Oscar Night 2013!
Okay, movie buffs out there in LOB-land - it's Oscar Night! I know, I know, I know - it's a big industry event where the glitterati gets to pat themselves on the backs for making megabucks off fairly mediocre product. However, these evenings also always include some cultural gems. So join me for some snarky commenting on the good, the bad and the absurd during the Academy Awards ceremony.
508 Comments:
I'm tuning in to the red carpet bollocks on E-TV right now. Picking up some fashion tips, for sure.
Time for some predictions - first up - Best Foreign Film: The nominees:
Amour (Austria)
Kon-tiki (Norway)
No (Chile)
A Royal Affair (Denmark)
War Witch (Canada)
Amour is also listed in the Best Film column, where it has no chance but Michael Haneke's beautiful film about an aging couple is both my pick and my prediction. A run-away favorite.
Best Documentary - the nominees:
5 Broken Cameras
The Gatekeepers
How to Survive a Plague
The Invisible War
Searching for Sugar Man
"The Invisible War" deals with the very important issue of sexual abuse in the military, but it's a fairly conventional doc. So, I'm going for "Searching for Sugar Man," which helped me to uncover a new favorite musician Rodriguez.
Best Supporting Actress - the nominees:
Amy Adams (The Master)
Sally Field (Lincoln)
Anne Hathaway (Les Miz)
Helen Hunt (The Sessions)
Jacki Weaver (Silver Linings Playbook)
A very strong category tonight. Any of these actresses could win but I predict that Jacki Weaver will win as "Silver Linings" has had a huge media campaign backing it. I'm pulling for Sally Field, though.
Best Supporting Actor - the nominees:
Alan Arkin (Argo)
Robert De Niro (Silver Linings Playbook)
Philip Seymour Hoffman (The Master)
Tommy Lee Jones (Lincoln)
Christoph Waltz (Django Unchained)
Another strong one. It'll probably be Tommy Lee's night but I'd love to see either Alan Arkin or Philip Seymour Hoffman rewarded.
Best Director - the nominees:
Michael Haneke (Amour)
Benh Zeitliin (Beasts of the Southern Wild)
Ang Lee (Life of Pi)
Steven Spielberg (Lincoln)
David O. Russell (Silver Linings Playbook)
I would have loved to have seen Ben Affleck get this one for "Argo," one of my faves of the year. But he was snubbed if favor of some riskier choices. This should be a dog-fight between Spielberg, who's won before, and Russell, who's the up and comer.
Best Director - the nominees:
Michael Haneke (Amour)
Benh Zeitliin (Beasts of the Southern Wild)
Ang Lee (Life of Pi)
Steven Spielberg (Lincoln)
David O. Russell (Silver Linings Playbook)
I would have loved to have seen Ben Affleck get this one for "Argo," one of my faves of the year. But he was snubbed if favor of some riskier choices. This should be a dog-fight between Spielberg, who's won before, and Russell, who's the up and comer.
Original Screenplay - the nominees:
Michael Haneke (Amour)
Quentin Tarantino (Django Unchained)
John Gatins (Flight)
Wes Anderson (Moonrise Kingdom)
Mark Boal (Zero Dark Thirty)
I'm anyone but Mark Boal in this category. I expect Quentin to pick this one up but I'd love to see of my faves Wes Anderson, who should have got a Best Picture nod this year, get this.
Best Actress - the nominees:
Jessica Chastain (Zero Dark Thirty)
Jennifer Lawrence (Silver Linings)
Emmanuelle Riva (Amour)
Quevenzhane Wallis (Beasts)
Naomi Watts (The Impossible)
It'll probably go to Jennifer Lawrence, Hollywood's new "It" girl, but I'd love Quevenzhane to get it. That kid is incredible in "Beasts." Again - anything but "Zero Dark"
Best Actor - the nominees:
Bradley Cooper (Silver Linings)
Daniel Day Lewis (Lincoln)
Hugh Jackman (Les Miz)
Joaquin Phoenix (The Master)
Denzel Washington (Flight)
Very strong group, but it's got to be Daniel Day whose take on Lincoln is one for the ages.
