Lakenheath Old Boys

We are all former students at Lakenheath High School and other public schools in East Anglia. We were in school in the 70s and 80s and drank deeply from the well of British culture of those decades - the pints, the telly, and of course the footie!

Blockbuster Sunday!

Who the bleedin' hell are Histon, anyway? I'll be up at the crack of dawn with a strong cup of coffee at my side and my lucky Leeds shirt on to find out. It all starts at 7:15 EST.

Oh, and that's followed by something called the Manchester derby and then Chelsea vs. Arsenal. You know - same old, same old.

So, what? I know you heathens won't be in church so join me for one of the most exciting mornings of the season so far.

FA CUP TRIVIA

To get into the mood of the FA Cup, I thought I would ask an FA Cup trivia question.

How many Cup Finals have pitted two teams against each other named United?
Name the teams and years.

Good Luck

FA Cup 2nd Round

Ah, the majesty of the Cup. The muddy pitches, the tiny stands, the dreams of Wembley Way. It's all still there. Today we enter the 2nd Round of the world's most vaunted knock-out competition.

Oh...and there are some rubbish Premiership matches on the docket as well.

I'm back in Blue Devil HQ and looking forward to the pleasure of your company this morning. Join me?

Can this man crush the Premier League?

This is Justin. You know him as JustinTV.

Davey found this piece in the Guardian that outs the issue of pirated streaming internet coverage of the Premier League and the hand wringing efforts of the League to clamp down on JustinTV, and some 90,000 sites devoted to streaming footy.

Are we really at risk of a melt-down because the Prem can't count on Sky's, Setanta's, and ITV's cash deals for coverage? Discuss.

Wenger: Fab is the new skipper

The latest directive out of the Emirates by commissar Wenger is that Spanish schemer Cesc Fabregas has been named the new captain at Arsenal. Add that to William Gallas having been stripped of the captaincy and forced to say "pardon" in order to stay at the club and you've got some fairly dramatic changes in North London.

Has Arsene lost the plot? Discuss....

Stars of the future

I meant to post this earlier, but forgot. Football writers were asked their opinion of who from the young players in the Prem they thought were promising. Something for all LOBbers here:

Another Big Day Upon Us

Join me for another big day for our favorite squads
I want my United to keep up their great run against Villa.
The Arse needs to get back on track against Citeh.
Cheski should have a home banker against Newcastle.
Costa should have the same at home to Fulham.
Last but not least, Leeds will want to make Jeff Stelling's day miserable with a home win against Hartlepool

Hope to have some company

U.S. vs. Guatemala Live!

Sam's Army did the hard work with a 0-1 win in Guatemala last August to kick off what has been a spotless qualifying campaign to date. Now they host Guatemala in Colorado knowing that they've already qualified for the final round of qualifying but can do some damage to Guatemala and help out the T&T boys.

Join me for some chat during the match if you're watching.

Germany vs. England Live!

Germany vs. England. That conjures up some images over the years. Even in the context of a "friendly," it's going to have plenty of atmosphere about it. Join me if you're able to this afternoon...

This is England

Okay, lads, I know I'm two years late with this, but if any of you haven't seen This is England, do yourself a favor and Netflix it soon. It's a moving work of cinema -- at times difficult to watch, and others, warm and inviting. The writer/director is a supporter of Notts County. Shouldn't Leeds be playing them soon, Gator-B?

Should Footie Fans Watch MLS?

Davey recently opened up an interesting thread via email that I thought I'd move here by asking the obvious question - "Why are the Red Bulls playing in the Western conference finals?"

Look, we know that a lot about MLS doesn't make sense to real footer fans. The question is - should they watch it regardless of the poor quality and asinine structure?

It's clear to me that the forming of MLS was a key turning point in bringing high quality football to our tellies. But is there still a connection or are the Premiership, Champions League, Serie A and so on big enough brands to sustain themselves here without MLS?

Bolton Christmas Tree V Liverpool and all the rest

Morning all, i got up for this classic. Bolton's 78 men behind the ball boring me to tears...and then Bolton out of nothing should have had a goal on the brink of half time but its Rob Styles reffing and he robbed them per Rob Styles refereeing manual and disallowed it.

That said I hope BOlton go down , they are shocking to watch and bereft of attacking intent.

Top Ten Irritating Phrases

The Telegraph has a list of the top 10 irritating phrases.

I can hear Jose Mourinho saying all of these.

What would you add to this list. I'd add, "to be honest." Urrgh.

Matt Taibbi's New Blog

I opened the lastest issue of Rolling Stone - AC/DC on the cover! - to find that Matt Taibbi, one of the sharpest political writers these days, has got a new blog.

To get all of Taibbi's pieces from the Stone, including his latest recounting his favorite moments from the 2008 campaign, as well as daily updates and more nonsense, go to:

rollingstone.com/taibbiunbound

Taibbi's shown that he's not afraid to skewer the Democrats when they need skewering, so he'll be a vital progressive voice in holding Barack's feet to the fire in the coming years.

Bloody Confused - Chapter 17

Here I was killing some time before my SuperShuttle to the Tampa airport this afternoon, when I came across this nugget:

"I missed that year, even though Pompey featured in 1986-7 the first American to play in the Premiership, John Kerr..."

I was temporarily distracted by the surname Kerr before I remembered that the Kerrs who played at LHS were Jeff and Brian. Then I thought, "wasn't Harkesy the first Yank to play in the Premiership?" Sure enough, a little research turned up that Kerr, who's now a coach at Duke, was born in Toronto, which as far I know, is still in Canada.

Can anyone help me out with this one - was Harkesy the first?
