It All Starts Here!
Good afternoon from The Cottage, chaps! The long, long Championship season begins this afternoon with newly-relegated Newcastle starting their Championship campaign - The Rafalution, as they're calling it in Toon Town, after having been able to hang on to the services of Rafa Benitez for the new season - away to Fulham at Craven Cottage. It should be an absorbing opening fixture to the season. Join me for a cuppa and a natter this afternoon, won't you?

The team news out of the Cottage this afternoon:
Fulham: Button; Odoi, Kalas, Madl, Malone; Cairney, Tunnicliffe, McDonald, Ayite; Aulko, Smith
Subs: Joronen, Stearman, Ream, Christensen, Edun, Woodrow, Parker
Newcastle United: Sels; Janmaat, Hanley, Lascelles, Dummett; Anita, Hayden, Colback, Ritchie; Perez, Gayle
Subs: Darlow, Sterry, Gamez, Mbemba, Shelvey, Aarons, Armstrong
Referee: Simon Hooper
And we're away - I'm not quite used to the new regs regarding kick-off. You don't need to knock it forward or to have even two players to kickoff any more. Not sure it all matters.
Fulham in their home white and black and Newcastle in all black. A bit of a clash, really.
It'll be interesting to see former Brentford keeper Button debuting for Fulham today.
Good afternoon, mate.I'm interested to see how the Toon , who will probably be my pick to finish top of the Championship fare at Fulham, who will probably struggle given that Moussa Dmebele has gone to Celtic and Ross to Villa. That's 40 goals the Cottagers lost.
Newcastle have spent nearly £45m on new players this summer. To put that in context, only one other Championship club, Aston Villa, have spent more than £11m so far. They must be one of the favorites for promotion.
Welcome to the new season, mate. I'm looking forward to having many great chats with you this year.
I agree with you - the Toon must be one of the favorites.
This is a decent Toon lineup. The signings of Dwight Gayle and Matt Ritchie are a statement of intent . If this team isn't running away with the Championship then Raffa will be sent packing.,
Cheers, mate. Me too. It should be a fantastic season. That's lots of cash. Will that backfire if the Toon somehow fail to win promotion?
Agreed - they're clearly stronger than any other side. But it will be fascinating to see what they look like today. I expected Fulham to bounce back up immediately and here they are still in the Champ several seasons later.
Ayoze Perez is unceremoniously knocked over by the Fulham defender Odoi. Now a dangerous free kick chance.
What a really stupid foul by Odoi on Ayoze off a long ball. He was going nowhere.
That was a first yellow card of the season for Odoi there - could have been red.
Ayoze blasts into the wall - a wasted opportunity.
Into the wall by Ayoze and Odoi gets the honor of being the first player booked in the Football League this season.
The first full round of fixtures will be tomorrow as every division , but the Prem will have fixtures tomorrow. Forest vs Burton Albion is BEIN shown tomorrow.
Fulham earn their first corner of the season.
The Cottagers win their first corner of the season.
It's headed away and the Toon clear
It'll be a quick start to the season, with a full slate of 1st Round League Cup fixtures in mid-week, including Leeds matching up with Fleetwood Town.
I saw that . I think that match is BEIN show on tape delay shortly after the match ends.
Tomorrow I plan to watch Forest vs Richard Burton at 10 then Barca vs Liverpool on ESPN at 1215. Will you be around for any of those tomorrow?
Lots of possession for the Toon, but neither team has yet to create a chance of note.
Bob's boy is suspended for the fist four matches of the season. Surprise surprise!
I should be around for the Championship fixture. Not sure I'll have the time to catch Liverpool v. Barca. Lots of errands to run tomorrow.
I'd send Mitrovic packing if I were Rafa. He doesn't need the aggro, especially with all of their attacking options.
I understand. I will be around tomorrow and for what looks a busy Sunday. I may miss the noon kickoff, but will be around for the Charity Shield and Not a Big Club vs Villa.
