Lakenheath Old Boys

We are all former students at Lakenheath High School and other public schools in East Anglia. We were in school in the 70s and 80s and drank deeply from the well of British culture of those decades - the pints, the telly, and of course the footie!

ShamWow Pitchman Arrested!

In my on-going obsession with all things ShamWow, I'd be remiss if I didn't mention the recent arrest of ShamWow pitchman Vince Shlomi - the man with the headset - for battering a prostitute in Miami.

You can read all the sordid details by cutting the pasting the link below:

80s Trivia of the Week

The rules for this one couldn't be simpler - I give you the memorable first line of the 80s pop hit - you give me the name of the tune.

1. "I bought a toothbrush, some toothpaste, a flannel for my face, pajamas, a hairbrush, new shoes and a case."

2. "Dig, if you will, a picture of you and I engaged in a kiss."

3. "You were working as a waitress in a cocktail bar when I met you."

4. "Broken glass everywhere, people pissin' on the stairs, you know they just don't care."

5. "He's laughing with another girl and playing with another heart."

6. "There was a guy got killed by 10,000 lbs. of sludge from New York and New Jersey."

7. "Now the king told the boogie men you have to let that raga drop."

8. "Welcome to your life, there no turning back; even while we sleep, we will find you."

9. "You put the boom-boom into my heart, you send my soul sky high when the lovin' starts."

10. "And you may find yourself living in a shotgun shack; and you may find yourself living in another part of the world."

11. "I used to think maybe you loved me, now baby I'm sure."

12. "So much for your promises, they died the day you let me go."

Best of luck, folks!

El Salvador vs. USA Live!

It's the end of a long, lovely day of the beautiful game. We've witnessed wins for the Mighty LUFC and England. (I won't mention the Red Bulls-Revs match which is on-going).

Now it's time for the U.S. to put the imperial hammer down on CONCACAF minnows El Salvador.

INTERNATIONAL FOOTBALL

So, we take a break from the Premiership to concentrate on World Cup Qualifying this week. England don't have a qualifier until Wednesday but have an interesting friendly at Wembley.
Of course, the Mighty Leeds take on MK Dons at Elland Road.

Jon Stewart Drops an Anvil on Jim Cramer

Last night's debate between Jon Stewart and CNBC's Jim Cramer on the Daily Show was the culmination of what the mainstream media has been treating as a silly feud between media stars. Instead, it got to the heart of the current financial crisis and provided the most visceral tv moment you'll see all year. Enjoy!

Nick Hornby's Favorite Books

Just when you thought that your reading agenda was busy enough already, along comes LOB favorite Nick Hornby with his top 40 reads, drafted as part of a promotion for Waterstone's bookstores. Nick's list includes some classics (David Copperfield), some contemporary favorites (Empire Falls), and of course books on music (Sweet Soul Music) and footie (Brilliant Orange). As with any list, though, there are surprises and suggestions that may go straight onto your wish list or bedside table. Cut and paste the link below for Nick's discussion of list from the Times:
http://entertainment.timesonline.co.uk/tol/arts_and_entertainment/books/article5814281.ece

The article links to the Waterstone's website with Nick's original list and his comments in his own handwriting. Enjoy!

Oldham vs. Leeds Live!

It's not often that I get a chance to watch my Leeds boys play, so I'm relishing our trip to Oldham today. Jermaine Beckford scored a brace in our win against Scunthorpe on Saturday. More of the same is in order today. Come on, you Whites!

One More Reason to Stay Up Late

Jimmy Fallon takes over Conan O'Brien's "Late Night" slot on NBC at 12:30 a.m. tonight. That's great news for insomniacs like me, as Fallon was one of the funniest cast members on SNL during the early part of this decade. Even better Fallon has made the wise choice to go hip with his band, choosing my favorite hip hop ensemble The Roots as his house group. Should be fun. I'll be watching - will you?
