Lakenheath Old Boys

We are all former students at Lakenheath High School and other public schools in East Anglia. We were in school in the 70s and 80s and drank deeply from the well of British culture of those decades - the pints, the telly, and of course the footie!

Chelsea vs. Liverpool Live!

The perennial rivals Chelski and Costa Del Pool return to Stamford Bridge for what seems like the umpteenth time they've played this season. Chelski certainly have the upper-hand after that spectacular John Arne Riise that ended last week's first leg. Who will advance to the first ever all-English Champion's League final? Join me to find out!

Happy Birthday LOB!

It's the second anniversary of Lakenheath Old Boys today. The idea for a blog first came to me as a whim as I was recovering from surgery and looking forward to the World Cup in Germany that summer.

Two years on, I'm looking back on a lot of fun banter with you lads and looking forward to more of the same in the future, including this summer's Euro 2008 in Switzerland and Austria.

Thanks to all who've participated - and spread the word!

Manchester United vs. Barcelona Live!

I'm stuck in the office this afternoon, but that doesn't mean I won't be glued to the proceedings at Old Trafford. It's the second leg of the Champions League semi final, it's delicately poised at 0-0, so join me if you're watching.

Why I Can't Vote for Obama

I know it will raise the hackles of the Obamamaniacs on this blog but I just can't stomach voting for Obama in the fall. And it's not because of some ridiculous distraction such as whether or not he wears a flag lapel pin or his choice of church. No, it's always been his position on the issues. Take a look at this clip from his appearance on Fox News Sunday today. If the Dems showed us the respect of nominating even a mainstream FDR Democrat, I might consider voting for them. But a neo-liberal who attacks "the teachers' union" (there are actually two), wants to "experiment with charter schools" despite the research showing the poor results of charters and wants to ram merit pay down our throats? No thanks! I'll be voting to the left this fall.

Bjork's Wanderlust

You owe it to yourself to submit to the most surreal 5-6 minutes of film for quite a long time. Even with the sound off, it's weird.

Footie Trivia Question of the Week

David Beckham recently earned his 100th cap for England, so I thought it was high time for this question:

"David Beckham made his debut for England in a fall 1996 3-0 win over Moldova in 1998 WC qualifying. How many of his ten teammates that day can you name? Who was the skipper? And who was the manager that day?

Good luck, lads!

Our favorite American Idol, Jason Castro, took on the immortal Andrew Lloyd Webber tune "Memories" from the musical "Cats" this week.

Pennsylvania!

After a grueling six-week campaign in the Keystone State, it's all finally coming to an end tonight. Or is it? All the pundits are suggesting that an Obama win tonight would be Hillary's Waterloo. But I'm predicting a single-digit win for Clinton (5-10% probably), which means they go on to North Carolina and Indiana and....

Please make it go away!

Does Roon Have a Charmed Life?

The main question that came out of the weekend was not whether ManYoo or Chelski will win the the Championship, but how on earth Wayne Rooney stayed on the pitch. Lunging tackles, screaming at Rob Styles, kicking the ball away - all that was missing was a kung fu kick.

Sky pundit Robbie Earle was on WSD today admitting that any other player in England would have got his marching orders.

Your thoughts, gents?

Soccer Saturday

Another Saturday, another footie day. It may seem as if the season is already sorted but there is plenty of interest left in several leagues. Are ManYoo home and dry? Is Fulham sunk? Will Leeds improve their case for the tribunal?

Join me to find the answers.

Footie Trivia of the Week

This one's relevant and dead easy.

"Which is the only club to have been relegated from the Premiership four times?"

Good luck, lads!

Will Justice Be Served?

It's a crucial day for all Leeds fans as the club goes before an independent tribunal in its efforts to get the fifteen point deduction levied against the club at the beginning of the season overturned. Millwall have called for a delay in the tribunal, all the other clubs are against, everyone hates us but we don't care.

If we were to get a favorable result today, we'd immediately jump from 67 to 82 points and Swansea's celebrations over the weekend will seem premature.

Will justice be served? We'll see.

How Many of These Have You Read?

Dave found this nifty list of 110 must read books compiled by the good folks at the Telegraph. As canonical projects go, it's not half bad. Have a look and get your summer reading list started.

United vs. Roma - Second Leg!

Manchester United did so much damage in the Olympic Stadium last week, that Sir Alex Ferguson has decided to rest Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo for tonight's second leg clash at Old Trafford. On paper it sounds like a stroll in the park for the Red Devils, but they still have to play the match.

Join me for a chat if you're watching.

The Battle of Britain, Second Leg!

It's round three of the Arse vs. Pool show this week. We've had two 1-1 draws so far but someone has to win tonight. It's advantage Liverpool due to that away goal at the Emirates but the tie is still on a knife's edge. In the other quarter final tonight, Chelski still have plenty to do in their home leg against Fenerbahce, who come to Stamford Bridge with a 2-1 advantage.

TH-14 Coming to Seattle?

The MLS world is abuzz this week with chatter about one Thierry Henry being in "advanced talks" with the (still unnamed) Seattle MLS franchise set to debut in 2009. Why would he want to leave Barca to come to the U.S.? Who knows - maybe he's got a lot of Sunny Day Real Estate tunes on his iPod. Maybe he's dying for a good cup of java. In the end, though, if he comes, he'll be another reason for the Euro-snobs to tune in to the beautiful game as it exists in this country. I'm excited - how about the rest of you?

Time is Ticking Down on the Season

I am here for United' big game at the Riverside and then the second Cup Semi Final.
Boro always seem to do well against the big 'uns at the Riverside.
They have beaten United, Chelski, Arsenal and Liverpool over the last few seasons.
So, obviously, I am a little nervous.
Hope for some company

The Battle of Britain!

It's the tie of the round - the Gunners vs. the Reds. Torres is on fire. The Arsenal showed some steel on Saturday. It's on live from the Emirates on ESPN 2. Are we watching? Oh yes. Yes, we are. I'll look forward to the pleasure of your company this afternoon.

Champions League Quarterfinals

It's Roma vs. United in the Stadio Olympico in Rome. The first leg of the CL quarterfinals. Last year there was an almighty ruck inside the stadium and then United tonked Roma at home. Are we set for a repeat? Are we excited? Oh, yes. Yes, we are. Come on you Reds!
