A Friday Evening Cracker!
TGIF, LOBers! I've made it through another week of the semester and am settling in to enjoy another Leeds match. We haven't won every match this season, but I've loved every thrilling minute of it. Bielsa's Leeds team are so much fun to watch, I can't wait for the next match to come along. This afternoon, we're at Villa Park to meet Aston Villa, who've been flying so far this season. It should be an absorbing affair between two sides who only know how to attack. Based on my patented rubric, we only need a point from this match, as Villa were a bottom half side last season. Come on, you Leeds boys! #MOT!

A very good Friday afternoon, everyone. The last time we played at Villa Park, in December 2018, we came back from two goals down after 17 minutes to win 3-2, Kemar Roofe claiming the last-minute decider.
I'd certainly take a repeat of that scoreline!
Team news out of the Midlands tonight:
Aston Villa: Martinez, Cash, Konsa, Mings, Targett, Douglas Luiz, McGinn, Trezeguet, Barkley, Grealish, Watkins.
Subs: Steer, Hourihane, Traore, Nakamba, Engels, Elmohamady, Davis.
Leeds United: Meslier, Dallas, Ayling, Koch, Alioski, Struijk, Helder Costa, Klich, Rodrigo, Harrison, Bamford.
Subs: Poveda, Roberts, Casilla, Raphinha, Hernandez, Davis, Shackleton.
Referee: Paul Tierney (Lancashire).
Good afternoon, Bob. Glad you made it through another week. COME ON LEEDS! "steal victory from the Villains."
Kemar Roofe scored for Rangers in the EL , but wouldn't be able to get a game for Leeds. That shows Leeds progress since Bielsa took over
We'll have to make do without the injured Kalvin Phillips tonight. Pascal Struijk moves up from defence to deputise; Ezgjan Alioski comes in as the only change to the XI sent out for the defeat by Wolves on Monday evening. So Luke Ayling will partner Robin Koch in the center of the defense with Dallas and Alioski at fullbacks.
Welcome, David - hope your week has been good.
BLOODY MONSTER JAM ON NBCSN
Welcome, Dave - how are you, mate?
Hi guys - this is Kate. I have a question for you. Can you explain why Bob, who has always referred to her as "Rebecca Lowe," is suddenly calling her "Becky?" Should I be worried? ;-)
Good afternoon, Dave
Doing well, thank you for asking. We call her Becky so I don't think Kate will have any worries
Marcelo on today's match: “We would prefer Kalvin Phillips to be here of course. He will be missed. We will try to attack in numbers, as we always do, and try to create as many chances as possible.”
Thanks for having my back, David!
Wahay - teams about to come out at Villa Park. Come on!
I'd be worried Kate!!
Cheers, Bob. I heard that 46 defeated 45 last night. Is that correct?
Leeds wearing Tom's favorite kit... the Black and Green stripes
Teams out on the pitch at Villa Park
Luke Ayling leading out the side tonight in the continued absence of Liam Cooper.
It is a nice one - I'd have that one as a stocking stuffer, in case Santa is listening in.
Again, I will only be here for the first half
Picking up Kath from work, dropping her home and then going to go eat with friends Walt and Joe
Beautiful weather in ENY BTW
Peacock leaving the stadium.... stay at the ground!!
Will Villa go top?
Will Leeds go third?
Hot and sunny in South Texas this week, but it's supposed to be pleasant next week.
Bob would look in that shirt!
Are you reading, Kate?
Crazy stuff, Dave. Nobody expected that at the start of the season
And we're away - come on, you Leeds boys!
Had to turn off 5Live because it is so far ahead of the Cock...good description!
They're off from Villa Park
Nice description , Dave
Ali gives Patrick something to chase early doors.
COME ON YOU GREEN AND BLACK STRIPES! STEAL VICTORY FROM THE VILLAINS
The Clough derby kicked off 15 minutes earlier than the Prem match
Still scoreless
Oh - another chance now for Helder. Shot blocked out. Good bright start for us.
I should have been in Glasgow right now....bloody Covid
Helder Coasta with a shot blocked that WAS Targetted for the goal.
Good start from Leeds.
Ollie Watkins threatens but it's well defended.
Oh - Patrick should have hit the target there from Ali's cross!
Nice cross.... bury that Patty
Just made it back from a trip down to the in-laws. MOT!
Kate, nothing to worry about. It's like my J-Lo fascination. I knew in my heart that she was a gun-moll, so there was no need for Melanie to worry.
OH! Bamford with a great chance as he heads a cross from Ali wide. Should have scored
Great pressure from Leeds!
GET A SHOT OFF
Really nice one-touch stuff from us around the area now. Loving it!