Best Picture - the nominees:
Amour
Argo
Beasts of the Southern Wild
Django Unchained
Les Miz
Life of Pi
Lincoln
Silver Linings Playbook
Zero Dark Thirty
An overcrowded field here. Hard to predict this one. I'd love to see Affleck up there for "Argo." But it could easily tip to either "Silver Linings" or "Lincoln" Please do not let the torture porn of "Zero Dark Thirty" get anything tonight.
Off to whip up some jambalaya for dinner. Back in a tick.
Good afternoon,BD. Up after an afternoon nap.Wish I could join you for some of the Cajun feast.
Hiya, MUR - great to have you on board for the festivities this evening. Any favorites among the field for you? Or people you hate?
Thanks, BD. My favorites are the two I saw on the reunion. The one in DC was the one with Bruce Willis about the dysfunctional families on the NE style island while I am sure I hate plenty even if I didn't watch them!
I just saw your lists of nominees. It was Moonrise King so I guess I'll go with that even though Lincoln will probably make a clean sweep.
Ah - that's right. Good choice. Moonrise was definitely one of my favorites this year.
Ta,BD. I vote Kristen Chenoweth most obnoxious. Get her out of here!
Washing down my Cajun feast with a lovely Magic Hat Stout right now. Yum!
I think Amour will win for Best Foreign although I would prefer A Foreign Affair. Anne Hathaway for Best Supporting Actress. Christoph Waltz for Best Supporting Actor although I would give it to PSH. I'll puke when Jessica Chastain wins for Best Actress. Best actor has to go to Daniel Day-Lewis. Hugh doesn't have a chance. Best picture goes to Argo.
How was the Jambalaya? Clooney to party win, lose,or draw.
Whoops, I meant A Royal Affair.
I'm with you, mate. She's super Christy, right?
Good evening Bivalve. How have you been?
I'm on to the ABC-tv official red carpet bollocks now.
Correct BD. Rather obnoxious too.
That's what we're watching.
Evening, Bets. Great choices there. I haven't seen A Royal Affair yet; it's on my Netflix list.
Was a Royal Affair about Prince Charles? LOL!
Evening, boys. We're all stuffed from our French feast, rooting for Les Miz. We're going to be disappointed, though, I'm sure.
I did not see it, but I heard positive opinions. Many thumbs up!
Hey Bob, thought I'd join in a little early. I'm totally with you for Wes Anderson on Screenplay.
For best picture, I'm thinking Argo or Life of Pi, I'd be happy with either of them.
Also got your back on Day-Lewis for best actor.
Don't know about the rest though. I'd be okay with any of the supporting actor and actress nominees.
Slightly disagree with the use of the phrase torture porn for Zero Dark Thirty, but I wouldn't pick it for any of the catagories, partly since it kind of screwed up this date I had a while back.
The French feast sounded delicious. Les Miz might get some music and setting awards. Not the big ones, though, IMHO. I'm going to see it on Tuesday night.
Evening, Eric - great to have you around this evening. You are a true movie geek.
Jamie Foxx has a weird looking tux on.
Good evening Eric . Great to have you on board this evening.
Wahay - it's Daniel Day Lewis classing up the joint.
Is it the one he had in django? That was hilarious.
He sure does.
DDL looking dashing! He's so geeky and yet so sexy...
I'd have a snog with him.
I agree . Great to hear from Daniel Day Lewis. Jaime Foxx is wearing an all black ruffled tux.
Rather naughty, BD!
Crap. Fox should've come in that puffy Blue tux from Django.
I definitely would have during his Last of the Mohican days.
Love this commercial for Hyundai with the kid rounding up other tough kids for a football game.
Ah - you go for the long flowing untamed locks, eh Bets?
Missed the commercial.
Good thing about this award show - no chance of Kanye West showing up to interrupt proceedings with his crazy ego.
Rooting for local boy Seth Mac. Looking forward to some outrageous humour and wild RI accents. How about every time he goes New England, we all drink!
Kristin Chenowith is definitely getting up my nose now. Bring on Seth MacFarlane.
The LOB trophies being polished!
Renee - when are you going to do a third Bridgit Jones' Diary movie?
I'm definitely up for that drinking game, Bets. I'm about to shift over to Maker's and ginger for the show.
I agree. No need for her to be rude to the drunk Renee Zellwigger. Also Kristin is the worst dressed person at the Oscars. A phony too. I will stop here before it starts going South!
