An Early Yorkshire Derby and Other Matters
It's been a rocky start for my beloved LUFC, with only two points from four matches, so the last thing we need today is an early away day at Not a Big Club. Here it is, though. At the same time, Stoke visit the Potteries. Later on we've got the usual 10am EST kickoffs, including away matches for both Liverpool and Chelsea. And at the end of the day - Leicester v. Arsenal. Settle in for a great day here on the LOB.
343 Comments:
Tragically, the Not a Big Club - Leeds clash is not BEin televised, so I'll be forced to follow it via live text on the LUFC website.
Good morning, Bob. Not a Big Club were upset by Richard Burton in midweek, who recorded the first win in the Championship. There's hope.
They're off from the Potteries.
The teams kicking off now at Hillsborough:
Not a Big Club: Westwood, Pudil, Lees, Hutchinson, Lee, Abdi, Hunt, Wallace, Bannan, Forestieri, Fletcher. Subs: Wildsmith, Jones, Palmer, Joao, Sasso, Buckley, Hooper.
Leeds: Green, Ayling, Cooper, Bartley, Taylor, Bridcutt, Vieira, Mowatt, Sacko, Antonsson, Wood. Subs: Silvestri, Coyle, Bamba, Phillips, Hernandez, Roofe, Doukara.
Referee: Simon Hooper
Morning, MUR - how are you mate?
And the teams now on display at the Brittannia:
Stoke City (4-2-3-1) Given; Bardsley, Shawcross, Wollscheid, Pieters; Imbula, Whelan; Bojan, Allen, Arnautovic; Diouf.
Substitutes: Haugaard, Muniesa, Adam, Walters, Cameron, Crouch, Ramadan.
Manchester City (4-1-2-3) Caballero; Zabaleta, Stones, Otamendi, Kolarov; Fernandinho; De Bruyne, Silva; Navas, Aguero, Sterling.
Substitutes: Hart, Fernando, Maffeo, Nolito, Delph, Clichy, Iheanacho.
I'm really exhausted after my first week back. How about you?
And Citeh have an early set piece on this breezy afternoon.
A free kick from De Bruyne is punched away
Doing okay, mate. We got through our prep week unscathed and can relax for a couple of days now. Back on Monday for the first day of classes with our game faces on.
I'm pleased that United won yesterday. It was a professional if not classic performance and much better to watch than the LVG sides.
Big news out of the Premiership this morning is that Christian Benteke has been sold to Palace. So, apparently Klopp thinks that four goals away to the Gunners shows that the Belgian is surplus.
Aguero got free down the right and put ion a cross , but nobody was there to connect
That was a stonking header for Zlatan from a classic Roon cross. Pretty on the eye. And now Zlatan has four goals in three matches, three of them in the Premier League. Quite a start - reminds me of Ruud van Horsey Face.
I could use a hat-trick for my boy Sergio Aguero today. He got one against Steau in midweek in CL qualifying, so who knows?
I saw that one coming. He was the only player in the pre season squad that didn't play, so I knew that his days were numbered at Anfield. I wonder where Joe Hart is headed . I don't expect him to be a Citeh player at the end of the transfer window.
United is top of the pops and Zlatan is GBB. Roon is playing better, so we are off to a great start
He did . Citeh were rampant in Bucharest and Aguero missed two penalties as well.
Yes - apparently Hart has been told by Pep that he can leave. Surely there will be some offers?
Just over by Sterling from the D after Aguero had a shot blocked then De Bruyne laid off a pass for him to shoot.
I think it's his attitude. I think he did something to rub Pep the wrong way and he doesn't fit into his system. It is rumored that pep will sign Claudio Bravo before the window closes.
Not quite sure why Raheem Sterling is being booed at every touch - what's he ever done to the Potters. Great crowd noise at the Britannia, though.
Diouf forces a corner off Otamendi.
Diouf wins a corner off of Otamendi on a Stoke counter.
Cioteh counter off the corner from Wee Joe then Wee Joe sets up a Stoke counter.