Good afternoon, Steve. Very well stated. I told Bob the same
LOL! Nice one, Steve - welcome!
Disappointing that Lord Bamford spurned that chance.
Can you believe the goal concede by Arsenal last night.... modern day football!! The manager was okay with that kind of danger! He encourages it!!
Blows my mind!!
If you have players standing on the edge of the box ready to pounce after the kick is taken...GO LONG! GO semi Long
Welcome Steve
Steve - Kate's also a bit worried about DJ Trish, who has been sending me huge loads of CDs recently.
I need to pick up Elizabeth from the grocery store. Will be back before halftime.
I saw that goal. Really embarrassing. Glad Arsenal came from behind to win.
I thought that Ross Barkley had shoved over Helder but nothing doing for us.
Hiya chaps. Odds on Jack Grealish to attempt to cuddle Sian Massey when he takes a throw-in?
Steve, would you want to see Ozil at DC United?
There are rumors
Rodrigo almost wth a chance...get it down to your feet quicker lad
Late one there on Grealish. Someone will probably pick up a yellow. It's Struijk.
Grealish is down...I think he is fine....a bit of play acting!!
I would keep possession now
HE WASN'T HURT AT ALL
Definitely odds on for that one. Jack's a flirty one for sure.
DJTrish is a force to be reckoned with, Katie. More Glenn Close than Becky Lowe however. Beware of unexpected pots simmering on the hob.
Struijk again - he'll need to watch himself now.
Oh - I thought that Rodrigo had scored there! Great move!
How did that not go in!!!
Deflected wide!
I actually think it would be called back for offside
Oh yes. I'll take an Ozil move to anywhere out of the prem. Have you heard about his organized fans from Nigeria that are flooding the readers comments of every sports website? It's crazy. But yes, we'd have him at the Audi.
Ali tries one from distance from the corner. Well held.
Oh - Rodrigo could have had another - should have had!
Leeds definitely on top....so they should be!
They have been better than Vill for THREE seasons at least
Another chance!!
Come on Leeds...BURY IT
How are we not 0-1 up already?!
Glad to hear
Oh my, there are just so many chances for Leeds. One or three of these must go in soon.
They should have been in the lead vs Wolves too!
Cross deflected out for a Villa corner now.
Oh! Ali's touch stopped a 5 on 2 break for Leeds.
And note to Leeds. Standing off Barckly is not a good tactic.
Oh - the ball fell to Patrick there but his shot on the turn was scuffed.
Bamford has had a much better start in the Prem than I thought he would.
He missed some many chances last season.... you know what I called him
I agree, Steve - Villa definitely have some weapons this season. I've got my eye on Trezeguet who looks really tricky.
Oh - almost a suicidal moment there. Ayling bailed the side out.
Geeeez....what was that straight to the striker!!
MADNESS
Some activity on the Leeds bench now. Shackleton appears to be coming on. Struijk might be off.
Leeds hae to make a change....the bloke that has been booked....it is tactical... 20 minutes in
Bielsa clearly not happy with the Dutchman. Wow!
Going staring to the corner of the of the pitch
Their goal last night was just another nail in the coffin for playing it forward from the back. Leno was so tentative. I just don't understand how if 3 of them are standing on the 18-yard line how not one of ours further down the field isn't open. It drives me crazy that we keep getting unnecessarily pegged back. I hate it.
Oh - another neat move ends with a daisy cutter well wide from Stu Dallas.
My thoughts exactly!!
It sounds like Arteta tells them to play out from the back no matter what!!
Utter craziness!
We won't play again for ten days after this one, so I'm hoping that Kal and Coop are back by then.
Phew - cleared off the line by Ayling!
phew....off the line!!
Modern day media....they get in their mind that a player is ALL THAT....everything the do.... brilliant!
Oh - another through ball there broken up by Meslier. Quick off the line.
On Fotmob...it says Phillips.... shoulder, Early December!
That's not good....he's on my fantasy team!
Another great move there broken up. Love to see us flying forward.
This building from the back is a nonsense. DCUnited are even at it and it's a calamity in waiting.
I don't think that our players are suited to it at all. Not Leno, not Luiz, not Bellerin, not Tierney. I can remember that Gabriel showed a bit of calm class dealing with a hospital ball in from Leno, but the face he made at Leno was exactly the one I was making as it transpired.
Someone else says November 21st match vs Arsenal
Not good at all. Wonder when he picked up that injury - I didn't see it in the Wolves match.
Oh - Patrick was nearly in there from Jack's cross. Corner now.
Patrick gets his head to the corner but puts it over. And he took a knock on that one, too.
Everyone in the game loves it though Steve!
