The First Big Match-up of the Season
Morning, chaps! The season is only a couple of days old and we've already got our first big match-up. It's Arsenal v. City from the Emirates. It doesn't get much bigger than that. The undercard match ain't bad either - Liverpool starting their campaign against the Happy Hammers. So, fix yourself a strong cuppa and join me here on the LOB.
360 Comments:
Good morning, Bob. Up to join you for the action. Got the coffee brewing.
Morning, MUR. How are you mate?
Morning all
Teams in the tunnel and coming out now
So this is our first chance to see Liverpool this season. I've picked them for the title this season. They were already good and they've added to that mix a quality goalkeeper in Allason and a quality midfielder terrier Navi Keita.
Teams in the tunnel at Anfield as it's Pool and the visiting Hammers. A Hammers debut for Jack Wilshere and for for former Citeh boss, Pelligrini
The teams out on the pitch enjoying a spot of Gerry and the Pacemakers now:
Liverpool: Alisson, Alexander-Arnold, Gomez, Van Dijk, Robertson, Keita, Wijnaldum, Milner, Salah, Firmino, Mané. Subs: Karius, Clyne, Fabinho, Henderson, Sturridge, Lallana, Shaqiri.
West Ham: Fabianski, Balbuena, Ogbonna, Rice, Fredericks, Noble, Wilshere, Masuaku, Antonio, Felipe Anderson, Arnautovic. Subs: Zabaleta, Snodgrass, Adrian, Obiang, Hernandez, Yarmolenko, Diop.
Referee: Anthony Taylor.
Great . Thank you for asking. How is everyone this morning?
The famous Liverpool song .
YNWAL ....wish United had a great song like this
West Ham fans trying to out sing them
Jurgen all business on the bench - not singing along. Does he not know the words?
Too much chopping of the camera
I spoke to my brother, who is a Pool fan, and is excited about their chances this season and their signings.
They're off from Anfield.
Of we go as head strap boy Milner gets us underway
And we're all set to go now - Liverpool get us going in all red; West Ham in their white away kit.
Saints vs Burnley also underway
What's with Milner's headgear?
First chance for Alexander-Arnold to swing a cross over. Overcooks it.
Is it an LUFC Academy headband?
It's not going to happen but I'd love Liverpool fall flat today!
I hate to say that I like how Liverpool play and I wish United played that way. Of course, they need to stay on 18 Championships for a long time yet
Just got back from feeding Sparky and Fred.
Milner got a head injury during one of the last preseason games
I agree with everything you just stated, UWS.No reason why United can't play that way. They have the players to do so,
Pretty soon I have to take Shadow for a walk. He didn't have one yesterday because of the constant rain !
I'm hoping that West Ham Rising might join in this morning. I nagged him a bit about it. He sent along his PPP predictions late and I told him I'd accept them as long as he dropped by for the match.
Didn't realize that Flappy had signed for the Hammers.
Hope Shadow is okay. It's difficult to get Sparky out for any little bit of rain, which we could really use.
Arnautovic wins a corner for the Hammers.
Arnautovic wins a corner after a lovely move. A chance for the Hammers.
poll counter off the corner from Wilshere , but a last ditch tackle prevents a shot on goal.
Oh - Mane nearly in there from Milner's cross.
Flappy had to be alert to a through ball as he got a paw on it just before Mane could get a shot off.
Oh - great cross over again but no one got a touch.
Great cross from Milner, but neither Bobby nor Mo could Mo could divert it in for an early leas.
One nIl
Salah is at it again
Why can't United play like this
Fast, attacking and good to watch
GOAL !!!! MO SLAH PUTS POOL IN THE LEAD WITH A SIMPLE TAP IN . SAMMY KEITA PLAYED IT WIDE LEFT TO ANDY ROBERTSON AND HIS PASS WAS PUT AWAY FOR AN EASY TAP IN.
My GBB off the mark
Trent Alexander-Arnold with the first booking of the match. not sure if it;s for the tackle or the three names.
Would love to see United play like this.
In truth, that goal was coming. Liverpool could have scored a couple already. It's all pretty simple. Someone knocks it wide to A-A or Robertson, a good ball in and there are two or three guys feasting on it.
Bobby F wins a free kick for a less than Noble challenge about 25 yards from goal.
I was thinking the same . it seemed Inevitable that Pool would eventually score.
