State of the Union Drinking Game
It's State of the Union night tonight and as usual I've got the drinks in for one of my January highlights. If you're game for watching Barack and playing along, grab your favorite libation and join me at or around 9pm for the festivities. Here are the rules for this year:
Take a drink if:
1. A media pundit mentions the phrase "move to the center" during the evening.
2. Barack Obama says mentions "Tucson."
3. Michelle Obama is shown wearing sitting next to Oprah in the gallery.
4. John McCain and Joe Lieberman are shown sitting next to each other.
5. Joe Biden pats John Boehner on the back at any point during the evening.
6. Barack promises to get troops out of Afghanistan by the July deadline.
7. Any Tea Party caucus member gives the President a standing ovation.
8. Barack Obama brags about ending "Don't Ask, Don't Tell."
9. A Chilean miner in the gallery is applauded.
10. Paul Ryan says the phrase "cut entitlements" in the GOP response
Drink up if:
1. Michelle Bachmann applauds anything Obama has said.
2. John Boehner cries.
3. A Supreme Court justice heckles the Prez.
Feel free to add your own rules....
Cheers!

I'm starting the evening with MSNBC's coverage of the SOTU, with big 'ead Lawrence O'Donnell now in the late lamented Keith Olbermann's 8pm slot.
Larry has just had Howard Dean on as a guest. Howard reckons that Barack's speech, which has already been leaked on-line, is a good one for progressives. I'm still waiting to be impressed.
One of the interesting notes for the evening is the Congressional Prom Date match-ups. Mark Udall of Utah has asked Dems to sit next to Repubs. So far it looks as if it's John Kerry and not Droopy Dog who's sitting next to McCain.
More strange bedfellows - Kristen Gillebrand next to John Thune.
Chuck Schumer matched up with Tom Coburn.
Looks like it's Claire McCaskill matched up with the old philanderer John Ensign.
The Supreme Court has been seated. We'll see if there is any eye rolling or tongue wagging from them this time around.
Michelle Obama has entered the chamber. She seems to be sitting next to some survivors of the Tucson shooting.
Here comes the Prez...!
We start off with the pleasantries. And it looks like Boehner is about to cry. Uh oh.
Barack is setting the "bi-partisan" tone from the offing.
Not a lot of applause lines yet. It seems the Congress is a bit skeptical of the happy talk about the economy.
Boy, this speech is bombing worse than Dresden. You can actually hear guys coughing in the hall.
Uh oh - here comes education.
Lots of vague platitudes about "Race to the Top" coming.
Wow - respect for teachers. I didn't see that coming. Big standing 'o' from the Big O.
But it's quickly followed by scapegoating "bad teachers."
On to foreign policy now. Yikes!
Aha! "Don't Ask, Don't Tell." He didn't mention its repeal by name but I'm drinking anyway.
Again, he spoiled the moment by then going on to ask universities to open their doors to military recruiters.
Uh oh - there goes Boehner crying like a baby. Drink up!
Now the Chilean miners. No miner in the gallery but the guy who made the drilling equipment is there. I'm taking a drink anyway.
I have one. Drink up if someone from the GOP mentions no"pork barrel" bills despite the fact that he/she sponsored in the past two years. Were pork barrel bills discussed during the STOU?
Good evening BD . I have another one . Drink up if health care reform is mentioned.
So that's it, then. A little over an hour. Rachel Maddow characterizes it as a "pep talk."
I just turned on the television and the SOTU speech ended. I was out tutoring/ taking my daughter to yoga this evening.
Hiya, David. Good to have you on board. There was a reference to health care about fifteen minutes ago. I'll have a drinkie on you for that one.
Sounds like a good evening. How's the semester going?
Rachel is calling the response in the hall "subdued." I thought so too. I can't remember a speech that had fewer obvious applause lines.
I need several drinks after today. I saw the comment about teachers. I will believe when I say it. That will be a drink for laughs. I will keep a tab and have plenty to drink this weekend.
I heard her mentioned subdued. It has been a hectic past two weeks. How has life been since you returned to Fred Town?
Very hectic here too. But I've got a relatively light teaching schedule this semester so once I get beyond tomorrow, I should be able to catch up.
Looking forward to joining all of you for the FA Cup 4th Round coverage this weekend. Good win for United today, btw.
There it is . Katie Couric just mentioned health care reform and how Boehner clapped when Obama mentioned 100,00 new teachers. where? Every state is making cuts in their budgets.
Yes. I was worried once we were trailing. United have been winning the hard way this season, but are five points clear. Did Richard Keys get sacked today. I know Andy Gray did?
That was an odd comment. I don't know any state that's hiring a significant number of new teachers.
No news on old Hairy Hands as of yet. He's the one I wanted sacked, but Sky turned up a fairly incriminating piece of video where Andy was encouraging a female colleague to attach a microphone to his crotch. Not pretty. That probably was the straw that broke Andy's back.
Okay, so here we go with Paul Ryan with the GOP response. Get ready for the draconian spending cuts.
He's mentioning Gabby Giffords but, like Barack, he's got nothing on gun control. Instead we're supposed to pray, as if that's going to get guns out of the wrong hands.
That makes sense. Hairy Hands must be one mistake away from the sack as his remarks were less severe than Andy's. I guess that's the end of the road for Andy. I saw his career stats. Other than two seasons he was just an average striker.
True - he was a much better pundit than striker. He was a big, big part of Sky's success. It's a shame to lose him IMHO, but he had to go.
The GOP believes prayer is the answer to everything. That needs to stay at home and at church, not out in public.
Here's what the Guardian printed today:
"Sky Sports was last night under growing pressure to axe its main football anchor Richard Keys, after earlier sacking his colleague Andy Gray over a string of sexist remarks made off air but caught on tape.
After Gray was summarily dismissed when new footage came to light that showed him making lewd suggestions to a female co-host, the pressure to take action against Keys, too, increased when yet another clip appeared to show him talking in sexist terms about a former girlfriend of the pundit Jamie Redknapp."
Agree with you on the separation of church and state.
There it is . The GOP response is to replace health care reform with patient care reform. Is that a fancy phrase for corporate run health care with no accountability and sticking it to the patients?
Then why is Sky so desperate to hang on to Keys? It's as if he has damaging info on SKY.
Social services are apparently a "hammock" according to Ryan.
Paul Ryan talks about spending cuts and lowering the deficit. This did not happen under Bush's presidency. What a hypocrite.
He will be the first one to complain when social services are eliminated.
You're absolutely right about the GOP plan for "patient's rights." It's code for privatization.
Btw, Rio Ferdinand commented on the Gray/Keys scandal via Twitter: "I'm all for women refereeing in football, discrimination should not happen in our game at all ... prehistoric views if u think otherwise."
Good on 'im!
Good for Rio. He is absolutely correct.
Obama travels to Wisconsin tomorrow to endorse the SOTU.
MSNBC pundits are dumping on Ryan now.
FOX News is probably treating him like royalty.
Probably so. I was hoping to get a chance to see the Crazy Talk with Michelle Bachmann Hour. I wonder what happened to that?
Rachel seems to have slipped very easily into the Keith Olbermann anchor role for tonight's events.
I enjoyed chatting with you, Bob. I will need to get ready for work tomorrow as I have to wake up early in the morning. Have a great week and I will definitely be available for the FA Cup 4th Round.
Cheers
Cheerio, David. See you at the weekend!
