Qatar 2022 - Day 11

Morning, chaps - I'm still recovering from the glorious day yesterday - with both England and the US advancing to the Round of 16 - and we're on to the next set of final group games. Today, it's the turn of Groups C and D. France have already advanced out of Group D, but everything else is up for grabs. My hope is that today's play will produce a France v. Argentina match-up in the R16.

Join me for all the thrills and spills.

Qatar 2022 - Day 10 - The Big One!

Morning, chaps - it's a very big day at the Qatar 2022 World Cup. Now that we're through two rounds of group stage matches, we're on to sorting out who will progress from these groups starting with Groups A and B today. So far, only three sides - France, Brazil and Portugal - have qualified for the R16, while only two - the hosts Qatar and Canada - have been eliminated. We start out with Group A at 10am this morning but most of us will have our eyes firmly on those Group B matches at 2pm this afternoon, with England taking on Wales and the US taking on Iran.

Join me for all the drama today, won't you?

World Cup 2022 Match Day 2 Update

Good Evening everyone. Every team at the World Cup has played two matches and some changes have occurred with some of the favorites nearly eliminated while some surprise teams are in the top two of their groups. Here are the latest standings after two rounds of group matches have been completed. Kylian Mbappe and Enner Valencia both have scored three goals , but the tiebreaker goes to Mbappe as he beats Valencia 1-0 on assists. Several of us were awarded eight points for that pick.Wayne Hennessey became the first player sent off and as of today has been the only player sent off. That means that there is a point  available for the first player in the pool sent off. Is that correct, Bob? Tomorrow through Friday starts the last group matches with two matches played simultaneously per group with kickoffs at 10 AM and 2 PM EST.Here are the latest standings

1. Gooner - 36 points

    MUR- 36 points

3. MOT- 33 poiints

4. Teddy Goalesevelt- 30 points

5 Red Devil - 29 points

6. WHR- 25 points

7. UWS- 24 points

8. Bees Knees- 22 points

    Blubber Boy - 22 points

    Blue Devil - 22 points

    Swansong- 22 points

12. oticoN- 21 points

      Red Dragon- 21 points

Qatar 2022 - Day 9 The End of Round 2

Morning, chaps! Just like that, we're rounding off the second group of group stage matches at Qatar 2022, with matches from Groups G and H. As usual, it starts early doors with naff matches between the likes of Cameroon and Serbia (at 5am) and South Korea and Ghana (at 8am). By the time I've finished my morning routine of diaper changes and feeding the twins, I'll be settling in for Brazil v. Switzerland at 11am. It'll be fascinating to see how the Selecao get on without their talisman Neymar. Finally, the action wraps up with Portugal v. Uruguay at 2pm.

Join me if you're watching won't you?

Marc Maron Live with David Baddiel

Hi there, LOBers - I just wanted to give you the heads-up that comedian and podcaster Marc Maron's "WTF" show this week is a live on-stage conversation with LOB favorite David Baddiel, who with Frank Skinner, was responsible for the "Three Lions" England anthem and the late, lamented Fantasy Football League show on ITV. Check it out on iTunes or wherever you get your podcasts.

Qatar 2022 - Day 8

Morning, chaps - we're onto the second group matches in Groups E and F today. We start early doors with Japan v. Costa Rica where Japan surprisingly has a chance to become the second side after France to qualify for the Round of 16. That's followed by Belgium, who were underwhelming in their win over Canada, against Morocco. At 11am we've got the other match in Group F between Croatia and Canada. Finally, we reach the climax at 2pm with Germany v. Spain, a pairing that has been a past World Cup Final. Now the Iberians have a chance to knock the four-time champions out of the tournament a mere week into it. I could be a humbling day for German footer fans. Cheers!