Why are we smarter?
Defenders are normally not as skillful as others...stuns me
But it is all the rage!
I know high school teams doing it....they can't put is a pass where it belongs from 5 feet. The fields they play on are crap...but....IT HAS TO BE PLAYED OUT OF THE BACK
Jamie Shackleton is having a really good Prem debut. Another great Academy product.
Half time viewing
I just got this from my brother-in-law Jon s
https://youtu.be/Cq8wC7LFyQs
I’m probably late to the party, as usual🤔, but just found this song by The Shins, titled and part about MILDENHALL. It seems the songwriter and performer was an “airforce brat” at the base. Reference to the Jesus and Mary Chain suggests the mid 80’s. 😀
I'm alright with playing it out of the back as long as there is no danger. But there's a time to lump it into the stands.
Strap Jack up like Beckenbauer if the back up is Struick. I've only seen him twice so far and he looks a long way from playing competently in the Prem. Leeds is actually his first top division club period. Jong Ajax was his only other club.
I agree Bob but it gets played out of the back EVERY TIME even with three strikers standing outside the box ready to pounce as you pass the inside your six yard box!!
Madness!
Yeah - that song came out a few years ago. James Mercer, the lead singer and main songwriter for The Shins is a Brat. Good tune - I had it on my annual playlist that year.
I would hate to watch youngsters being taught to do that. Defenders are better footballers than they were in the 70's but they're still standing so close to the goal that there's such a slim margin for error.
That's the kind of thing that makes no sense. A risky ball that Rodrigo miscontrolled and suddenly we're under pressure.
I like it!
Of course, you had seen it!
Oh - come on, Rodrigo! Hit the target, my son!
EVERY TEAM has to play that way....it is the modern game!
I just finished watching the vid!
I liked it
Mildenhall
Corn Exchange
I like it
Free kick from Villa comes to nothing.
Oh - that was a close call in the penalty area. Phew!
Back from picking up Elizabeth to see I didn't miss any goals. Was Jack Grealish fouled in the box?
Phew. I felt certain that the ref would give a penalty for that. Good refereeing to see that as a Jackflop.
greallish just dives EVERY time he is touched
I think there has to be retro punishment for cheating..... it would stop!
Not a penalty Grealish went over theatrically off minimal contact from Helder Costa as L:eeds have helder on
Ayling saved one off the line
oooooh, Bamford....hits it wide!1
Oh - that would have been a brilliant goal but Patrick put it wide!
OH! Bamford misses a sitter off a great cross from Jack Harrison on the counter
THAT HAS TO BE BURRIED!
I don't agree with the guy about taking it with your left...that was an option but just open your hips open and it is in!
Agreed about Grealish . Refs need to book players for diving after VAR checks. It's frustrating that they never do
5 minute sin-bins would stop the Grealishes of this world.
A minute of stoppage time
Late free kick now for us. Let's make it count!
Taking with your left would have maybe caused a whiff.... I would have done what Bam did but again opened my hips
Leeds player Kliched for a Leeds free kick. Barkley heads away the free kick and it's 0-0 at the half
Wasted free kick.
That's it
Half time!
That's it for me boys
Best of luck for the second half. I will be following it on 5Live
TTFN
0-0. That was very entertaining. Hoping for a few goals for Leeds after the break.
Half time arrives. I'm off to towel myself down. It's been breathless stuff again from us, equal parts thrilling and suicidal at the back. 0-0.
Cheerio Dave.
I'm back for the second half now. We were surely the better side in that first half but our finishing let us down.
Come on, you Leeds!
Cheers, Dave
The second half is underway from Villa Park
No changes at the interval then.
COME ON LEEDS!
Good early cross in from Ali but no one was attacking it. Collected by Martinez.
Oh - Jack did so well there to bring the ball down from Ali and then to jink inside for a shot. That was similar to the goal he scored against Liverpool.
Emmy Martinez with a comfortable save from Jack Harrison
I wonder what Bielsa's halftime instructions might have been? More of the same, better finishing. MOT!!!
Oh - now it's Ali who shanks one over from another good move. This is killing me!
That's what I'm assuming, Steve. Not much more to say really.
Ali shoots well over on aa possession that started with a great tackle by Ali on John McGinn
Oh - a great run by Grealish ends with a super save by Meslier!
PHEW! Grealish goes on a really long solo run then cuts inside the box and his close range shot i blocked away for a corner by Meslier. Poor tackling by Helder Costa led to the run
Ali is shoved over and is somehow yellow carded.
Corner out for another. Ali booked by card happy John Moss
Oh - another fine save by Meslier!
