The First Saturday of the Season
Nothing beats the feeling of waking up on the first Saturday of the football season. We've got the whole arc of the season ahead of us. First up this morning, it's Spurs against Newcastle. Then we get the usual 10am EST kickoffs, including the NBC Spurts match Huddersfield v. Chelsea and a full Championship schedule. We then end the day with Championship title holders Wolves kicking off their Premier League campaign against Everton and my beloved Leeds on a road trip to Frankie Lampard's Derby side. Come on in and join me for a cuppa and a natter this morning.
633 Comments:
Morning, everyone! First up, Spurs v. Newcastle. The inactivity of both sides in the transfer market has compromised the usual opening-day optimism, yet you could argue both sides had a decent summer. Newcastle kept Rafael Benitez, and Spurs are still the employers of Mauricio Pochettino, Harry Kane, Dele Alli, Christian Eriksen and others.
The teams gathering in the tunnel now:
Newcastle (4-2-3-1) Dubravka; Yedlin, Lascelles, Clark, Dummett; Shelvey, Diame; Ritchie, Perez, Kenedy; Joselu.
Subs: Darlow, Schar, Manquillo, Ki, Atsu, Rondon, Muto.
Spurs (4-2-3-1) Lloris; Aurier, Sanchez, Vertonghen, Davies; Dier, Alli; Sissoko, Eriksen, Moura; Kane.
Subs: Vorm, Alderweireld, Walker-Peters, Dembele, Amos, Son, Llorente.
Ah - this is a familiar feeling. I've got a cuppa at my side and the teams are coming out at St. James's Park. Marvelous!
Good morning, Bob. It was really difficult getting up. The coffee is a brewin'.
Morning boys...I'm knackered!!
Went to a movie last night and then dinner. I then hung around in the casino waiting to bring Matt home
Off we go
This morning starts with The Toon vs the Spuds underway from SJP.
We're set to go, then. Spurs get us underway in their odd away strip, with Newcastle in their traditional stripes. Derek Rae and Robbie Mustoe on the mics.
Spurs starting away for the 8th straight season! That means Arsenal have started at home that many seasons as well!
Good morning, Dave. I feel the same.
Morning, fellas - great to have you on board. I appreciate your waking up early on this first Premiership morning.
WOW! That's an unusual coincidence for both North London clubs.
What movie ddi you see, UWS?
Cheers. Great to enjoy the pleasure of everyone's company.
The thrilling thing about a number of matches this weekend is that I have no idea who I think will win them. This is a case in point.
Identical Strangers
Matt Ritchie more like Lionel with that long range effort.
Well, if Spurs are away then Arsenal are home.... 8 in a row doesn't sound random to me
Not familiar with that movie. Sounds like a good one.
Definitely not. If it is that then that's rather bizarre.
I'll start off with a prediction. Spurs to win today at SJP by a score of 1-2 .
Nice run by Lucas Mora... he looked very good preseason
I picked him for my fantasy team I have with my boys
I have a lot of United players...even though I am not confident about any of them
Mora was on my bench this week
Dubravka turns around a long range effort from Eriksen. It seemed like it was headed wide.
GOAL... Spurs have scored thru goal line technology
Vertongen... it is great that there is no controversy
GOAL! Jan Vertonghen somehow nudges the ball over the line from the corner! Or should it go to Davison Sanchez who had the initial header?
In any case, Spurs are 0-1 up!
GOAL !!!! MARTIN ATKINSON'S WATCH SAYS THE BALL HEADED OVER LINE DAVINSOIN SANCHEZ HEADED ON THE CORNER FROM ERIKSEN THEN VERTONGHEN DIVERTED THE SHOT JUST OVER THE LINE AS DUBRAVKA WAS JUST TOO LATE TO PREVENT THE GOAL
I don't know that film either, UWS. Any good?
It is a documentary about triplets reunited and it was a all a experiment
1-1....great start to this one!!
GOAL! Newcastle strike back almost immediately through Joselu!
GOAL !!! JUOSELU TIES IT UP FOR THE TOON
Marvelous cross in from Ritchie and Joselu just had to nudge it into the corner. Great start to this one.
1-1!
Great cross!!