Qatar 2022 - Day 7

A very good Saturday morning too all of you! We've got a fascinating weekend ahead of us. Groups C and D wrap up today, starting with the usual early morning dud featuring Group D also-rans Australia and Tunisia. That's followed by the Group C clash between Saudi Arabia and Poland. The Saudis are coming off that shock win against the Argies. Can they keep it going? At 11am, we've got the marquee match-up in Group D between France and Denmark. Then we wrap it up at 2pm with Argentina trying to rescue their campaign against Mexico.

So far, Qatar is the only team that's been eliminated, while no one has quite booked their tickets to the next round. That should change today. Let's be having ya!

Qatar 2022 - Day 6 - A Very Big Day!

Morning, chaps! This is the day that we've been waiting for since the draw was made, the most crucial day in Group B, where England face the US in the marquee match at 2pm. I'd like to see a comfortable win for England that would qualify them for the Round of 16 but not an embarrassing loss for the US. The day starts with Wales v. Iran, the other match in Group B. In between, we've got the two Group A matches, starting wtih hosts Qatar v. Senegal at 8am. At 11am it's the two winners in the first round of matches - the Netherlands and Ecuador.

Join me for a good natter today -- come on, England!

World Cup 2022 Matchday 1 Update

Happy Thanksgiving everyone. Hope everyone is enjoying the World Cup despite it being a highly unusual tournament at a highly unusual time of the year. After checking both FOTMOB and the BEEB website I notice that fair play as a tiebreaker. If the teams were level in all categories after that then alphabetical order was the tiebreaker. The main upsets were the Saudis defeating the Argies and Japan defeating Germany. Just as in the PPP, Red Devil leads the standings in a competitive race . Here are the standings:

1. Red Devil -34 points

2. Teddy Goalesevelt- 32 points'

3. MOT-30 points

4. UWS- 29 points

5. Bees Knees - 27 points

     Swansong- 27 points

7. MUR- 26 points

8. WHR- 25 points

9. Blubber Boy- 24 points

    Gooner - 24 points

11. Blue Devil -23 points

      oticoN- 23 points

13. Red Dragon- 23 points

Qatar 2022 - Day 5 - Happy Thanksgiving!

Happy Thanksgiving, chaps - we round off the first set of group matches today with fixtures from Groups G and H. Group G is dominated by tournament favorites Brazil, so we'll have our first look at Neymar and co as they run up against Serbia this afternoon at 2pm. The undercard to that marquee match starts again at the ungodly hour of 5am with an unappetizing Group G match-up between Switzerland and Cameroon. Then it's Group H's turn, starting at 8am with the elder statesmen of Uruguay versus the youngsters of South Korea. Then it's Ronaldo time as Portugal start their campaign against Ghana.

Join me throughout the day, won't you?

World Cup Trivia Time!

Okay, guys - since you had fun with the last trivia question, so here's another one from the 606 pod:

"There are sixteen players at Qatar 2022 who have appeared in four World Cups. How many can you name? (Bonus points if you can name the four players who are appearing in their fifth World Cup!)"

Good luck!

Qatar 2022 - Day 4

Morning, chaps - today feels like the roll out of many of the major sides at Qatar 2022. I'll be fascinated to see if any of them can match the scintillating form of England and France. It all starts with Morocco v. Croatia, a fixture that will really test the ability of fans in North America to get up at 5am. That's followed more promisingly by the start of the German campaign against Japan, an intriguing match -up. At 11am, Spain get going against the Ticos of Costa Rica. Finally, one of the tournament favorites Belgium kick off against Canada in what is the first match for the Mounties since we were in college.

Join me for all the fun tomorrow, won't you?

Tuesday, November 22, 2022

Qatar 2022 - Day 3

Morning, chaps - Day 3 is the first one with four matches throughout the day. The action starts at the crack of dawn with Lionel Messi and Argentina's opener against Saudi Arabia. I'll be honest - unless the twins wake me up, I'm going to sleep through this one. It's followed by two fairly rubbish matches that really should have been scheduled in the middle of the night - Denmark v. Tunisia at 8am and Mexico v. Poland at 11am. Finally, the current World Champions France kick off against the Socceroos at 2pm.

I'll be catching up on errands and grading through much of the day but join me if you're watching.

