Lakenheath Old Boys

We are all former students at Lakenheath High School and other public schools in East Anglia. We were in school in the 70s and 80s and drank deeply from the well of British culture of those decades - the pints, the telly, and of course the footie!

New Year's Eve Footie

It's a double header today . I slept through the early match as Citeh's 18 match winning streak was snapped with Palace holding Citeh 0-0. It sounded like am match that was incident filled as Jesus and KDB went off injured for Citeh and Palace missed a last minute penalty.. The lare one is underway as the last placed Baggies host the Gunners , winless in half a dozen matches and with only two goals scored. Will it be seventh time lucky for Pardew and his lads?

Premiership Plus Predictions Game - Week 20 Update

Hiya, lads! I hope that everyone in LOB land is enjoying a relaxing festive period. I'm back before the weekend hurly burly to update all of you on the goings-on with our little game. Not much to report, however. All of the top five slots are the same, as are the bottom three. Villa dropping out of the Championship playoff spots lost three point for some. And most of us continue to profit from Harry Kane's recent back-to-back hat-tricks. He's on 18 and out of sight of the other top goalscorers at the moment.

So, here are the current standings, with MOT the Hoople hanging on to a slim lead:

1. MOT the Hoople - 38 points
2. Gooner71 - 37 pts
3. What's Up Wheaton - 36 pts
4. Swansong - 34 pts
5. The Saint - 29 pts
6. Someone Said - 27 pts
7. Red Devil 1FCK - 26 pts
-  Red Dragon - 26 pts
9. Man Utd Rules - 23 pts
10. West Ham Rising - 20 pts
11. Blue Devil - 18 pts
12. United We Stand - 17 pts
13. Yellows - 14 pts

More Holiday Football : The Toon vs Citeh

I know that they always say that's why they play the games, but really??? AN upset in the making? Who are kidding.? Citeh have won sixteen in a row , breaking all sorts of records . Meanwhile, the Toon are a point above the drop zone, not knowing where the next win is unless Jeff Stelling brings his team around. Seriously, the Toon  and their long suffering and really loyal fans, are on a hiding to nothing unless they play a 10-0-0 formation. Join me if you can.

Hurray for Boxing Day!

Jingle Bells, Sheffield smells, Burton ran away. Oh what it is to see Leeds win on Boxing Day - ay!

Hiya, chaps - I hope that you're enjoying the festive period and are looking forward to the Boxing Day schedule today. The day starts with Spurs v. Southampton at Wembley. Join me for all the fun and games, won't you?

Premiership Plus Predictions Game - Christmas Update!

A very happy Christmas Eve, everyone! I missed out on the footer action yesterday, due to traveling down to Virginia for the holidays. But I thought I'd catch you up on the current standings in our game before Boxing Day. With Citeh winning big again yesterday and United dropping points again, we might as well call the engravers - barring a sudden collapse, Citeh will be champions and Gooner, Swansong and Simon can lock in those 10 points. Swansea will be bottom of the league on Christmas Day, which usually means relegation, so those 3 points are locked in as well for all of us who tipped the Swans to go down. Happily, Leeds are back up into the playoff spots, which helps a few of us. But the big change over the weekend was Harry Kane's hat-trick, which moved him up level with Mo Salah at the top of the goalscoring chart - both have 15 goals in 19 Premier League match, some strike rate!

Here are the current standings, then:

1. MOT the Hoople - 41 pts
2. Gooner71 - 37 points
-   Swansong - 37 pts
4. What's Up Wheaton Simon - 36 pts
5. The Saint- 29 pts
6. Man Utd Rules - 26 pts
-  Red Dragon - 26 pts
-  Someone Said - 26 pts
-  Red Devil 1FCK - 26 pts
10. United We Stand - 20 pts
-  West Ham Rising - 20 pts
12. Blue Devil - 18 pts
13. Yellows - 17 pts

Pre-Christmas Footer

The Christmas period started with a bang yesterday with a 3-3 thriller between Arsenal and Liverpool. We've got a full schedule of Premier League and Championship goodies on offer this morning, starting with Everton v. Chelsea. Unfortunately, I won't be around, as I'm helping out Kate and her family with holiday preparations. But I thought I'd start the thread and get you started. Enjoy the day, lads. I hope to catch up with you tomorrow. Cheers!

