The Third Round Continues....
I'm up with the chickens to follow this morning's FA Cup Third Round action. It's hard to choose which match to watch, but I've settled for the time on Everton v. Rotherham, although I may move over to Chorley v. Derby based on MUR's recommendation from yesterday. I hope you'll join me this morning.
812 Comments:
The preliminaries are over and we're away at Goodison Park in this morning's clash.
Rotherham have struggled this year in the Championship, so it's no surprise to see the Toffees dominating the early proceedings.
James is definitely Everton's playmaker today, trying to pull the strings in just about every move.
GOAL! The Turkish international Ceck Tosin rounds the keeper and slots home for a welcome goal for him after returning from injury.
Cardiff have taken the lead early on away to Forest in the all-Championship match-up.
Norwich are already 2-0 up on L1 opponents Coventry City.
I've switched over to that match between non-league Chorley and a depleted Derby County. Here is the team news:
Chorley: Urwin, Birch, Halls, Leather, Baines, Tomlinson, Shenton, Newby, Calveley, Hall, Cardwell.
Subs: Miller, Henley, Roberts, Malakai, Putnam, Smith, Marah, Reilly.
Derby County: Yates, Bardwell, Jinkinson, Solomon, Williams, Bateman, Aghatise, Liam Thompson, Cresswell, Hutchinson, Duncan.
Subs: Ibrahim, Christie, Rutt, Ebosele, Rogers, Seb Thompson, Cybulski, Sykes-Kenworthy.
All eleven Derby players are making their senior debut today. Should be fascinating.
Decent looking ground for a non-league side - looks more like a L2 set-up to me.
We're away at Chorley then - this is probably the biggest chance for a non-league upset today.
The small Chorley staff must have made a super-human effort to get this ground ready for today's match, with a significant snowfall overnight.
GOAL! That's the goal that the Chorley faithful would have been roaring for if they were here today. A corner swung over, there is some head tennis and Matt Yates finally nods home from close range.
1-0 Chorley!
The giant-killing is on!
Chorley are in the sixth level of English football, so four levels below Championship opponents Derby.
It's clear what Chorley are all about today, hoisting long balls into the area at every occasion. The Derby kids are really struggling to clear.
Derby haven't really looked like getting back into this one.
Goals in all of the early morning FA Cup fixtures now:
Boreham Wood 1 Millwall 1
Everton 1 Rotherham 0
Luton 1 Reading 0
Norwich 2 Coventry 0
Forest 1 Cardiff 0
Chorley 1 Derby 0
Oh - off the crossbar there for Chorley! Nearly 2-0.
Morning Bob
I am here
Way to get us started
I have 5Live going and not sure what game to tune in
I am wearing my 1966 England #6 white shirt that just arrived yesterday. I now have the white and red shirts
I just dialed in Boreham Wood/Millwall.... the split second the hosts should have tied it up
Big chance blasted over
Rotherham have equalized at Goodison!!
All of these matches go to extra time and pens today...no replays this season...I hope it is JUST this season
I'm back with a bagel and a second cuppa for the second half now.
Morning, Dave - how are you this weekend?
I am doing well... today's date sucks tho...30 years ago today was when I lost my mom...THIRTY YEARS!!
That's a sad anniversary, Dave - I'm really sorry about that. She was a lovely lady.
Thanks mate....she sure was
Can't believe how long ago it was!
I have tuned in Ever/Roth and Chorley/Der on my computer and have the Bore/Millwall on telly
Don't Rotherham normally wear red? Why are they wearing white against Everton
Chorley look good for this lead. Derby not really offering much urgency at this point.
I have no idea why Rotherham have made that decision. They've had a difficult season in the Championship so perhaps they're in need of a change of scenery?
Good morning Bob and Dave. Just woke up and am watching Chorely vs Derby County
Oh - Cardwell had a chance there from the header. Should have at least tested the keeper with it.
With all these U23s playing in these matches....it brings to mind how the FA wouldn't let United delay or put in a youth team to play the third round when they were in the World Club Championship in 99/00
United were the reigning champs... had won the Cup 4 times in the 90s
That is when the Cup started to lose it's luster....the managers started to take it less seriously.
I HATE IT
Morning David
Everton get their first corner of the day....in the 73rd minute....they don't score from it
Morning, David - great to have you on board for FA Cup Saturday.
Millwall double their lead at Boreham Wood
Oh - another big chance for Chorley. Great cross over and Cardwell should have scored with his header.