I was listening to the radio the other day and they were talking about the penalty area line is the new byline for crossing. Players don't go to the byline any more.... they cross early
Mostly hopelessly
Yeltsin played the ball wide to Matt Ritchie and his superb cross was glanced in by Joiselu as the locals are Dancing on the Ceiling.
We're wide awake now, aren't we chaps?!
All the England players playing but Trippier...where is the Bury Beckham
Glad I woke up early despite still being tired and not exactly wanting to listen to Derek Rae.
I found the movie very interesting and disturbing what people did with people's lives
Not exactly, Bob, but I'm trying.
Sounds like a must watch.
That's a good point , UWS. Bury Becks main competition is Aurier, but thought he would start.
I was originally going to predict a 1-2 Spurs win, but it may now be higher scoring.
Aurier booked for a nasty foul on Jon Jo
WOW !!! It's been a five and a half years since Vertonghen scored a Prem goal.
WOW.... TWO ONE SPURS!!
KEEP THIS SEASON GOING!!!!
Delle Ali!!
GOAL! Dele Alli with yet another headed goal! Wow!
United are still top because of the alphabet!
GOAL !!!! NICE CROSS FROM AURIER AS DELLE ALLI SANDWICHES IN TO SCORE WITH A FAR POST HEADER TO GIVE SPURS A 1-2 LEAD./
The defenders appear to be on strike this morning. I'm fine with it. Another sumptuous cross over and the England man did the business at the back post.
1-2!
Football - it's a simple game, eh? Put a good ball into a dangerous area and you're going to get results.
I always liked alphabet soup, but in the Winter, not now.
Definitely , Bob. All the goals have been perfect examples of that
It will be difficult for Bury Becks to get back into the starting lineup after that superb assist from Aurier.
Wow...just great goal line tech....."Certainly over the line"... by a MM
As I stated, I was predicting a 1-2 Spurs win, but it's already that. It will almost definitely be higher scoring than that.
A do Rondon don a do Rondon
perhaps
PPP red card watch. Both Swansong and I have picked Jonjo Shelvy to get his marching orders in this match. Swansong has already one a point for Jamie Vardy scoring yesterday, so that's a good omen.
Just starting to get light outside.
Nice tune, UWS! I just had a little sing song here at the Cottage with that one.
Spurs are looking really good, with no signs of early-season rust. That’s the big advantage of having no new players I suppose.
His time head their Swansong in May. BOOM BOOM!
Wasn't that the Toon that Derek Rae was mentioning?
Teams don't necessarily need new players. United don't , just that Little Joe needs to do a much better job with what he has.
Boom boom, mate - you're already on fire the first Saturday morning of the season.
Vertonghen concedes an unnecessary corner. Will the Toon take advanatage?
Nice corner from Matt Ritchie headed away then a long range effort from Paul Dummit is just wide.
Yedlin looks a liability at right back to me. I don't approve of managers trying to convert wingers into defenders.
Agreed, Bob. This is part of modern football. The Gooner has mentioned that about Yeltsin for the past few seasons.
This third kit for Spurs costs 110 quid
Cheers, Bob. Still sleepy, but still have it in me.
YIKES!!!! That's quite a few Bob for a third kit.
Aurier would have been a good shout for the first red card - he looks like a bull in a china shop this morning.
I hate it - you couldn't get me to pay 10 pence for it. It doesn't have anything to do with Spurs colors. It looks like a bridesmaid's dress - an aquamarine nightmare.
He gets a lot of yellows, but seems to always do just enough to avoid being sent off.
LOL, mate. Didn't see anyone wearing anything like that at your wedding.
That is true, mate. We were kind.
Kane looks interested today; he wants to break his August duck. Wins a corner.
Kane should have done better there!!
He doesn't score before October!
Harry Kane is Abel to win a corner. Has never scored a Prem goal in the month of August
Oh - Davison Sanchez in at the near post and nearly scores Spurs' third!
Big miss by Sanchez... sounds like United's Sanchez
Davinson Sanchez has a free header off the corner from Eriksen and should have done better as he heads wide.
I have a new season resolution
Nice one, UWS. Very true, indeed.
Kieran Clark volleys well wide after some Spursy defending from a free kick from Matt Ritchie.
What is the resolution?
To ignore all MUR puns!
Do tell, UWS!
Ouch!