Premiership Plus Predictions Game - Week 18 Update

With Everton's 3-1 win over Swansea this evening, Week 18 of the domestic season came to a close. Since last weekend, there has been very little change at the top (Citeh running away with the title, the big clubs safe in those CL spot), but suddenly Newcastle and WBA have slipped into the bottom three alongside Swansea. That didn't change much for our game, though, as Swansea were the only relegation favorites among our pool. Mo Salah didn't score this weekend, but continues to confound the predictors, most of whom predicted that Harry Kane would grab the Golden Boot again this season. Here are the current standings:

1. Gooner71 - 34 points
2. Swansong - 32 pts
3. What's Up Wheaton Simon - 30 pts
4. Someone Said - 23 pts
5. MOT the Hoople - 21 pts
6. Red Devil 1FCK - 20 pts
7. Man Utd Rules - 19 pts
8. Blue Devil - 18 pts
-  Red Dragon - 18 pts
-  The Saint - 18 pts
-  Yellows - 18 pts
12. United We Stand - 17 pts
13. West Ham Rising - 14 pts

Happy Birthday, MUR!

Please join me in wishing our own Manchester United Rules a very happy birthday today. Hope you've had a cracking one, mate!

Sunday Morning Coming Down

The footie gods have allowed me to have a lie-in after some marathon snow shoveling sessions. I may be a bit sore from all of that exertion today, but I'm got a cuppa by my side and WBA v. United to enjoy. Join me for the Premiership action, won't you?

A Footie Respite

Morning, LOBers. I woke up to two feet of fresh snow in the driveway here at the Cottage. So, I sacrificed the Leicester v. Palace match for an early morning shoveling session. I'm back for some brekkies and some of the good stuff. After this early offering, we've got the usual 3pm GMT kickoffs, including Chelsea v. Soton on NBC Sports and Leeds (hopefully) on the ESPN3. The late one is the biggie - Citeh v. Spurs. Join me if you're around today, won't you?

