Lakenheath Old Boys

We are all former students at Lakenheath High School and other public schools in East Anglia. We were in school in the 70s and 80s and drank deeply from the well of British culture of those decades - the pints, the telly, and of course the footie!

Fight! Fight! Fight!

OK, hands up anyone, ANYONE who predicted that Mancini would take on Moyes in a scuffle? It looked like an Afghan hound up against a Staffordshire terrier. The video that I saw first on Sky was pretty excellent, but I can't find a youtube that does it the justice this picture does.

Midweek Footie Madness!

It's another big, big day in the Premiership. I'm hoping for an hour or so when I can shut my office door and enjoy the Beautiful Game in peace for a bit. If you're able to find the time too, please join me.

Up the Hammers!

I'm over yesterday's funk over the Millwall defeat and back this afternoon looking forward to following today's fixtures. Gianfranco Zola's been in a funk recently too, but he and the Happy Hammers might get a tonic today in the form of three points against Mick McCarthy's Wolves side. Join me for that one and plenty of other action!

Leeds v. Millwall Live!

It's a true promotion six-pointer today between my beloved Whites and the despised Lions of Millwall. Should be a hot one and I'm of course hoping for the full three points at Elland Road, which will take us one step closer to automatic promotion.

RIP Alex Chilton (1950-2010)

I would be remiss if I didn't mention the death this week of power pop genius Alex Chilton at the age of 59. To be honest, Big Star were one of those bands that I always wanted to love more than I actually did, but there is no denying Chilton's influence on indie rock, including bands that I have loved such as REM and the Replacements. A tip of the hat, then, to Alex.

Good riddance

I've seldom been as proud to be an Arsenal supporter as I am today upon hearing that the final straw for this pest was Nick's last gasp winner on the weekend. And I'm really happy that he clung to the branch just long enough for us to knock him off.

If only they would have allowed Cesc to deliver the P45... in street clothes... by gobbing on his head. Sod-off Son of Sam!

Is It All Over??

David Beckham has torn his Achilles Tendon while playing for Milan this evening. He has been ruled out for five to eight months!
He will definitely be out of the World Cup squad. I know some of you think this is a good thing but is he done for good!
A spectacular career in my books. He was a United legend from 1996-2003. He won it all while he was wearing the famous red shirt. He went through torture that was not deserved after his sending off in WC '98 but he fought his way back to be a national hero with his goal against Greece. His career was never the same after he left United but still won the Spanish title in his last season. I don't think he should have ever come to the MLS.

Your thoughts?

Castrol Football Rankings

I'm usually not one for promoting corporate websites but a friend recently forwarded me this fascinating soccer ranking site sponsored by the Castrol oil company. As you'll see, they've ranked the world's top footballers starting with Barca's Lionel Messi as #1. Of course, footie fans can (and will) argue 'til the cows come home about this sort of thing. The most interesting aspect of the site is that you can use the pull-down menus in the middle of the page to see the rankings sorted by club side or international team. I did a quick search of the top rated sides for WC 2010 and found that Spain seemed to have the strongest squad (no surprise there) but that Brazil might be over-rated at #2 in most observer's estimations. Check out the site by cutting and pasting the following link:

Heeeeeeee's Back!

The Champions League tie between United and Milan was virtually settled by one Wayne Rooney last week, so the main narrative behind today's clash is the return of Goldenballs to his Old Trafford stomping grounds. Will the crowd boo him? Will Fergie give him a ceremonial boot in the face for old time's sake? Will see in a few moments. Join me for this afternoon's activities from 2:45 pm onward.

Champions League Live!

Plenty of great footer on today, highlighted by Arsenal trying to right the wrong of "that indirect free kick" back at the Emirates this evening. We've also got a couple of Premiership matches that effect the relegation battle and a full slate of Championship and League 1 matches including Leeds at Tranmere. Join me for the action!

The 82nd Academy Awards Live!

It's Oscar night in Hollywood and I'm happy to be hosting the LOB Oscar party. Awards shows usually frustrate me as they never choose to award the people and films that I would. But I'm a movie fan, so I always end up watching and waiting for those few magic pop cultural moments. If you're out there watching, drop in for a chat, eh? I'll look forward to the pleasure of your company.

FA Cup Quarterfinals Live!

It's FA Cup Quarterfinals weekend. There may be no action on the box but, no matter, we know where to find it, don't we? It all starts with Pompey v. Brum in a few moments followed by Fulham v. Spurs at noon. In between is the usual league action. Join me for the usual Saturday morning LOB banter, won't you?

Footie Trivia Question of the Week

We haven't had one of these recently but I came across a terrific bit of trivia on the Preview Show this weekend. Here it is:

"Who are the six footballers who have scored in the Premiership in each of the three decades - the Nineties, the Noughties and the Teenies - that the Premiership has been in operation?" (Bonus points if you can name the clubs that they played for during this time)

Good luck, chaps!