I have turned on the Forest/Cardiff match instead of Millwall
I agree with you, Dave. That's when theFA Cup started to be trumped by all of the other more lucrative competitions, including phony baloney ones like the World Club Championship.
That said, I don't see any reason why clubs shouldn't be able to run out the Academy kids if they choose - and face the wrath of supporters if they lose.
I'm delighted to see that the Crawley v. Leeds match is being televised tomorrow morning. At first, it looked as if it wasn't going to be. But it seems as if ESPN+ is showing every single game! Wow!
I wonder how they are going to do the draw on Monday
As I said yesterday, the 4th and 5th Round draws will be made. I was thinking they might draw the 4th round as normal. Rash of those ties are numbered 1-32. The 5th round draw would be drawn just as numbers. Do you think that's how it will be?
So can Chorley say they have made the FIFTH ROUND draw!!
Technical difficulties with the thread for Goodison
Just about finished brewing some coffee. I think I called a Choreley win when we were texting yesterday
I'm still not quite sure why Roon isn't on the bench today - and why Dean Smith didn't lead the Villa side yesterday.
Have they got COVID?
You did, indeed, David. Thanks for highlighting this match. After tuning into the first fifteen minutes of the Everton v. Rotherham match, I switched over to this one on your recommendation.
Chorley almost in again...saved off the line
Back at Goodison...finally.... inside the 6 minutes
I think Dean Smith and his staff didn't lead the teams out due to contract tracing. Probably the same for the Rams coaching staff
Yes... the Derby squad has COVID issues. Their entire first teams squad and coaches are isolating
Everton retake the lead inside the last five minutes
VAR checking for offside
The under 23s playing for the Rams and Villa so they don't have to forfeit the match. That shouldn't be the case next season
Great aerial view of Victory Park there.
VAR looking at inches.... it has been called off
I hate VAR
Everyone says offside is black and white....it isn't!!
There was NO advantage there
To be honest I was a bit lucky referring everyone to this match. I will watch the replay later today since I slept in late
I think VAR should be used when a player is well offside and just missed. A player that is a toe nail ahead is not gaining any advantage
Also, as I always say, there are two points of offside. There is also when the ball is kicked! I never see any shots of that one! It is always the front line! When does it matter.... is it when the ball is touched by the foot, when the foot indents the ball or when the ball leaves the foot
Surprised to see the Toffees being held by Rotherham , who missed their last three league matches due to COVID. That's why they're in the Championship drop zone
More surprising as the Toffees have put out a decent lineup
Agreed about offside. I don't see how an attacker is gaining an advantage by being an inch offside. That's the purpose of the rules
Looks like a light dusting of snow in Choreley but several inches on the hills
Extra time here we come at Goodison
It's over at CR. The Canaries have defeated Coventry 2-0
Rams break and Newby high and wide from just outside the box
It must have taken a nick as it's a Rams corner
That's not surprising; the Canaries are in really good form.
Less than ten minutes left for the Derby kids to rescue this one - it doesn't look likely.
Millwall and Forest are thru
Chorley are two nil up!
GOAL !!! CHORELY GO TWO UP. GRETA CROSS BY NEWBYAND CALVERLY VOLLEYS IN WITH HIS TOE TO DIVERT IT PAST THE KEEPER
GOAL! Chorley have surely sealed their place in the 4th Round now!
Lovely chipped cross by Newby Calveley got ahead of his man to steer home.
2-0!
Even though it's considered a giant killing , is this really a giant killing since it's against an under 23 side?
Dave will be pleased that a great cross was rewarded
Kate is wondering what the "shacks" are in the corners of Victory Park. I have no idea. Any thoughts?
Yesterday, Wolves beat Crystal Palace... the two teams are ONE place apart in the league...no teams could be any closer in a Cup tie
Tomorrow, Marine and Spurs play... that match will be between two teams with the biggest gap between teams EVER.... 161!!!
Everton retake the lead for a second time!
Two minutes into extra time
Goal given
Lawn mower storage
Of course - I wish I had a shed like that for storage in the back yard.
As you said, it is a shame that the giant killing looses it's luster because of the youth team
I think I called that gap between Martine and Spurs on the LOB last week before I knew. Do I get a medal, LOL? I called it because I figured it had to be with it being the Prem and the 8th tier
From what I've seen Choreley deserves their lead
Chorley have won!!
