Lakenheath Old Boys

We are all former students at Lakenheath High School and other public schools in East Anglia. We were in school in the 70s and 80s and drank deeply from the well of British culture of those decades - the pints, the telly, and of course the footie!

Premiership Saturday

Another Saturday, another intriguing day of footie. The big boys may all be playing tomorrow but there's plenty of interest in these fixtures:

Birmingham vs. West Ham
Fulham vs. Boro
Newcastle vs. Villa
Portsmouth vs. Bolton
Reading vs. Everton
Spurs vs. Derby
Wigan vs. Sunderland

And of course I'll be following Leeds at home to the dreaded Shrimpers - Southend.

And in the early kickoff, Pompey are 2-1 up against the hapless Bolton who may well be bottom of the table at the end of the same. Taxi for Little Sam?

You still feel animosity for Bolton under Sammy Lee? I would have thought that that had transferred to Newcastle with Big Sam. I just think that Bolton are pathetic this season - they may well go down.

Blogger gooner71 said...

Make no mistake, Piltdown Sam is the focus point of my hatred, but I've got no love at all for a team whose success has come almost 100% from kicking the opposition off the pitch. Bolton is definitely part of my dream drop 3.

But you're right, I hate Newcastle because of Allardyce and wish them nothing but ill.

Seen Superbad yet? The boy and I are sneaking out tonight to see it.

And we're off and away with the main attractions today including the FSC match - Reading vs. Everton.

10:05 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

And who would have dreamt it? Spurs have scored their first goal of the season through Steed Malbranque in the opening minutes against the hapless Derby.

Interesting comment from 365 feed:

"1500: This afternoon's action has got under way apart from at Elland Road where Leeds United's clash with Southend has been delayed due to crowd congestion."

Bet that's never happened before in the Coca Cola League Division One.

10:09 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Oh, AJ missed a sitter there. Mikel Arteta making lots of misery for the Reading defense - Everton look decent this season.

10:12 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

And Ipswich have taken the lead against Plymouth. The Tractor Boys are top of the league!

10:13 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Steed Malbranque has doubled Tottenham's lead. So just how bad are Derby? I think we have our answer.

10:16 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Blimey - Spurs are 3-0 up! Jermaine Jenas has got in on the party. Let's hope Macca isn't watching this.

10:18 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

I can't tell you how much I like Stephen Hunt. Not only did he deliberately knee Petr Cech in the noggin and take Bobby Convey's place in the Reading side, but he's just a really chippy little sod.

10:20 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Way hay - Brian McBride has scored for Fulham against Boro. That's a few points for my fantasy side - the Dahlgren Marxmen.

10:22 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

YESSS! The late start hasn't dulled our efforts. Alan Thompson has scored for Leeds against Southend after only three minutes. We're now on -9 pts!

Good morning.
Congrats on a great start to the season

10:25 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Wigan have taken the lead against Keano's Sunderland through Emile Heskey.

10:25 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Heske!! Let's hope Macca is watching

10:28 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Hey Dave: Do you really want Emile starting for England? With Roon out of the picture and Mikey Owen just on the mend, I'd have to plump for a striking partnership of Peter Crouch and Andy Johnson in the upcoming Germany friendly and qualifier.

10:36 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Thanks for the congrats, Dave. Where are you watching the big one tomorrow? Should be a cracker!

10:37 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

I WAS BEING SARKY!!!!!!!!!!
Tomorrow, I am going to a friends house to watch the derby but have to leave early and will miss the big one because we are talking my father-in-law to a Scottish Festival

10:41 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Brian McBride's been stretchered off at Fulham. No doubt sticking his head in where it hurts.

10:41 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Once again, the suits at FSC have chosen the worst game of the day. 0-0 coming up on half time with precious few chances.

10:44 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Reading with a goal. They have deserved more than one point so far this season

10:44 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Spoke to soon - Stephen Hunt has nipped in to score just before the interval. Reading 1-0.

10:44 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

No it isn't the worse game.
From the BBC

1527: Anyone wondering what's going on at St Andrews? Here's BBC 5live commentator Mark Pougatch: "This is the kind of game where you wish you'd brought a newspaper with you. One shot so far."

10:47 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Great stuff, Dave. That does sound dire. I haven't been impressed by the Hammers so far. Surely they should be better given all the players that they brought in.

10:48 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Tottenham have been knocking on the door looking for their fourth. That's got to have put a smile back on Martin Jol's face.

10:49 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

The evergreen Ready Ted Teddy Sheringham has scored his first goal for his new club - Colchester - against Barnsley. Are you watching, Steve McClaren?

10:51 AM
Blogger gooner71 said...

Just a reminder... I was listening to the Football Weekly Podcast and was alerted to a potential cracker of a match today. Shalke v Dortmund.

They're derby rivals anyway, and last season it was Dortmund that knicked the points off Shalke that knocked Shalke out of championship contention.

Good start for Leeds, keep going.

10:52 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Did you see that FSC are showing the US vs Sweden live on Wed. and then showing England Germany on tape delay.
Should I keep away from the score?

10:52 AM
Blogger gooner71 said...

Oh, and the match is on GolTV at 11.30am

10:53 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

I am enjoying this new format on FSC with the two geezers commenting on the matches at half time, even though Nick Webster is a bit of a prawn and I don't even know this Andy Houlihan bloke.

10:53 AM
Blogger gooner71 said...

With the England squad at the moment, yes, definitely. And if you have to watch, do so through splayed fingers.

10:54 AM
Blogger gooner71 said...

Not sure about Houlihan at all. He talks like someone who's swotted all night just before needing to say something.

