The First Super Sunday!
Morning, chaps! It's our first very special Sunday morning in the Premiership this morning. We start on the South Coast with United's opening visit to Bournemouth. How will the new look Mourinho United turn out? Will Bournemouth suffer a sophomore slump? Then it's the big one - Arsenal hosting Liverpool, two of the the perennial heavyweights. The outcome of this one will tell us a lot about their fortunes for the new season. Join me for all the fun here on the LOB!
355 Comments:
When these two sides last met, they ended the 2015/16 Premier League season with a whimper. United won a hastily rearranged, poorly attended fixture, sealing their Europa League status but harming Louis van Gaal’s Cup final preparations. It was less than three months ago.
The teams lining up in the tunnel now at the Vitality:
Bournemouth: Boruc; Francis, Adam Smith, Steve Cook,
Daniels; Surman, Arter, Lewis Cook; Ibe, Wilson, King.
Subs: Federici, Gosling, Ake, Afobe, Gradel, Brad Smith, Grabban.
Manchester United: De Gea; Valencia, Bailly, Blind, Shaw; Fellaini, Ander Herrera; Mata, Rooney, Martial; Ibrahimovic.
Subs: Romero, Rojo, Memphis, Carrick, Rashford, Mkhitaryan, Schneiderlin.
Referee: Andre Marriner
Morning Bob
The teams are coming out
Why oh why Fellaini?
Where's Miki
Come on Man U
Come on Man U
Come on Man U
Did you see video of Lineker starting motd in boxers?
Good morning, chaps. Great to be chatting with you.
First pass by Roon was awful
Morning MUR
Morning, boys - great to have you on board for this morning's festivities. Feeling confident?
Cross the damn ball Wayne
Rooney slow off the mark, as per usual. I read an interesting article in When Saturday Comes yesterday that suggested that Rooney continues to be included because United's Chinese interests need him as an iconic player to sell their products. Crazy!
I was
An early chance for the Cherries as Charlie Daniels was played down the left. His cross was misjudged by Luke Shaw and Callum Wilson blasted over from close range
Yikes!!
I expect a tough match. United have lost their last two matches here.
Why doesn't he just bugger off to China
United's backline look a wee bit nervous so far.
It doesn't surprise me . I read that Roon is included in the starting lineup because it's in his contract that he has to play so many matches and train with the first team. Is that true?
Valencia isn't a full back!!
Leeds get a mention
The Vitality is such a small ground that you can hear individual people clapping in the background.
I agree. He should dig a hole to China and follow that path.
I'd rather not talk about Leeds - we've had a wretched start to the season. We're second bottom today.
Put Roon in the midfield for Fellaini
Bring in Pogba for Herrera
Bring in Miki in Roons spot
Rash on the right
Improvement from last week
You were bottom
Agreed. There's a cozy, lower division, family atmosphere about it. They seem to bve enjoying themselves.
That sounds about right. Why aren't you the boss at United, UWS?
Not impressed so far
I agree. If UWS were in charge at OT then I would pick them to win the title.
Bailly looks really raw to me - I can't believe that they spent £44 million on him.
A rash challenge by United debutant, Bailly on former United trainee, Josh King
Valencia gets over a cross
Ibra almost gets on end of it
Headaches all round
A clash of heads between Zlatan and Simon Francis at he far post. It looks like Simon Francis got the worse of it.
I suppose that's true, mate - we were tanked 3-0 this week. We'll need something against Fulham midweek, otherwise we go into a big match against Not a Big Club next weekend with three losses on the trot and Gary Monk's job up for grabs.
A surprisingly decent cross by Valencia.
I think that match at Hillsborough is an early kickoff. It will be a tough one and is probably BEIN shown on the telly.
Cherries fans are mocking United and why not?
Sad that it is Valencia getting it over
United need an attacking wide man
Rash comes to mind
I hope Rash plays a part this season
It is deserved
United don't look dangerous at all
Not as much passing around the back tho
I agree with you about Rash and about the passing around. Jose is not into the Tiki Taka. Citeh will be the Manc club to be playing that way based on what Bob and I saw yesterday.