World Cup Trivia Time

We haven't had one of these famous LOB features for a while, but I heard a great question on the 606 podcast that I thought I might run by you:

"There are six former Premier League players who have managed teams at World Cups. How many can you name?"

Good luck!

Monday, November 21, 2022

Qatar 2022 - Day 2 - Come on, England!

Morning, chaps! We're on to Group B - England and the US' group - this morning. When the draw was made, my immediate hope was that England would win all three matches and that the US would beat both Iran and Wales, thus ensuring that both sides would get through to the Round of Sixteen. It all starts this morning with England taking on Iran in the opener and culminates with the US taking on Wales in probably the most crucial match in the group. In between the Dutch get started with their Group A work against Senegal.

See you early doors! Come on England!

Welcome to the Qatar 2022 World Cup!

Morning, chaps! It's here at last. The 2022 World Cup, which should have taken place last June, kicks off this morning. I'm settling in to watch the Opening Ceremonies and the opening match between the hosts and Ecuador. I've got a lot of friends who are boycotting this World Cup but I can't do it. If you're watching, too, join me this morning.

Qatar 2022 Preview - Group H

Rounding off this series of group previews for the Qatar 2022 World Cup, here are my thoughts on Group H:

Prospects: Group H is one of the most evenly balanced groups in the tournament, with a chance for all four teams to progress. Portugal and Uruguay would seem to have the richest pedigrees, having won big tournaments in the past; however, that counts for little when it comes to the heat of a tournament. Both sides have plenty of quality and experience but there is a worry for both of them that their best days are beyond them. If there is going to be an upset in the form, it's likely to come from South Korea, who are a well-organized side under manager Paulo Bento with a world class striker in Tottenham's Son Heung-min. Son's fractured eye socket in a Champions League match may be one of the most pressing narratives in the group. Ghana's Black Stars are possibly the least likely to emerge from this group, having faced a loss of form with only two wins in the last 12 matches. However, as they showed in their playoff over a strong Nigerian side, they carry some danger with a side full of Premier League veterans.

One to Watch: Real Madrid's Uruguayan starlet Federico Valverde has been lighting up La Liga all season and could be one of the shining lights of this tournament.

Most Likely to see Red: If Uruguayan striker Luis Suarez is a bit peckish, he might well go in for a nibble again.

Most Likely to Attempt a "Panenka:" If Portuguese schemer Bruno Fernandez can pry the ball out of Cristiano Ronaldo's hands, he's game for one.

Worst Haircut in the Group: Portuguese midfielder Ruben Neves has a penchant for a shaggy man bun.

Key Match: December 2 - Uruguay v. South Korea (10am EST)

Blue Devil's Crystal Ball Says: It'll all come down to the last round of matches, as it should.

Qatar 2022 Preview - Group G

TGIF, chaps - it's time to chat about Group G at the Qatar 2022 World Cup:

Prospects: Brazil are every pundit's favorite to lift the World Cup this year, and for good reason. They breezed through qualifying, with lots of goals and excitement up front, a solid defensive core and one of the best goalkeepers in the world. Will anyone in Group G challenge them? Doubtful. As with a lot of groups, this will be a tune-up for the favorites and the main drama will be in second place. Cameroon needed a narrow playoff win over Algeria in order to earn their eighth finals appearance and have to rely on lower-level Premier League players in the starting side. Switzerland have an experienced side led as always by Arsenal's Granit Xhaka, who's having a terrific season. Finally, Serbia are the mystery factor in this group, with a balls-out attacking approach but a soft backline, which will make the meeting with Brazil on November 24 one with cracking potential.

One to Watch: If Serbia get going in this group, it will likely be because of the service to Mitrovic provided by Eintract Frankfurt wide man Filip Kostic.

Most Likely to see Red: It's hard to look beyond Serbian bad boy Alexandre Mitrovic, who likes abusing referees and head-butting opponents.

Most Likely to Attempt a "Panenka:" Bayern-based Cameroon striker Eric Choupo -Moting seems a likely candidate.