Dangerous cross there but Aguero didn't quite get there and Allen bundled Sterling over before he got there.
Old Man Given starting against his former club
Good counter there and both Igbola and Allen had snatches at it.
A cross from Arnautovic is cleared then Imbula has a shot blocked then Wee Joe has a shot go just over.
Leeds has a Derby match at Hillsborough then a trip to Bedfordshire in midweek. Let's hope they don't fall asleep like Villa did.
Still 0-0 at Hillsborough. I'd be happy with a draw, to be honest.
Bardsley clears a slide rule pass from Silva for a corner.
True - we could use a decent cup run to settle the nerves at the club.
Wolscheid heads away the corner.
Were you surprised that Richard Burton had a surprise win against Not a Big Club in midweek? Their first ever win in the Championship.
Great block by Otamendi from Wee Joe for a corner after rounding Willy. The corner from Wee Joe is headed away then Shawcross is offside. The corner resulted from a great run and pass from Bojan
Actually a free kick to Stoke. Into the wall by Peroxide Arnautovic.
Nice idea there from Sterling, nutmegging toward Silva making the run there. Citeh are looking smooth going forward.
Based on the early stats, Not a Big Club is dominating, out shooting Leeds 7 to 2. Rob Green has made two saves and Kieran Westwood has yet to be tested. Not a Big Club with 63% possession.
I wasn't - I don't really rate Not a Big Club - they'll be mid-table at best, IMHO.
A breezy day in the Potteries.
Sounds ominous - come on, you Whites!
Pieters clears a pass by Sterling for a Citeh corner.
Sterling receives the ball in a great position but can't pick out Aguero.
The corner from De Bruyne is cleared for another.
Oh my - Citeh have got a penalty for a tug on the shirt from Shawcross!
The next corner is taken and
PENALTY TO CITEH . SHAWCROSS IS CALLED FOR HOLDING OTAMENDI OFF THE CORNER.
It'll be my boy Aguero with the penalty - let's hope he's cleared the cobwebs from midweek out....
Aguero converts!!!!!
0-1 Citeh!
GOAL !!!!!AGUERO SENDS OLD MAN GIVEN THE WRONG WAY AND SCORES WITH A GREAT PENALTY
A clear shirt tug there by Shawcross, but I'm not sure that it would have been called last season. Clearly a part of the new refereeing directives.
Aguero was in again and only Given blocked a second goal. Citeh a bit rampant now.
Unlike midweek, Aguero scored from the spot. I'm sure the pre match from Sparky did not include mention of gifting Citeh a goal.
I like the rule change . I think it will deter the shirt pulling and grabbing in the box.
Zlatan and Aguero might be having a goal battle all season based on their record so far.
Actually, although he did miss the two in midweek, he scored a pen in last weekend's match against Sunderland.
Celtic three up St. Johnstone just before halftime. They won 5-2 against Israeli opposition in the Cl in midweek.
Navas slid in there but Mike Dean doesn't go to the pocket.
Still 0-0 at Hillsborough. The possession stats are a little more even < Leeds have had several shots of target ,and A few fouls from the bad guys.
Pieters upends Navas to prevent a run down the right .
I'm happy with that - I'll take the goalless draw today.
GOAL! Aguero again!!!!!!
He's level with Zlatan now.
GOAL!!!! AGUERO HEADS ION THE FREE KICK FROM DE BRUYNE AND CITEH ARE TWO UP.
Lovely ball in from the Ginger Winger and Aguero just flicked it toward goal.
0-2!
Stoke felt De Bruyne from the free kick.
This is not the Tony Pulis Stoke at all. Sparky's Stoke look a reasonably easy touch here at home.
Great save by Willy from a volley by Bardsley then Diouf was calling for a penalty. Nothing doing.
Oh - how did Stoke not score there. Bardsley with a meaty volley at the back post and then Imbula screwed wide. But Allen was also upended - no penalty call.