None too pleased at the moment
Yes - our local derbies are always police-enforced early kick-offs. It should be televised.
Andre Marriner is trying not to book players right now. I don't like this kind of game management from refs. If the foul is bad enough, it deserves a card. Full stop.
I agree, mate. Top flight players need to be accountable for their action just as players at pub level are
Both sides just giving the ball away too cheaply.
Jordan Ibe is a decent signing for the Cherries and a sign that they plan to be in the Prem for quite a while.
Martial cuts inside from the left and fizzes a curler well wide.
Shot at goal
Not that close by Martial
Well wide by kung fu panda . Quite an erratic karate chop.
Too much damn passing !!!!
The announcer says that Roon is quite a vital artery to United. I would say more like a hemorrhoid or wart.
First decent move ends with a tame shot by Roon that Boruc saves easily.
Finally a good move
Tame short by Roon
Better from United . Roon with a chance that was easily saved by Boruc, but at least it's a chance.
I agree, MUR - what to do with Rooney is Mourinho's biggest challenge. I'm not sure he has it in him to drop Roon.
Valencia wins a corner off of Charlie Daniels after tons of passes. Boruc easily catches the corner from Mata
LVG's last Prem match in charge of United was vs the Cherries as is Jose's first, but at different venues.
Simon Francis with a textbook karate chop.
I don't like how Jose came in and said Roon isn't a middie
He was playing well there
Cheers, mate. I wonder if he would even be allowed to drop Roon before his contract expires.
So much for Zlatan s scoring 4
Hardly touched the ball
Harry Arter is over with a long range effort.
Agreed. Has he even had four touches?
I like the look of Bailey
Roon has a shot blocked for a corner off as run and pass from Kung Fu Panda.
Boruc does well to catch the corner from Roon.
United should now be dangerous at set pieces...but they aren't
If I hadn't had a good night's sleep, I'd be struggling to stay awake through this one, lads. It hasn't been a classic.
Not the United of old
Sigh
Matt has fallen asleep on the couch
No point waking him up either
Useless by Herrera
I'm back from a trip to the bog to see that I missed absolutely nothing
Zlatan did much the same last weekend. One classic header won the match, though.
GOAL! One suicidal backpass and Mata nipped in to score United's opening goal of the season!
Yes!!
What a couple of errors
Total gift
One more goal and United are top
WAY HAY!!!! DOES A CHERRIES ERROR MATA? IT SURE DOES AS SIMON FRANCIS LOOKED MORE LIKE ANNE FRANCIS. FIRST, A POOR BACK PASS FROM FRANCIS , A SAVE BY BORUC AT THE FEET OF A MATA THEN ANOTHER GIFT FROM FRANCIS THAT MATA TUCKED IN FROM A FEW FEET OUT
Quite ironic as the first goal of the Jose error was scored by Mata, one of the first players that Jose sent packing at Chelsea.
I was surprised to see Mata on the team sheet today, after last week. Jose stuck him on in the second half and then yanked him off with only moments to go in the match. Maybe that goal will change Jose's mind about the man?
He was player of the year for Jose
It just soured
Has Rooney played a ball forward yet?
Two minutes of stoppage time/
Mata would be in my team before Roon
United have no interest in scoring again before half
United are one up at the half to start the Jose era thanks to a gift by Simon Francis and a goal by Mata , a player he sent packing at Chelsea.
Hi Guys . Hope you are all well . Sorry I haven't posted yet but I am reading all of it . Keep up the good work .
Good afternoon, Chelskilad. Great to hear from you.
Football, it’s a Funny Old Game: how many times could Louis van Gaal have done with a stroke of luck like that presented to Juan Mata, during one of his trademark teeth-grindingly dull draws? Poor old Louis. I wonder what he’s up to right now.
HIya, Chelskilad - great to hear from you.
The second half is underway from the Vitality Stadium
So we're away again at the Vitality.
We are back for the second half
I want to see an improvement from United
He's probably on gardening leave where he may have a green thumb.
I have a feeling that United will be grinding out results this season
Clumsy by Bailey on Josh King.