Webster, king prawn.

10:56 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Thanks for the info, Gooner. Which match is on GolTV - England v Germany?

10:56 AM
Blogger gooner71 said...

No, the Shalke v Dortmund today at 11.30a is on GolTV. I know you disdain the Bundesliga, but this one might be ok.

10:57 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

They should hire us three. We would be unmissable TV

10:58 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

New boy Kieron Dyer has had a penalty appeal turned away for the Hammers. Sorry Sir Trev. Would have loved to have been a fly on the wall for that reunion between Dyer and Banjo Boy.

10:58 AM
Blogger gooner71 said...

True that Davey.

Not any of Christian Myles, Max Bretos, Nick Webster or Andy Houlihan can hold a candle to the level of commentary kept up on the LOB!

11:03 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

I agree, Dave. Still, I appreciate the effort. I have to admit that the coverage is getting better. And it looks as if I'll be able to get FSC with a basic cable package for $45 next year in Gville. Woo hoo!

11:05 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Leeds have just reached half time.
Is there any hope of bringing down the penalty of point reduction?
Juve and Milan sure were reprieved

11:06 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

It doesn't look like it, Dave. They had the hearing two weeks ago. The other 70-odd Football League clubs were asked and - not surprisingly - they all agreed with the points deduction. No one likes us - we don't care. I sense a real atmosphere of grit and determination around the place, including among supporters this season.

11:11 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

No appeal process?

11:14 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

I'm sure that there is one in progress, but I just don't sense any sympathy. The World Soccer Daily lads have really been sticking the knife in. I'm planning to call them on Monday if we win today to gloat about three wins on the trot.

11:18 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

two quick prem goals.
Wigan two up against Keano and Boro ties it up with Fulham. Mido scores on his debut

11:22 AM
Blogger gooner71 said...

Yeah, true. This is a balls-out effort and you need to keep grinding 3-points at a time, every time.

No cockeyness, just yet.

More bad news for Engurlund

1611: Portsmouth boss Harry Redknapp has confirmed that Sol Campbell's groin injury will keep him out of England's friendly against Germany. Recalled to the squad on Friday, out of the squad on Saturday

11:28 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Fair enough, but I may not get the opportunity to be cocky again this season.

Sounds like Keano's getting a true introduction to the Premiership this weekend.

11:30 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Sunderland are three down

Hair Dryer treatment from Keano?

11:30 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

I wonder if Mark Pougatch has found a newspaper? Still nil nil at St. Andrews

11:31 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Sol Campbell? You're having a laugh. There must be a dozen center backs you'd have before him. They can't all be injured?

11:34 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

I spoke too soon.
The Hammers have scored!!!

11:34 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

oops, The Tractor Boys are down to ten men

11:34 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Definite hairdryer from Keano at full-time. They may lose a few this season but they can't afford to get tonked by the likes of bloody Wigan!

West Ham have scored a pen against Brum - well in!

11:35 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Hello! Here comes Bobby Convey. More points for the Dahlgren Marxmen side.

11:37 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Spurs are four up

11:38 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Did you see the Prem Archives the other night?
It is a half hour show with no commercials. It was Leeds 4 Spurs 3 from September 2000. It was great

11:40 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Leeds v. Southend are in the 60th minute now. Only half an hour to grind out this win. Come on!

11:40 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Didn't see it, but it sounds fab. Darren Bent with his first goal for Spurs - might get a look in for England?

11:42 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Wow, what a scramble in the Reading box

11:43 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

AJ hasn't looked sharp enough today. I wouldn't fancy him in the England side.

11:45 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Did you know that EVERY game this season in the Prem has had at least one goal except United Reading!!!

11:45 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Town have been pegged back. So much for the 100% record

11:46 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Yeah, I saw that. My fantasy keeper Marcus Hahnemann earned twelve points for me on that performance.

11:49 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Bugger! Southend have leveled it. Time for some more late heroics.

11:50 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Fingers crossed. They have had late drama in all their games.

11:52 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Reading are the new Bolton. Not pretty but they've got a valuable four points in the bank after three games.

11:54 AM

The Hammers get the win

11:57 AM

11:57 AM

I take that back, Boro win and they will be sixteenth. Villa win today Seventeenth!!!

Early doors, Dave. Early doors.

12:01 PM

Wisey seems to be going for it. A flurry of substitutions and we're pouring it on looking for the win.

12:02 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Oh dear, Fulham have been denied a late goal. And it looks to be more grist for the electronic sensor on the goalline mill.

12:06 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Yes! We're back in front with a sweet kadumph from big Tore Andre Flo. Genius substitution there from Wisey.

12:08 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Leeds don't score a late goal... THEY SCORE TWO LATE GOALS!!!

12:08 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

WAY HAY! Only a hundred a five more points and we'll be winning the league!

12:11 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Duck soup

12:13 PM

MAKE THAT THREE LATE GOALS!!!!

12:13 PM

Congrats Bob, keeping knocking in the goals and that's worth another point!!!

12:15 PM

Yeah, Tresor Kandol's now on two in two games. Well done, lad.

12:17 PM

Full time - Leeds 4 Southend 1

Can I be cocky yet?

12:21 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

And speaking of Leeds, look at this Newcastle side? Blimey.

12:22 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

A lot of what was wearing white the other night in Prem Archives

12:23 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

I could have easily picked an all ex-Leeds fantasy side.

Robbo
Carson
Mills
Woody
Rio
Bowyer
Milner
Smithy
Kewell
Lennon
Viduka
Healey
Keane

Not a bad squad, either, eh?