Stoke beat some big clubs last season. Citeh are just. rampant today. it will eba really significant Manc Derby once the international break resumes.
Agreed. The ref needs to be consistent with the penalty decisions./
On the replay evidence, Stoke should have had a pen there. Unlucky.
Barry Bloody Bannan receives the first booking of the match .
Couldn't happen to a nicer bloke.
Bojan picks up the second yellow now for dissent.
Bojan is called for a foul and booked for his reaction. Sparky is not pleased.
Two minutes of stoppage time now coming.
Two minutes of stoppage time./
Arnautovic is offside off a long Stoke clearance.
Half time comes and I'm off to toast up a bagel for my brekkies.
Citeh are two up at the end of an impressive first half performance.
It's 0-0 at the half at Hillsborough. You should be pleased.
The second half is underway from the Brit.
I'm back from the break with my bagel. Kate and I have just had a bit of the Leeds United Calypso in the kitchen.
Mike Dean is certainly in the mood to give penalties today and he's penalized Sterling.
Bojan to take for Stoke....
And he scores! 1-2!
This match is turning into one of those AYA matches on the windy flight line with the wind assisting one team in either half.
I'm back from taking Melanie to marching band practice and see that Stoke have pulled a goal back. A penalty like the one in the first half, but Sterling pulled down Shawcross off a corner and Bojan scored from the spot.
Not a Big Club appear to still be dominating affairs. I hope Rob Green and co. can hold out for about thirty five minutes or so.
Stoke win another corner and Wee Joe takes. It's off the first man, but take two and Willy punches away the corner at the near post for yet another corner.
Willy catches the next corner that gets caught in the wind.
Shawcross cuts out a pass from Navas for a corner.
Kolorov heads on the corner from De Bruyne, but it is easily cleared.
I'm not sure the Pep revolution has fully taken off. Citeh have only scored one goal from open play in the Prem. The others have been two penalties and a free kick./
Since those two early saves by Rob Green, neither keeper has had to make a save. It doesn't sound like a classic from Hillsborough. I guess it's going to plan from a Leeds point of view.
Ronny Viera has been booked for Leeds, so each team has a booking and Leeds is now up to a dozen fouls.
WAY HAY!!!!~ ANOTNOSSON GIVES LEEDS THE LEAD WITH A HEADER.
CONGRATS, MATE
De Bruyne is booked for a foul no Wolscheid.
The header come off a cross from Sakho and was Leeds's first shot on target this match. You must be delighted.
Stoke is performing much better this half. Sparky must have given both his players and the officials the hairdryer treatment.
A Spanish swap as Nolito is on for Navas.
I am delighted - I was distracted for a moment when the goal went in. That's absolutely brilliant!
Rob Green makes another save as Leeds hang on to the lead.
I'm sure a win at Hillsborough would be a great source of satisfaction.
Hang in there, lads! Only twenty minutes left to survive.
Wee Joe booked on his debut for a foul on Zaba. Surprise surprise!~
MOT,MATE!
Walters on for Imbula, presumably , to unsettle the Citeh defense.
From the statistics, it looks like we're absolutely stealing this one at the moment.
It's been all Stoke this half.
Shawcross tackles Aguero for a corner off a pass from De Bruyne.
What the Britannia is now the "Bet365 Stadium?"
It appears to be a match of few opportunities. Probably a typically fiercely contestly Yorkshire Derby
I'm afraid so. I don't like that. I prefer the Brit. That's a safe bet.
Otamendi fouls Diouf on the counter off a blocked Kolorov shot.
It appears that we're still leading, with just over 10 minutes left. Hang in there, you Whites!
Walters wanted a penalty there but it seems that Mike Dean has given his allotment for today.
Ihonacho seems about to come on for a late cameo.
Rob Green saves from Forestieri off a pass from Barry Bloody Bannan.
Stoke are going down with a whimper at the moment, though of course it’s not easy to have sustained pressure against a Guardiola team.
