FA Cup Fourth Round Weekend!
Finally, I'm back in Blue Devil HQ for a footer weekend after much rambling. Unfortunately, it'll be Arsenal rather than my beloved Whites against Yorkshire rivals Huddersfield on Sunday, but I'll make the best of it. It's Chelsea v. Everton at the crack of dawn and the Cup action doesn't quit until the 1976 Cup Final replay between the Saints and Red Devils. I'm counting on you to join me for the fun.
708 Comments:
I'm back at 7:15 am EST. It looks as if FSC isn't going to show any preliminaries, just straight into the match at Stamford Bridge at 7:30. I'm looking around for a link to something good.
Still no links but here are the line-ups for the match at Goodison, not SL, this morning. I'm a wee bit rusty at this:
Everton (4-5-1): Howard; Neville, Heitinga, Distin, Baines; Coleman,
Arteta, Fellaini, Rodwell, Bilyaletdinov; Saha. Subs: Mucha, Hibbert, Jagielka, Beckford, Gueye, Osman, Baxter.
Chelsea (4-3-3): Cech; Bosingwa, Ivanovic, Terry, Cole; Ramires, Lampard, Essien; Malouda, Drogba, Anelka. Subs: Hilario, Mikel, Ferreira, Kalou, Bruma, McEachran, Sala.
Alright I'm up. Don't want a total gym.
Good morning.
Alright, the Chuck Norris/Christie Brinkley infomercial has gone off. Maybe we can get some coverage now.
Morning, Someone. I'm skipping the Total Gym this morning as well. I'm my usual slovenly self. Nice to chat with you.
Rematch of the 2009 FA Cup, which was my wedding day so I got to see a bit of the first half and Jo's early goal.
Good to see Bily get the start. I'm sure we'll be seeing Jagielka and Beckford off the bench.
Looks like Luis Saha has been to the hairdresser's this week. An extraordinary Cup tie barnet there.
I hope JB does the biz for you lot off the bench this morning. Kick-off!
Fellaini causing some havoc in the Chelski area early doors.
Long ball stuff Cech to Drogs there.
Everton giving some early presure. Very sunny in Liverpool today.
Sunny, but cold, I suspect. How's it been in Columbus?
Cloudy, chilly and damp in central Ohio. The NYC area seems to be getting more snow than WNY this year!
Yeah, it's been that way for a couple of years now. The East Coast have been smacked with these "Snowpocalypses." We just get a steady stream - usually around 90 inches a season.
Everton are playing the ball about really nicely.
Fellaini's touch has been good today. He rarely misses a pass.
No shots yet, but Everton's keeping the ball in chelsea's end.
Nice cross over from Bily but Coleman didn't find anyone with his knock-back.
Oh - Bily might have done better with that header on from Rodwell. A half chance, perhaps.
Not much on that shot by Bily. Everton off to a solid start, but can they finish?
Lamps knocks a teasing free kick over but it's cleared out for a corner.
Chelski starting to turn the screw a bit. Terry with a decent header over the bar there.
chelsea giving some pressure of corners. Decent defending by Everton.
Good morning BD and Someone.
Ball through the everton crease, lucky to not have a chelsea player tap in the untouched ball.
Drogba sent a pass across the box , but nobody was there to connect.
Morning, MUR - great to have you on board.
Everton will be without Cahill, who is playing in the Asian Cup Final later this morning.
The match between Swansea and Leyton Orient is underway. Villa and Blackburn start at the top of the hour.
Everton might be in front if Cahill had been on the pitch this morning. They've certainly played well enough but no real sharp edge up top.
Oh - Rodwell is in one on one but Cech stands up well. Fellaini did well to win the ball there.
Rodwell with a hard shot that Cech stops easily.
OOH that was a chance for Everton as Rodwell should have scored when put through by Saha , but shot straight at Cech.
The big news this morning is all about the club on the other side of Stanley Park. Liverpool seem poised to capture Uruguayan World Cup hero Luis Suarez. But just when Reds fans were beginning to dream of a Suarez-Torres partnership, El Nino has posted a transfer request with Carlo Ancelotti sniffing about the Spanish striker.