Worst Haircut in the Group: Whatever Neymar decides to sport in Qatar, it's likely to be, as the kids say, "cheugy."

Key Match: December 2 - Serbia v. Switzerland (2pm EST)

Blue Devil's Crystal Ball Says: The Boys from Brazil will revive our romantic memories of 1970 and 1982...but then I say that every four years.

Thursday, November 17, 2022

Qatar 2022 Preview - Group F

Continuing my series of previews, it's time to discuss the prospects for Group F:

Prospects: With 2018 finalist Croatia and 2018 semi-finalist Belgium in the group, Group E is another very competitive group to watch. Both sides have a wealth of international and high level club experience at their disposal, so the only knock on them is the aging quality of their core. For both the Croatians and especially the Belgians, this is the last opportunity for a golden generation of gifted players to actually win something. As in many of these groups, the other two teams in the group, Canada and Morocco feel as if they're merely making up the numbers. It'll be fun to see the Canadians back on this stage for the first time since 1986 and the Moroccans should be lively.

One to Watch: PSG fullback Achraf is the "wonder boy" of Moroccan football.

Most Likely to see Red: Canada's Porto-based defensive midfielder Stephen Eustaquio is the kind of destroyer who picks up lots of yellows.

Most Likely to Attempt a "Panenka:" His name is Luka (Modric), he lives on the second floor....

Worst Haircut in the Group: I"m not a big fan of Toby Alderweireld's quiff.

Key Match: December 1 - Belgium v. Croatia (10am EST)

Blue Devil's Crystal Ball Says: As that wise sage Alan Hansen once put it, you don't win anything with kids. Belgium and Croatia to march forward from this group into the knock-out rounds.

Qatar 2022 Preview - Group E

Morning, chaps! It's time to chat about Qatar 2022"s Group E, a really intriguing group:

Prospects: If Qatar 2022 has a traditional "Group of Death," this is it, with two former World Cup and European Championship winners in Germany and Spain alongside minnows Costa Rica and Japan. Typically, that would mean an easy path out of the group, but both teams are living a bit on past glories and are fielding aging sides rather than rebuilding. This means that there is a chance for an upset. But are either Japan or Costa Rica capable of taking that chance? That's doubtful, as the Japanese are a typically tidy side without a sharp edge up front, while the Ticos leak too many goals at the back.

One to Watch: Spain will rely on Athletic Bilbao winger Nico Williams for service to striker Alvaro Morata.

Most Likely to see Red: Veteran Costa Rican center back Francisco Calvo is likely to be a bit under the cosh in this group.

Most Likely to Attempt a "Panenka:" Chelsea's German striker Kai Havertz fancies a trick penalty now and again.

Worst Haircut in the Group: Japanese attacking midfielder is a fan of the frosted tips, unfortunately.

Key Match: November 27 - Germany v. Spain (cor!) (2pm EST)

Blue Devil's Crystal Ball Says: Football is a simple game. Twenty two players battle it out for ninety minutes and then the Germans (and the Spanish) win.

Qatar 2022 Preview - Group D

Morning, everybody! If it's Tuesday, it must be time to discuss the prospects for Group D:

Prospects: Didier Deschamps' French side come into this tournament as reigning champions and armed with the most fearsome front-line in world football. They're a lock to be around in the latter stages of the tournament. Their principal rivals in Group D are likely to be Denmark, who have a Christian Eriksen as their midfield general and a host of players in their squad with Champions League experience. The other two sides in the group are likely to be just making up the numbers. Tunisia, to their credit, did top their qualifying group before then defeating Mali to secure their sixth berth in the finals. But they have essentially the same side that failed to get out of an easy group at Russia 2018. Australia took the scenic route to qualifying, covering more territory than Magellan in their quest for a tournament spot. The Socceroos are always entertaining but you'd fancy Karim Benzema and Kilyan Mbappe to open them up, wouldn't you?

