Giggsy's Last Stand?
Join me this afternoon to celebrate the career of Ryan Giggs. The Manchester United player-manager has named himself on the bench today, so it will likely be the last time he appears as a player (and as a manager) at Old Trafford. Although there will be plenty of nostalgia today, there is real business at hand, if one considers Europa League qualification real business, that is. I'll be on hand this afternoon to watch it all with you.
203 Comments:
Great atmosphere at OT this evening and NBC is right on it with their coverage.
The really interesting team news this evening:
United - Twilight, Valencia, Jones, Smalling, Buttner, Carrick, Fellaini, Januzaj, Lawrence, Kags, Wilson. Subs: Mata, Giggs, Vidic, Yashley, RVP, Meane, Amos.
Hull - Jakupovic, Bruce, Davies, Figueroa, Elmohamady, Quinn, Koren, Meyler, Rosenior, Long, Boyd. Subs: Fatty, Fryatt, Livermore, Jelavic, Sagbo, Harper, Faye.
United old boy Brucey returns to OT with a Hull side on a real high, with their highest Premiership place and a Cup Final berth.
They're actually resting a couple of players for the Cup Final - Huddlestone, Livermore and probably Jelavic.
On the United side of things, there are two new faces in the side from the youth team - Tom Lawrence and James Wilson up front. Should be fascinating to watch their debuts.
Good afternoon Bob. I am looking forward to Giggsy vs Brucey.
Oh - almost a perfect start from Wilson who nearly got on to a Hair Bear knock down.
I noticed those unfamiliar names. Is Giggsy trying to send a message?
Afternoon, MUR - your new boy nearly scored minutes into his debut.
And now Janu has gone down under Figueroa's challenge. Looked a penalty to me and Trevor Francis agrees with me.
Great to hear. Sad how Hull City can make the EL, but probably not us.
I'm trying to get a link and there it is.
There it is.
Meane must be another one from the youth team while Ben Amos Cookie is the reserve keeper.
Kags had a shot blocked for a corner.
Happy Teacher Appreciation Day, mate. Are you feeling well appreciated today?
I thought that both 6 and 7 in the Prem plus Hull would make the Europa - not so?
All this possession and not a bloody shot. Hair Bear waited forever to shoot.
Thanks mate. We had a few goodies in the teacher's workroom this morning
Good stuff from Tom Lawrence there - nearly made a quick name for himself.
It's 5and 6 plus Hull City in the EL this year.
I think the new manager should start some of the youth team if he can't get replacements for the first team players
Vidic to come on as Jones has injured his shoulder.
Got it. That's Phil Jones' day done after he's done his shoulder in. Straight down the tunnel for treatment and we're about to see the last appearance of Nemanja Vidic a little earlier than we'd expected.
Trevor Francis speculates that that injury will keep Phil Jones out of the World Cup. Was he ever considered for the squad? Not mine!
Trevor seems especially cranky this afternoon.
I'm home from school as Vidic is about to come on to replace Jones and make his last ever appearance at Old Trafford. Thanks for the great years
He might have been as a utility player. He might be the 22nd or 23rd player in Woy's squad. Like you and UWS, I would not pick him.
Standing ovation for Vidic as he comes on. Lots of appreciation for him and rightly so.
Good afternoon, UWS. I agree with you about Vidic. Not how I would describe Jones.
Agreed, Bob.
That's true - England managers do love those Swiss Army Knife kinds of players. I've never discovered Phil Jones' best position, have you?
UWS will be unhappy to hear that United have not played with pace. Lots of possession with no end product.
It's not "Boot-ner." It's "Byoot-ner!" Respect the umlaut!
Great round of applause for Vidic
I saw your talk about the Europa League spots
England have three spots in the EL. The league only has one spot and both Cup winners.
Citeh won the LC so 6th got the spot. Only if the two of the top four are Cup Finalist
I'd be fine if Wayne Rooney were rested for the World Cup at this point, wouldn't you? We need him firing on all pistons.
SLOW SLOW SLOW
Jones is kind of like Madeley, playing several positions.
Afternoon, UWS - and Happy Teacher Appreciation Day to you!
Do these young 'uns look ok
I told Bob the same thing about the EL. Gave the same explanation.
Were Giggsy and Brucey all cuddly before kick off
They are not any worse than what we've had playing this season. Worth giving a chance.
I missed that. Bob might know.
I know he is, but what's he really good at? That's what I can't quite figure out.
Janu is shouting for another penalty against Figueroa again. Handball this time. No dice.
I don't know the answer to that question. A Jack of all trades and master of none.
It was hand ball . How was that not a penalty?
First time not in Europe since 1989!
Didn't see any cuddles between Giggsy and Brucey before kick-off. Perhaps at the final whistle?
He dove
Is OT half empty?
I hope they are just not fair-weather fans
Really poor that United are not in Europe.
They might be protesting. Hasn't it been full all season.