Another Everton chance as PhilNev put in a good chance, But Bily 's header lacked pace and was easily saved by Cech.
Anelka seems in there but is pulled up for offside. Meanwhile Howard Webb gives the little Neviller a bollocking for a double foul.
Anelka just off sides as he hits the post. Webb gives Neville a warning but no card. Surprising.
Anelka was put through and saw his shot come off the inside of the post , but he was flagged offside.
I just noticed that Phil Nev was booked for the challenge.
I definitely like the cut of Jack Rodwell's jib. Wouldn't mind a bit of that at Elland Road.
I thought the Suarez deal was off. He would be a great signing for Liversox. They are finally going to sign a quality player.
Anelka's through again and onside this time. Timmy does well.
Timmy with a solid save on Anelka. Chelsea putting up some pressure.
Timmy makes a great save from Anelka who was through
The Guardian reckons that they're finalizing the deal with Suarez today. Dunno....
I am surprised about Torres. I know he wanted out when Woy was in charge, but though he was happy with Kenny in charge and would want Suarez as a striking partner. I hear Kenny is trying to transfer Konchesky.
I've just noticed that Saha has taken the time to color-coordinate his boots with his hair. Nice one, Luis. Did I ever mention that orange is my favorite color?
Frank De Boer gave Liversox Saturday as the deadline to agree terms with Suarez.
Very poor pass by Baines spoils a good run.
Well, I've noticed that Rafa, Woy and now Kenny have tended to play Torres up front alone, which might suggest that that's El Nino's preference. I don't know - he seems more of a threat when playing alongside someone like Villa with Spain.
That was a superb run by Baines then he cheaply conceded possession.
Still no goals in the three Cup matches that have kicked off this morning.
I just noticed that as Villa take on Blackburn in another cup tie and the Swans take on Leyton Orient.
I agree with the color guy (Gary Birtles?) for once. Everton are playing too high up the pitch with speed merchants like Anelka and Malouda facing them. They've been warned.
Was that a penalty shout as Terry climbed on Saha's shoulders.
Not sure what Webb penalized Saha for there. Maybe he's upset with his orange boots.
Saha made an excellent run there but he needed some support out wide. Ran into trouble in the end.
Fellani shot from long range, but Essien blocked the shot. That was an ambitious effort.
Oh - Arteta with a daisy cutter just wide of the post.
Arteta at a distance fires wide. Should have pressed it forward a but more.
Arteta shot wide, but Cech would have made the save if the shot had been on target. That was a decent effort.
Villa have taken an early lead against Blackburn through Clark.
Half-time at Goodison. Goalless but entertaining nonetheless. Nicely poised for the second half.
The halftime time score at Goodison Park is 0-0 as Cieran Clark scored the first goal of the fourth round of the FA Cup minutes earlier.
Leeds are not in action this weekend. We were initially scheduled to play Watford who take on Brighton in the Cup.
Time to get the kid out of bed. Decent first half by the Toffess. Let's see if they can muster up a goal in the second.
Blackburn have tied it up at Villa park through a goal by Nikola Kalinic.
Leyton Orient have taken a surprise lead at Swansea as they won at Norwich in the third round.
Orient are off to an away lead through Smith. 0-1 in Swansea.
I will be up early tomorrow as the Gunners host Huddersfield at 6 AM CST tomorrow! Wolves host Stoke in another all Prem match tomorrow. Will anyone else be up early tomorrow?
Starting up the second half.
Anyone know where there's a link to the Asian Cup, or a score update?
Egypt update - after three days of rebellion in the streets of Cairo, anti-Mubarek protests have spread to the provinces today with thousands out in the streets of Alexandria.
Right, back to the footer.
The second half is underway at Goodison. I feel much better now that I have had a nice strong cup coffee. I will need more of the same tomorrow.
No changes as the second half starts up.
Arsenal old-boy Bobby Pires has put Villa back in the lead. 2-1 at Villa Park now.
