Russia 2018 Round of 16 Game 2

So, here we go for game # 2. It will take a lot to improve on the first game of the day.
Will it be Suarez vs Ronaldo? Can Ronaldo get the better of the defenders that play across the city of Madrid.

Russia 2018 - The Knock Out Rounds Begin!

Wahay! We've reached my favorite part of every World Cup - the knock-out rounds. Over the next four days, we'll be able to enjoy eight do-or-die matches between some of the biggest sides in the world. We start this morning with a real cracker - France v. Argentina. Both of these sides have a tendency to bore and if this were a Group Stage match, it might end in snoozes. But this morning, someone has to win and someone has to go home.

Later in the day, we've got an equally intriguing match-up - Portugal v. Uruguay. It's Cristiano Ronaldo v. Luis Suarez. It doesn't get any better than that. We couldn't have a better occasion for the first day of the LOB Reunion. So let's be hearing ya on the blog today.

Russia 2018 Predictions Game - Group Stage Update 3

Morning, chaps. Now that the dust has settled from the final matches in the Group Stage yesterday, it's high time to check in again with our Russia 2018 Predictions Game. Predictably, the last round of matches allowed some of the bigger teams (e.g., Spain, Argentina, Brazil) who had underperformed in the first two rounds of matches to reassert themselves in their groups. That means that the point scores have risen markedly. The two groups where most of us lost a lot of points, however, were Group F, where Germany were shockingly eliminated, and Group H, where none of us who anything about the teams.

No one has yet claimed the Red Card point, so that's still up for grabs. Three of us are gaining 8 points for Harry Kane's 5 goal tally at the top of the Golden Boot heap. So, now we enter the Round of 16, where you'll get three points for each team that goes through. You can also earn a couple of points for correctly predicting the first match to go to penalty kicks.

So here are the current standings:

1. Blue Devil - 45 points
2. Red Dragon - 40 pts
3. Man United Rules - 39 pts
4. Someone Said - 38 pts
5. Red Devil 1FCK - 37 pts
-  The Saint - 37 pts
-  Swansong - 37 pts
8. The Bee's Knees - 36 pts
9. West Ham Rising - 32 pts
10. United We Stand - 30 pts
11. Gooner71 - 27 pts

ENGLAND HAVE DONE IT!! IN THE LAST MINUTE OF EXTRA TIME!

The iconic David Platt goal beat the Belgians the last time they met in the World Cup in 1990. The only previous World Cup meeting was a 4-4 draw in 1954!!! I'll take either one of those results today! The  big question about this match is who will be in first spot... who will want to finish first? Group winner take on Japan BUT then probably Brazil/Mexio. Group Runner-Up will take on Colombia but then have Switzerland/Sweden
Oh what to do? I guess go out and win.. I am wearing one of my England shirts because either way... ENGLAND ARE THRU!!

Russia 2018 Day 15!.... Part 1

So, we are almost done with the group stages. FIFA have stopped following the alphabet for the last two days. Group F went before Group E and today Group H goes before Group G. This thread is concentrating on Group H. One of the favorites for the group, Poland, have already got their tickets set and are just waiting for the 24 hr point to check in. The rest of the group is wide open. Japan are on top as they take on the soon to be Poles. The second match could be interesting. Both teams can go thru but Senegal have their noses in front. One of the two that come out of the group of course take on England.... Who will England have?

Russia 2018 - Day 14!

Morning, chaps! We've reached the two-week milestone of this World Cup today. We're also moving on to the side of the bracket that UWS (and others) have marked out as the weaker of the two and the one that we want England to stay on. First up this morning is Group F, with Germany - despite its last gasp win at the weekend - with a lot to do. Three sides - Mexico and Sweden along with the Germans - are still this one, so it should be a thrill ride.

This afternoon, we've got Group E. Like Germany, Brazil have been underwhelming, only securing a win in stoppage time against Costa Rica. As with Group F, there are still several permutations for this one. I'm taking the day off work to enjoy the proceedings with you lot, so join me for the day. Cheers!