GOAL
Wilson scores his first goal for United on his debut
Sweet finish
GOAL! Wilson scores his debut goal - wow!
Get a better number James!!
47!!
Jan wins a free kick that he will take.
GOAL !!!!
HAIR BEAR HEADED ODWN THE FREE KICK FROM JAN AND EIGHTEEN YEAR OLD JAMES WILSON SCORED ON HIS DEBUT
Again - Hair Bear is the provider. I don't know why he hasn't been pushed up further this season. Moyes should have known that was his strength.
Are you watching Roon, Chicha, and RVP?
So a win here and a loss for the Spuds in their last match would put you lot into the Europa.
And Gooner would be laughing about that one.
What a stunning comeback yesterday
Suarez was crying in his shirt forever!
NBC's coverage was brilliant. They just stayed at the ground and watched the players' reactions and the fans
Spuds host Villa on Sunday. Would they blow that one?
Of course, Citeh could think it is all done and lose tomorrow!
I saw some of that - remarkable match and coverage!
I feel for Stevie G. who should have won one title in his career. No sympathy for Suareaz. I hope he's still crying in Brazil in June when England meet Uruguay.
I recorded the match. I saw that . I can't believe Pool would blow a three goal against the lowest scoring Prem team with o9nly a dozen minutes remaining.
Villa might still have something to do on Sunday. You never know.
I agree 100%, UWS. It's been a really odd season. I agree with Bob about Stevie G and Suarez.
I take that back - I see that Villa are safe on 38 points. Too bad. I'd love for them to nick some points off Citeh tomorrow.
Hair Bear picks up a yellow for a tasty challenge.
They might . Away to Citeh and the Spuds. I am betting against the soft serve Vanillas., but you never know.
DId you seen Ronaldo's mule kick goal?
As for La Liga…. who know who will win!
All three dropped points AM 3 Barca 2 and RM 2
AM 88 two to play
Bar 85 two to play
RM 83 three to play
Favorites…. Real Madrid!
Barca host AM on the last day. A win by Barca would put them above AM on head to head and would leave Real to get one more point
The Vanillas just might tomorrow. One of my bruvs could be celebrating with vanilla ice cream/
United won't beat the Saints
I sure hope so, UWS. I picked RM in the PPP. Sounds similar to the Prem race.
I am not expecting that they will. Lucky if they get a draw.
Other than the goal, it's been a really boring first half.
Saw the Skippy goal - real quality.
United are hopeless going forward!
Not great value for the punters, no.
A friend at work showed me the goal. It was really spectacular and could prove to be vital as made it Desmond late in the match
United don't get it in the box!!!
Other than the goal they haven't
Naughty by Smalling.
Another STUPID foul by Smalling..SMALL BRAINED!
Half time
Bloody useless
Halftime and United lead 1-0 thanks to a goal by eighteen year old debut boy, James Wilson.
Not a great performance from United but they're leading. 1-0 at the half.
Here's another debut goal for United to savor, lads. Remember this one?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OdkXPZgb7N4
You are being too kind on Smalling. You must be in a really good mood today.
Definitely a trip on Jan . United should have had two pens in the first half.
Great video of Giggs goal… even though it cuts out before it hits the net
DID YOU SEE THE PACE!!!!
Totally agree… definite pen… .scissor tackle that didn't bet ball but did get man
Remember, Ryan Giggs used to name… Ryan WILSON
More Giggsy magic. #7 is my favorite.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CmHgHgZxM5Q
Watching Giggs playing got Salford v Blackburn… Giggs was tall and lanky
I remember that he was originally Ryan Wilson. Coincidence?
I still believe that United should start some of the youth team players next season to make a point.
Away we go
The second half is underway.
STOP SUCKING UNITED!
Free kick chance for United
Meyler fouls young Lawrence just outside the box and is booked for that
Hull have made two changes now.
Lawrence is lining up this free kick now....
Weak effort
Oh - Wilson tried an acrobatic effort there after Janu played it in.
Into the wall by Lawrence then Valencia finds Jan and his cross is hooked just high and wide by wilson
If Giggsy comes on then we would have Old Wilson and Young Wilson on the pitch?
Daniel Mann forgets the Umlaat yet again.
Why does the red of United and the gold and black of Hull not clash in Hull but does in Manchester
SLOW SLOW SLOW
Agreed.Jones is a thickhead.
Great save by Jakupovic from Jan. He catches the corner.
Decent effort by Jan
"first save of the match"!!!
I'm not sure why the colors clashed.
United were slow in the first half too.
283… where did I come up with that number
Put yourself on Ryan and take a pen
I agree with Trevor that Giggsy should come on the last fifteen minutes to get a proper farewell.
Great run by Janu. He's been the find of the year for you lot.
Great run by Jan and a slide tackle by Meyler results in a United corner.
He sure has. Next , Wilson and Lawrence.