Eric Dier picks up a yellow card for a fairly innocuous challenge.
Kenedey was a real Dier as he had been tripped and the Spurs player was booked.
It will be tough but I think I can do it!
That's not a resolution, you always do that. Shouldn't it be not to act like Jose, LOL!
How do I act like Jose?
Don't compare me to the Boring One
I don't think you can, but sounds like you gave yourself quite a challenge. Just a reminder it's a long season and there will new and more of these puns.
Not the boring one, but the grouchy one.
His teams are boring
Into stoppage time. A pair of those minutes,.
Can't stand to think of United being so boring
First half winding down here. Of course Spurs will be pleased but Newcastle won't be that downhearted. They're still well into this match.
You and him are grouchy. You not quite as much, LOL!
Some of his comments after the match.... saying that he didn't get his players so he is now the coach not the manager
Spurs leading by what I thought would be the final score, not the halftime score.
That is that for the half
Entertaining half of football
It's halftime and the Spurs lead 1-2 after an entertaining half.
I'm off to make my bagel then.
Off to make a crumpet
Hearts and Celtic are scoreless into first half stoppage time up north
Back from Brekkies and ready for the second half.
Enjoying my bagel right now. How's your crumpet, UWS?
Second half underway from SJP.
We are off for the second half
Same again please...both teams attacking
Got busy..didn't make it yet!
I had a bowl of cereal.
Newcastle right back into it, then.
Oh - Diame hits the post!
OH!!!! A close range effort from Diame crashes off the post. Desmond nearly made an arrival.
The post gets hammered by The Toon. That was a rocket
What kind of cereal do you favor, mate?
I agree with Robbie Mustoe. There is no point for teams bringing in new players if they don't improve the team. Why bother?
OH!!! Nearly 1-3 as Aureir crossed a and a volley from Delle Alli was cleared off the line.
Oh - Dele Alli nearly onto the cross - might have done better with that half chance.
Kennedy... what a pathetic touch...you're a professional!!!
Oh - now Kenedy is in but his first touch was too heavy and he allowed Lloris to get to it.
Lloris was quick but the touch was elephant like
You would've buried that chance, eh UWS?
Delli Ali with a great touch there
Delle Alli misses a sitter. Throughm but shot straight at Dubravka as Yeltsin was way out of position. The Kernedy rounds Lloris and guilty of a poor touch
Hopeless corner.....were back to that crap?
Second one just as bad!!
STUNNING
I would have buried that one BD
Surprise there wasn't a booking there for Yeltsin as that was a foul from behind on the break. He sure defended like Yeltsin.
GREAT SAVE!!
Oh - great save by Dubravka from Sissoko.
OH!!!! Superb close range save by Dubravka from a volley from Cissy off a cross from Ben Davies.
Both teams TRYING to score!!
Are you watching the Boring One?
Better corner....just by Eriksen
Dubravka acrobatically turns around a cross/ shot from Aurier then Davinson Sanchez like Alexis as he's well over with a close range volley
Joselu booked for a foul from behind with a poor chllenge that was real Dire challenge.
Great pass and Toon were almost in... corner
Rondon coming on to a nice ovation
Davinson Sanchez with a last ditch tackle on Joselu for a Toon corner. then Joselu replaced as the subbed has Runned On to the pitch
Here comes the Rondon song then. He's on for goalscorer Joselu.
What a great save by Lloris
Oh - Lloris bails out Spurs again!
Some real Spursy defending off the corner and Lloris is forced into a close range reflex save
Kenedy definitely not emulating JFK with that long range effort.. Really poor one range effort.
Kane doesn't look sharp at all
I think Tom picked Newcastle to go down...not on this performance
Asprilla makes the all time Newcastle greats
I don't think so
Tom might have been calculating in the rift between Rafa and the owner.
According to Derek Rae, it was a swap between Runned ON and Dwight Gayle . Was Raffa stating that Dwight Gayle was playing more like Crystal?
Hearts take the lead against Celtic
Hearts and Hibs were top of the first week of the Premiership(not Premier League)
He was a great player, but definitely not the caliber of Super Mac and Shearer.
Ignoring
I did love that Asprilla, David Ginola, Les Ferdinand side led by King Kev. Should have won the Premiership.
actually it is has been the Premiership in Scotland since around 2012. It used to be called the Premier League
Mike Ashley has a point... Rafa sign a contract and then I'll get you players.