One to Watch: Valencia-based Danish midfielder Thomas Delaney is the kind of box-to-box midfielder that every winning side needs. His engine allows Eriksen and Hojberg to work their magic further forward.

Most Likely to see Red: Australia's Aaron Mooy has learned the dark arts of chippy midfield play north o the border at Celtic. Two yellows seems an obvious fate for him.

Most Likely to Attempt a "Panenka:" It has to be one of the French fancy dans, doesn't it? If he weren't injured, I've give Paul Pogba the nod. In his absence, I'll go with Mbappe.

Worst Haircut in the Group: France's Antoine Griezmann sports a different Instagram-ready disaster every month. I'm expecting a pink mullet this time around.

Key Match: November 26 - France v. Denmark (11am EST)

Blue Devil's Crystal Ball Says: I'd love to see a surprise in this group, but my head says otherwise.

Monday, November 14, 2022

Qatar 2022 - Group C Preview

Hiya, chaps - I'm onto Group C today, another fairly competitive group at Qatar 2022.

Prospects: Group C is dominated by Argentina, a traditional power with two World Cups under their belts. Coming out of their Copa America win last year on Brazilian turf, the Albiceleste should be fairly confident of not only getting out of this group relatively unscathed but also reaching the latter stages. This will be Lionel Messi's last chance to make a big impression at a World Cup. Things will get interesting in Group C when it comes to the teams vying for second place, most likely Mexico and Poland.

One to Watch: Charlotte F.C. forward Karol Swiderksi often exists in the background of his more accomplished strike partner Robert Lewandowski, but this could be his chance to light it up on the big stage.

Most Likely to see Red: At 34, Argentina defender Nicolas Otamendi has lost a step or two.

Most Likely to Attempt a "Panenka:" It has to be Leo Messi, of course.

Worst Haircut in the Group: Mexico forward Roberto Alvarado favors an unfortunate parrothead look.

Key Match: November 22 - Mexico v. Poland (11am EST)

Blue Devil's Crystal Ball Says: Don't cry for me, Leo Messi....

Premiership Plus Predictions Week 15 Update

Good evening  everyone and time for our final PPP update heading into the World Cup break. A few changes occurred with Ederson no longer the Golden Gloves leader. He is replaced by Aaron Ramsdale and Nick Pope, who somehow will probably be sitting on the bench in Qatar. The only other changes were in the Championship where the Evil Lions replaced  QPR in the final playoff spot and the Evil Blades and Blackburn swapped second and third place in the table. Here are the final standings heading into the Boxing Day Fixtures :

  Standings:

1. Red Devil - 36 Points

2. Bees Knees - 34 Points

3. Red Dragon- 32 Points

4. Swansong- 31 Points

    MUR- 31 Points

6. MOT- 30 Points

7. Someone Said- 29 Points

8. Teddy Goalesevelt- 27 Points

9. UWS- 24 Points

10. Gooner- 23 Points

11. Blue Devil - 22 Points

      oticoN- 22 Points

13. AZ- 20 Points

14. WHR- 18 Points

Qatar 2022 Preview - Group B

Continuing the previews of the Qatar 2022 World Cup group stages, it's time for Group B - the one that we're all showing up to watch anyway.

Prospects: Group B may not be a traditional "Group of Death," but it is an extremely competitive group nonetheless. Gareth Southgate's England, semi-finalists in 2018 and Euro 2020 finalists, are the presumptive favorites in this group but there are plenty of banana peels for them along the way. For starters, they begin their campaign against Iran, the Asian confederation's top team in 2021. Then they've got the US on Black Friday. And if they still need something from their final match, they've got Wales just waiting to spoil the party.

One to Watch: Greg Berhalter's US side is full of talented youngsters plying their trade in Europe, but the jewel in the crown might be Claudio Reyna's son Gio.

Most Likely to see Red: Welsh center back Connor Roberts learned his craft at Burnley under the tutelage of one Sean Dyche.

Most Likely to Attempt a "Panenka:" Iranian striker Medhi Terami has previous.

