Lakenheath Old Boys

We are all former students at Lakenheath High School and other public schools in East Anglia. We were in school in the 70s and 80s and drank deeply from the well of British culture of those decades - the pints, the telly, and of course the footie!

Andy and Hairy Hands caught making sexist remarks

Uh-oh, Andy Gray and Richard Keys are the lastest two numpties that can't control what they say when the red light is on.

I think they've really slandered Sian Massey who did a good job in the Liverpool Wolves game, but I can't recall Wendy Tom's performance. I agree with Keys that Karren Brady is beyond the pale, but not because she's female.

What a pair of twats. They are dinosaurs. WE've been having a good laugh at them all day. I shant be satisfied until they make an on-air apology. A trite apology behind the scenes is nowhere near enough.

Thankfully ITV's Bland Andy Townsend was there to put it all right with his putdown of the pair on Twitter.

"Disappointed in Richard Keys & Andy Gray. In this day and age women in football should be given more respect, especially the attractive ones"

What a mug.

Thanks for the post, Gooner. I'd like to think that this affair is another nail in the new BSkyB deal that Evil Rupert is cooking up to bilk us out of more cash, but I'm too jaded for that. I'd be sorry to lose Andy but Richard Keys has always been a complete wanker IMHO.

Of course Karren Brady's milking it. If she wasn't as loathsome as she is, you might feel sorry for her. Sian Massey, Wendy Toms, and other women at their level have my full sympathy however.

In a way, the attention and heat that this is attracting is a good thing. Women working on air for SKY might become more than the window dressing they are, but more importantly, more female on-air talent will get into the commentary booth. And really now, if you did a side-by-side commentary of the comments of Andy Gray, Trevor Francis, and Amy Lawrence without their byline, who would you think had played the game at the top level?

Richard Keys and Andy Gray acted like a bunch of losers. I agree with Bob that Andy has been a great announcer, but those remarks cannot be tolerated. I have no sympathy for Richard Keys. No station worth its salt should hire him. In other word his broadcasting/journalistic career should be finished.Pulling them from the Monday Night game was the correct decision. They should be pulled from all games on a permanent basis. IMHO. I know that seems harsh, but a precedent must be set that there will be severe consequence for those who make discriminatory remarks. I like Andy, but a price must be paid for his infraction. You cannot punish Richard, but not Andy even though is a loser and one was guilty of speaking without thinking. Andy would be missed, but he knows that he is held to a higher level of accountability. He has no excuses.
I want to end this subject on a positive note. Sian Massey had an excellent match. As far as I know, she did not make any mistakes. The correct decision was made on both goals that Geniuses Richard and Andy claimed were offside. Zubar kept The Liversox players onside for the first goal and a Wolves central defender kept Kuyyt onside for the final goal. Perhaps Richard and Andy can study the offside law as they begin their retirement from broadcasting.

Wow!

Btw, there's a great discussion of the controversy on the Football Weekly pod. Not a lot of sympathy for Andy and Hairy Hands from AC Jimbo and the crew.

WOW! I guess I called it. Did Richard Keys get the sack too? Even though he was not as explicit, he was culpable too. It is important to be consistent. You cannot punish one and not the other. Keys can be easily replaced. He is a dime a dozen or is it a pence a dozen?

Just read that Richard Keys resigned , stating that "dark forces" were at work. Sounds like something from Star Wars. Beware of Darth Vader.

The Keys interview on TalkSpite really sums it up. No question in my mind remains that he's deluded enough to think that he's a victim, and just as responsible for SKY's broadcasting success as Gray was or hell, even Murdoch himself. And to think, if he'd not slagged off the linesman, he'd just have been a run of the mill plonker in our minds. What a maniac.

Hilarious interview that. I woke up and listened live and was following the furore on twitter with it. Absolute PR disaster - couldnt help but blame other folk. Should have just apologised a lot, taken a few viewer calls and left. Instead sounded too much like a media insider and covering all his bases.

Sad for them both, its a horrible way to end a career and they're not alone in this behaviour. THey got caught though and royally stitched up by Sky insiders.

Good riddance to Hairy Hands, IMHO. Still hoping that this scandal is part of scuppering the new BSkyB deal that Rupert has been hatching.

What are the best zingers you've heard about this scandal?

Mine was after Mrs. Keys said that SKY were "offside" about firing Gray and Keys. To which, someone commented, "apologies to Andy Gray. He may have a point after all. This woman has no idea of what the offside rule is."
