Happy Beckham Day!

We are all former students at Lakenheath High School and other public schools in East Anglia. We were in school in the 70s and 80s and drank deeply from the well of British culture of those decades - the pints, the telly, and of course the footie!

The Beckham launch press conference today was actually quite instructive about the state of footie in the U.S. First the good news: live coverage of most of it on ESPN2 and FSC, the presence of notable such as the LA mayor - who got booed by the crowd! - and a loud, boisterous fan base at the Home Depot Center.
Now the bad: The Deuce interwove their live Becks coverage with a panel of numpties who completely rubbished the idea that Becks would have any effect on the MLS. Thanks a lot. How is it that the suits as ESPN don't realize that it's counterproductive to employ anti-MLS idiots such as Jim Rome at the same time that their spending millions broadcasting MLS?
I just can't stand listening to the Beckham talk at all. On TV as well as radio.
EVERYTHING is tongue in cheek and also very negative!!
It just drives me nuts
I reckon that he has to silence them on the pitch the way that he did with the doubters last year at Real. He's the consummate professional and I can't believe that he won't be able to succeed in this league.
The news on Becks today (7/19) isn't so great. He trained on Tuesday for about half an hour, mostly with his own trainer away from the rest of the side, with about 5,000 in attendance.
Then the next night Becks looked on as his side got tonked by a second rate Mexican team.
He's scheduled to play against Chelski on Saturday night and ESPN2 is hyping the hell of their coverage starting at 8:30 p.m., but it's still an open question whether he'll play. I hope he can at least play the first half and do well.
