A Classic Match-up, Revisited
A very happy Sunday morning, chaps! At one time, Leeds v. Liverpool was one of the biggest fixtures of the old First Division season. But this is 2021, not 1971, so the priorities are different for my beloved Leeds United. The Whites were able to hold the then champions to a draw at Elland Road last spring, and that result would be more than satisfying today. However, my patented rubric says that we don't need anything from matches with the top teams, so Marcelo Bielsa and the boys can go into this one without any sense of expectation and just have a bit of fun and express themselves. Come on, you Whites! #MOT!
204 Comments:
Morning, boys! I'm well up for this one, despite my lowered expectations. Should be fun. It's the only match of the day, which reminds me of the old days watching Brian Moore on the Big Match. Come on, you Whites!
The team news out of Elland Road:
Leeds: Meslier, Ayling, Llorente, Cooper, Firpo, Phillips, Raphinha, Dallas, Rodrigo, Harrison, Bamford. Subs: Roberts, Klaesson, James, Struijk, Cresswell, Summerville, Klich, McCarron, Shackleton.
Liverpool: Alisson, Alexander-Arnold, Matip, Van Dijk, Robertson, Elliott, Fabinho, Thiago, Salah, Jota, Mane. Subs: Konate, Milner, Keita, Gomez, Henderson, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Jones, Tsimikas, Kelleher.
Referee: Craig Pawson.
So the big news is that Raphinha plays due to that Friday night reprieve from the Premier League. So, our new boy Dan James starts on the bench. I expect to see him bombing on in the second half as an impact sub.
So Leeds will revert to a back four, with Junior Firpo slotting in at left-back and Pascal Struijk dropping to the bench in their only change. Liverpool are without Roberto Firmino as expected, with Jota taking his place in the front three, and bring Thiago in for Jordan Henderson.
Good morning, Bob. I'm in the rec room, joining you for the match. How are you this morning?
Late on in the Championship, Cardiff lead 1-2 at rock bottom Forest
Morning Boys
I am here!!
Elland Road sounds great
COME ON LEEDS!
Looks like the rain is teeming down in West Yorkshire. Crikey!
Off go NBC to commercial!
It's not the pictures but the sound that makes the atmosphere
Finally the sound is back....all American fans should be watching!!
I can just hear our Bob singing along!!
With tears in eyes
Looks like a capacity crowd singing MOT
Morning, Dave - great to have you board for this one. Fantastic atmosphere in the ground. Our mate Doug Fusella is there today. I'm very jealous!
Cardiff have won 1-2 at rock bottom Forest
Good morning Dave.Great atmosphere at ER
I heard Matt Damon interviewed recently and he was asked what the best sporting experience is and without hesitation he said "If you have the chance, go to an English Premier League game!"
Well done, Doug. It will be the experience of a lifetime
Morning, David - thanks for joining me during your weekend trip.
Let's hope that the boys can do him proud today. I feel really bad for Yellows, who has a season ticket to Norwich this season.
They're off from ER!
Glad to join We will be heading home at the conclusion of this match
I sympathize with Yellows. It's going to be a long season
We are off
NBC need us on the staff....they showed a wrong fact about the Leeds/Liverpool history!
They said that Liverpool won their first FA Cup against Leeds....that is true but they said 1964....it was 1965!
Numpties
Furious pace from the start.
Terrible research by the NBC staff.
So Forest lose again? The were winning! Will Chris Houghton last there? There are rumors that John Terry is waiting in the wings
Lord Bamford finds himself behind the Liverpool back four but he's flagged offside.
Fantastic tackle by Kal there on Salah.
Oh - Rodrigo must score there!
Bloody hell....wide open.....shot it right at the keeper!!!!
Had to finish that!!
Of course, Arlo wants to cause controversy
Great close range save by Alison on a,Leeds break that started on a tackle on Salah that might have been a foul
Our hard press seems to be unsettling Liverpool early on.
Norwich are on the bottom but their first four games
Liverpool, Man City, Leicester and Arsenal!!
Dangerous cross by Three First Names....phew
Phew - TAA fizzes a cross across the six yard line. Fortunately, no Liverpool player was running on to it.
I was thinking the same. It seems that Chris Hughton is just a couple of losses from the sack
Tough schedule to start the season for the Canaries
Crazy about that 18 year old Brit Raducanu winning the US Open!!
She is the first qualifier to win either male or female
She had many matches to qualify and then the tournament....NEVER LOST A SET!
First Brit to win the US Open since Virginia Wade in 1968 and the first Brit to win a Grand Slam since Wade's win at Wimbledon in 1977
This match is definitely the high press derby. The two best in the league
Salah is giving Firpo some fits early on. Free kick now. Mark 'em up!
Dixon....this has trouble written all over it.....straight into the wall!!