Russia 2018 Day 13!...lucky for some

Group C and D finish up to day with a lot to play for. We begin with top two in C playing each other. A draw would suit them just fine. Australia need a French win and a win for themselves to have hope.
Group D should be fun. Can Argentina somehow get out the group? They have been useless but can still qualify with a win and Iceland falling to one of the teams that are playing well... Croatia. Can the Croats go all the way?

Russia 2018 - Day 12!

A very good Monday morning, chaps. We've reached the final round of group stage matches. We start with Group A this morning. All eyes will be on the hosts Russia v. Uruguay, as both the Saudis and Egypt have been eliminated in the earlier rounds of matches. These sides are likely to face Portugal and Spain in the Round of 16, so it's a bit academic which one tops the group. Regardless, they'll have a tough knock-out round match-up. Those matches start at 10am EST.

After the extended lunch break, we've got the Group B matches. Iran, who play Portugal today, are still in this one, after their opening victory over Morocco, who have been eliminated. Spain play Morocco and will want to continue their good form, which sees them joint top with Portugal. Most odds makers are predicting that the Iberian duo will move on, but who will top the group? Those matches start at 2pm EST.

Join me today for these crucial matches!

Russia 2018 Predictions Game - Group Stage Update 2

With Colombia's crushing victory over Poland this afternoon, we came to the end of the second round of Group Stage matches. That means that it's time to take stock of our Russia 2018 Game again. The big news is that many of the traditional powers - especially Argentina, Brazil and Germany - have struggled to find any kind of form in this tournament. That means that there are quite of few surprises in this Predictions Game. Still, there are plenty of points around, especially for those of us who were prescient enough to predict that England and Harry Kane would do well this month (three of us are picking up 8 points for Kane being on top of the scoring charts now with 5 goals).

As before, it's two points for each correct prediction of the top two teams in the group, with an extra point for the correct order. I'm still waiting to see if one of the players predicted to receive a red card in our pool will see his marching orders. Otherwise, here are the current standings:

1. Blue Devil - 37 points
2. Red Dragon - 33 pts
3. The Bee's Knees - 32 pts
-  Someone Said - 32 pts
5. Man United Rules - 31 pts
6. Red Devil 1FCK - 30 pts
7. Swansong - 28 pts
8. The Saint - 27 pts
9. West Ham Rising - 26 pts
10. Gooner71 - 23 pts
11. United We Stand - 22 pts

COME O ENGURLUND!!!!

HERE WE GO!!! England take on Panama where a win is must!! I know a draw would almost get it done but just win and make the knockout stages!! Enough said!
Group H also ends up today, the two favorites are taking on each other

Russia 2018 Predictions Game - Group Stage Update 1

With Senegal's 2-1 win over Poland this afternoon, the first round of Russia 2018 Group Stage matches came to an end, so it's high time to check in on our Russia 2018 Predictions Game. (That is, I'm not counting in this update Russia's 3-1 win over Egypt this evening). It's been an opening week of lots of thrills and spills, great goals and upsets. For example, none of us predicted Germany being out of the top two teams in Group F! Of course, it's early days, so I won't be calling the engraver quite yet. But it's nice to see the Blue Devil on top of the pops this evening, even if I know it won't last.

In terms of scoring, it's two points for each of the top two teams in each group plus an extra point for the correct order. Beyond that, I no one guessed that Yuri Gazinsky would open the scoring in this tournament (or that he'd be level with Ronaldo as the Golden Boot!, as I type!). I did assign one point to The Bee's Knees for his prediction of Artem Dzyuba, as Dzyuba scored the third of five goals for Russia in that slaughter of Saudi Arabia. No one guessed that it would be Carlos Sanchez who would be the first (and sole so far) player sent off at Russia 2018. I'll also award a point for the first player to get his marching orders in the pool. Finally, and most shockingly, none one predicted that Cristiano Ronaldo would be the Golden Boot, but it is Ronaldo who is currently the top scorer after the first round thanks to his splendid hat-trick against Spain.