I have been following that Bob. Mubarek needs to resign ASAP as this situation is really out of hand. That is an understatement!
Pires finally contributing at Villa Park. Will you be up early to watch the Gunners tomorrow?
Agreed. And Obama needs to make a statement clearly in support of the people in the streets. I find it particularly ironic that a country born of revolution constantly calls for "calm and restraint" when someone else tries to throw off the shackles.
I will indeed be up bright and early to join you lot tomorrow morning. Looking forward to it.
The Swans have tied it up seconds before halftime through a goal by Cedric Van Der Gun. It is Swansea 1 Leyton Orient 1
Van der Gun - great name there.
Morning fellas
I had a lie in this morning. I watched the end of the half in bed
COME ON YOU TOFFESS!
Oh - Rodwell did so well to post up and Saha was nearly on to it with an acrobatic effort at the backpost.
ooh, Rodwell with a great cross and Saha has a chance blocked at the back post
Great Bob! I wonder if Steve will be joining us as he must be celebrating the Carling Cup Final spot.
Morning, sleepyhead! We've got the full complement now. Welcome!
Anyone found a SS link?
Good morning UWS! Great defending by Ramires at the post. Rodwell heads wide from the corner.
Good chance of it as I don't think there's televised coverage. And there's no way that Eric will be competing for the computer use at that hour. The boy barely ever gets out of bed before noon unless he's forced to.
Not yet, mate. I'll keep looking.
I did not . I am watching on FSC.
Did you see that Michael Bradley has gone to Villa on loan?
The early match is on FSC tomorrow!
Oh - Fellaini's header from Arteta's free kick produces a nice tip over by Cech.
Got one
http://www.justin.tv/coloves2#/w/809516432
Nice set piece from Arteta, Cech saves Fellaini's header.
Cech does well to tip over the header from Felanni off the free kick. He easily catches the corner.
Wow - then unlikely that we'll hear from the Gooner at least until the interval. He'll be glued to it upstairs. Maybe I can encourage him to steal the boy's laptop?
I won't be around tomorrow
I am taking the boys to NYC to see St. Johns v Duke at MGS. Matt is a big Duke fan
A buddy of mine got free tickets!
Nice one, mate. Enjoy it!
Enjoy UWS! I hope you and your sons have a great time.
Villa are 3-1 up now as they head to half-time. Delfouneso with the third.
Thanks for the link, UWS. I'll be checking that out later.
That was a fine effort by Arteta that goes high. Everton showing tome attack.
Arteta shoots well wide from long range . That was a poor effort hit with the outside of the boot. A decent second half start from the Toffees.
It is a strange schedule for FSC today too.
They have the early game and the United game late but they haven't advertised any 10 o'clocker but it looks like it is Brum vs Coventry
Villa 3-1 up at half
The 10 AM is indeed Brum vs Coventry. Not the most appealing match.
What are you thoughts about Torres... the Times football editor believes he will be wearing blue on Monday!!
I DON'T WANT HIM TO GO THERE!!
YES!!!!!
SAHA!!!
Great corner from Baines finds Saha's orangey goodness
1-0!
YES!!! Saha heads in off the corner from Baines as Everton take the lead against the holders. There was no marking.
Saha gave Everton the lead against Chelski in the 2009 FA Cup Final. I hope Everton hold on to the lead this time.
The first half, Chelsea looked like the dangerous lot they normally are.... this half, more like the Chelsea from the winter months!
Fantastic! The holders are in big trouble now. Chelski haven't really threatened the Everton goal as of yet. We'll see what they're made of.
Thirty minutes of hold on, or make it 2-0.
COYB!
Barnsley, in 2008, was the last team to beat Chelsea in a Cup tie.
The Toffees are still pressing to their credit.
I agree UWS. They had looked better in the EPL matches against Blackburn and Bolton too.
I remember that match,UWS. Pompey won the cup that year.
Is Andy Murray going to win a Grand Slam tourney tonight? First British winner in YONKS
Looking at the goal again, it was a routine set piece and Terry just lost his positioning. Easy header for Saha.