The Three Numpties are definitely in the Liverpool camp today.
WOW! That's amazing by Raducanu
Mane earns a corner off Llorente.
Mane with a shot deflected for a corner
Bugger - Coop picks up a yellow card as he hauls back Mane.
Corner from TAA headed out then cleared after a bout of head tennis.
Really impressive from the teenager. I'm amazed.
Mini Cooper will need to drive cautiously the Remainder of the match
Juve lost to Naploli today are in 16th with 1 point from 3 games
Inter only drew with Sampdoria
United's CL group foe lost at home to Fiorentina
Oh - great cut out there by Kal and he nearly played in Lord Bamford.
Kal does well to intercept in midfield but the through ball for Bamford was just too long
The schedule also hasn't been kind to Leeds
Having to play United and Liverpool in first four. Everton aren't too shabby either
Jota with a volley...well saved
Oh - Jota was free there in the box but Meslier did well to save.
Nice save by Mezlier from Jota
The coverage missed the challenge but Fabinho picks up a yellow for a late one.
Now the Three Numpties think that they're linesman!
Really loving this match so far. Really exciting stuff from both sides.
Another corner now for Liverpool.
Firpo has a shot blocked
The corner is well cleared by Bamford - he plays a critical role in defending corners.
BUGGER SALAH GIVES POOL THE LEAD
Bugger! Salah slots home from a tidy Liverpool move. His ton is up!
Bugger
He could be offside....he's behind the ball....bugger
It came off a pass from TAA off a pass from Thiago off a pass from Salah
Sorry Bob. Leeds will come back
Firpo is starting to get a handle on Salah, despite the scoreline.
I hope so, David - the commentators seem to think it's a foregone conclusion.
Ball in the Leeds net again....but it is offside
The linesman should have put the flag up right away
Phew! Thiago heads home at the backpost but it's ruled offside.
PHEW! Thiago heads in a cross from Salah , but Salah flagged offside.Still 0-1
Oh - Mane should have scored there. Liverpool starting to run over us a bit now. Dangerous period of the match.
Well all three of the commentators are numpties...all they want is to be a comedian or cause controversy
PHEW....Liverpool should have scored again
Leeds need to stop giving the ball away !!
Leeds survive again!!
Phew! Elliott might have had another one there. Well blocked by Coop.
Great block and then save
Phew! Now Virgil is wide open at the corner. Somehow he missed the flight of the ball and it goes out for another corner.
Mane has a shot land in Row T from a yard out off a run and cross from Jota then a close range block by Meslir from Harvey Elliott
Come on Leeds....wake up!
You've survived an onslaught
I love how open this match is. Could be 1-3 or 2-4. The way that the game should be played.
Lots of Pool chances since the goal
Shame - that was a nice interplay between Rodrigo and Lord Bamford.
Now it's Llorente into the book - not a good sign so early on.
Pool no third behind United and Chelsea on goal difference. Leeds one place above the drop zone
Struth....Mane hits one inches wide
Oh - Mane just inches wide. Phew!
OH!Just wide by Mane off a pass from Salah
Looks like Llorente might have a problem here. We've got Struijk warming up.
Jamie Milner warming up on his old stomping grounds.
Are the fans giving Milner a good reception as he's warming up?
Real injuries worries for Llorente - he missed much of last season as well. Struijk into the fray.
I'm sure there are some comments from the faithful.
Lorente off injured and replaced by the erratic strike
I have golf on my laptop on right now....a Yank, Horshell, could win it....he has a West Ham United golf bag!!!
Golf?!
Best thing about Leeds taking on Liverpool....it is all white vs all red
Yes...Ryder Cup almost upon us
Of course, the main point of my comment is a Hammers' golf bag
Phew! Elliott is just wide of the mark there.
Not a good break by Raphina! Awful pass
Bring on United Reject
Foul on Jota by Coop there - he's riding a fine line right about now. If Llorente hadn't already gone off, I'd say take him off at half time so that he doesn't get a second yellow.
I expect to see Dan James in the second half.
Free kick chance for TAA....straight into the wall
Straight into the wall, fortunately and hoofed away.
Free kick to Pool
Still 0-1
Of course Le Sox thinks we're too attacking and need to keep more bodies behind the ball. He doesn't get it.
Numpty
Ayling.....be better!!!
Awful attempt of a pass
Ayling...back post....volleyed over
How can he score at OT and miss that one!
Oh - Luke Ayling was creeping in at the back post and should have at least hit the target and made Alisson work.
Went off his knee!!
Duck and head it!
An Ayling volley well over off a cross from Harrison
I still can't get used to Klopp without his specs.
Phew...I thought Salah was in... good challenge by Lord Bam
Le Socks le sucks
He should shave too
2 added minutes
That's it
Half time and Leeds have survived.... second half....LEEDS TIME
BTW....The Hammer Golfer just won
Pool one up at the half. Leeds still in this match.