Oh - nice free kick there from A-A. Tipped around by Flappy. It's all red traffic right now.
Flappy does well to turn away one free kick from three names. Masouaku heads away the corner from Milner.
Oh - Wynaldum benefits from Keita's weaving run. Nearly stabs home Liverpool's second. The Reds are rampant here.
Wijnaldum shoots just wide after some great foot work from Twinkle Toes Keita.
Arnautovic drags a shot wide off a superb long ball from Ogbonna.
Arnautovic gets free for a moment and runs on to a great ball. The angle was too acute though. Wins a corner.
Arno with a chance for the Hammers.... doesn't go close
Header from corner straight at Liverpool's #13
Decent chance from the header by Valbuena. Straight at Allason.
It was actually given as a corner and Valbuena with a free header straight to Allison
I didn't think the angle was good looking at all!!
Ha! Good math joke, UWS!
Still 0-0 in the battle of wits between those geniuses, Sparky and Dyche.
West Ham at least trying to make this competitive.
Nice one, UWS. Definitely not acute.
Southgate in attendance. Was at OT Friday and at Molineaux yesterday. Should have enough time to make it to the Etihad today too if he wants.
Jon Champion said that Wilshere is starting a match in August in four years. He's had a struggle with injuries in that time period.
https://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/football/babb/11691493/Partick-Thistle-unveil-utterly-terrifying-new-mascot.html
What a save... Salah should have number two
OH!!!! A close range block by Flappy from Salah off a pass from Bobby F.
Oh - another chance for Salah. He could have had a hatful already.
Leeds United get a shout out!
I missed that. Wonder what was said about Leeds.
Salah raced on to a headed pass , but Flappy was really alert to gather in time.
Flappy to the rescue again for West Ham. He's kept the Hammers interested in this one. Otherwise it could already be a cricket score.
Milner?
Or they are going to win 46 league games this season!
Into stoppage time as the Hammers win a corner.
Wilshere two for two on corners leading to Pool counters.
GOAL !!!! MANE OH MANE AS POOL SC ORE IN THE LAST SECOND OF THE HALF TO GO TWO UP.
GOAL! Mane knocks home the second. A touch of offside perhaps but it's allowed.
2-0 Pool!
Two nil.... West Ham were all just standing around!!
Not offside with the new rules even though I don't like the rule that Mane was miles offside to his his defender but ball didn't go with him
Great by Milner
Last kick of the half
Liverpool two up at the half
Off to the loo and walkies
This one is over!
It was a long possession off the corner from Wilshere It culminated in a cross from Robertson being cut back by Milner for an easy tap in by Mane.
Me too. Time for walkies for Sparky.
The more things change, the more things stay the same. Neither Noble nor Wiltshire are athletic enough to play against the big boys. Why Antonio thinks he doesn't have to work back to cover on the left side is beyond me -- the first goal came from his laziness to cover. In the past, he better knew his role. This is the third year in a row we've been drawn away to start the season against one of the top clubs. Not fair.
Bad morning, all. Bad morning. Grrrrr.
Back from walkies and ready for the second half.
Good morning, John. How have you been? Sorry about the first half. It seems like the Hammers will probably be a mid table side this year
Second half underway a s former LUFC player, Snoddy , has come on as a sub for the Hammers
Came on for Declan Rice , which is an attacking switch.
Morning, WHR! Great to have you on board! Sorry it hasn't gone your way. But you know what brings a team good luck? Being on the LOB!
:-)
I've been well hope you have too, David.
West Ham have brought on my old LUFC friend, Robert Snodgrass.
Van Dyjck clears for a Hammers corner. The last one led to a Pool goal.
Snoddy takes this one and it's headed over by Antonio.
Doing well. Thank you for asking.
There will be easier matches than this one for the Hammers.
What do you make of Manuel Pellegrini, Johnno? Are you a fan?
Antonio booked for one two footed challenge on Three Names.
GOAL !!!! MANE OH MANE! HIS SECOND POOL GOAL PUTS POOL THREE UP.
Did Snodgrass come on for someone or are we playing with 12
GOAL! Just as the Hammers seemed to be putting together some decent play, Mane strikes again.
3-0 Reds
Offside by a yard
Ridiculous that we don't have VAR
Ha! That would help, WHR; however, Declan Rice made way for Snoddy.
