Lakenheath Old Boys
We are all former students at Lakenheath High School and other public schools in East Anglia. We were in school in the 70s and 80s and drank deeply from the well of British culture of those decades - the pints, the telly, and of course the footie!

It's been seven long years since Sunderland and Middlesbrough last met in the Premier League, when they drew 1-1 in January 2009. The managers were Ricky Sbragia and Gareth Southgate, the goalscorers were Kenwyne Jones and Afonso Alves and players had names rather than hashtags and at signs.
David Moyes and Aitor Karanka shaking hands as this one is about to get going. The teams:
Sunderland (4-2-3-1) Mannone; Love, O’Shea, Djiliobodji, van Aanholt; Rodwell, McNair; Watmore, Januzaj, Gooch; Defoe.
Substitutes: Pickford, Khazri, Lens, Pienaar, Asoro, T Robson, J Robson.
Middlesbrough (4-2-3-1) Guzan; Nsue, Barragan, Gibson, Friend; Clayton, Forshaw; Stuani, Ramirez, Downing; Negredo.
Substitutes: Dimi, Ayala, Baptiste, De Sart, Adomah, Fischer, Nugent.
Martin Atkinson whistles the game to life at the SoL.
All the early running here by Sunderland, mostly through Jan and Gooch.
This has been an excellent start from Sunderland and Januzaj in particular. He receives a free-kick just inside the box on the left and skips daintily past Clayton and Forshaw before hitting a shot that is blocked by Barragan.
Great ball in from the boy Gooch to Jan. Just couldn't get on to it. But this young Sunderland frontline looks lively. And Gooch seems full of promise for the US team.
Good ball in from Jan to Defoe who turned sharply and won a corner.
GOAL! Against the run of play, Boro have scored!!!!
That one came from nothing, Stuani getting on to the ball and trying a pop that flew past Mannone.
That goal has completely changed the complexion of the match. Now it's all Boro, doing the running through Stu Downing,
Jan skips to the by-line but doesn't produce the right ball back.
Januzaj beats Clayton, who bundles him over and is booked.
Rodwell scrunches a long-range drive high over the bar.
For all Sunderland’s possession, Guzan has had little to do and Boro do look very well organised defensively.
Downing will swing a corner in now....
Overhit....
John O'Shea can't continue and Stephen Pienaar.
It's hard to believe that Boro are leading here - they haven't done anything beyond scoring, that is.
GOAL! Boro have done it again, against the run of play. And it's that man Stuani again, teed up by Negredo.
2-0!
Half time: Sunderland 0-2 Middlesbrough
Two glorious goals from Cristhian Stuani have put Middlesbrough in control of this Tees-Wear derby.
Teams back out at the SoL. One change to the sides. Sunderland have brought on Jermaine Lens to replace Paddy McNair.
Defoe went down in the box there under the challenge from Barragan. Nothing doing from Martin Atkinson.
As it stands, the Black Cats are bottom of the Prem, with a slightly worse GD than Bournemouth, who play next, and Palace.
Oh - great run from Gooch but his shot was blocked.
Now it's Pienaar with a pop - closer to the corner flag, really.
Oh - Guzan saves well from Van Arnolt.
This is better from Sunderland now. Lens was found at the backpost but he couldn't steer his shot in.
Oh - Defoe seemed poised to score there but for a great block by Gibson. Boro are on the rack.
Moyes will be discouraged again. Sunderland were fairly decent against City but got nothing out of it last weekend. And they're likely to come away with no points again today.
Negredo had a chance to seal the deal but his first touch was terrible.
GOAL! Patrick van Aanholt has pegged one back for Sunderland!
Boro just about hanging on to their lead now. Sunderland in full flow.
Guzan spilled another one!
Middlesbrough have restored a bit of order in the last few minutes after a torrid spell. They still can’t really keep the ball though.
Sunderland’s final substitution: Joel Asoro, a Swedish forward who was born in April 1999, replaces the superb Duncan Watmore.
More subs now - Nsue troops off to be replaced by Ayala.
Less than 10 minutes now for Sunderland to get back into this one.
After a long spell of Boro possession, Clayton slices a shot well wide from long-range.
Boro are frustrating Sunderland by keeping possession. There will be three added minutes, in the first of which David Nugent replaces Negredo.
One more chance now for Sunderland. Time ticking away....
Final whistle - Boro have the bragging rights today. At one point it seemed inevitable that Sunderland would get back into this one but Boro were one of the stingiest sides in the Championship for a reason. They've hung on and are now fifth. Wow!
Back after a shower for the late one.
I'm joining this one a few minutes late after a long, refreshing shower.
The team news for today's historic occasion:
West Ham: Adrian; Byram, Reid, Collins, Masuaku; Kouyate, Nordtveit, Noble; Tore, Valencia, Antonio.
Subs: Randolph, Obiang, Ogbonna, Fletcher, Calleri, Burke, Oxford.
Bournemouth: Boruc; Adam Smith, Francis, Steve Cook, Daniels; Fraser, Surman, Arter; Ibe, Callum Wilson, King.
Subs: Gosling, Ake, Afobe, Gradel, Brad Smith, Federici, Grabban.