Agreed about Mitrovic. He may do that before the international break.
Sunday looks like a cracker. Can't wait to watch the beginning of the Gary Monk Revolution!
Yes. It sounds like an exciting time to be a Leeds fan.
Was that JFH and Sir Les in the stands? A short journey from Loftus Road.
Matt Ritchie wins a corner off of Tunnicliffe, who appeared to handle in the box. They allow that at your place?
A terrible corner from Ayoze is easily cleared.
The Toon should have had a penalty , IMHO.
Oh - that was a clear handball by Tunnicliffe. What was the ref thinking?
Matt Ritchie fouls Tunnicliffe. Did that have anything to do with the non call minutes earlier? The free kick from Tom Hardy is a waste as the offside flag is raised.
The Spuds thrashed Inter 6-1 earlier today in Oslo. The Gunners are currently away to Viking, which I think is also in Norway
Benitez will be livid about that non-penalty call. It likely means that the sides will go in level at half-time.
The first chance of the match falls to the Cottagers as Matt Sels fumbles a shot from Aluko and Matt smith commits a foul on the rebound.
Oh - great shot by Aulko but it was beaten away by Sels and Dummet beat big Matt Smith to the rebound.
Isaac Hayden is down off a collision with Aluko, holding his shoulder.
Agreed, but surely Raffa knows what to expect when he comes to your house.
Grant Hanley fails to prevent a corner off a deflected pass from Aluko
GOAL! Former LUFC star Matt Smith rises to nod home for the Cottagers!
1-0!
GOAL !!!! BOB WILL BE DELIGHTED AS MATT SMITH HEADS IN OFF THE CORNER FROM TOM HARDY. THE FIRST GOAL OF THE SEASON
You and Kate are not providing hospitality to Raffa and his lads. I don't blame you two.
To be fair, the Toon defenders invited Smith to have a free header there. Easy peasy.
Two minutes of stoppage time as the Cottagers break
Agreed. Lascelles , who played against Prem defenders last season, really should have done better
The Cottagers are deservedly and surprisingly one up at the half.
Half-time - Fulham go in 1-0 up after a lot of Newcastle pressure in the first half. The Toon will feel hard done by though, as they should have had a pen.
We're away at the Cottage in the second half. Newcastle have it all to do.
The second half is underway from The Cottage
Just to let you know that it's been bloody hot this week.
Grant Hanley momentarily loses the ball under himself in the Newcastle box trying to clear a cross, but Aluko isn’t close enough to pounce on the mistake.
Ayoze wins a corner that is taken short by Matt Ritchie and Ayoze sends in a cross that is blocked.
Very hot for us too, up here. 85F+ all week.
OH!!!! Right on the Button as Matt Ritchie has a close range effort blocked by David Button after the best move of the match from the Toon. The closest they have come to scoring.
That is hot by WNY standards. It's been around 100 all week here and very humid. Great be indoors with the AC running.
Steve and Eric were happy to escape that kind of heat in DC when they came up here. We had several evenings that were down in the mid-60s.
Matt Ritchie really should have tied it up for the Toon. Lionel Ritchie may have done better
Oh - big Matt Smith nearly in for his brace there. He might be a decent shout for top scorer in this division. We were mad to sell him.
A poor cross from Janmaat then Aluko could not get on the end off a great ball from Matt Smith straight up the opposite end of the pitch
I'm envious. I would love to have some of those evenings. Probably not till mid October. I'm sure it was a great visit.
Agreed. Matt Smith should still be at ER> I think he left during the chaos of the ownership changes and money being priority over quality players.
Ayoze doesn't look sharp enough yet. Matt Ritchie laid on a nice cross for him and his header was never close.
Ayoze is well wide with a glancing header off a great cross from Matt Ritchie.
Raimondo Aarons comes on for Jack Colback - Rafa's first change at the hour mark.
Aarons is on for Colback. The first substitution of the Football League season.