Worst Haircut in the Group: England's Trent Alexander Arnold has been working a bit too much on the barnet these days.

Key Match: November 25 - England v. US (2pm EST)

Blue Devil's Crystal Ball Says: England and the US' "special relationship" will see them through to the knock-out rounds.

A Final Sunday Doubleheader Before the World Cup

Fulham vs Man United Live Streaming: Fulham vs Manchester United in Premier League at 10 PM - Follow LIVEI

It's the final two matches of the world Cup, starting with the Seagulls vs Villa , which is currently 1-1 early in the second half and concluding with the Cottagers vs United. Qatar 2022 Group A Preview

Okay, LOBers, it's time to get started thinking about the Qatar 2022 World Cup. Let's kick it off by discussing Group A:

Prospects: As the host nation Qatar took up Pot 1 in this group, Group A is by definition the weakest group in the competition. This means that the Oranjemen on The Netherlands should cruise through the group without much breaking of sweat. The main drama in the group then becomes who will be the second side to qualify out of the group. Senegal's Lions of Teranga were knocked out in the group stage in 2018, but are an extremely dangerous on the break with one of the most potent strikers in world football Sadio Mane. Ecuador had a rocky and scandal ridden ride to the tournament, qualifying fourth out on Conmebol and having fielded an ineligible player. Finally, the less said about Qatar the better - they bought their way into this tournament and they'll likely lose all three matches.

One to Watch: PSV Eindhoven winger Cody Gakpo was on Leeds' radar this summer and now has a chance to put himself in the shop window for the big clubs in the January transfer window.

Most Likely to see Red: Qatari skipper Hassan al-Haydos will have his hands a bit too full.

Most Likely to Attempt a "Panenka:" Ecuador's Moises Caicedo has learned the wrong lessons at Brighton.

Worst Haircut in the Group: Uruguayan-born Qatar striker Sebastian Soria is a big fan of the Alice band.

Key Match: November 21 - Netherlands v. Senegal (11am EST)

Blue Devil's Crystal Ball Says: The future is bright, the future is Orange.

The Last Weekend

Morning, chaps! We've got an interesting weekend of footer ahead of us, with the last league fixtures before an extended break for an absurdly scheduled World Cup in Qatar. It all starts with an early offering of Man Citeh against Brentford. Without Haaland to watch, I have to say that Citeh are as boring as they were last season and the season before, eking out professional wins through possession and KDB free kicks. I'm hoping he'll be back in the morning.

At 10am, we've got the usual fleet of traditionally scheduled matches, including Liverpool v. Southampton on USA and my beloved Leeds away to Spurs on The Cock.

Join me for all the usual chat, won't you?

Who's Up for the League Cup?

Afternoon, chaps - it's Carabao Cup Third Round time. The round kicked off yesterday with several matches. But it hits the stratosphere today with several tasty fixtures, including the marquee match-up between Man Citeh and Chelsea and my beloved Leeds traveling to Molineux to meet up with Wolves. We should be buoyed by two late wins on the trot and I hope that Jesse Marsch will reward the kids who got us those with some starts today.

I'll be racing home from a boring department meeting to catch the action today. Join me?

Sunday's Best

We've got a footie feast on offer today. It all starts early doors at 7am with a cracking London Derby between Arsenal and Chelsea. The Gunners will want to keep up their winning ways to stay on top. That's followed up by a cluster of matches at 9am, including Villa v. United. Finally, the late one is Spurs v. Liverpool.

Bring on the matches!

Saturday, November 05, 2022

Thank Goodness It's Saturday

After a long workweek, I'm looking forward to settling in for some of the good stuff. The early matches are all in the FA Cup 2nd Round and the Football League, so the Premier League matches don't get started until 11am because of the six-hour time difference between us and Blighty. The USA match is Man Citeh v. Fulham, but I'll be watching my beloved Leeds against Bournemouth on Peacock. The late match on NBC at 1:30pm is Everton v. Leicester.

Join me, won't you?