Half-time comes and we're behind again. In truth, it could have been worse. But I love the openness of the match and we're playing well in fits and starts.
0-1.
We are back to Elland Road.....Come on United(fake one)
Horschel comes out to get his trophy.....shows the Hammers cross!!
Tyler Roberts on for Rodrigo
We are off
We're underway in the second half and Tyler Roberts has come on for Rodrigo.
LeSox already yapping
Second half underway
Now they are trying to make jokes about North and South Yorkshire!
Leeds play next at SJP on Friday
Phew! Struijk with a great final challenge there. VAR check though.
OMG...how did Liverpool not score there!!
Never a pen!!
They had to score....TWICE
Stop laughing Klopp.....never a pen!!
Corner it is - phew!
Bloody hell.... a scrappy goal!
Bugger! Couldn't clear the corner and Fabinho nets.
0-2
VAR checking for a possible trip on Mane in the box then wide by Salah from a yard out. It's a corner
VAR check now - let's hope it's called offside.
VAR checking for offside... it counts
Liverpool need to score two more to overtake United at the top
BUGGER!FAB PUTS POOL TWO UP. VAN DYKE HEADS ON THE CORNER AND FAB SCORES. VAR CHECKING FOR OFFSIDE. THE GOAL STANDS
Sorry Bob
Great turn by Dallas....find a teammate!!!
Nice stuff there from us but Tyler needs to nod that one home with purpose.
Roberts....useless effort!
More good stuff through Jack but another bad miss by Tyler.
Nice run and cross by Stu Dallas headed up by Van Dyke and Tyler Robert's heads straight to Alison.
Leeds will need to win at SJP on Friday.
Elliott is down after a clash with Firpo - look bad.
Sounds like an awful injury for Harvey Elliot
Harvey Elliott down off a challenge from Strike.
What?! Craig Pawson has shown a red card. Must be for Struijk.
My first impression was that it was a good challenge. They won't show it again.
It goes from bad to worse as Strike is sent off . Is he refusing to leave the pitch?
What a bummer
Why is Klopp still annoyed
Leeds fans give a good round of applause
Was he sent off by the ref or VAR?
Jordan Henderson comes on for the injured Elliott who was stretchered off with applause from both sets of fans.
Hendo on for Harvey Elliott
We've got a free kick now out wide left.
Jame about to come on....not a good time for him
Oh - Lord Bamford comes in at the back post but can't control his effort.
Dan James about to come on for his Leeds debut
We've gone to a back three now with Dallas dropping to right back. Dan James is about to make his debut.
Come on, Dan - let's show us your stuff!
Dan James on for Jack Harrison
Sorry Boys....I have to go do a few errands
Fingers crossed for a surprised visit by Desmond
TTFN
No worries, Dave - enjoy the rest of your weekend.
Struijk is the first player we've had sent off since returning to the Premier League. No red cards last season.
Dan James wins a free kick off Fabinho. Let's make the most of it!
It's been a good reaction from us to going down to ten men. A lot of teams would have fallen apart.
MOT!
End to end stuff now. Raph runs through and feeds Lord Bamford. Couldn't slide it in, sadly.
Great block by Ayling from Mane then by Iron on Bam.
Cheers Dave. Enjoy the rest of the weekend.
Good save by Meslier from Hendo's shot.
Comfortable save by Meslier from Hendo.
Good stuff from Dan James earning us a corner. Let's have one back, boys!
Phew! Mane was in again but Ayling busted a gut to get back. A combination between Ayling and Meslier kept out a third.
Great last ditch block by Ayling on Mane for a Pool corner.
The Ox comes on for Jota.
Ox on for Jota
Oh - Lord Bamford with a Pele effort that Alisson had to tip over!
On the replay, that was going in!
OH!Bam chips Alison from 45 yards out but well tipped over
Now the numpties think they're golf experts.
Love to see Dan James' speed.
They'd be better off commentating on the golf.
Mane is away again but Ayling tracked back a bit.
Mane with a shot blocked for a corner on the break off a nice long ball from Hendo.
Eight minutes of stoppage time due to the injury to Elliott.
Eight is enough. More than for stoppage time minutes.
Enough for Desmond to appear in the Revie Stand?
Bugger! Mane finally gets his goal right at the end of this one.
0-3!
BUGGER Mane puts Pool three up.Nice turn and finish off a pass from Thiago from Hendo.
Pool third behind Chelsea on alphabet soup and United on goals scored.
Let's keep the score down mate
It wasn't to be our day today. Well beaten by a better side. That said, apart from the Harvey Elliott injury and the red card, it was a really exciting attractive outing from both sides.
The match on Friday at St James' Park, as you say, is a more important one. We'll need a win for sure.
