A Day of Two Big Finals!
For the first time in footballing history, the US Women's and Men's national teams are involved in major finals. First up, it's the US Women's team in their World Cup Final against the Netherlands. Later tonight, the US Men's team take on mighty Mexico in the Gold Cup Final.
Join me for all of the big final action here on the LOB today!

Morning, chaps - the US women have gone on a remarkable run to get here. Through the knockout rounds against Spain, France and England (all 2-1 decisions), the games have been increasingly breathtaking.
The team news out of Paris this morning:
USA: Naeher / Dunn, Sauerbrunn, Dahlkemper, O’Hara / Lavelle, Ertz, Mewis / Rapinoe, Morgan, Heath
Netherlands: van Veenendaal / Bloodworth, van der Gragt, Dekker, van Lunteren / Spitse, van de Donk, Groenen / Martens, Miedema, Beerensteyn
Rapinoe back in the line-up for the US. Dekker in for van Dongen at the back for the Netherlands.
Good morning, Bob. How have you been? Here to join you for the two finals.
The U.S. aiming to retain the WC for the first time in their history. The only other team to repeat as WWC champions was Germany in 2003 and 2007, the only times they have won the WWC
Morning, David - great to have you on board. I'm finishing a lovely holiday weekend with these matches.
Morning Boys
Thanks, Bob. Glad to join you. Having a great vacation and here after watching the fireworks in a nearby town last night
Good morning, Dave. Happy Birthday. That should bring positive vibes to both U.S. teams.
Morning. Finished up just in time to join you for this. I'm a bit disappointed that Ellis has continued to leave Horan on the bench. She's earned a starting role. I hope the USA prevails.
The Gooner will be interested to note that the Arsenal women's team contained four Dutch WC players this past season.
Thank you David!
The first World Cup Final in my memory was 45 years ago today
Rotten West Germany beat the great Dutch
Will the Dutch win today...I doubt i
Good morning, Steve. Glad we have a strong Barber Shop blogging quartet.
We are off
The anthems are over and we're set to go. JP Dellacamera on the mic for this match.
They're off from Lyon.
US have scored inside the first 15 minutes of every game
Lyon the home of the most dominant women's team in the CL.
Morning, chaps - great to have all of you together for this one.
I never get a chance to see the Arsenal ladies. And their success has been in marked contrast to the mediocrity suffered by the men at the Em for a while. USA all the way.
Great info, Dave. Didn't realize that this is the second the Dutch have played in a WC Final on your birthday. Should be two losses.
The camera seems higher than normal
The US doing the early attacking.
The goalscorer for the Dutch in the semi is a new signing for the new Premier League team...Manchester United
Correct, Dave.Strange as it may seem, The longest they took to score was against Thailand , which was 12 minutes. The floodgates opened after that
Yeah UWS, the camera seems very remote from the field.
Man United women's team was promoted to the Prem for the first time ever. replacing Yeovil , who were bottom in both the men and women's leagues
So, here's a stupid question for you. Do the women's teams (e.g,, ManYoo, Arsenal) play in the same stadia as the men?
Do you have any memories of that Final 45 years ago?
I don't remember the 70 but I do have vivid memories of every World Cup Final since
The first real memories of FA Cup Finals was in 72...Sorry Steve... Bob liked it!
United don't... but they're new
Comedy capers in the Dutch defense not taken advantage of.
That Dutch goal scorer is also a full time law student at a Dutch university. Quite a achievement to do that and be a full time footballer.
The Dutch are definitely just trying to absorb the pressure and play Beerenstein on the break.
My first WC Final was the 1978 Final and first FA Cup Final was 1977.
The Dutch have been under the cosh, but the U.S. have not been able to test the Dutch Arsenal keeper.
I'm the same, Dave. I don't really have any memory of watching the 70 Final. But I remember the 74 Final, which we watched down at the beach in Italy.