It started with that free kick in the Pool box from the foul by Antonio. Milner made a run, passed to Bobby F, and he passed to Mane , who made a superb 180 degree turn and scored with a great finish past Flappy
Apparently the refs are going to vote again for VAR in February.
Balbuena booked for a foul as the Hammers are becoming frustrated.
Sorry about that , John. This one seems done and dusted, but the Hammers should be okay if they do well against the mid table and lower teams.
Two of three Liverpool goals have had more than a touch of offside to them.
Back from a brief trip to the bog. Did I miss much?
I really didn't see anything wrong with any of the goals. The Pool players are really great at timing their runs.
Peroxide blond, Chicha, on for Anderson.
Anderson comes off and your old OT mate Chicharito is on for him.
Milner has a pass cleared for a corner taken short then headed away. Wijnaldum then called offside.
I love our new right back, Fredricks, and Anderson. But we won't compete against any of the big boys with Noble and Wiltshire in the middle of the park.
Balbuena trips Mane just outside the box. He needs to be careful as he's on a yellow.
New boy Balbuena is getting mighty close to a second yellow now. This has been a tough introduction to the Premier League of the Paraguayan.
Into the wall by Salah and Wilshere is down as he blocked a really powerful free kick
Oh - I think that Wilshire is a good pick up for West Ham. I know the scoreline looks bad but there is enough in the WH performance to suggest that they'll be okay this season. There will be a lot worse sides than them this season.
Ha! Wilsthire and Noble both racked -- they are mirror images of each other. I love them dearly, but how can you play them both?? David, how's the third not offside?
Chicha is an old mate, but I hardly recognized him due to his new look.
Mane a yard offside for that third goal on the replay. The Hammers will definitely feel hard done by.
Another new signing, Yarmalenko, on for Arnautovic. That's a real quality player being substituted.
Big Marco Arnautovic comes off now - he was feeding on scraps today but looked sharp enough. Yarmolenko on for him.
Balbuena clears a pass from milner for A Pool corner. Mane heads over from the corner.
Sure, we will be safe -- but YAWN . . . our inability to win trophies or to compete with the big boys makes it all a bit boring. If we could start at home against big boy, or away against a small club to get the season started would be much more entertaining way to start.
Hendo on for Bobby F as Klopp aims to solidify the midfield area.
Bobby Firmino comes off and England man Jordan Henderson comes on for him.
Wilshere called for a foul on Mane about a foot away from the corner of the box.
Definitely. This was always going to be a tough place to start for West Ham. Probably your best chance of silverware is the League Cup. Hopefully Manuel will prioritize that.
I am back from a walk with Shad
That's understandable, John. Hopefully, the appointment of Pelligrini as manager is a sign that the Hammers want to improve upon their previous placements.
Welcome back, UWS. How was walkies?
Hiya John
Nice...not too hot either
Mane one goal away from being sole GBB. Did anyone pick him?
A rare mistake by Alisson there. Otherwise, he's had a good debut for the club. Of course he could have been back there cooking up a pot of feijoada during most of the first half.
anyone pick Mane for first hat-trick?
I picked Salah
All Burnley at St Marys
Wish we had some of that weather.
I think I picked Salah too.
Still 0-0 in that match
Cech starting in goal for the Gunners. Thought Leno would start.
You cannot tell me any team in the Premiership need to have two Nobleshires -- they have the same Championship skill set and same Premiership faults.
Wijnaldum called for a late challenge on Wilshere.
Teams are out for the last match
Arsenal
Cech
Bellerin
Sokratis
Mustafi
Maitland-Niles
Guenddouzi
Xhaka
Mhiki
Ramsey
Ozil
Aubameyang
City
Ederson
Walker
Stones
Laporte
Mendy
B Silav
Fernandihno
Gundogan
Mahrez
Aguero
Sterling
I agree - but perhaps it's time for Mark Noble, a loyal servant, to move to a Championship side.
Premier League
I would say that you described half the Prem teams and think they are better than the teams in the Championship. A lot, as with other teams, comes down to level of commitment and motivation. That's what cost the three relegated teams last season
So, a couple of our PPP participants picked Phil Foden, the young English defender who lit it up at the U-17s a while back, to be Young Player of the Year. How is that going to happen if he never gets a game?
Benches
Arse
Elneny
The Gazette
Torreira
Lichtsteiner
Holding
Iwobi
Leno
City
Bravo
Company
De Bruyne
Sane
Otamendi
Jesus
Foden
Liverpool need one more to go top
United down to sixth
So glad I took that picture of them being top on Friday evening!!
