOND OF THE MATCH SECONDS LATER OFF A PASS FROM BROWNE. SCORED PAST THE STRANDED ZAK STEFFEN. BACK TO 3-2
Chris Richards, of Bayern, on for Miazga
Shit. Now Gioacchini's missed pen might play a Big factor.
It's between several players for MOTM. It's between Gioachinni, McKinnie, and Gio Reyna
Dest is a possibility for MOTM too
WAY HAY! SEB SOTO HGEADS IN A GOAL ON HIS DEBUT TO MAKE IT 4-2. NICE RUN AND PASS FROM REGIIE CANNON AND GREAT CROSS FROM LEDEZMA
Yes! Soto finishes off Ledezma's tempting cross. 4-2.
It's still a flattering score for Panama. We've battered them and served them up with chips.
That's a much more secure lead with ten minutes remaining if stoppage time is included
Agreed, sSteve. But for sloppy passing in the final third we
d be up by five or six goals
Dest wins a U.S. corner
Corner from Ledezma headed wide for a goal kick
Lletget is unconvincing in front of goal. It keeps dropping for him instead of somebody who would consistently rattle them in.
Cross from Tim Weah cleared for a corner.
YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!! CORNER FROM WEAH PLAYED SHORT TO REGGIE CANNON AND HIS NEAR POAST CROSS IS HEADED IN BY LLEGET. NOW 5-2
Oh me of little faith. Finally Lletget gets his goal. And it's a very difficult header that finally gets in. Well done to him. He kept trying.
Panama wins a corner off of McKinnie
Lleget like the little jet engine that kept trying and never gave up. Ivor would be proud
Ledezma is impressing me too. His delivery is good, and he takes dangerous corners to et on the end of.
An LOB blogging duo of stoppage time minutes
Brilliant delivery by Ledezma again find Soto for his second. Fantastic.
WAY HAY ! NOW 6-2. FAR POST HEADER FROM SEB SOTO WITH A BRWCE ON HIS DEBUT. GREAT CROSS FROM LEDEZMA AND A FART POST HEADER FROM SOTO IS IN THE LITTLE GAP BETWEEN THE KEEPER AND THE POST
It's over as the U.S. thrash Panama 6-2 and it could have been by much more
Good lord! 6-2 - wallop!
Great result for the USMNT.
Thanks for keeping the home fires burning on the LOB this afternoon.
I'm really happy to have run up the score at the end. We'll face these chumps in WC qualifying or the Gold Cup again, and it will be good to have that in the back of their minds for a while.
I'm very happy. This version of Panama is not good, and we played them off the pitch for the majority of the game.
I loved how McKennie in the face of major provocation bossed the match. I loved how Dest and Cannon got forward and broke their midfield. I loved how Gioacchini and Soto took their chance and scored multiples. I loved how devastating we looked flying down the pitch with Reyna and McKennie at the head of break after break.
I did not like the breakdown in defense against forwards of very little quality that resulted in their goals.
But Wahey, we looked better against Panama than we have in years. 6-2! Party time.
Cheerio David, thanks for the company.
Oh and Gio Reyna was terrific. He's better than his dad was at this age for sure.