Liam Bridcutt is booked for Leeds, who have one substitution remainig. Carlos Carvahal has made all three
That's it for Sergio - he'll finish on a brace today, three in the league now.
Always a hard choice whether to freshen things up or go with what has got you to a slim lead in the 80th minute.
Ihenacho on for Aguero, who had a productive week, but won't get a hat-trick. He's tied with Zlatan for GBB.
Silva shoots high and wide from a narrow angle on the counter. A tad selfish.
GOAL! Nolito secures the three points with an easy tap in at the back post.
GOAL !!!NOLITO SCORES WITH AN EASY TAP IN TO SEAL A WIN FOR CITEH AS THEY GO 1-3 UP./
Fab Delph on for Ginger Winger now.
WAY HAY!!!! CHRIS WOOD PUTS LEEDS TWO UP TO SEAL A WIN AT HILLSBOROUGH. IT AS A SHOT FROM SIX YARDS OUT OFF A PASS FROM ROOFE ,WHO HAD JUST COME OFF THE BENCH
Wahay! Chris Wood has sealed it for us!!
0-2 up!
Marvelous - I didn't expect this kind of result this morning.
The Citeh goal started with a throw from Zaba in the Citeh half . Ihenacho won the ball off of Wee Joe, played a one two with Silva and laid it on a plate for Nolito to score his first Prem goal for Citeh
Wood and Antonsson are starting to look like a potent strike force - five goals between the two of them now.
Five minutes of stoppage time/
"Guardiola" now being sung to the tune of "Glad All Over," Palace's signature tune.
Agreed. The first win of the Garry Monk era against Not a Biog Club, of all teams. He will be popular with the Leeds fans for that
Naughty from the Citeh fans
John Stones booked for a foul on Diouf.
Stones ever so slightly tarnishes an excellent performance with a yellow card for a foul on Diouf.
What a day to get our first win of the season. I'm well pleased.
Willy does well to hold on to a long range effort from Bojan
GOAL! And Nolito has a brace now, after a goal in mid-week. Citeh are clicking into high gear. A battle of the two Manchesters at the top of the league.
GOAL !!!CITEH RUNNING RAMPANT AS STERLING LAYS IT ON A PLATE FOR NOLITO TO PUT CITEH 1-4 UP WITH AN EASY TAP IN.
The final whistle goes and Guardiola will be pleased with the 1-4 win and the song for him. Citeh fans are over the moon.
It's over and Citeh finish with a convincing 1-4 win at the Brit.
It's over at Hillsborough and Leeds win 0-2. I'm delighted for you./
Citeh now top , ahead of United on goals scored. The two Manc clubs in the two top spots. It's as expected this early in the season.
Celtic were three up at the half and hold on to win 2-4 at St. Johnstone.
It will be Burnley vs Liverpool on NBCSN and the Hornets vs Chelsea on CNBC.
Which match are you going to watch coming up? I'm torn between Burnley - Liverpool and Watford - Chelski.
They're off from Turf Moor and Vicarage Road.
The line-ups for that match at Turf Moor:
Burnley: Heaton; Lowton, Keane, Mee, Ward; Arfield, Marney, Defour, Boyd; Gray, Vokes.
Subs: Kightly, Robinson, Jutkiewicz, Gudmundsson, Tarkowski, Darikwa, O’Neill.
Liverpool: Mignolet; Clyne, Lovren, Klavan, Milner; Lallana, Henderson, Wijnaldum; Coutinho, Sturridge, Firmino.
Subs: Manninger, Grujic, Moreno, Can, Origi, Matip, Stewart.
Referee: Lee Mason
I have both matches on, but will need to leave in about twenty minutes. Melanie will be performing in a marching band concert followed by a barbecue. I hope to be abck for the late one./
GOAL! Well, what about that? Burnley have scored early doors!
GOAL !!!!SAM VOKES GIVES BURNLEY A SHOCK EARLY LEAD
It's our old LUFC friend Sam Vokes with the goal for the home side.
Now Gray is away but Lovren covered well.