Hasn't played much as of late
Bloody hell… another handball there
Well, where did I get the number 283
Dunno - you, MUR?
United still taking ever to get the ball in the danger area
MUR?
RVP warming up...what's the point of that?
GOAL! It's Wilson again - he's got a brace!
GOAL
Felani misses his chance to finally open his account for United but saved and there is Wilson to pop in his brace!
United attacked with pace!
YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!
JAMES WILSON WITH A SECOND FOR UNITED AS JAN RAN DOWN THE RIGHT PAST CURTIS DAVIES. HE PASSED TO HAIR WHOSE SHOT WAS SAVED BY JAKUPOVIC AND YOUNG WILSON SLOTTED IN THE REBOUND.
Again - Janu and Hair Bear were the providers. Hair Bear probably should have scored but Wilson bagged the rebound.
And now the Stretford End are singing "Wilson for England!"
Just for Bob……
WILSON FOR BRAZIL?????
Who needs RVP. We've got Wilson. Are you watching Wellie and Wilson?
Last time
283?
I 'm not sure about the significance of 283.
I 'm not sure about the significance of 283.
Goal… Fryatt with a nice shot… 2-1
GOAL! Matty Fryatt from out of nowhere!
Wilson off for RVP
BUGGER!!! MATTY FRYATT SCORES A WONDER GOAL FOR HULL CITY. THEY ARE BACK IN IT AT 2-1.
James Wilson trudges off after scoring a brace. Fantastic night for him.
OK 283 is the sum of all the United shirt numbers on the pitch!!!
Wilson with a magnificent debut, is replaced by RVP. I hope RVP got some pointers.
Nice one, UWS.
Young Wilson is off. Will Old Wilson come on?
Ryan starting to warm up
The man of the evening is warming up now.
He's warming up to the delight of the United fans. I would love to see him come on.
AND score
He is coming on as he's taken off the tracksuit.
Janu sets up Hair Bear once again and he blows another one.
Useless by Hair Bear after a great run and pass by Jan.
Hibs fall behind at Ross County… they could be joining the Capital rivals going down
Useless effort by Felani
On comes Giggs!
Young Tom Lawrence coming off to be replaced by the player/manager.
The old for the new as Giggsy is on for Tom Lawrence in what may be his farewell appearance at OT.
I want a pen and RVP better insist that Giggs takes it
I agree.
RVP has done naught.
Giggs is appealing for a penalty there.
Penalty again!
Great run by Giggs….. shot blocked with the hand
Giggsy has a shot deflected off a one with Kags and Jakupovic beats Hair Bear to the ball.
Definite handball by Young Brucey.
Young Brucey would only get a game in the Premiership for a team managed by his dad.
Agreed, Bob.
Lovely rendition of "Giggs Will Tear you Apart" by Joy Division at the Stretford End there.
Hull City counter off a useless United short corner.
This rendition of United will try their best to blow this one
Great save by De Gea and luckily the rebound didn't find a Tiger
Oh - Twilight saved United's blushes there denying Meyler.
Great save by De Gea from Meyler as El Mohammedy got past Giggs and his cross was headed away before the save.
RVP… wide… what a horrible season by Robin
Oh - Twilight saved United's blushes there denying Meyler.
Just wide by RVP on the following possession.
Wow - an LOB stutter sandwiching two comments. I think I set a record there.
Jake Livermore on for El Mohammedy.
I'm off, lads - it's been good!
I think that is a record sandwich. Excellent!
Cheers Bob. Have a great afternoon. It was great chatting with you.
RVP straight at Jakupovic.
Take care Bob
Hull's last point at Old Trafford… 1924!
Another record to fall?
Useless by Kags… can't make a three yard pass
GOAL
RVP WITH THE GOAL
Assisted by Giggs…. great pass
YESSSSSSSSSSSS!!!! RVP FINALLY SCORES. NICE PASS FROM GIGGSY , RVP HAD A SHOT BLOCKED BUT PUT THE REBOUND AWAY.
United lead 3-1 with three minutes plus stoppage time remaining.
Smalling does his best to score an OG… saved by De Gea
3 added minutes… come on Ryan
Horrible stamp by Meyler on Jan. He could have been sent off and will surely will be suspended for the beginning of next season and possible the Cup Final
Figueroa fouls Kags just outside the box
Myler is just a modern day footballer
IGNORANT!!!
Free kick chance for Giggs… come on!!
Tipped over…. bloody hell Keeper… let it in
Jakupovic superbly tips over the free kick from Giggs.
party popper indeed
Fellani SUCKS
United going backwards
Stupid foul by RVP
same old same old
It's over and United win 3-1 thanks to a brace from debutant, James wilson
That's it
United finish their home season with a win
Well done James Wilson
I am off to college
Talk to you tomorrow if you're around
TTFN
Cheers UWS. Have fun. I'm not sure if I'll be around.
NBC going to show United's lap of appreciation… gotta go though