Referee: Craig Pawson
My first impression of the new City of London Stadium (nee Olympic Stadium) is that it's not a proper football stadium. Gone, I suppose, are the lovely old traditional stadia with the fans pressed up against the pitch, such as they were at Upton Park. I notice here that they've had to cover up a large athletic track with a large swath of green fabric, which gives the impression that the pitch is narrower than it probably is.
Wilson, King and Ibe will test the nerves of West Ham’s defence today, and Wilson, played onside down the left, almost picks out Ibe with his low cross. A half-chance each, then, after 15 minutes.
Ibe, deployed down the right, steals a march on Masuaku and curls a shot on goal, but it’s straight at Adrian.
The crowd are making an impressive noise so far, when they’re not squinting in the sun.
Good morning, mate. I'm sorry for joining you so late. We had a really late night .How has everything been this morning?
Charlie Daniels fouls Tore inches outside the box.
Tore wins a free kick after being upended by Tore. No Payet today, so Tore will likely take this one himself.
Into the wall....
Into the wall by Tore then his return cross is headed away. The Hammers really miss Payet in these situations./
Morning, MUR - great to hear from you!
The Tees-Wear Derby was absorbing. Sunderland had most of the possession and looked likely to get a result. But Boro took their chances well. They're 5th in the league now!
This Olympic Stadium has a completely different look to Upton Park and even a contrast in atmosphere.
WOW! Thanks for the update. There are some early season surprises in the standings and probably very few PPP points to award.
Certainly the form of Hull and Boro is throwing a lot of us off. But that was true of Leicester and West Ham last season, too. Always surprises.
Now the Coyote is down after appearing to be fouled.
I agree with you. The Hammers fans are giving it a go, but the crowd noise is definitely diminished.
How was the birthday party?
Replays show that Tore should have won a penalty, and not a free kick – Daniels was standing on the 18-yard line when he brought him down.
Agreed. That's what makes the Premier League so fascinating.
That was at least obstruction by Collins on Wilson.
We had a great time at the birthday party. It was really entertaining
Free kick now out wide right. Can Tore do anything with this one?
Great to hear - we can always use a late, late night now and again.
Harry Arter has talked himself into the book after being called for hand ball the James Collins is called for a foul off a short free kick from Tore that was a training ground routine gone horribly wrong
Sir Trevor looking resplendent in the stands today.
Without the services of Payet and Carroll, West Ham look a really average mid-table side.
Agreed. It's great to have a break from the normal routine
Decent move for the Hammers but Antonio couldn't get a telling shot off.
Valencia lets a pass from Mark Noble run through then Tore leads a break and a scuffed shot from Antonio results in a corner.
According to the announcer, the Olympic Stadium has yet to register a goal or even a shot on target.
Our former LUFC captain is booked for tracking back with a tackle from behind.
Sam Byram booked for a foul on the break and there was another one in the build up where the ref played the advantage .The Announcer wonders if he could have received two yellows.Ouch!
Decent crack by Valencia from a wide angle. Boruc was equal to it.
Boruc makes a near post save from Valencia. The first save in the new Olypmic Stadium
Callum Wilson had a hat-trick in a seven goal thriller between these two last season at Upton Park, but it's the direct opposite today at the Olympic Stadium
Nordveit clears for a corner when there did not seem any need to .The corner eludes everyone.
Not great entertainment for the punters at the new stadium - only one shot on target so far.
Sam Byrum is tripped by Fraser
Collins heads in the free kick from Mark Noble then Antonio heads high and wide.
Bournemouth have offered very little going forward. Shame, as they've got some decent attackers.
Agreed. I wish this had been the early match instead of the NE Derby. I could have afforded to have missed this one./
Two minutes of stoppage time.
This is the third largest capacity in the Prem. There will be lots of empty seats if this is what the fans have in store for them
Jordan Ibe wins a corner, which Bournemouth will take quickly.
Winny Reid has been booked.
Jordan Ibe wins a corner off of Winnie Reid and he stupidly talks himself into the book
Not an inspiring first half at the City of London Stadium. The occasion deserved better. It ends 0-0.
A poor corner from, Sunday Surman is cleared by the first man and it's 0-0 at the end of a mind numbingly boring first half.
The first ever second half is underway from the Olympic Stadium
The Cherries win a corner.
Adrian miss judges the corner from Ryan Fraser then Sam Byram bails him out.
Adam Smith has a long range effort easily saved. The first shot on target for the Cherries.
Tore fouls Ryan Fraser as the Cherries start the second half on the front foot.
Josh King puts through Jordan Ibe and he took too long to shoot and wins a corner instead of putting the Cherries in the lead.
The corner from Charlie Daniels is cleared.
Adrian does well to tip over a long range effort from Josh King. Ryan Fraser is high and wide off the corner from Jordan Ibe.
Tore nearly gives the Hammers the lead , volleying a cross from Antonio inches wide
I'm back after lunch now; doesn't look from your comments as if it's improved.
Valencia is replaced by young Argie striker, Callieri. Home fans are not pleased that Valencia took a long time to come off.