Music of 2017

I grew up in the era of the LP, often buying a new album of the day of its release, breathlessly taking it home and lovingly unwrapping it and reading liner notes while spinning it for the first time. Those days are long over and I had just about given up hope on the full-length album as an art form in the age of mixtape culture; yet, there it was roaring back in 2017 (even in vinyl form!), with many top artists releasing fully-conceived albums (sometimes even doubles!). Is the renaissance of the concept album far behind? In any case, these are the records that were constant companions on my walks over to campus this year:
  1. Childish Gambino - “Awaken, My Love!” I have to admit that I slept on Childish Gambino, naively thinking that it was merely a vanity project for comic actor Donald Glover. But I have to give it to the guy - he has the musical chops to pull it off - and then some. Much of this album sounds like vintage P-funk by way of Sly Stone’s “There’s a Riot Goin’ on.” And “Redbone” is my song of the year - it’s message to all of us to “stay woke” was a mantra for the Trump era.
2. Offa Rex - “The Queen of Hearts” - This adventurous project featuring the Decemberists backing English folk singer Olivia Chaney reminds of those great Fairport Convention albums of the late 60s. Colin Meloy has clearly done his homework but it’s Chaney, who sounds like a reincarnation of the luminous Sandy Denny, who is the star of the show. Every track that she leads - “The Gardener,” for example - sparkles. And their version of “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face” will almost make you forget Roberta Flack’s.
3. The xx - “I See You:” The British electronica band The xx has long caught my attention with their combination of pop smarts and hip beats. “I See You” represents a career high point for them, perhaps a breakthrough given their recent SNL performance. Of course, there is the current single “On Hold,” which shows off the double vocal threat of Romy Madley-Croft and Oliver Sim, which is elevated by Sim’s Cockney delivery - “I fought you were on hold.” But in truth the entire album, including sublime slow-burners such as “Performance” and “The Lips.” The killer pop track is “I Dare You,” a tune of such devastating hooks that it’s mystifying that they stuck it at track nine. No matter - it kills whenever it pops up in the iTunes cue.
4. Lindsey Buckingham and Christine McVie - I have always considered Lindsey Buckingham and Christine McVie to be the creative geniuses behind Fleetwood Mac, so it’s really gratifying to see that the recent Mac reunion shows have spurred this new album. Buckingham and McVie could easily retire to their stately homes in LA and England at this point and never do any recording or touring at this point. Instead, they’ve produced a smart set of pop song craft. The album is expertly programmed, with the two trading vocal leads from one song to the next. McVie’s lead on “Feel About You” and Buckingham’s on “In My World” are the highlights on the album.
5. Alison Krause - “Windy City:” This is such a welcome return for Alison, who has dropped out of the scene since her terrific duet album with Robert Plant from almost ten years ago. Her new solo effort has a classic country and western feel, with tasty covers of Willie Nelson numbers and Glen Campbell’s “Gentle on my Mind.”
6. Chris Thile and Brad Mehldau - Brad Mehldau must be the hardest working man in jazz these days, taking on a variety of projects, from solo concerts to trio work to collaborations with a variety of people. I have to admit that Chris Thile is new to me on this disc - but apparently he’s a hot shot on the bluegrass circuit and is the new host of NPR’s Prairie Home Companion. Together they make some really interesting stuff that merges Mehldau spiky, rock-tinged take on jazz with bluegrass, country and folk. This is a deep listen but an album that I’ll long enjoy.
7. Phoenix - “Ti Amo:” The French band Phoenix make sleek 21st century pop music informed by both rock and EDM. I first heard their new album as it was infused throughout the Diane Lane romantic vehicle “Paris Can Wait.” It was the soundtrack of Lane’s character’s journey through the French countryside. Singer Thomas Mars is a voice for this generation, with a plaintive yelp on tracks such as the title track that is quite affecting. Phoenix are still largely a singles band for me, as they can’t quite sustain my interest over a full album.
8. Shelby Lynne and Allison Moorer - “Not Dark Yet:” I only just found out that Lynne and Moorer are sisters from a review in Rolling Stone. But there is no escaping this fact when one hears the two harmonizing. It’s clear that they’ve been singing together all their lives. Not surprisingly all of the media buzz has been about their cover of Nirvana’s “Lithium,” however, that track is actually an outlier on a very listenable disc of alt country.
9. Randy Newman - “Dark Matters:” A new Randy Newman couldn’t come at a better time for our democracy. His combination of classic American song craft and acerbic lyrics is perfect for the Trump era. Apparently, he left off a piece that he had written about Trump’s penis. However, there is plenty of tart, politically adept material here, especially the comical “Putin.”
Father John Misty - “Pure Comedy:” I much preferred Josh Tillman when he was drumming for Fleet Foxes. His new persona, as “Father John Misty” is a bit too Chateau Marmont, hipster bon vivant for my tastes. But there is no denying his audacious songwriting chops, especially on songs such as “Ballad of the Dying Man.”
Notable Others:
Alt-J - “Relaxer”
Arcade Fire - Everything Now
Fleet Foxes - “Crack-up”
Haim - “Something to Tell You”
Keyon Harrold - “The Mugician”
Valerie June - “The Order of Time”
Diana Krall - “Turn Up the Quiet”
Gorillaz - “Humanz”
Laura Marling - “Semper Femina”
2017 Playlist:
Arcade Fire - “Everything Now”
Lindsey Buckingham and Christine McVie - “In My World”
Childish Gambino - “Redbone”
Father John Misty - “Ballad of the Dying Man”
Fleet Foxes - “If You Need To, Keep Time on Me”
HAIM - “Want You Back”
Hurray for the Riff Raff - “Rican Beach”
Jason Isbell - “Cumberland Gap”
Valerie June - “Astral Plane”
Diana Krall - “Sway”
Alison Krauss - “Gentle on My Mind”
Shelby Lynne and Alison Moorer - “I’m Looking for Blue Eyes”
Laura Marling - “Soothing”
Flo Morrisey and Matthew E. White - “Look What the Light Did”
Randy Newman - “Putin”
Offa Rex - “The Gardener”
Phoenix - “Ti Amo”
The Shins - “Mildenhall”
The Suburbs - “Hey Muse”
Tennis - “My Emotions are Blinding”
Chris Thile and Brad Mehdau - “That Old Shade Tree”
The xx - “I Dare You”
Disappointment:
* Feist - “Pleasure:” I really enjoyed Canadian singer-songwriter Leslie Feist’s work when she burst out of the Broken Social Circle collective to release her own solo album The Reminder a decade ago. However, her 2017 album “Pleasure” is a long way from the catchy pop of “1234” and “I’ve Seen It All.” She has described it as an attempt to explore “emotional limits,” yet, its somber soundscape never really drew me in.
I’d love to hear what you’ve been listening to this year.

Midweek Premiership Madness!

The Fredonia campus is shut down due to the extreme wintry conditions today, so I'm taking advantage of an afternoon at home to enjoy some Premiership footer. NBC Sports is showing the Man Citeh visit to Wales to meet Swansea. If they win today, they'll set a new record for a winning streak of 15 matches. Elsewhere, United are at home to Bournemouth, Liverpool are at home to West Brom and Arsenal are away to West Ham. Join me for a cuppa and a match if you're around.

RIP Cheggers

Many of you will have memories of waking up on Saturday mornings to the chirpy Keith Chegwin who has passed away recently after he lost his battle against a fatal lung disease. He was only 60! RIP Cheggers.