So, here are the standings:

1. Blue Devil - 29 points
2. The Bee's Knees - 27 pts
-  Man United Rules 27 pts
4. Swansong - 26 pts
5. Red Devil 1FCK - 25 pts
-  Red Dragon - 25 pts
7. The Saint - 24 pts
8. Someone Said - 22 pts
-  United We Stand - 22 pts
10. Gooner71 - 21 pts
11. West Ham Rising - 19 pts

Russia 2018 - Day 6

I'm waking up with a sense of relief this morning, with the understanding that England have started this World Cup campaign with a win for the first time in my memory. Our celebration of the World Cup is now well and truly on. Today, we're rounding off the groups, with Group H up this morning. First up is Colombia v. Japan. Later we've got Poland and Senegal. And then it all starts again with the hosts facing Egypt in their second match. Join me, won't you?

Russia 2018 - Day 3!

Morning, chaps! Welcome to the longest day of Russia 2018. We start out in a few minutes with France v. Australia. Didier Deschamps' side is one of the most heavily favored teams in the tournament. Will they get off to a solid start. That's followed by another perennial favorite Argentina, who will kick off their campaign against the upstart Iceland side. Peru v. Denmark is one for the purists only and might be my nap time today. Finally, we end up with Croatia v. Nigeria, an intriguing Group D match-up. Join me for all the action, won't you?

Russia 2018 Preview - Group H

Phew! We've reached the end of the Russia 2018 groups, LOBers. I'll be honest - Group H is the least interesting group of the lot. Indeed, I may choose to do some gardening or painting in the basement while these matches are on. The only real interest here is that two of these sides are England's potential Round of 16 rivals.

Poland - Thanks to the prolific goal-scoring record of one Robert Lewandowski, Poland eased their way through a qualifying group that contained Denmark (who finished second), Montenegro and Romania. That said, Poland rival Russia for weakest seed in the tournament. Manager Adam Nawalka has no shortage of proven talent at his disposal; however, the side does have the feel of an cohort that's a bit past their sell-buy date. A good opening win against Senegal might set the tone for a reasonable campaign; however, getting out of this group would seem like the most that the Poles can hope for this time around.

Senegal - The Indomitable Lions were unbeaten in African qualifying for Russia 2018, but not without controversy. Senegal's defeat against South Africa was overturned after the referee was banned for life by FIFA for "match manipulation." Senegal will have a load of Scouse fans this summer, as their established star and team leader is Liverpool striker Sadio Mane, who ripped it up for the Lions in qualifying. Intriguingly, their entire midfield cohort, including skipper and Happy Hammer Cheik Kouyate, plays in England. As such, Senegal are perhaps the strongest of the African sides at Russia 2018. They'll be there or there abouts on the final day of group matches.

Colombia - Jose Pekerman's Colombian side just sneaked into the last qualification spot on that chaotic October night of final qualification matches last fall. The question is whether they'll be able to achieve the heights that they did last time around when they reached the 2014 quarterfinal stage and James Rodriguez was the break-out star of the tournament, earning him a big money move to Spain. The form of striker Radamel Falcao, who has battled injury over the years, will be key this time around. He has been rejuvenated at Monaco and looks set to tear up a weaker group like this one. He'll look to fill his boots against Japan in the opener.

Japan - Japan's presence in big tournaments is, by now, almost a given. Yet, they tend to wilt once they get there, with only two Round of 16 appearances, including one at home in 2002, to show for their efforts. They did well in qualifying, besting a group that contained both Saudi Arabia, who came second, and Australia, who were forced to qualify through a playoff. The Blue Samurai have a few recognizable names for those who follow the Champions League, most notably Dortmund midfielder Shinji Kagawa. However, given that there top scorer, Shinji Okazaki, often comes off the bench for Leicester, one can understand the lack of quality in a squad full of players who grace the pitches for the likes of Kashima Antlers on the weekends. I'm afraid that this is not Japan's year.