Meslier superbly tips over a volley from Ezri Konsa off the corner
Superb save from Meslier!!!
Next corner Kliched away as Tyrone Mings was booked. Not sure why
YESSSSSSS!!!!!!!
Great break and Lord Bamford mops it up!
0-1!
WAY HAY! LEEDS TAKES TH ELEAD ON THE BREAK. MARTINEZ SAVED FROM RODRIGO AND BAMFORD TAPPED IN THE REBOUND . QUICK OINE TOUCH PASSING FROM ON SIDE OF THE FIELD TO THE TOHER
Congratulations Bob. Leeds now in nosebleed territory. Do you need some kleenex
YES! It's been coming. Excellent counter and overload on the left opens up Rodrigo for a shot and Bamford snaffles up the rebound. More of that please.
Lord Bamford needed that one, his fourth of the season.
Free kick now - we've got our tails up!
I really like how we're swarming the Villa players when they get the ball. That's classic Bielsa.
BT#, it's Tierney who is the ref today. Like John Moss, but less sweaty and out of position on a counter.
Bob, you must need kleenex as this is nosebleed territory for Leeds. I have extra boxes if you need any
The hour mark arrives. I'm not sure how Bielsa plays this one. Ordinarily this would be a time when Pablo or Tyler Roberts might come on. But maybe not tonight.
Knife in the teeth time. No let up.
Thanks for the clarification, Steve. No wonder why I was thinking of John Moss
Real nosebleed territory. But we'll need the points as our program leading up to Christmas is frightening.
Oh - I thought that Robin Koch might have just stabbed it home there! Another chance goes begging.
Koch a Hoop as a Kliched cross was diverted just wide as Leeds nearly went two up
Oh - it looked like Mings had taken down Patrick. Mings is really angry and pushes him over again. Surely that should be a second yellow.
VAR check on the penalty chance now. And Patrick is getting treatment. We can't really afford to lose him.
WTF Mings? That would be a red, but it's got to be a second caution.
Patrick is trotting off now for treatment. Back on now. Phew!
Traore on for Trezeguet now.
They're reviewing the wrong incident. Tings has to walk for going after Bamford on the ground
Oh - would you look at that!!!!!
That large tropical fish for Villa has evidently entered the action.
That one was for Tyrone Mings. Patrick goes vooom!
0-2!
CLASS from Bamford. A touch, opens his body and leaves Emi no chance. 2-0!
And now Patrick is on a hat-trick. Wow!
Grealish gets a yellow now - my evening is complete!
GOAL !!!LEEDS GOES TWO UP AS kOCH PICKS UP A LOOSE PASS AT THE HALFWAY LINE THEN kLICH GOES ON A RUN AND FINDS bAMFORD HIS AND lEEDS'S SECOND WITH A SUPERB FINISH IN THE D
Jack Grealish talks himself into the book , which shows how much Leeds has frustrated Villa
Free kick chance now for us. We can take our time with it. Knock it about a bit.
Agreed about Tyrone Mings. What was he thinking with that nastiness on Bamford?
Definitely suffering from high altitude now. I did not expect any of this from today - or this season, for that matter.
Villa in jeopardy of losing their perfect record this season.
Oh - almost a third again there with Stu Dallas behind another nice move. He's the full-back you know.
Stu Dallas shoots straight at Martinez. Great tackle by Rodrigo on Jack grealish
Oh my stars!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I am in dreamland here. Dreamland.
It's a hat-trick!!!! Tally-ho, Tally-ho, Tally-ho Lord Bamford.
GOAL ! WOW! BAMFORD WITH A SECOND HALF HAT-TRICK. NICE ONE TOUCH PASSING THAT STARTED WITH RODRIGO AND BAMFORD TRIPLE TEAMED SCORES WITH A SUPRB FINISH
Somehow Patrick is now on six goals for the season, challenging the big boys at the top of the charts. Who would have thought that after his misses in the first half.
Villa with a shot Targetted out for a corner off a pass from Jack Grealish
Barkley with a long range effort that sums up their evening.
Agreed, Bob. This is crazy stuff. This must be Leeds best position since David O'Leary was manager
Rodrigo gets knobbled by Barkley and we've got another chance from a free kick. Rodrigo fancies it.
Barkley fouls Rodrigo about 25 yards from goal
Tell you what though. The strategy of standing off Barcklay gives me the heebie-jeebies.
Another sighter for Rodrigo - and he gets the hook from the gaffer. Pablo on for him. Shame that Pablo didn't have a chance at that free kick.
Free kick from Rodrigo well over and that's it for him as he's replaced by compatriot, Pablo Hernandez
It's Ole Football time for us now, just having a bit of fun.