Clyne gifted possession to Andre Gray deep in the Pool half. He then passed to Sam Vokes , who scored with a great finish from just outside the box.
After a great Euro, Vokes has made a great start to the season
Andre Gray is offside of a long ball from Burnley.
The Reading Railroad ride their way to a surprise lead over the Seagulls.
Crystal Palace start strongly at White Hart Lane, with Jason Puncheon testing Michel Vorm. Back in Burnley, Dejan Lovren denies Andre Gray with a terrific last-ditch tackle, as the hosts cause havoc in the Liverpool defence.
John Swift has given Reading a "swift" start against Brighton.
Sturridge wins a corner.Taken short then Lallana has a shot blocked.
BOOM BOOM,BASIL.
Cheers, mate!
Forest take the lead vs Wigan while the Seagulls tie it up at Jaap Stam's lads.
Nottingham Forest lead at home to Wigan through Britt Assombalonga, while Brighton have equalised in short order against Reading.
The Seagulls swiftly tied it up?
The Baggies bag a lead vs the Toffees, who appear to have a soft center.
Old man, Gareth MacAuley with the goal for the Baggies.
Cambridge take the lead vs Carlisle United
Lallana has a pass cleared for a corner off a nice reverse p[ass from Coutinho
The corner is headed away by the first man.
Toby Alderweireld fires a bullet header straight at Wayne Hennessey as Spurs search for a breakthrough.
Matty Lowton heads away for another Pool corner. Taken short and Coutinho has a shot easily blocked.
Wigan tie it up at Forest
The Evil Lions take the lead vs the Evil Blades in an extremely evil match.
Troy Deeney booked for foul from behind on Cahill. A tad harsh, IMHO
Coventry take the lead at Bradford.
Cameron McGeehan has put Luton ahead in the A505 derby, against Stevenage.
The Blades are 1-0 down at the Den.
Milner feeds Lallana who turns but shoots weakly into Heaton's arms.
Luton take the lead at local rivals, Stevenage. The Hatters are in good form just in case you are wondering.
It seems like it - ominous there. But I hope we can rise to the occasion on Tuesday.
The Toon take the lead at Ashton Gate
We're off to the marching band concert. We should be back just in time for the late match. Cheers, mate
Nice ovation now for a lost Burnley supporter.
Cheerio, mate!
GOAL! A classic counter by Burnley and they're 2-0 up through Andre Gray!
While Klopp has just sold Benteke, I don't see Firmino as Liverpool quality. He's going to have to dip into the transfer market for a decent center forward.
Into stoppage time in this first half. Klopp will be anxious to get his side into the dressing room at the interval and to sort them out. This is substandard.
Meanwhile, Watford and Chelski wrap up a goalless first half. Glad I didn't watch that one.
We're back on at Turf Moor now. Sturridge has an early chance and fluffs it. Well wide. Not a good sign for England's World Cup campaign.
The temperature remains lukewarm at Vicarage Road, where Chelsea can’t find any forward momentum. And on the touchline, where Mazzarri and Conte have yet to resume their Serie A beef.
Another wild attempt by Sturridge there. Sad.
More goals in the Championship: Preston lead 2-0 at QPR, while Joe Mason has levelled things up for Wolves with an absolute peach.
Wahay! Etienne Capoue has given Watford the lead over Chelski!
I'm turning over now.
Ben Foster makes a great save from Funes Mori, but from the corner, Gareth Barry heads in at the far post. That’s his first Premier League goal since January 2014.
Everton now 1-2 up at the Hawthorns.
There’s a chronic lack of wind in Liverpool’s sails, and they’re struggling to hold onto the ball like they did in the first half.
As I'm turning over, Origi is replacing Sturridge, who has been terrible today.
A shocking dive from Diego Costa and he should have picked up a second yellow there. He was already booked in the first half for dissent. Sounds like a replay from Monday night.
Now there is a big shout for a handball from Chelski. Nothing doing.
Hazard is bundled to the ground now and Chelski have a decent free kick chance.