Predictions - This is a tight one between Poland, Senegal, and Colombia, with Japan almost certain to be at the bottom of the group. I'll take a stab at it and say Colombia to top the group, Senegal to place and Poland to get edged out. But this one is likely to only be sorted out on the last day of the group stage. My tip is, skip the first matches in this group and tune in on Thursday, June 28 for the finale.

Russia 2018 Preview - Group G

Morning, chaps - we've finally reached that group, the one that includes the promise of English glory...or devastation - Group G:

Belgium - The vagaries of FIFA rankings produced Belgium, a side that has never won any major honors, as the seeded nation in this group instead of one, England, that, ahem, actually has. No matter, Belgium it is at the top of this group and, as they have for several cycles now, the Red Devils offer a roster full of exciting young talent that has yet shown its full potential at this level. Belgium was one of the first nations to book its place to Russia, sailing through its weak qualifying group dropping only two points along the way. On paper, Roberto Martinez's side has the full package: a tight defense in front a classy goalkeeper in Thibault Courtois, a talented and creative midfield with standouts such as Manchester City's Kevin de Bruyne and Chelsea's Eden Hazard, and a potent front line led by Manchester United's Romelu Lukaku. What could possibly go wrong? Well, as we've seen at previous tournaments, Belgium somehow fail to impress on the highest stage. Will this be the time that Belgium's Golden Generation finally shines?

Panama - Few teams had a more dramatic road to Russia than did Panama, qualifying out of CONCACAF on the very last day of qualifying due to Roman Torres' disputed headed goal against Costa Rica, which knocked out the U.S. No other team will be as unfamiliar to international audiences as will Panama, which has a squad largely drawn from Major League Soccer. Torres, a line-backer sized Seattle Sounders defender, is the star of the side. Merely having a place at the party for the first time in its history will be enough for the Canal Men.

Tunisia - Tunisia come to Russia 2018 as another relatively unfamiliar force, with most of its squad playing domestically or for second-tier European clubs. Like Panama, they'll likely line up defensively, especially against Belgium and England, with Marseille defender Aymen Abdenour at the center of operations. Midfielder Wahbi Khazri is another one to watch - he makes Tunisia tick. It's unlikely the Tunisia will progress at the expense of their stronger European group mates; however, if they do, they'll need to keep it tight in their first two matches and then hope for a big win against Panama.

England - Oh, England, my Lionheart - what do you have in store for me this summer? The excitement of a 1990 campaign or the despair of the 2014 campaign? Like Belgium, England have a strong side full of players with Premier League and Champions League experience. Indeed, that clash on June 28 is will probably feel like a Spurs v. Chelsea match. Spurs striker Harry Kane has scored 30 goals in three consecutive club seasons, so he must have a shout for Golden Boot this summer. And he'll have ample support from his club-mate Dele Alli. England have to their advantage a youthful squad that perhaps won't feel the weight of expectations that previous generations have. An easy group and Round of 16 match-up should see them through to the Quarters where they'll meet either Brazil or Germany. But isn't that precisely the kind of match that all England fans want to see in mid July?

Predictions - England to top the group after a thrilling goal-filled group stage, Belgium to place. Panama and Tunisia are frankly quite rubbish. Who cares about them? Okay, I am a dreamer.

Russia 2018 Preview - Group F

A very good Sunday morning, LOBers - I'm back to profile what is surely Russia 2018's "Group of Death." Group F:

Germany - Group F is presided over by the current World Champions Germany. Joachim Loew's side are once again presumptive favorites. And yet, one only has to look at what happened to 2010 winners Spain in a similar group in 2014 to understand the peril that faces Germany in this group. Ease up a tiny bit or have a slow start and there are easily two other teams that could send Germany home early. Loew has raised eyebrows by continuing with out of form stars such as Thomas Mueller over younger options such as Manchester City's Leroy Sane, who has been left out of the squad. Still, it's Germany, eh? Surely, even if they're not firing on all cylinders, they have the tournament mentality to make it out of this group.