The Dutch have scored almost all their goals in the second half plus that ET winner in the semi.
Arsenal's women play at Boreham Wood's Meadow Park.
Spitse, the Dutch set piece expert , with an early booking for a nasty challenge on Rose LaVelle.
First free kick chance for the US - cleared out easily.
Great FA Cup Final to remember MUR
Free kick from Tobin Heat headed away
Julie Ertz lectured for a foul on Dominique Bloodworth
We watched Mexico '70 in the TV room of the Hotel Marconi Bob. We were on the floor because of the SRO situation there.
Thanks, Dave. It was a great final, especially at the start of the second half.
I do have quite a few finals on this day
Men's World Cup Final
Women's World Cup Final
Men's Wimbledon Final
Women's Wimbledon Final
Must be something special about this day!!!
Also Live Earth concert on 07/07/07
Sadly, the London Bombings were today too
Lucky you Steve remembering the 70 Brazil team
Foul throw?
This is the longest the U.S. have gone without scoring this W.C.
Bugger! Happy birthday, Dave!!!
What do you mean bugger?
Thanks
Your birthday is quite an eventful day. Last it was England defeating Sweden in the quarters /A shame it wasn't a repeat in the third place match yesterday
I mean - I can't believe I forgot your birthday this morning. Sorry about that.
Oh... didn't notice!
MUR said it earlier on this thread!
Way to ignore the comments!!
What happened a year ago today?
I was completely taken with the Peruvians. Bob and I were sharing a Panini album and we got all the Peruvian players petty quickly. That classic red sash. (swoon)
Didn't see it - I'm off my game.
Ah well, your birthday is numerically difficult to remember. ;-)
Here's some interesting WWC Final trivia. The U.S. or Germany have played in every final, but both have not faced each other in the final.
All week I've been enjoying the pictures from our World Cup fortnight last year popping up again on Facebook. Great memories.
Last year on your birthday, England defeated Sweden in the quarters
Agreed. Fantastic memories.
Correct David
The Dutch brass band are apparently fans of the Pet Shop Boys.
Happy birthday Dave. Hope your 5-a-side fam-mates made it a happy one for you.
My sister Lisa and her grandson Josh are coming for a visit this Thursday
The U.S. win their second corner.
Fantastic - say hi to Lisa for me. I don't think I've seen her since 1983 or so.
OH!!!! Great save by the Dutch keeper off the corner then the rebound was blasted over.
Nice save by the Dutch keeper
JPD said the corner was hit low
No...it was mis-hit
Will do
Was that the last time you were in UK?
Sounds like a great visit. Say hello to Lisa from us.
Water break now as there is an injury on the pitch.
Correct. Rapinoe doesn't hit a consistently good corner. And I can't fathom why. Her frees are on the money.
England in another semi final this week
They meet the Aussies in the Cricket World Cup semi
That was the last time I was in East Anglia because my parents moved to Belgium that next summer and then moved back to Oxfordshire the year after.
JPD... I hate him!
Apart from his minute comments I have spoke about... he also gets excited about NOTHING
Hope they do better in the semis than the footie teams.
My last time in England was 1983. Flew to the U.S. early July of '83.
Didn't like Phil Nev yesterday first saying that they were going all out to win the match and then afterwards saying... what a meaningless game
Heath seems the real danger for the US. Rapinoe has been a bit quiet, probably still nursing that hammy strain.
Another U.S. corner.
Again it's low...no...again it was a modern day pathetic corner
Another poor corner easily cleared.
Again! Disappointing corner. Rapinoe is turning into Xhaka before our eyes.
I can only remember one shot on goal so far
Agreed, Dave. Didn't like him saying it was a meaningless game and that it was hard to get up for the match. It was just as hard for Sweden.
The Little Neviller didn't really distinguish himself during this tournament. First, he copied Gareth Southgate's WC look, then he complained about just about every opponent. The whole US Spygate thing was a joke. Whined a lot about VAR.