Welcome back. It has improved a little, but not too much
Not sure why Valencia took his sweet time coming off. They are at 0-0, you know. Whatever - he's replaced by Calleri.
Jordan Ibe turns and shoots straight to Adrian
If Bournemouth were to nick a goal here, which they're quite capable of, would Slavan be at risk?
The home fans were none too pleased. If I were Slaven, I wouldn't be pleased either.
The Cherries were the more attacking team the first ten minutes. If they take the lead I somehow don't see the Hammers coming back.
Mark Noble fouls Jordan Ibe.,
An atrocious free kick from Jordan Ibe goes out of play.
Play stops as there is a collision between Simon Francis and the Coyote.
Now they're all having a leisurely water break - do any of these players realize there is a football match that's supposed to be going on here today?
Former West Ham manager Alan Pardew is in the crowd, probably muttering about the new place being “a bit flash."
Twenty minutes left for this one to turn into a match.
Antonio fails to take advantage of a great cross from Calleri.
Calleri with a great ball in but Antonio was unable to do anything with it - hopeless.
I agree. They're all more concerned about the pomp and circumstance than playing in a football match
Sam Byram has been tidy at full-back but no more. He had the chance of being a real playmaker and skippering the side at LUFC. Look at him now - he's anonymous.
Callum Wilson, who scored a hat-trick at Upton Park last season is replaced by Lewis who hopes to be Grabban a winner.
Nice one, mate - boom boom!
I agree. The move up usually results in diminished playing time.
Cheers, mate. This match needs something.
Harry Arter is sent off for a second yellow for a needless foul on the Coyote.
Harry After gets a second yellow for a cynical challenge. He's off for an early bath. Bournemouth down to ten men. So, this special occasion has been graced with a red card - but no goals.
Eddie Howe responds by bringing on Nathan Ake for his Cherries debut in place of Jordan Ibe. James Collins tries to help him off since he's taking his sweet time coming off.
Jordan Ibe also trudges off and James Collins tries to help him off.
Finally West Ham are in some kind of a hurry. Took their time about it!
Tore wins a Hammers corner. The corner is headed away the MNassioku is called for a foul
Was that the first silly red of the season?
And the Hammers have thrown Ashley Fletcher on. He's one of your academy lads, apparently. Nordveidt off.
Ashley Fletcher is on for Nordveit. He sounds like a more attack minded player.
Well - it could well be. Although, I think that Gooner really intended it to be the second yellow that was for a silly offense (over celebration, back chat to the ref) and not the first one. I think I'll hold off on assigning the points.
That's my understanding. He was on loan to Barnsley last season, scoring in the L1 playoff Final vs the Evil Lions
He might be the first second yellow of the season. I think Ben Watson received the first straight red of the season last week for Watford vs the Saints.
GOAL! Antonio comes good!!
GOAL !!!ANTONIO SCORES THE FIRST EVER GOAL AT THE OLYMPIC STADIUM. ANTONIO PUT IN A CROSS . TORE CHASED IT DOWN THEN HIS CROSS WAS HEADED IN BY ANTONIO AT THE FAR POST WITH A FREE HEADER.
A bit lucky there - Antonio had originally crossed hopelessly to no one. But when Tore collected on the other side, he stood a lovely ball up for Antonio to finish.
1-0 WH!
Bournemouth drop into the bottom three with that goal.
Dan Gosling is on for Ryan Fraser. I'm not sure how that helps when the Cherries need a goal with about five minutes remaining.
Josh King has a deflected cross punched out by Adrian for a corner.
Ake heads out the cross from Sunday Surman
Hammers fans have finally come to life and are blowing bubbles, pretty bubbles in the air.
The final roll of the dice from Slaven as Obbiang is on for Tore in the hopes that the Hammers can preserve their slender lead.
Obiang comes on and immediately picks up a yellow. Free kick chance for the Bees.
At least those bubbles won't burst and I guess the home fans will celebrate with some bubbly.
Sorry - the Cherries - I always get that wrong.
Four minutes of stoppage time to come. Should have been more but no one will complain.
Four minutes of stoppage time as a Hammers counter comes to naught.
Oh - great chance for the Cherries to equalize but Adrian blocked. And it's cleared.
Adrian makes a great save off a long throw from Steve Cook.
Josh King probably could have done better there but he was falling over as he volleyed.
A great save from Josh King then a great block from Winnie Reid.
Another long throw chance for the Cherries.
Oh - Calleri ran the full length of the pitch after the clearance but then put his shot wide.
Another long throw from Cook. It's headed away by Byram and Mark Noble finds Calleri on the break,. He blows it as he shoots wide with just Boruc o break and the Hammers hang on to win 1-0.
Final whistle - In the end it doesn't matter. West Ham have won on their debut in the City of London Stadium. Antonio becomes a trivia answer.
The Hammers were not impressive , but start off in the Olympic Stadium with a victory
Well, it was a pleasure to have your company again today, mate. I'm hoping that we'll have UWS back from NC next weekend (and maybe some others around?).
I'm off to do my Sunday errands. Cheerio for now!
That will definitely be a pub question in parts of East London for years to come.
It was great chatting with you. Enjoy the rest of your weekend . Cheers!