Premiership Plus Predictions Game - Week 16 Update

Hiya, chaps. Greetings from snowy Fred-town. I'm checking in with the usual PPP update on a Monday afternoon. Not a lot of changes this weekend. The top five seems locked in at this point, despite United losing and Liverpool and Arsenal dropping points. Swansea had a big win at the bottom, which moved them off the floor of the league but they're still in massive trouble. And the Championship playoff sides remain the same. Given the incredible dust-up at Old Trafford after yesterday's match, during which Jose Mourinho was doused in milk, there may be some FA charges coming. Romelu Lukaku, who threw a bottle, is the most likely (none of us picked him, btw). More of that to come later.

Here are the current (unchanged standings):

1. Gooner71 - 33 points
2. Swansong - 32 pts
3. What's Up Wheaton Simon - 30 pts
4. MOT the Hoople - 28 pts
5. Someone Said - 23 pts
6. Yellows - 22 pts
7. Man Utd Rules - 20 pts
-  Red Devil 1FCK - 20 pts
9. Blue Devil - 18 pts
-  Red Dragon - 18 pts
-  The Saint - 18 pts
12. United We Stand - 17 pts
13. West Ham Rising - 14 pts

A Snowy Derby Day Sunday

Good morning, gents - I'm up at the crack of dawn for a very Super Sunday in the Premiership. We start with Arsenal traveling to the South Coast, where it's been raining overnight. Then we've got two classic derby matches back to back, starting with Liverpool v. Everton from Anfield and then ending the day with the Manchester Derby from Old Trafford. Oh - did I mention it's been snowing in the UK? Right - be here sharpish for all the action.

Saturday Morning's Alright for Footie!

A very good Saturday morning to all of you. I'm settling in to watch some of the good stuff after a long and snowy week here in Western New York. We get started at the London Stadium with West Ham v. Chelski. Then we've got the usual 10am EST kickoffs, including Spurs v. Stoke. I'm also delighted that my beloved Leeds are scheduled to be ESPN3 for their away match with QPR. Join me for all the fun today, won't you?

Books of 2017

It’s that time of year again, time to take stock of the books that I’ve most enjoyed this year. This year, I continued to increase the number of audiobooks in my “reading” diet - I’ve found that dense, non-fiction books are fairly easily consumed in the office, in a similar manner to NPR podcasts. In that way, I’ve gotten through a dozen books, most ordered through Interlibrary Loan, that I might not have otherwise enjoyed. Here are the books that kept me listening or turning the pages in 2016:
1. Tom Perrotta - Mrs. Frederick: My favorite book of the year is Tom Perrotta’s Mrs. Frederick. It is a stunner, and it couldn’t be more vital in this social moment. For once the postmodernist literary structure, with multiple narratives and narrators, didn’t bother me that much, as all of the main characters were so compelling: Eve, the newly empty nester; Brendan, her sweet but frat bro-ish son who she’s just sent off to college; Amanda, Eve’s lesbian-curious co-worker; Margo, Eve’s transgender professor and so on. It all comes together beautifully in a shattering finale.
2. Sarah Bakewell - At the Existentialist Cafe: In this exhaustive history of existentialism, Bakewell expertly traces the multiple influences on this complicated philosophical tradition, from Martin Heidegger’s Nazi sympathies to Jean-Paul Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir’s anti-fascist activism during the occupation of France. Existentialism lives within Bakewell's pages.
3. Coleson Whitehead - The Underground Railroad: Whitehead’s groundbreaking antebellum era novel considers Cora, a young slave on a plantation in Georgia who joins a fellow slave, Caesar, in an escape that takes them along the Railroad to Charleston, SC. The novel’s main conceit is that the Underground Railroad is an actual railroad, with conductors and engineers and rails running for miles under the Southern landscape. A yarn like this deserves a film treatment.
4. Rob Sheffield - Dreaming the Beatles: The Rolling Stone magazine writer’s latest book makes compelling case for the enduring legacy of The Beatles. In Sheffield’s mind, the Fab Four have had distinct identities for fans even in the decades following their break-up in 1970. Almost fifty years after their demise, Sheffield argues, The Beatles remain as vital for music fans as they did when they were releasing genius albums such as “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.”
5. Dave Eggers - Heroes of the Frontier: Dave Eggers work frequently explores the different meanings of community, whether it is the family support of his memoir or the stiflingly intrusive social media community in Circle. In his latest, Eggers gives us Josie, a married dentist, who chucks in her practice and her marriage and yanks her two young kids to the wilds of Alaska. At first, it seems that Josie has it all figured out, but then their lives careen out of control and we begin to question Josie’s judgment (and sanity).
6. Ken Ilgunas - Trespassing Across America: Most travel books are only incidentally political. However, the politics of climate change are front and center in Ilgunas’ book. For the project, Ilgunas walked the entire route of the XL Pipeline from Alberta to the Gulf of Mexico, meeting up with the people whose lives will be most affected by the project.
7. Kristin Hannah - The Nightingale: In her debut novel, Kristin Hannah imagines two sisters, Vianne and Isabelle, one a conventional wife and mother, and the other a rebellious teenager. The two sisters have radically different responses to Nazi occupation of their hometown in provincial France and yet they somehow come back to the same place in the end.
8. Jane Mayer - Dark Money: Jane Mayer’s latest superbly sourced investigation traces the history of the movement to finance right-wing causes through front groups established by the likes of the Koch brothers. Like Nation on the Take, it shows how big money has perverted policy discussions related to a range of important issues.
9. Celeste Ng - Everything I Never Told You: This gem of a novel starts with a bang with the disappearance of the teenage daughter of James and Allison Lee’s daughter. There is nothing like a mystery to pull in the reader and Ng makes you keep turning the pages, as she spins out her story of a complex, biracial family living in a small college town.
10. E.J. Huntley - Tony Currie: The Matador: This brilliant biography of Tony Currie, my favorite Leeds player from my youth, was my constant companion in the early part of the year. Currie was part of a group of highly skilled maverick playmakers including Rodney Marsh, Alan Hudson and others who never really got their full due. The only minor problem with Huntley’s book was that front cover picture of Currie in a Sheffield United kit.
Notable Others:
W. Kamau Bell - The Awkward Thoughts of
Pagan Kennedy - Inventology
Chris Hayes - A Colony in a Nation
David Hepworth - Never a Dull Moment
Heather Beth Johnson - The American Dream and the Power of Wealth
Robert P. Jones - The End of White Christian America
Dean King - The Feud
William J. Mann - The Wars of the Roosevelts
Marc Myers - Anatomy of a Song
Potter and Penniman - Nation on the Take
Ben Ratliff - Every Song Ever
Linda Tirado - Hand to Mouth
Jeffrey Toobin - American Heiress