Mexico - After years of jockeying for superiority in CONCACAF with the U.S., Mexico established their stamp on the qualifying earlier on this cycle. Juan Carlos Osorio has also chosen to go with experience, recalling the likes of 39 year-old Rafael Marquez for a fourth World Cup. On paper, Mexico don't look that impressive, with several of their starters (e.g., Carlos Vela, Gio Dos Santos) plying their trade in the MLS. However, there is something about pulling on the Mexican colors that transforms players such as Javier "Chicarito" Hernandez, who looks distinctly ordinary leading the line for West Ham but has a 1 in 2 strike rate for El Tri. All of this means that Mexico will be competitive in this group.

Sweden - Sweden are in Russia this summer because they knocked out to big European powers in qualifying, first edging out the Netherlands in Group A - UEFA's "Group of Death" this time around, and then shockingly beating Italy over two playoff legs in November. For the last decade, Sweden have been dominated by the outsized personality of one Zlatan Ibrahimovic. So who are they now that Zlatan has hung up his international boots? Certainly less swashbuckling and spectacular. However, without the shackle of having to play to the whims of their superstar striker, Janne Anderson's side may be a bit more cohesive. They've got both experience in the guise of co-captains Anders Granqvist and Sebby Larsson, as well as some youth. Their opener with South Korea will be telling.

South Korea - South Korea come to Russia 2018 having qualifying second to Iran in their group. That record would seemingly make the Koreans the least favored team in this group. However, they should be underestimated at everyone's peril. As always, this South Korean team contains 7 or 8 players you've never heard of who will run all day and then some, along with 2 or 3 ringers such as Tottenham's Son Heung-Min and Augsburg schemer Koo Ja-Cheoi who are the match-winners. All of that means that Korea are more than capable of causing a shock in this group.

Predictions - It's very difficult to handicap this group, but here it is: Germany to top the group after a scare or two. Mexico to edge out both Sweden and South Korea but only just. That's a guess but who would bet against Germany placing second and setting up a titanic Round of 16 clash between Brazil and Germany? Wow!

Russia 2018 Preview - Group E

Happy weekend, LOBers. I'm back with another Russia 2018. This morning, it's Group E, which is lorded over by five-time champions Brazil.

Brazil - The Boys from Brazil enter this tournament full of confidence but with nightmare memories of that semi-final match in 2014 against Germany during which Der Mannschaft handed them their lunch in front of a home crowd at the Maracana. Manager Tite has a wealth of talent from which to choose, including a dream forward line of Neymar, Gabriel Jesus, Douglas Costa, Roberto Firmino, Willian and Philippe Coutinho. While jogo bonito aficionados like me would play them all, Tite is much more likely to play it safe with two destroyers such as Fernandinho and Paulinho across the middle and five across the back. The group stage will be no challenge at all for them, as the Swiss, Ticos and Serbs will be swept aside. They're eyes will be toward the knockout and avoiding another potential embarrassment.

Switzerland - Vladimir Petkovic's plucky Swiss side placed second behind Portugal in Group B of European qualifying for Russia 2018, which set them up with a relatively easy play-off match-up with Northern Ireland. As always, the Swiss are a side full of players who ply their trade in Europe, albeit at the second tier; however, they are riven with ethnic squabbles between French, German and Italian speakers (and even imports from Central Europe such as Granit Xhaka) in the camp. They'll likely be turned over good and proper in the opener against group favorites Brazil. They key will be getting results against the other sides. Do that and the Swiss will be around and about.

Costa Rica - The Ticos were impressive in CONCACAF qualifying, finishing second behind confederation powers Mexico and pushing the US toward oblivion. Oscar Ramirez lines up his side around his strengths in defense and midfield in front of Real goalkeeper Keylor Navas, their one real star in the side. As they showed against England the other day, they'll likely drop deep and try to hit sides on the break through former Arsenal starlet Joel Campbell and veteran striker Bryan Ruiz. The opener against Serbia will set the tone for the campaign. Get a quick start and the Ticos could replicate their 2014 success.