Into the FIFTH round draw
No medal but kudos
That's it - Chorley are through to the 4th Round. It's just a shame that their home support aren't there to enjoy the once in a lifetime moment.
It's over and Chorely defeat the Rams 2-0 and are in the 4th Round for the first time in their history. A massive giant killing albeit vs an under 23 side
Definite kudos, David.
First time in 138 years...Cholrey past the 3rd round
I'm off to the shower to wake up a bit. Still suffering from the early wake-up call.
Now off to Goodison
We had an extra shed a few years ago...we gave it away to my school's secretary.... you should have said something!
Thanks, Bob and Dave
Tosun down for the Toffees
It came in a collision as he was going for a cross.
Those storage sheds are excellent
HT of ET
Toffees lead 2-1
It's HT of ET and the Toffees hold a slim 2-1 lead. If Desmond arrives then it could go to penalties
Second half of ET is underway
Over cast in Chorley but less than an hour away sunny in Merseyside
Is anyone watching the 10 AM matches. If so which ones? I'm thinking of Stevenage vs the Swans
Our 3 o'clockers...none are barnburners
Bburn/Donny
Bpool/WBA
Brist R/Shef U
Burn/Dons
Exeter/She W
Old/Bourn
QPR/Ful
Steve/Swans
Stoke/Leic
Wyco/PNE
followed by Arse/Ncastle and then Utd/Wat
Lengthy injury stoppage at Goodison for a head injury. A Toffees player down
Not sure which I will tune in... I actually will tune in THREE matches!
I will have one match on the telly and two on my laptop as well as LOB
It's Jerry Minor, who thankfully is OK as his head is wrapped with a bandage
Did you read what I am wearing today?
You're quite the techie. Well done
Not sure it is techie worth... I just open up two different windows!
Of course, 5Live is going on my phone!
Toffees have a tough match at Molineaux. Don't thin they were exactly wanting ET
League One leaders only drew at home with the Posh today
They are 5 points head of Hull and 7 ahead of Pompey
Hull and Pompey have two games in hand
This is Rotherham's first match since Dec 29th and didn't play Boxing Day so they came into the match well rested
I think I will be watching United Watford on the computer and not thru the telly. I'll have the NFL game on
Colts at the Bills at 1:05
Bob should pay for the tickets available for the game... they were available for only $13,000!!
MORONS!!!
I think Posh is in 5th. Would a Lincoln win have been better for Pompey?
9:22 comment?
Are you an hour behind us?
Agreed. Greedy morons. Is this their way of making yup for the lack of fans at games? Only the rich get to attend
Pompey just need to finish in the top two!!
At least, Posh didn't win
Nice Toffees break led by Bernard and pass comes to Tosun and well defended as it's kicked off him for a goal kick
That's true, Dave. Second would be great since it would mean automatic promotion
Burnley match looks to go ahead even after some Covid scares....I hope United's match there on Tuesday doesn't get cancelled
3 added minutes at Goodison
You're missing a few of my questions
Agreed, Dave. The last thing we want is more postponed matches, especially from a United point of view
I sure am . The morning coffee hasn't completely kicked in. Yes we are an hour behind you, Bob, and Steve
Everton have won and are into the fourth round
It's over at Goodison and the Toffees hang on to defeat Rotherham 2-1 in ET
What I'm wearing?
It would be great to see Pompey finish in the top two for automatic promotion . I typed that earlier but got an error message. Take two
Not sure what you are wearing. Was that comment while I was still asleep?
Also, do you think I am right how they are going to do the 5th round draw?
Just read about the thirtieth anniversary. Sorry about that Dave. Yesterday was similar for me. I would have been my mom's 83rd Birthday yesterday if she were still alive
The 4th round draw will be at 7:10 before Stockport/West Ham match
Yes that's correct. I know you mentioned yesterday that the fourth and fifth draws will both be on Monday
Off for walkies with Sparky . I will probably be a tad late for the 10 AM matches
The draw on Bob's BDAY
Thanks David
I am off for walkies too
Back from walkies and just in time for the 10 AM matches
I'm watching Stevenage vs Swans which is underway
Stevenage already has a player down
Got hit in the face with the ball from an inch away. He seems okay and ready to continue
Very foggy in Hertfordshire today
I'm back from the shower. I can't say that I'm that thrilled by the 10am EST matches, so I'll likely have the Stoke v. Leicester match on in the background and will be in and out while I'm helping Kate with some chores.
Wycombe have taken the lead against PNE early on.