Disappointment:
* Ann Patchett - Commonwealth: I’ve always loved Ann Patchett’s work, and this one started out so promisingly, with Patchett’s usual lengthy description of one scene: a baby shower. But for some reason, after that first chapter, Patchett decided to jump whole generations with subsequent chapters. This unusual structural decision made it impossible to develop deep connections with her characters.

Premiership Plus Predictions Game - Week 15 Update

A very good Tuesday afternoon, chaps. I hope the week is treating you well. As usual, I'm checking in with an update of our game. There was a bit of a shuffle at the top of the Premiership, with Arsenal losing at the Emirates and Liverpool romping to victory again - they've swapped places once again. Similarly the bottom three have reshuffled. And Derby County have crept up into the playoff spots in the Championship.

Interestingly, that hasn't changed much in our table, with Gooner71 still riding high alongside the others who tipped Citeh for the title. Those of us who were foolish enough to tip Spurs for the top spot are in the relegation spots. Here are the current standings:

1. Gooner71 - 33 points
2. Swansong - 32 pts
3. What's Up Wheaton Simon - 30 pts
4. MOT the Hoople - 28 pts
5. Someone Said - 23 pts
-  Yellows - 23 pts
7. Man Utd Rules - 20 pts
-  Red Devil 1FCK - 20 pts
9. Blue Devil - 18 pts
-  Red Dragon - 18 pts
-  The Saint - 18 pts
12. United We Stand - 17 pts
13. West Ham Rising - 13 pts

A Rather Late Start to a Sunday

Morning, chaps! I decided to give the early match between Bournemouth and Southampton in favor of a lie in and some grading. I think I made the right call, as the Cherries and Saints played out what sounds like a drab 1-1 draw. But I'm settling in now with a full stomach to enjoy the Citeh v. West Ham. Citeh can equal a Premiership record of 13 wins on the trot with a win over the Hammers today. Join me for all the fun, won't you?

Saturday, December 02, 2017

I'm settling in after a tedious meeting to enjoy my beloved Leeds United taking on Aston Villa on the sacred turf at Elland Road. If you're so inclined, join me for all of the fun and games.

Russia 2018 Draw Live!

I'm hoping for a nice, easy group for the England boys emerges from this morning's World Cup 2018 draw. I'll take this one:

1. Poland
2. England
3. Iran
4. Panama.

The draw starts at 10am EST. I'll be stuck in a meeting but trying to take a sneaky peek at my device.