Mark Noble has started for the Hammers since we were in our mid 30s. He's definitely a legend , but as you stated, it's probably time to move on.
Doesn't Jose know that goals could be as good as an extra point?
You're still higher than your city rivals at this point, UWS!
Not sure. That's why I didn't opt for Foden and picked Sane instead.
That's back where we were in Jose's first season. He was told to do better or else!
Some young fella comes on the pitch to give Salah a hug
Apparently getting arrested because of the boos around the ground
Mane coming off and Shaqiri comes on for his debut
Mane replaced by the Angry Gnome, who is making his Pool debut.
Shaqiri comes on for Liverpool. I had forgotten about him. How on earth does he fit into this side?
Klopp like Clough, has Robertson as a threat down the left.
Alison dives to push away a cross from Yartmalenko.
I think the Angry Gnome is going to be used like today, where he comes off the bench late in matches.
Do we all have to pronounce Alisson's name "Al-ee-sohn," the way pretentious commentators are, or can we just do it the Elvis Costello way?
Is that enough of a role for a big time Charlie like Shaqiri, the Maradona of the Swiss Alps, to come off the bench in the 80th minute or start in the League Cup matches?
Balbuena with a slide tackle for a Pool, corner as Danny Sturridge on for his first Pool appearance in ages, in place of Salah.
Sarah comes of to a nice ovation. The forgotten man Danny Sturridge comes on to replace him. Another player who should be looking for greener pastures.
Four nil
Sturridge scores with his first touch!
Or perhaps not - he scores with his first touch. 4-0.
Again, Liverpool already are three goals better off than United
RUDDY NORAH ! STURRIDGE SCORES SECONDS AFTER COMING ON OFF THE CORNER. AN EASY FAR POST TAP IN A SPOOL GO FOUR UP.
Liverpool are now on top
So that's 10 PPP points for me, ta very much. Can I call the engravers yet?
Fourth consecutive match vs the Hammers that Pool have scored four. I guess this is the Hammers bogey team.
Okay, lads, I'm off. It's vacation time and I'm heading to the beach for the day. Enjoy the big match! And to confirm, I'm not a robot!
Probably in about nine months , mate.
A trio of stoppage time minutes
Cheerio, John. Enjoy your beach day - it sounds like a perfect Sunday idea.
Cheers, John. Have a great day and great chatting with you.
Allison with a rare save.
5Live has asked the question....where is Arsene Wenger today?
Don't think he's in the stadium
It's safe to say that Pool have Hammered the visitors today.
If I were Arsene, I'd be a million miles away from the Emirates. Feet up, not watching the football.
Like John, will Arsene be at the beach?
It's all over and Liverpool, one of the title favorites is off to a brilliant start.
It's over as Pool Hammer the visitors 4-0. Pool's 500th Prem win.
All over at Anfield.... are you watching Jose?
Ends goalless at St Mary's
The Premier League has had just as many nil nillers inside 9 matches than the World Cup did in 64!!
Burnley should have easily won tho
Apparently Arsenal have a left fullback crises so Welbeck has been training in that position
The new Ashley Young?
5Live says the City warm up tops are atrocious!
The Spurs shirt had a map of north London?
First Arsenal match that Wenger won't be watching since 1997!!!
Back from a refreshing shower to watch the beginning of a new era for the Gunners
Teams in the tunnel and here they come
Not sure about Wellie at left back. I think a match vs Citeh is not the time to experiment .
In the Scottish Premiership,Rangers two up vs St. Helen Mirren, but a man down. St. Johnny one up vs Hibs at the half.
The two Spanish managers sportingly greet each other as they're underway for the EM
We are off.. the Post Wenger Era begins..... will it be more successful than the Post Fergie?
Love to see City get beaten today!!
Citeh in all black with their glow in the dark socks. Arsenal in their traditional kits.
Steve McManamum caught on mic saying
"I don't like Wolves"
Getting grief and calls for the sack
That's a great question. It will be interesting to see. Definitely hoping for a Gunners victory today
Aubama brought down a La Porte.
New signing, Guendouzi , who played for the Emery Board at PSG, down and Sterling booked for a less than Sterling challenge on him.
You hear that? Özil’s home country is Turkey. He was born in Gelsenkirchen, dumbasses.