Bailly is a bit of a bull in a china shop right now. Marriner's had a lot of patience.
Oh - Rooney was in there of the second - well saved by Boruc.
Great pass by Z
Useless by Roon
Boruc does well to block a close range effort from Roon off a pass from Zlatan , who makes his first contribution of the match
UWS must be really fed up - he's buggered off, probably for a walkies with Shadow.
Rooney goes down in the area - Marriner not impressed by the performance.
Roon down
No pen
I'm here
A pathetic fall by Roon, trying to win a penalty
Why didn't Roon try and shoot
The match has at least opened up a bit.
Jordan Ibe has a shot blocked by Blind for a corner.Taken short. Mata tackles one of the cooks.
Roon should be at the Olympics because he would probably win a medal in one of the diving events.
I used to like Herrera
He stinks of late
I have observed over the years that Jose's teams are know for gamesmanship. I expect that from United and Roon does not need to be asked twice as witnessed a few minutes ago.
Roon stops all the attacking flow
Agreed. I wonder if he will last more than a season under Jose.
If asked that question in a press conference, Jose will say that all his teams play that way, but we know the truth of the Mata.
GOAL! Rooney chips in with United's second.
Two nil
Roon with a decent effort from a miss hit
United are top
WAY HAY!!!! UNITED GO TWO UP. VALENCIA PLAYED DOWN THE RIGHT . HIS CROSS WAS MET BY AN ERRANT KARATE CHOP THEN DIVERTED IN WITH A CLOSE RANGE HEADER BY ROON.
Quite a jammy goal there, with the ball ping ponging all over the place in Bournemouth's area before Rooney finally nodded home.
Decent header there
I think United have clinched a win since the Cherries have been toothless in attack today and don't look like scoring. I can't recall De Gea having to make a save today
Nice little turn and run by Kung Fu Panda before being chopped down by Sermon.
A Sunday Surman results in an illegal karate chop in the D
Zlatan is over the free kick of course....
Free kick chance
Zlatan?
Great save !!!!
Wow - great shot and great one fisted save by Boruc!
What a save by Boruc off a rocket of a free kick from Zlatan
What does Eddie Howe have up his sleeve now.
Yes!!!!
Ibra!!!'nmnmm
GOAL! United are cruising now, with Zlatan hammering home a third.
Great drive
Side netting
Great daisy cutter drive through a crowd into the bottom left corner.
0-3!
WOW!!!! ZLATAN OPENS HIS UNITED ACCOUNT WITH A CRACKING LONG RANGE EFFORT .VERY WELL PLACED OFF A NICE KARATE CHOP THAT STARTED WITH A UNITED THROW.
Let me go move United on top the table hanging on my door
United three up . Surely this one is done and dusted
ARE YOU WATCHING , KING LOUIS?
United need to get more
Didn't make the CL on goal difference
It matters
Two changes for Eddie Howe now - not sure what the point is. Wilson and Ibe off.
New season, same old UWS. You're 0-3 up, top of the league, playing well. But not good enough.
A double change for the Cherries .First , the Cherries hope that Lewis will be Grabban a goal as he's on for Callum Wilson and Afobe on for Jordan Ibe, who did not impress on his debut
No changing your pick MUR...like last year!!!
Bugger 1-3
GOAL! Bournemouth have one back. Adam Smith with a great finish.
GOAL !!!! HOW ECONOMICAL AS ADAM SMITH PULLS ONE BACK FOR THE CHERRIES WITH A CRACKING FINISH OFF A PASS FROM gRABBAN AS THE CHERRIES ARE gRABBAN A GOAL BACK
According to the bbc, zlatan hasn't touched the back inside the box
I don't think I will change my picks. It didn't really make much difference last year and let's see how United do against more difficult opposition than the Cherries.
Mata never touched
Get up mata
Interesting info, UWS. Despite the goal. I haven't seen him in the box other than the clash of heads early in the match
Miki finally about to come on with more than 30 secs to go
United better not blow this
Here comes Miki
Mik becomes the first Armenian to play in the Prem as he's on for Mata, who gets a pat on the back from Jose for a job well done.