Serbia - The Central Europeans had an impressive qualifying campaign in UEFA Group D, topping the group ahead of the Republic of Ireland and Wales. Manager Mladen Krstaijic has a well-seasoned squad, many of whom play in the Premiership, at his disposal. The spine of the side run through skipper Alexander Kolarov, former Chelsea defender Branisalov Ivanovic, Manchester United schemer Nemanja Matic, Southampton's player Dusan Tadic and Newcastle striker Alexander Mitrovic. Don't expect them to be pretty; however, in a weaker group, they should just about have the nous to get out of the group.

Predictions - Brazil to sail through the group, racking up nine points and loads of goals. Serbia to emerge second, setting themselves up for a Round of 16 clash against Germany. Costa Rica edged into third and Switzerland as one of the least interesting and/or impressive sides at Russia 2018.

England Play Costa Rica on Hallowed Ground

England play their final World Cup warm-up match against Costa Rica on the hallowed turf of Elland Road this evening. The England Brass Band have made it; will Gareth Southgate and the boys show up as well? Join me from 3pm EST onward to find out.

Russia 2018 Preview - Group D

Morning, LOBers - with Group D today, we've reached the half-way point of these previews. This group is dominated by two-time World Cup holders Argentina.

Argentina - The Albicelestes had the scare of their lives in CONMEBOL qualifying, having to wait for a 1-3 win away to Ecuador on the last day of qualifying to secure the third automatic spot for Russia 2018. Still, Jorge Sampaoli has quality from back to front from which to choose, including the talismanic figure of Leo Messi. At 30, this is the last chance for Messi to leave his mark on the World Cup. Any slip-ups or slow starts against a relatively manageable group will leave Argentina with the unappetizing prospect of a Round of 16 clash with France.

Iceland - The Icelanders were the surprise package of Euro 2016, reaching the quarterfinal stage at the expense of England. Now, they're back after topping Group I ahead of their Russia 2018 group-mates Croatia. Expectations for Heimir Hallgrimsson's side are thus sky-high in Reykjavik. But will lightening strike twice? It's hard to see that. Iceland are a tight-knit bunch but that will only take them so far in this group. They'll need to keep it close against Argentina in the opener and then build on that.

Croatia - The perennial qualifiers in the modern-age had a spotty qualifying campaign in Group I, having to rely on a drab play-off victory over Greece to secure their spot. This is the final shot at something big for this generation, surely the most talented cohort since the third-place side in 1998. Their strength is in midfield, with Barca's Ivan Rakitic anchoring the side and Real's Luka Modric offering the killer passes to big Juve striker Mario Mandzukic. The opener against Nigeria will set the tone for their campaign. Win big and they may be off to the races again.

Nigeria - As was seen against England at the weekend, Gernot Rohr's Super Eagles are a schizophrenic lot. They can be woeful, as they were in the first half, or they can look handy, as they did in the second half. Unfortunately, when one is playing at the highest level, switching off for 45 minutes can be deadly. Their campaign will largely rely on the scoring form of their two English-based youngsters up front, Alex Iwobi and Kelechi Iheanacho; however, it is Chelsea's Victor Moses that really makes this team hum. They'll need a good start against Croatia to go far in this group.

Predictions - Argentina to coast through this group with consummate ease, given their tournament pedigree; Nigeria and Croatia to jockey for second spot, with Croatian experience winning out. Iceland to be every fan's favorite second team, before bowing out gloriously.

Russia 2018 Preview - Group C

Okay, LOBers, it's time to chat about Group C, then, a group that would seem on paper to be dominated by former World Cup winners France, who will face three sides who are only in Russia thanks to play-off victories.