Oh - Ritchie now goes for goal but Button was right behind it.
Matt Ritchie has a long range effort right on the Button, but not in the back of the net.
Kallas fouls Ayoze.
A poor curling free kick from Ayoze is straight to Button.
Aarons should have done better there - Rafa must be tearing his hair out now.
Dwight Gayle with a clever turn and is fouled just outside the box by Odsoi.
Ritchie takes the free kick this time. It's better, but headed away
Goalscorer Matt Smith is off now; Tunnicliffe too.
Scotty Parker on for Fulham.
A double substitution for the Cottagers. Christansen on for Matt Smith and a return to the Cottage for Scott Parker as he's on for Tunnicliffe, who should have been called for hand ball in the first half.
Oh - Malone had a chance there but shanked his shot wide the mark.
And Adam Armstrong on for Perez, who was poor today. Armstrong is a youth product for Newcastle.
Ayoze, who has had a poor match, is replaced by Academy Boy , Adam Armstrong
Just under 24,000 at the Cottage. That's similar to their attendance figures when they were in the Prem. Many of those are probably travelling Toon supporters.
Fulham have weathered the Newcastle storm and are now looking at an impressive opening win.
A poor foul by Paul, Dummett on Odoi and deservedly booked for that
Poor free kick from the restart. Didn't beat the first man.
The free kick is headed away then Ayite shoots straight to Matt Sels.
I've seen better crossing from vicars.
Armstrong seems to have a build like Eden Hazard.
The final roll of the dice from Raffa as Shelvey is on for Hayden. I wonder why he wasn't in the starting lineup.
Jonjo Shelvy on for Rafa - his last roll of the dice. I'm surprised that he didn't start the match.
He does show some resemblance , but will he be a Hazard to Championship defenses?
Raffa may be busier in the post match press conference than during the match. Lots of questions to answer.
Armstrong with a rubbish effort on goal - more swearing from Rafa.
I can't see that Rafa is to blame here; his players just haven't performed.
A pass from Dummett is cleared then Armstrong looks nothing like Hazard with that horribly scuffed shot.
Interesting neck control there from Odoi.
That is true. I guess the main question is why Shelvey didn't start.
Agreed - not a stellar debut for Armstrong, who might be all at sea at this level.
Nine minutes for the Toon to get this one back.
Two lines of four for Fulham now - parking the bus.
Shelvy has already added some flair and ideas to the Toon forward line.
I expect that from Fulham the remainder of the match. I think Armstrong did play a few times last season. He should do better.
That clearance was definitely not on the Button.
The final substitution of the match as U.S. international, Tim Ream, is on for Scott Malone.
Matt Ritchie appeals for a handball. Nothing doing from referee Hooper. Rafa is livid.
matt Ritchie has a shot blocked off an excellent build up and screams for a penalty for hand ball. Nothing doing.
Not sure that was a pen - seemed unintentional.
Based on the replay, that would have been a harsh decision to have awarded a penalty
Four minutes of stoppage time.
Shelvey with a foul on Christansen that will waste time. He of all players should know better
Deep into stoppage time now - Janmaat is not pleased by the referee and picks up a yellow.
Janmaat has talked himself into the book despite winning a free kick
Shelvy will swing this one in - great last chance.
poor from Shelvy - straight into Armstrong at the near post.
Last chance for the Toon. A line drive free kick from Shelvey cannons off of Armstrong and out of play and that should be that.
Full-time - So the Rafalution begins with an away loss and Rafa is starting to understand that the Championship will be a tough nut to crack.
Great opening win for the Cottagers.
It's over and the Cottagers begin their season with an unlikely 1-0 win over the Toon, the favorites to win promotion to the Prem.
I'm off to do some cooking, mate. Cheerio until tomorrow.
Agreed. Raffa will rue the refereeing decisions, but the Cottagers were worth their win, IMHO.
Cheers mate.It was great chatting. I look forward to chatting with you tomorrow.