I may well have the Bills game on later. I couldn't care less about the NFL but it is the local team here.
GOAL; !!! WAYNE ROUTLEDGE HEADS SWANS INTO THE LEAD FROM TWO YARDS OUT OFF A CROSS FROM THE LEFT FROM THE SWANS FIRST SUSTAINED SPELL OF THE MATCH
Wayne Routledge has given Swansea an early lead away to Stevanage.
Welcome back, Bob. Wycombe two up vs PNE. Evil Blades in the lead at Bristol Rovers thanks to an OG. That's not idle gossip
I am back from walkies...very cold!!!
I was listening to 5Live...they have the Bristol R Blades match
Blades taking an early lead...will Wilder FINALLY get his 100th win for the Blades....no wins in any competition this season
The cross came from Yan Dhoda. Also great tribute to the kit man for the goal celebration ,who recently passed away
I have tuned in Stoke/Leicester on my Roku
Now to choose a couple of matches on the computer
1st match....Blackbpool vs WBA
Welcome back, Dave. Always great to be in the warm indoors. I'm sure it's less foggy than in Hertfordshire
Again... drives me nuts
Bristol Rovers in Blue and white checkered shirts.... Blades change to PINK!!
Harrogate takes the lead at Cambridge
I've seen the Blades wear salmon jerseys this season. Looks a lot like lox spread!
Match #2
QPR Fulham
Cambridge will be third in L2 with a win so they need to come back
Wycombe are now 2-0 up over PNE. Jacobson with a penalty.
QPR match having problems with connection.... I'll choose another
Port Vale two up vs Grimsby, who are second from bottom behind Stevenage and Barrow by a large goal difference
Bristol Rovers have tied it up!!!
Really sunny here - we might even get some outdoors chores done.
Bristol Rovers ties it up vs the Evil Blades. That's not idle gossip
Overcast and in the 50s here. It's supposed to be in the 60s this afternoon
Lovely - come on, the Rovers!
You're not rooting for Chris Wilder to get win # 100 for the Blades?
Wycombe three up!!
Motley Crewe two up at Rochdale. Tommy lee's lads need two more goal to occupy sixth place, the final L1 playoff spot
Not a Big Club takes the lead at Exeter
Wednesday one up on Saturday at Exeter
Oh - our old friend Sammy Vokes had a big chance there. Blasted over the top on the volley.
George Byers straight to the keeper as the Swans tried to go two up at Burger King
I'm not rooting for Chris Wilder for anything except maybe getting banned from Twitter alongside Donald Trump.
That must be the Potters vs the Foxes
MK Dons take the lead at Turf Moor...I'll tune that one in
Fake Dons take a real lead at Turf Moor
LOL, Bob. You can also include impeachment on that wish list
Burnley miss from three feet!
Black Cats vs Tigers a late L 1 fixture today. That used to be a Prem fixture. Dave will probably be rooting for the Black Cats in that match
GOAL! James Justin with a lovely curler.
0-1 Foxes!
Leicester take the lead in the Potteries....nice curling shot by Justin
Decent spell of possession from Stevenage. They've won several corners
That Burnley player won't be going to Harvard because he first needs to go to finishing school
Motley Crewe three up at Rochdale
Blades get the ball in the net... Ref has disallowed it for a foul
Stevenage players want a penalty. The replay showed that Swans keeper, Freddie woodman dove to palm the ball away long before making any contact with Petts
Motley Crewe one goal away from a playoff spot. Rochdale in the final relegation spot
Newton just over for Stevenage from the edge of the box off a run and cross from Smith
It was Tarkowski....not the sharpest tool in the shed
Another Stevenage chance as a header from Charlie Carter is just wide but took a nick for a corner off a great cross
Stevenage wins a free kick in the D off the corner from a foul from Dhanda
Free kick curled about a foot or two wide
Goal at Ewood Park.... to Donny
Blackpool take the lead against the Baggies
Agreed about Tark. Doubt he would get admitted to Harvard. Also linked with United. Don't think he 's a United quality player
Bournemouth take the lead vs Oldham
Only one goalless cup tie... at Loftus Road
I think that's a return to Bloomfield Road for Fat Sam. I think he had a short spell in charge of the Tangerines many years ago
Big Sam.... failing....love it
ONE pull one back at Wycombe, trailing 3-1
Chris Wood misses a golden opportunity... wide open header...middle of the goal....seven yards out
Rubbish effort.... LEEDS REJECT