France - Les Bleus enter Russia 2018 as one of the presumptive favorites, based largely on the (arguably overinflated) reputations of their stars. "Look at their front line!" many pundits say - and it's true that Antoine Griezmann, Olivier Giroud and Kylian Mbappe would walk into many nation's starting XIs. Add that to a squad full of players with Champions League experience, and France would surely have a chance. They start in a group that will represent very little challenge in the initial stages. However, I'm nagged with the feeling that Didier Deschamps may line them up in a conservative manner, which might mean a somewhat slow start. Any slip-ups could mean disaster in the form of a Round of 16 match-up with Argentina.

Australia - Manager Bert van Marwijck will have very modest expectations for the Socceroos this time around, having only qualified for Russia 2018 through a play-off win over Honduras in November. That Tim Cahill, who, at 38, is the oldest out-field player in the tournament, still leads the line says all you need to know about the lack of quality in the side. Watching Australia this summer will be very reminiscent of watching an English Football League match, organized around a rugged defense and midfield phalanx around Villa midfielder and Aussie skipper Mille Jedinak.

Peru - Peru were one of the surprise packages coming out of CONMEBOL qualifying in the fall, arriving at only their fourth Finals appearance by edging out Chile for fifth spot, which allowed them an easy playoff match with New Zealand. Peru will be fascinating to watch this summer, as they're almost entirely unfamiliar to most watchers of European football given that virtually all of their squad members play their club football in Latin America. They're opener against their main rivals in the group, Denmark, will be telling. Win that one and they have a chance of getting out of the group and meeting their South American cousins Argentina in the Round of 16.

Denmark - Age Hareide's Danish Dynamite are the third side in this group who gained qualification through the play-off system, having finished second in UEFA Group E behind Poland and then defeating the Republic of Ireland over two legs. The side has a few quality players with Champions League experience (Sevilla central defender and skipper Simon Kjaer and Chelsea's Thomas Christiansen, for example), but what really makes them tick is Tottenham's playmaker Christian Erickson. He'll have to be at his best in feeding some rather ordinary Ligue 1 and Eredivisie stars up front if they're to trouble France's galacticos. More realistically, they'll see off Peru in order to qualify for the knock-out rounds second in the group.

Predictions - Hard to see France bollixing this one up; they'll finish top, Denmark to place...just; Peru just edged out and the Aussies just happy to be at the party this summer.

Russia 2018 Preview - Group B

Right then, chaps - on to Group B. This group is obviously dominated by the Iberian rivalry between Spain and Portugal, with Morocco and Iran making up the numbers.

Spain - After a humiliating group stage exit at Brasil 2014 and being knocked out by Italy at Euro 2016, Spanish optimism is up again, largely due to topping a competitive qualifying group that included Italy (who won't be at Russia 2018 as a consequence). The 3-0 win over the Azurri perhaps provides a blueprint for handling the big sides in the knock-out stages this summer. Like a lot of the traditional powers at Russia 2018, Spain have an extremely experienced (or long in tooth) side, including veterans from the 2010 victory (Ramos, Pique, Busquets and Iniesta). Diego Costa, everyone's favorite cartoon is back in the fold and is likely to spearhead the attack solo, edging out Chelsea's Alvaro Morata. Spain will likely grind out a boring draw against their neighbors in the opener and then coast through the other matches. Topping the group would give them a marquee Round of 16 match-up with hosts Russia.

Portugal - As they proved at Euro 2016, the reigning European Champions should not be easily dismissed. However, the old adage of "as Ronaldo goes, so goes Portugal" still applies this summer. That's not to say that Fernando Santos doesn't have some capable lieutenants to call on, including Manchester City's Bernardo Silva and Monaco schemer Joao Moutinho. However, the reality that crusty defender Bruno Alves is the second leading scoring in the squad with 12 goals behind Ronaldo (with 83) tells you all you need to know. If he stays fit, they'll see off Iran and Morocco with ease after the opening weekend snoozefest. However, that will likely bring up a tricky Round of 16 fixture with Uruguay.