Horrible defending by Terry on the goal.
Arteta shoots a free kick into the wall.
Agreed. He's not the defender he was five years ago. Past his best.
No one commented on my Michael Bradley comment of 8:44
Baines is offside as Everton are dominating this match, looking for a second . Kalou replaces Malouda.
Kalou in for Malouda.
I'm liking that Everton is not sitting on this lead. You can't do that with Drogba and Anelka on the pitch.
WOW UWS! I had not heard about that. When did this happen? Now there are four Americans at Villa Park.
Have you guys watched the Match of Seventies Series that I sent you a while back?
Fantastic. I have watched most of them. Last night was the 75-76 season.
Bob, what happened to Leeds after their undeserved European Cup Final loss to Bayern? They didn't seem to factor in the league that season and beyond! Didn't they have the same group of players?
A bit of crossword help, please.
"Toyota SUV (seven letters)."
The four Americans are Freidel, Guzan, Lichaj , and Bradley.
I think that group of players was getting near retirement age and the younger players were not nearly the same quality.
ooh, Coleman go close twice!!!
SS is a few seconds behind
Sorry, UWS. I didn't notice your comment at first. That's a good move for Bradley. He could definitely get into a struggling Villa side and make an impression.
Toyota SUV = cruiser.
Arteta showing some pace today. Coleman fires and the ball's deflected.
Everton corner. Not much.
Sequoia
Kalou ties on the counter attack. Poor defending by Distin.
BLOODY HELL!
Kalou scores on the break
)(*^&(*&&*)*)(**(^*(
Cech saves superbly from a Coleman header than Essien blocks the rebound from Coleman fro a corner. They do not score from the corner, but Chelski break and Kalou scores with a nice finish against the run of play. Now 1-1.
GOAL! Kalou has leveled it for Chelski! His ninth of the season. Definitely against the run of play. Nice counter and Kalou finished through Distin's legs.
If Chelsea don't lose today, I fear they going to win the damn thing again!!
Classic stuff with Stevenage on SS
It took exactly twelve seconds for Chelski to break from one box to the other as Anelka deserves credit for his part in the goal.
I got your answer Bob... did it fit?
I hope not. I think United or the Gunners could defeat this lot.
Time for some fresh legs up front Moyes.
Again, Chelsea are starting to get back to their old ways... just in time for United coming to the Bridge... bugger
Cheers, mate!
I did catch those Matches of the 70s links that you sent. Great stuff, mate. As to Leeds, the Armfield side that went to the European Cup Final and were robbed in 75 was the last hurrah for a side that coalesced around Revie in the early 60s and probably peaked in 1970 when we were in three finals in a week and lost all of them. By 75, players like Jack Charlton had retired and had been replaced by Gordon McQueen and players like Bremner and Giles were on their last legs.
A replay would mean fixture congestion for Chelski.
Fellani wins a corner for Everton.
Fellaini seems to catch Drogs in the face. No bookings yet from Howard Webb. Very lenient today.
Was it Armfield that took over from Clough?
They did show the Euro Final in that show.... stonewall penalty when The Kaiser fouled in the box and then the disallowed goal.
Did they give up in the league that year?
Methinks it's JB time for Moyesie!
Drogba concedes another corner.
Did Fellaini's hair get in Drogba's eye? Get up.
BTW, what a classic punch up with Franny Lee and Norman Hunter going toe to toe... twice!
Yeah - Jimmy took over after the Cloughie debacle. Lasted for a few seasons. Got the sack when we were relegated and then there was the era of former players as managers. Three of them in a row.
Yes . Armfield took over . Derby County won the league in 1974-1975.
You don't get that kind of aggro action these days, do you? Fantastic stuff.
When did Leeds go down?
Bob, I thought Jimmy Adamson took over in 1978-1979, three seasons before being relegated. I thought Alan Clarke was in charge during the relegation season.
John Obi Mikel coming on for Lamps. Seems as if Carlo is playing for the draw now.