Holland's manager played her college footie at U.N.C. Should be familiar with U.S. footie.
This hasn't been a classic. The Dutch are just setting out to frustrate.
Agreed, Bob. He did the bare minimum. Also didn't like his remarks. Expected better from an England manager.
Modern day football again... defenders trying to be Maradona!
Bit of a shove on Alex Morgan in the box there. She went down looking for something. Nothing doing from the ref. Seen them given.
Phil is a fool. He's not clever enough to speak off the cuff, and his footballing nous has never been proven. If he'd not had a great generation of Lionesses, he'd be just another anonymous former footballer shouting at women for a living. I bet he gets a shot at a Championship mens team and totally tanks it'.
That barge was not shoulder to shoulder!
Alex Morgan goes down as the U.S. win a corner. She basically lost her balance.
That's why I hate VAR... so inconsistent!
oooh... US go so close there
Another good save
They go close again
Even Leeds defenders were trying to play out of the back under Bielsa last year, often to disastrous ends.
By the way, apparently Pontus Jansson has created a ruck in the LUFC dressing room and is on his way out of the club.
Corner from Tobin Heath headed away then a great save by the Dutch keeper then Tobin Heath with a shot blocked. Then a near post save by Rappinoe.
It's coming. The Dutch keeper is having another blinder.
Crowd starting to make some noise...now it's stopped again
I'd love to see Phil take over a Championship rival and tank it.
The US are at least knocking on the door now.
No, not Pontius. Who will I pick for first off for a red in the pool now?
Agreed, Steve. I think making the semis was barely enough for him to keep his job. If England doesn't have a strong run at the Euros then surely, he is out
Oh - another big save from the Dutch keeper from Morgan!
I saw Pontus was off to Brentford
Another good save by this keeper
WOW a shot from Alex Morgan is superbly turned around the post. The Dutch corner off the corner, but the U.S. recover.
Dahlgren booked for a foul on Berensteyn on a Dutch counter. Bob was booked.
LOL! My money is on Phil Jagielka who has washed up at Sheffield United as an OAP.
Spitze is a superb set piece taker. Has four assists from set pieces this W.C.
My kind of foul, eh, MUR?
The free kick from Spitze is deflected for a corner. Her corner is cleared
My sources verify that it was a typical challenge from you.
Two minutes of stoppage time to come. And now a head clash.
A pair of those as there's a c;ash of heads. O'Hara and a Dutch player.
The Dutch player is Maartens.
Spitze with a long range effort deflected for a corner.
Dangerous period here in stoppage time for the US.
The U.S. clear of ping pong in the U.S. box.
Mad scramble in the US box... can't clear it... finally they do
HT 0-0...just perfect for the US sports fans!
And that's it for the first half. The US team might well appreciate the ability to regroup in the dressing room.
It's 0-0 at the half.
Ten Day from today...THE TWO MIGHTY UNITEDS meet Down Under
Teams out of for the second half
US make one change... could have been for the head injury before half
We are off
Second half underway and Alex Morgan wins a corner as she got past Decker.
We're back on for the second half. Ali Krueger has come on for the US to replace O'Hara who took that knock at the end of the first half.
Julie Ertz heads wide from the corner.
Another near post corner....comes to nothing
Why do they insist to keep doing it
These corners have got to improve for the US.
Verification that the substitution was due to an injury.
Netherlands are European Champs
I thin k both our Uniteds are doing a pre season tour of Australia . Wonder if that match is being played there. It's a dreaded noon kickoff GDT.
Correct. They've come out of nowhere to be a powerhouse. Quite an accomplishment.
U.S. first team to play in three consecutive WWC Finals.
Long range U.S. not well Dunn.
Useless effort by JPD...gets so excited about the cut in and the woeful shot
Becky Sauerbrun down for the U.S.
Sauerbrunn will need to come off for treatment now.
Down off a clash of heads with Van de Donk.