I don't know this Armenian bloke at all - where does he play?
Mik for Mat?
He was signed from Dortmund. He replaces Mata, which is basically like for like.
Pogba still to come
Fellaini or Herrera ?
Miscontrol from Roon
So annoying
Again, I like Bailey
Cheers, MUR!
Schneiderlin sent to warm up by Jose. He wants to shut up shop.
Schneiderlin warming up
I want Rashford to be involved
I know you like Gary Bailey, but what about Bailly?
Cardiff and QPR just kicked off
Plonker
Glad to help, mate. BTW, Phil Jones was shown in the stands. I'm surprised he's still a United player. Garry Monk would do well to sign him before the window closes .
BOOM BOOM!
Ex Leeds man coming on
Where have you gone, Maxie Gradel - the Elland Road faithful turns it lonely eyes to you....woo woo woo!
Former , ER favorite Gradel, is on for Lewis Cook on the final roll of the dice for Eddie Howe.
One of the Cooks played for Leeds?
According to my niece's son
The other twin said that Ibra scored on every debut for every league except for Ajax
Bournemouth giving it their all right now. Another goal back might make the final five minutes lively.
He did as one former ER player replaced another. Two Cooks meant that too many cooks spoiled the broth.
Yeah - we just sold Lewis Cook this Bournemouth this summer.
They are full of facts
Roon's goal was 87th away goal tying Shearer for most
Great solo run by Zlatan ruined by a solo pass.A French defensive swap as Schneiderlin is on for Kung Fu Panda.
Birthday card for Herrera.
Herrera gets a birthday card
A yellow one
How ironic that we constantly complain about Roon and yet he is about to break a Prem record.
BOOM BOOM!
The fans are yelling " Sit Down Moruniho."
Blind is doing well
Today is my last day of summer vacation, so I won't be around tomorrow or for the Friday match.
He is playing much better than he did when LVG was in charge.
Matt asked when did United last score 3.
Stoke at home
Newcastle 3-3
The final roll of the dice for Jose as Memphis is on for Roon.
D3.14 on for Roon
What about Rash
He better not be frozen out
We defeated the Gunners 3-2 and the Danish team 5-1 in the EL.
Into stoppage time. Four minutes
It will be tougher for Rash to force his way into the first team since Zlatan has been signed.
Do I want Unitednto score again
United scored 4 at Swansea after winning the Charity Shield under Moyes
We all know how that ended
A cross from Charlie Daniels is headed by Josh King off of Hair for a corner. The corner from Gradel is headed away
Madhouse in the United box
United win!!! Top of the table!!!!
OH!!! De Gea does well to turn around a shot from Surman . That leads to a short corner. Did Gea get away with a foul? United finally clear and the final whistle blows. United start the Jose era with a 1-3 win at the Vitality Stadium
Just sent you guys a pic
Nice one, UWS - that hopefully was a really satisfying start to the Jose Mourinho Era for you. It was a slow start but your class showed through in the end. Top of the Pops!
Now we're off to the Emirates for the big one - Arsenal hosting Liverpool.
Man signed from Bolton playing in Bob's position
Gooner can't be pleased
The teams now gathering in the tunnel:
Arsenal: Cech; Bellerin, Holding, Chambers, Monreal; Elneny, Coquelin; Walcott, Ramsey, Iwobi; Sanchez.
Subs: Gibbs, Wilshere, Ospina, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Cazorla, Xhaka, Akpom.
Liverpool: Mignolet; Clyne, Lovren, Klavan, Moreno; Lallana, Henderson, Wijnaldum; Mane, Firmino, Coutinho.
Subs: Manninger, Grujic, Can, Origi, Matip, Stewart, Alexander-Arnold.
Referee: Michael Oliver (Northumberland)
I'm back from walkies with Sparky on a warm, sticky morning , ready for the late match
I think that's Holding, who should be playing in midfield with a name like that
The battle of the heavyweights is underway from the EM
Remember I will be driving to airport for tomorrow's match and in charlotte for all of next weekend
We are off in the capital