Leeds were relegated in the 81-82 season and came back up in 1990 under Wilko.
Nearly a Chelski lead as a long range effort from Ramires comes off the post.
Frank Lampard Sr. hasn't changed at all... just a little grayer!
I still remember his classic goal celebration in the 80 Cup semi final... he ran circles around the corner flag... of course, I copied him when I scored at Upper Heyford... you guys just ignored me!
Come on Moyes show some tactical skill and make a substitutionready already!
Finally. Beckford in for Rodwell.
Rameiers off the bar. Come on.
You may be right, there, MUR. My memory was that we went down for a season in 78, no? I'd have to double-check that one.
Jermaine Beckford is on for Rodwell.
Nice Old Trafford 3rd Round Beckford reference there from the color man. Cheers!
Leeds were relegated in 82. They were not relegated prior to that season and I think Clarke was in charge during that ill fated season as he was a hero as a player and a villain as a manager.
He knows how to score against Champions in the Cup!
Leeds were relegated in your last year in England?
I don't remember that!!
Ooh, Beckford gets a shot on target saved
Ivanovich coughs it up to Beckford. Cech makes the save. Everton corner.
Weak corner by Baines.
I've just double-checked the archives and of course MUR - our resident anorak - is correct. Amfield was sacked in 78 but replaced by Jock Stein for another 44 day stint. I'd completed repressed that memory. Then Adamson. Then Sniffer, Eddie Gray and Bremner in the early 80s dog days.
Three minutes of stoppage time remain in this entertaining cup tie.
Speaking of coughs... someone has an annoying one on the SS panel!
Villa are down to ten at the 62 minute
Are you serious that Stein lasted 44 days???
What is with Leeds and that number!!!
Essien heads a corner low and wide. Close match.
Yes - Nathan Baker has been ordered off. But it looks as if Villa are safe.
Did Leeds go down the year we graduated? I am stunned!
Yeah - he buggered off to manage Scotland after 44 days. Go figure!
I remember Jock Stein being in charge, but don't know why he left. I thought Clarke was in charge in 82. Then Eddie Gray and Bremner came along after relegation.Eddie Gray didn't do any better the second time around.
It's all over... at least Chelsea have extra match on the schedule
That's it - a 1-1 draw. Probably the best result for United fans. Adds one more match for the old Chelski legs.
The match ends 1-1 and there will be a replay at Stamford Bridge as Chelski face fixture congestion.
Replay to come. 1-1.
Disappointed Everton could not get the win, but it was a solid over performance.
Off to face the day. Enjoy the rest of the matches.
Next up on FSC - the Midlands derby between Brum and Coventry.
Nice chatting with you, Someone. Cheers!
Take care SS
The SS panel is showering praise on Clint Dempsey now. Nice!
There are two games in the Championship today. Both are important
Norwich visit Palace at Selhurst Park
QPR travel to Hull
Two home wins would do for Our Bob
I remember watching a League Cup at Portman Road that Leeds lost 3-0 on a trip with the Host Nation Club during that relegation season.Bob and Dave, you were Seniors that year. The following season I watched Leeds draw 0-0 at Cambridge in a match on ITV.
More crossword action:
"Group with 2000 hit 'It's Gonna Be Me' (five letters)."
I know that Bob will be cheering for Palace and Hull City.
That will do nicely, indeed, MUR.
I can't stand how these teams are treating the FA Cup!! Birmingham make 10 changes from the midweek game
Why aren't the teams and the FANS taking this great competition more seriously???
Do these teams want to finish 14th in the league more than winning silverware?
The fans aren't showing up either..... IT'S THE CUP DAMN IT!!!!
Of course, the FA are doing the same thing! The FA Cup Final is eight days BEFORE the last week of games!!!
Nsync
I agree , UWS. I am upset that Ian Holloway is fined for fielding a weakened team against Villa, but McLeish can do the same because it is the FA Cup. The FA Cup needs to be treated more seriously. Sadly, it is all about money.
Off to shower and shave
Be back in a tic