Her forehead appears to be bleeding.
Sauerbrun back on the pitch.
Rapinoe with a long throw now - are the USWNT Stoke City is disguise?
The 2 United play each other in Perth
Kick off at 7 am EST
The U.S. win a corner off a cross as Alex Morgan is down
Hight boot there
Is VAR going to check it out?
They are
VAR check now for that high boot.
That was a high high boot
Surely it is a pen
Here she comes... PENALTY
The ref is going to consult VAR for a possible penalty. it seemed a clumsy high footed challenge.
It is a penalty to the US!
Do they rename this tournament the VAR Cup
And a yellow card for the Dutch player.
PENALTY U.S Stefanie Van Der Gragt booked for that challenge.
Rapinoe to take, of course....
strokes it home easily.
1-0 USA!
Purple Hair to take...One Nil US
YESSSSSSSSSSS!!!! RAPPINOE SCORES FROM THE SPOT AS THE U.S. TAKES THE LEAD. KEEPER DIDN'T MOVE.
Wasn't a good penalty...should have been saved
This should open up the match a bit. The Dutch will have to come out and play a bit.
The Dutch will be forced to come out of their defensive shell and trailing for the first time this tournament.
The Dutch player... get a shot off
Just as I'd predicted - it's end to end now.
Rappinoe and Alex Morgan tied with half a dozen goals. The tie breaker for golden boot is assists.
Rappinoe with a hat-trick of assists in the lead for the golden boot. Three out of six goals have been penalties.
Looks like Gaza is warming up for the Dutch
Watched an interesting program on Sir Bobby Robson on Netflix yesterday
TWO NIL
NICE GOAL
GOAL! What a strike!
YESSSSSSSSSSS!!!! ROSE LAVELLE PUTS THE U.S. TWO UP WITH A WELL PLACED SHOT FROM JUST OUTSIDE THE BOX.
Oh - Heath nearly in for a third - they're all over the Dutch now!
It started with a well Dunn tackle at the halfway line on Van De Donck . The ball broke to Mewes. She passed to LaVelle, who went on a long run and scored with a well placed shot.
Useless by Morgan this time
Great close range block then the keeper does well to gather at the feet of Alex Morgan.
Here comes Gaza
JPDC said that Rappinoe is the oldest to score in a WWC Final at age 34.
Terrible last touch by Morgan
She has lightning speed, but her passing and crossing is really awful. Doubt she will give the U.S. any problems.
Morgan has not been very good today
Doesn't she know she needs a goal to touch another gold
Oh - Dunn with nearly a wonder goal there. Keeper did well.
ANOTHER HUGE miss by US
The finishing is atrocious
It was a good save but put it to the side of the keeper
Does Thomas still have a massive crush on Alex Morgan?
OH!!! Nice through ball from Rappinoe, but Crystal Dunn took too long to shoot and her shot was pushed around for a corner. The corner from Rappinoe headed well wide.
If not for the Dutch keeper, this would have been over a long time ago.
I think it has passed
Berensteyn shoots straight at Naer. Took a slight deflection off of Julie Ertz.
Agreed. The U.S could be eight up.
Rapinoe coming off now to a hero's ovation.
Like for like as Cristen press is on for Rappinoe, who gets a standing ovation. Press scored a great header against England , deputizing for Rappinoe.
Press is on to imPress
Free kick chance now for the Dutch.
Oh - just wide.
Oooh, just wide from free kick
Wall...ducks...not that intelligent
Free kick for the Dutch. Spitze takes and it deflects just wide. The ref says goal kick.
So much different being three up instead of two
When is Van Der Kerkoph coming on?
BOOM , BOOM, DAVE. Great birthday pun. Hard PRESSed to top that.
Oh - Morgan with another weak effort.
Another chance missed
Offside called late... hate that too
Weren't they twin brothers that played for the Dutch national team in the 70s. Also played for PSV