Morocco - After an impressive qualifying campaign, Morocco fans were hopeful of reaching the second round for only the second time in their history (the other time was in 1986). However, a tricky draw putting them into a group with a recent World Cup winner and the current European Champions has dampened that enthusiasm. Manager Herve Renard will need to use every bit of wiliness he has earned over his long career in management. Morocco are a fairly defensive outfit, organized around skipper and Juve central defender Medhi Benatia, and will likely park the bus against the big sides. If they can beat Iran and grind out a draw or two against Spain or Portugal, they might score an upset. However, the smart money is on a group stage exit.

Iran - Iran will just be happy to be involved in the second consecutive World Cup for the first time in its history. It's major asset in the group stage will be veteran Portuguese manager Carlos Queiroz, who will certainly know a thing or two about frustrating Spain and Portugal. Iran will likely play on the break, particularly against the big boys, trying to strike through in-form strikers Alireza Jahanbakhsh (the top scorer in Holland this year) and Karim Ansarifard. It would be fun to see them achieve an upset, but it's highly unlikely. The opener against Morocco will set the tone for them.

Prediction - Spain to top the group, with a draw against Portugal and two wins against the others; Portugal to just get out of the group with some Ronaldo inspired heroics in the final match; Morocco just edged out and Iran on the bottom.

I'd love to hear what you make of this group - let's be having ya!

Russia 2018 Preview - Group A

Hi there LOBers! In order to assist you in your prediction-making for our Russia 2018 Predictions Game, I'm starting a series of threads this week that will preview the various groups. Let's get started with Group A. As with many of the groups this summer, I'm a bit underwhelmed by this lot.

Russia - Russia enter the 2018 World Cup, a showpiece for the Putin regime, as one of the weaker host nations in recent history, on par with the likes of the US in 1994 or South Africa in 2010. Russia have failed to get out of the group during their three other appearances at the World Cup Finals; however, this may be their best chance to do so and surely a group stage exit would mean an arsenic-laced bowl of soup for manager Stanislav Cherchesov. It's an aging squad built around the CSKA and Zenit boys Igor Akinfeev, Igor Smolnikov, Yuri Zherkov and Alexsandr Samdemov, who are all the wrong side of 30. Best hope for goals is Krasdonar striker Fyodor Smolov.

Saudi Arabia - The Saudis are an unsettled bunch at the moment having burned through two managers since achieving qualification by placing second in Group B in the Asian confederation qualifying ahead of the Aussies. In four previous trips to the finals, the Saudis have only made it out of the group once (at USA 1994) and they'll likely struggle to get out of the group this time around. Much of the Saudi's hopes will rest on the shoulders of striker Mohammad Al-Sahlawi who has an impressive strike record of nearly a goal a game when playing for the national side.

Egypt - Let's be honest now. Egypt's chances in Russia this summer were blown up by Real Madrid's master of the dark arts Sergio Ramos when he locked arms with Mo Salah, dislocating his shoulder in the process. Without him, Hector Cuper's team is distinctly ordinary. Watching Egypt this summer will be reminiscent of watching an English league match, though as Arsenal's Mohammad Elneny, Villa's Ahmed Elmohemedy, Wigan's Sam Morsy, and Stoke's Ramadan Sobhi are all likely to feature.

Uruguay - Last time around, Uruguay were tossed into the Group of Death alongside England and Italy, so they'll be breathing a sigh of relief about their draw this summer. After finishing second in CONMEBOL qualifying for Russia 2018, Uruguay must fancy their chances. Getting out of this duff group should be a doddle for Biter Suarez and co. Uruguay as always are a team of two sides, rugged at the back but entertaining up front with Suarez and Edinson Cavani leading the line. They are getting on a bit, though. A win in this group would pair them up against likely Portugal in the Round of 16. Who wouldn't want to see Suarez sink his choppers into Ronaldo's thigh, eh?

Prediction - Uruguay to top the group, perhaps with three wins on the trot. Russia to place, just. The solid but unspectacular Saudis to be edged out and Egypt for the sad spectacle of being knocked out when Salah's presence could have meant so much more.