Why spend money and then he buggers off and a new manager doesn't like the players that Rafa bought
Potch was caught on camera there scratching his naughty bits. Kate was offended.
Kane in the book... just as bad as Richie's tackle a minute before but he got no card
If I'm going to be ignored then what is the point in typing comments? Don't mean to be rude, but I woke up really early to chat . Is this the thanks I get?
I know it is
I am trying to make a point to Bob
He refuses to call it the Premier League south of the border
Very stubborn
Premiership doesn't sound right to me any more
It used to be called the Premiership but not for years!
Reading everything...apart from the puns... mate
Matt Ritchie not best pleased by being subbed. Someone handed him a water bottle and he THREW IT ON THE GROUND! (See the SNL sketch)....
I haven't been criticizing other people's comments with intentional put downs and have been complimentary about other people's comments , so I ask for the same in return. Am I being too unreasonable?
Stubborn is my middle name, mate. I'm still calling it The Fairs Cup!
hahaha.... nice on Bob
Premier League
Just a reminder that the puns are only about one to two percent of the comments, not the majority. There is some good material if you read really carefully.
I'm loving the puns, MUR - keep them coming.
Not putting down anyone
As I understand, It's Premier League South of the border and Premiership North of the border since around 2011 or 2012 and that one of the first decisions of the new Premiership was to relegate Rangers down three divisions. Dopes that sound about right?
Hey, as you said...not a new resolution... I was trying to ignore them sitting in the Cottage
Sounds right
We need to work together MUR to get our esteemed leader to get the name of the league right....his team will be playing in it next season!!
Bob, will you call it Premier League if Leeds make it?
Thanks, Bob. Wasn't sure about it.
I did predict Leeds to win promotion, so hopefully, we can get the rivalry going again.
ouch...mentioning Kane's chance to make it two nil!!
Again, it was called offside but it would have been overturned with VAR
Sure thing, UWS. That's a reasonable compromise. However, that would mean losing the PPP acronym. It would become the BPLPP Game. Not as good, really.
Don't know if you noticed Bob but I changed all the categories to Premier League in my predictions
What is the PPP
Premiership Predictions ?
If there aren't any more goals then I will be correct on my prediction.
Our favorite South Korean is getting prepared to come on for a late cameo now.
DEAL.
Let's all hope for correct name usage!
Useless by Eriksen
Oh - Ericksen got free on the left and tested Dubravka from an acute angle.
You could keep the PPP acronym and change Premiership to Premier?
Stop using all this WC tiredness crap
They all went to private islands for a month
PPP stands for Premiership Plus Predictions game, plus being the Championship and European categories.
Shame there have been no more goals
It has deserved more
United still top!!
Number One Son being sandwiched on to the pitch and as things stand Alli has delivered the knockout punch.
This one to end Desmond
Huddersfield give their supporters false hope
West Ham frustrate Pool for a point
Arsenal and City share the spoils
Perfect weekend!
I didn't know what it stood for!!
Interesting
Meanwhile Muto, a Japanese international, is on for Ayoze for his Premiership debut.
I'm really surprised by all of the commentary on the World Cup tiredness factor. I don't remember that in year's past. Of course if a player came back from the WC or Euros with an injury, that's one thing. But these are professionals. They shouldn't need more than a month off.
I haven't had a month off and I'm ready for the new semester = totally match fit!
Sorry. Muto on for his Premier League debut
Have we started the season earlier?
I am sure you are Bob!!
Also, "Premiership" corresponds nicely with the "Championship" below it. Never mind the L1, L2 and so on.
I'm old school. I'd like it to be the First Division, Second Division. I hate the branding!
Agreed with both of you. I don't remember World Cup tiredness being mentioned after any previous World Cups, or at least not to this extent. It may be a factor after next World Cup.
I am, mate. I could teach for 90 minutes with no problem at all.
I think this season has started at the normal time . The Football League always starts a week earlier, but all leagues seem to be starting around the normal time.
Oh - off the bar! How did that not go in for new boy Rondon!
Rondon hits the crossbar after a wicked deflection!
OH!!! A close range header has runned off the bar as Desmond is not being allowed into SJP>