Did Kristin finally have that vein on her forehead dealt with? I don't notice it at all.
I would love to see Queen Latifah take on Kristin Chenowith in a boxing match. I would pay to see that.
Could be Bets. Next, her massive ego?
That would be quite an event, MUR. Do you suspect some Botoxing, Bets?
Watched the last 11 minutes of red carpet . . . TRAIN WRECK!
Kristin did NOT just diss the mighty Longhorns, did she? Someone needs to take the bitch out.
Good evening WHR! It wasn't just the last eleven minutes. She did , Bets. I picked Queen Latifah to take her out. Bob agreed. How about you?
Evening, Johnno. I agree - some ABC execs are now on the chopping block for that travesty. I never thought I'd wish to see more of Joan Rivers and Ozzy's kid.
I do believe that she did, Bets. Maybe she's an Aggie? Do I smell a catfight?
I would participate in the drinking game, but we only have one beer in the house. We drank plenty last night.
She's a Sooner, BD!Now that the Aggies are in the SEC, the Sooners and Longhorns are football rivals.
Just did some Internet research - Chenoweth is an Okie.
Here comes the big show - and Seth!
BD, I hope you are holding on to that Maker's before it getsall watered down. Here's Seth!
The Oscars start. About bleedin' time.
We have one lonely Rolling Rock in the house.
If Kristin actually went to U of Oklahoma in Norman, I'd actually have some more respect for her, but she apparently attended Oklahoma City University.
Got the Maker's and ginger at the ready, Bets.
And... Seth's going outrageous. Yes!
I wish I'd seen more than two of these films.
Never heard of that school, BD. Some "fake" university because she couldn't get into a real one.Make sure you keep your balance later this evening after all those Makers'
Nice - a jab at Chris Brown and Rihanna. I like it.
Me too, WHR. I will try to contribute, but not sure how much help I will be.I agree, Bivalve.
Which two, Johnno?
Seth has been Rick-Rolled by Shatner.
Me too, BD. I like the jab at Meryl. Love the elderly Captain Kirk. Better than Seth. Love the headline.
Mac's a little uneven so far. Not as much as Shatner, but still.
The shot of Naomi Watts was priceless!
Getting very weird.
They should have just had Shatner read some dialogue from the nominated films.
The highlight of the evening.
Searching for Sugarman . and Zero Dark Thirty
Shatner would be a better host than Seth.
You know, for a song called "we saw your boobs", didn't see much boob.
The hell is Tatum doing there?
Mine were Moonrise Kingdom and Life After Forty.
Do love Seth's voice, though goofy.
Getting weirder now...
Eric, Seth was the only boob I saw.
I like the dancing couple . . . Seth has a nice voice. . .
This whole monologue is far too meta for its own good.
It sure is.Even weirder with the cartoon pilots drinking.
The only host I've liked recently was Hugh Jackman. Real star power and likable.
I agree, BD. Time for the awards.
I wouldn't mind watching him.
Here come the clones.
Oh dear, painful!
Seth and Kristin are as unlikeable as they come.
Very painful. Bring on the twenty minute tribute to a film editor I've never heard of.
Harry Potter can move . . .
Mediocre host is a rather generous rating for Seth.Getting really ridiculous!
Is Seth better than Franco yet? I can't tell.
He can sing too.
Seth isn't quite as stoned as Franco.
I disagree with Shatner. Go straight to the show.
Steve: Only one relieved about Seth's performance is Letterman.
Joaquin looks rather non-plussed.
Nice one, Gooner.
Was it Bradford or Swansea?
Good evening Steve, I agree 100%. I agree too about Joaquin.
Best Supporting Actor now - tough one.
Swansea won 5-0 Jonno. A record margin of victory in a League Cup Final and any Wembley final
Yay - pulling for Philip Seymour Hoffman here.
Picks for Supporting actor?
Tommy Lee was pretty fabulous as well.
I guess Tommy Lee Jones
I can't understand anything this guy says
One prediction!
Bugger - it's the Austrian again. Didn't see Django - not interested.
Steve: UNBELIEVABLE! THE ONLY ONE I HAD AN OPINION ABOUT!
