Lakenheath Old Boys

We are all former students at Lakenheath High School and other public schools in East Anglia. We were in school in the 70s and 80s and drank deeply from the well of British culture of those decades - the pints, the telly, and of course the footie!

Project Restart?

As we've been chatting about this week, there are plans afoot for a possible restart of the 2019/2020 Premier League season on the weekend of June 13. I think it's sheer madness - I'd far prefer to abandon the season, announce Liverpool as champions, forgo the relegation process and promote the top two from the Championship. Then, everyone's happy. I'm just not sure how they pull any of it off.

But, here's a thoughtful and informative piece from the Guardian about the plans: https://www.theguardian.com/football/2020/apr/29/premier-leagues-project-restart-what-is-it-and-is-it-feasible

A Footie Quiz for a Weekend Conspicuously Absent of Footie

Well, it's yet another weekend with the good stuff, sadly, but at least the Guardian has been favoring us with some cracking quizzes recently. Here's one on great goalscorers. I only got a paltry 6/10 of them correctly; surely, you can do better than that mid-table performance. Give it a go here, eh?

The Great Yarmouth Madame Tussaud's Museum

I just found out that Madam Tussaud's had an East Anglia outpost in Great Yarmouth. If you thought the first Skippy Ronaldo statue was bad, Great Yarmouth says, "Hold my beer." The show starts HERE

Real Dons , Fake Dons, Wimbledon, all Dons

Due to the long term footie cancellations, I thought of an intriguing quiz question. In 2004 Wimbledon moved to MK and became what we term the Fake Dons. This leads into the quiz question. Who is the only player that has played every season with the Fake Dons during their existence, including this season? He even played two seasons with the old Wimbledon.

Now for the Bonus question : Who is the only other current active player that has played for both Wimbledon and the Fake Dons? He only played twice for the old Wimbledon and is currently playing for a different club than the Fake Dons.

Both players have well known fathers, if that helps.

When Will Footie Return?

Hiya, chaps! Another weekend with no footie, sadly. I can't tell you how much I've missed getting up early on a Saturday morning and watching the good stuff along with your companionship. So, I was intrigued by this New York Times article this week that discussed the timeline and conditions for the return of professional sports both in this country and in other countries.

The author Andrew Keh imagines a return to matches albeit played behind closed doors without fans. That's always been an oddity when we've seen that in the past, in the cases of bad behavior on the part of club or countries' fans. But I'd take it right now, wouldn't you lot?

You can read it here: https://www.nytimes.com/2020/04/16/sports/coronavirus-sports-come-back.html

I'd love to hear your thoughts on it.

RIP Tim Brooke-Taylor (

Sad news this morning that another one of our childhood favorites, Tim Brooke-Taylor or the Goodies, has died of complications due to this terrible virus at the age of 79. Tim came up with the same generation of British comedians in the Cambridge Footlights tradition as the Python crew and created many of the comedy highlights of our youth. I absolutely loved The Goodies - I'll be trying to track down a YouTube version of "Ecky Thump" to watch today. RIP Tim - thanks for all of the laughs.

Soccer's Coming Storm

We've now lived through a month without our precious football. I've been giving a lot of thought to the status of The Beautiful in the wake of this current pandemic. The New York Times this morning published a really interesting article about the consequences for British clubs. It's a fascinating read and I'd love to hear your thoughts.