Christoph Waltz. Not sure about that pick.
What was Steve's opinion on that one - did he pick Christoph?
Waltz was great, but he'd already been rewarded for that. Move along.
No Bob, he didn't want him to win for that movie.
Classic picture of Jack stoned and napping. Priceless! He seem surprised.
No Bob, he didn't want him to win for that movie.
I just don't like Tarantino rewarded for his movies until he gets out of his juvenile phase.
I would have picked Tommy Lee Jones.
I second that, Bob. He needs to grow as a director.
I would love to see Melissa McCarthy hosting the Oscars.
Turning the computer over to Katherine . . . will try to reclaim later.
This bit was stolen from at least 5 mediocre SNL sketches.
No win for The Simpsons? That's actually refreshing.
Not sure if that was a deserved winner.
I agree Eric.
I want to hear Katherine's favorite movies!
I'll defer to all of you who watch animated movies on these awards.
Ach aye - kilt alert!
Ah, a category we are heavily vested in in this house. And it's Brave for the win! Yes!
The girls saw Brave.IT WON!Jacquelyn is pleased.
What'd Witherspoon win the oscar for?
Bivalve and I seem to agree with the award for animation.
Here you go, Bets - it's the Les Miz moment.
Walk the Line
Thanks.
I am not sure. Good that she's only presenting.
Reese Witherspoon won for portraying June Carter Cash in the Johnny Cash biopic "Walk the Line." She was actually really great in that.
Going for Les Miz.
Thanks Bob and Bets. That explains it.
Come on Life of PI! (Or Argo)
Haven't seen "Life of Pi" yet, but I loved the book. Wasn't sure it could be filmed, though.
"Something a 9-year-old can do"? You douche!
The youngest Best actress nominee ever. Well done! That Seth joke was in really poor taste and offensive.
He sure is , Eric. Would love Queen Latifah to kick his ass.I would pay to watch that.
What? No Thor? No Black Widow? Meh, I'm okay with that.
Quevenzhane was amazing in "Beasts."
On with the techie awards.
That's what i keep hearing Bob. Wish I'd caught that.
Life of Pi for the Achievement Award. IS it deserved?
Me and Dad: Edgar Winter did the score for Life of Pi?
Has he spoken a full sentence, or just a string of phrases?
Everyone's acting up there but Sam Jackson!
Too many cooks spoiling these awards.
Another techie award for Life of Pi.
The Life of Pi wins yet again.
Bill and the girls saw Life of Pi twice, and tell me that both awards were well earned.
I agree about too many cooks spoiling the awards.
Another for Life of Pi. is that a jinx or the beginning of a Juggernaut like Hugo?
A bit cheeky - the awardee is played off by the theme from "Jaws."
The Jaws theme as "shut up" music. Too funny!
I can't really see it. It's really an outside choice for the major awards. But it does look pretty spectacular visually from the clips I've seen.
Funny but kind of obnoxious. Hope Mac gets that later on.
The Jaws music was definitely classic.Hilarious that it was shut up music.
Me too, Eric. I wish he had earlier.I hope this is Mac's last year hosting the Oscars. He's been horrible.
Elizabeth likes Jennifer Anniston's red dress.
The problem is that everyone expects too much from Mac. Put him behind the scenes. Give him some people to write with. Don't make him go out in public.
The bloke on stage can;t read. Go back to school! Jennifer is not amused.
We're drooling over Jen's dress!
Here's one that Les Miz could actually win, Bets. Costume design.
Costume design. Indifference thy name is Dahlgren.
Sound like a plan, Eric.
Nope - it goes to Anna Karenina - a rubbish version of a classic story IMHO.
Anna Karinna wins best Costume.Indifference or not!
She holds a remarkable resemblance to Mrs. Hughes. Short and sweet accptance speech, though.
The speech was short and sweet. Just the way I like them.
There you go, Bets - first one for Les Miz.
Les Miz gets thrown a bone.
Les Miz wins for makeup and hairstyling.
That's just sad. All the work those dwarves put into their hair.
Another short and sweet speech. That's more like it
David: Stop stealing Bob's bit.
Yowza, Halle Berry!
A tribute to the Bond movies. They're my favorites. Glad to see it
Halle is looking a bit Grace Jones tonight.
